Year 6 News Summer Term 2015 Last term was another huge success for Year 6. From the fabulous work shown at our most recent exhibition, including a tear-jerking dance routine, to a fascinating science week where we honed our skills as Crime Scene Investigators to attempt to solve the mystery of the missing house point tubes. As always, all the Y6 children worked their socks of and should be really proud of their achievements. We’re really looking forward to our final term!

Inventors and Inventions

FOLLOW US… @Y6Monteney @mrf15her @m1sswildman

To celebrate the 90th Anniversary of John Logie Baird’s invention of the TV, we will be spending this term investigating some of the most important inventions in history and the men and women responsible for their creation. We will look at some weird, wacky and perhaps less successful inventions which you’ll find hard to believe really exist! Later in the term, we will investigate the work of mechanical engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and how his work revolutionised transport and modern engineering. As part of this work, we will study the strengths and properties of materials, shapes and joins; using these to design, build and test bridges which will compete against each other at our exhibition of learning at the end of term.

PE

Reading

During the first half of this term we’ll be having a go at Tai Chi and building our fitness with Circuit Training and in the 2nd half term we’ll try our hand at rounders and athletics. PE Kits should be in school every day and must contain:  Plain white t-shirt  Plain black/blue shorts  Black pumps If you wish, you can also have trainers and a pair of plain tracksuit bottoms for PE outside (you are not able to wear the ones you come to school in). We recommend that all items and the bag are clearly marked with your name. PE days: 6EW – Tuesday and Thursday 6JF – Wednesday and Friday

Later this term, we will be reading Norman Hunter’s Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm. This tale of the ups and downs faced by a nutty inventor will support our topic learning. We love this book and hope you will too. Some of you may have seen the Professor brought to life by the very funny Harry Hill in the BBC Drama. If not, have a watch of this clip: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02flwg6

Project Homework This term, we are asking all children to complete a project at home under the theme: INVENTIONS. You could:  Research a famous invention.  Design and build your own invention to solve an everyday problem.  Find out about a famous inventor.  Find a wacky invention then test and review it.  Anything else you like! The projects can be presented in any way you choose. They can be emailed to misswildman@monteneyelearning.org or mrfisher@monteneyelearning.org or brought into school. Projects due no later than Monday 29th June
