Year 6 News Spring Term 1 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory This half term we are starting a Creative Study Unit on Roald Dahl’s classic “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Much of our learning will be centred on this exciting theme.

In Literacy we will watch the different versions of the book on film and make comparisons. We will write descriptive passages about settings and characters from the book.

We are going to read the novel and use the story to write stories of our own. We will also use the novel as a basis for writing persuasive and instructional texts.

In Numeracy, we will study fractions and weighing and measuring, linked to food. We

will also use the theme of sweets to study probability.

The children’s history skills will be developed by researching the history of chocolate, with a particular focus on the Aztecs and we will also use our geographical skills to identify areas in the world where chocolate comes from.

In ICT we will be using new paint packages to create visual images to represent the different aspects of the story. In Music, the children will create soundscapes linked to the film and learn some of the songs too!!

In Art, we will use the settings in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as our stimulus. The children will produce thumbnail sketches of different settings and then will work collaboratively to produce collages made from sweet wrappers– if you still have any wrappers lying around after Christmas these would be gratefully received!.

Finally, in PE we will be developing our dance skills. We will also be learning different ‘over the net’ games. Please ensure your child has suitable outdoor clothing. We will be doing some of our sessions outdoors.

As you can see we will be having a very busy half-term!

Our Skill for Learning this half term is ‘Independence.’ Children will be learning how to become more independent in their studies-a useful tool for secondary school transition!

Standards Week With the start of a new year, this half term we will be focusing as a whole school on raising and maintaining high standards at Monteney school. This will mean children and adults being vigilant on school uniform, behaviour, assembly, playtime, and lunchtime routines, and displaying high standards of work. You can help your child achieve these high standards by making sure your child has their blue bag every day, brings their correct P.E kit on the necessary days, and wears the correct uniform, including no nail varnish and only watches and stud earrings. We thank you for your continued support.

MARVELLOUS MATHS! As part of our Year of Maths, we will be inviting parents to attend a Maths lesson with their children.

In this lesson we will be focusing on one of the four number operations… more information will follow!
