JAMES GEIDEL // PRESIDENT OF RGMMC
As we approach the first round of the newly rebranded FIA Karting European Championship with many plans in motion, it`s guaranteed to be a time of change. Since the confirmation that RGMMC obtained the promotional rights of the CIK-FIA Karting European and World Championships, CIK together with RGMMC have been working around the clock towards accomplishing the vision of the championships while creating a strong bond between the two entities and everyone involved. The highest priority for both CIK-FIA and RGMMC is a well organised event with a fair judgment system. RGMMC presented a planned out strategy to better commercialize the sport of karting, create a stronger fan base and bring new revenues to the championships, which in turn will benefit the teams and drivers. Over the next three years, RGMMC together with the CIK and FIA plan to remould the sport and bring it into modern times using all the tools available. The hardest part for a sporting agency is to obtain a new property, firstly as the entire platform must be created and secondly we have very little content to use in the sense of marketing. Our primary objective is to deliver all those in the sport a well organised event.
Karting is a passion of many including my own. Karting has been my life since I was six, my passion was always in the engineering and business of sport. Over the past 12 years, I have spent the most of my life on karting, single seater and car race events as a race engineer in GT’s and single seaters, developing safety products and on the marketing side. However, its karting which pulls at my heart – the sport deserves to be marketed correctly to a broader audience.
I thank all the competitors and teams for their support and the CIK-FIA for the opportunity to promote and create the FIA Karting European Championship. Last but not least I would like to express my deepest thanks to Mr Sorrentino from International Karting Circuit of Napoli for his kind hospitality and helpful staff.

KART MAGAZINE 2018 // INTRODUCTION
WELCOME TO THE FIRST ROUND OF THE CIK-FIA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP ... here in the shadow of the famous mount Vesuvius. It was a long winter with lots of work going on behind the scene but finally the Championship season kicks off this weekend and thanks for that! But it is not only the racing, although most important, there is much more at stake. Those lucky enough to be in attendance will hopefully witness the start of a new episode with Filippe Massa taking control of the CIKFIA as new President and RGMMC as the new Promoter of the Karting European and World Championship. Both of them will surely put their mark on the future of our sport. What that future will be? Que sera, sera as they sing. However one very important and stable factor remains the same. We are back at the magnificent facilities of the Circuito Internazionale Napoli in Sarno, a tradition that goes back to the previous century. No doubt that owner Giuseppe Sorrentino and his dedicated staff will do once again their upmost best to make the first round of the OK and OK-J European Championship an unforgettable event. What can we expect this weekend? No matter if we are talking qualifying, the heats or the final, one should be able to feel the tension and watch very
close and spectacular racing, between many extremely competitive drivers. It is therefore impossible to name a clear favourite. Not only is there a question mark about who will be the driver to beat in 2018 but we will also see quite a few new homologated chassis and even some from new manufacturers to take on the establishment. With well over one hundred-fifty drivers entered, the popularity of the OK engine concept introduced two years ago has fulfilled the objective former President Sheik Abdulla and myself had set when we took control of the CIK to bring back the glory days of karting. Last but definitely not least I like to wish our new Promoter RGMMC headed by the ambitious James and Roland Geidel all the best in taking karting to the next level. I have already seen some virtual plans and if they work out the same in reality then I am confident that a new episode in the history of karting will be written. Ladies and gentlemen start your engines.

KART MAGAZINE 2018 // INTRODUCTION
A WARM WELCOME IN SARNO TO EVERYBODY FOR THIS KART GRAND PRIX ITALY A warm welcome in Sarno to everybody for this Kart Grand Prix Italy. To receive the honor to host in my track the first round of the CIK-FIA European Championship is really nice. And we are counting on the fans`, teams`, drivers` competitive feeling to celebrate this world class event in the manner it deserves. Because even if the race is a part of a continental championship, the series has a global impact on karting and on motorsport itself. To manage and host a FIA race represents a great capital for us in terms of business and in terms of sports with its contribution to support the place where I live and the complexthat I manage. Important news for this season is, as everybody knows, that we have a new promoter for CIK-FIA’s series. From my side the impact and approach with Mr James Geidel from RGMMC has been the best and I am sure that the group understands what Sarno represents for karting and what Circuito is able to guarantee to karting in the future. On the other hand, a big thank you for the work done by WSK in the past five years to make the CIK-FIA Championships what they are today.
So, me, the FIA and RGMMC are ready to engage new challenges for this sport and the feeling is that I am working in a team, in synergy. Thanks to this opportunity that provides me with the chance to see and think of significant improvements on track and on the entire track which are and will be so important to the success of the present event and for the other ones in Sarno, labelled CIK-FIA/RGMMC. Now, all is set. On behalf of our Circuito’s Board, I would like to congratulate everyone involved in organizing this race. Mr Van de Grint from FIA, Mr Geidel from RGMMC, my ASN and the whole staff in charge and guys and girls of my organization. As always, it is our aim to continue to set the highest standards at the track. In the show of karting, the race is made behind the scenes. To the drivers and the teams who stand on the stage: welcome in Sarno! They know and must know their effort to compete in a race in Sarno gains the maximum respect from us. I would shat the hands of all the guys on the track... may the best man win!

RACE PREVIEW ITALY GREAT START OF THE 2018 CIK-FIA SEASON AT SARNO The Italian Kart Grand Prix will launch the FIA Karting European Championship, for the OK and OK-Junior categories from April 20th to 22nd at the Sarno circuit and will be a longawaited rendezvous for RGMMC’s debut as CIK-FIA Competitions’ Promoter. The event is already looking promising with an entry higher than last year and constant confrontation is expected between the established stars and young hopefuls of the discipline. The FIA and RGMMC wanted to make an impression by introducing new denominations for the CIK-FIA Championships for the general public and the media. Highly expressive and easy to memorise, the names „FIA Karting European Championship“ and „Kart Grand Prix“ will be used to promote an overall increase in audience. In addition to these first visible changes, the Sarno event will reveal the other updates to the 2018 season programme. This year, the CIK-FIA European Championships for the OK and OK-Junior categories are organised over four events from April to August, in Italy, Great Britain, Germany and France. The first meeting shows the popularity of the series already with 85 entered in OK and 82 in OK-Junior, growth of more than 15% compared to 2017. 36 nationalities will be represented, with strong Italian participation, 27 drivers, ahead of Great Britain and Spain, with 16 drivers each, then France and Finland, 13 drivers each, and Germany and Russia, 10 drivers each.
10
In OK, the most experienced champions such as Pedro Hiltbrand (ESP), Tom Joyner (GBR), Danny Keirle (GBR), already holders of world titles, plus Nicklas Nielsen (DNK), Lorenzo Travisanutto (ITA), Noah Milell (SWE) and David Vidales Ajenjo (ESP) are in danger of having to battle the younger generation of Dexter Patterson (GBR), the reigning Junior World Champion, Jonny Edgar (GBR), the previous Junior European Champion, as well as Callum Bradshaw (GBR), Harry Thompson (GBR), Hugo Sasse (DEU) and Zane Maloney (BRB) among a large number of other talents to be discovered. The OK-Junior category, open to drivers aged 12 to 14, is filled with more talented hopefuls than ever before. Those with at least one year of experience have some advantage over newcomers. This is the case for Gabriel Bortoleto (BRA), Zak O’Sullivan (GBR), Dino Beganovic (SWE), Kirill Smal (RUS), Hadrien David (FRA) and Paul Aron (EST). However, we can count on a few rookies to disrupt the established stars, with drivers like Gabriele Mini (ITA), Taylor Barnard (GBR), Dilano Van’t Hoff (NLD), Jak Crawford (USA) and Thomas Nepveu (CAN). Note that two former Formula 1 drivers, Jarno Trulli and Juan Pablo Montoya, have chosen this category to train their sons, Enzo and Sebastian respectively.

KART MAGAZINE 2018 // OMP RACE SUITS
HOW IS A KARTING SUIT MADE? WHAT’S THE PROCESS BEHIND THE OVERALL THAT EVERY DRIVER MUST WEAR? To learn something about that, let’s take a trip through the headquarters of OMP Racing in Genoa, northern Italy. For a number of seasons, OMP kartwear has been increasing its presence in the karting competitions world. The life of a karting overall begins with the fabric. The choice of the fabric the suits will be made of is the result of years of research and development, in a constant quest for lightness and comfort mixed with a high resistance to abrasion. This is the key for a good karting suit: while racing suits must be fire resistant, karting overalls have to resist heavy frictions with the ground, to avoid abrasion on the driver. In order to do this, low budget suits have many layers of fabric, while top shelf products have only two layers: the inner one, soft and comfortable, and the outer one: special material combining lightness, flexibility and resistance. Each time a lot of fabric arrives to the company’s warehouse, a random portion of the lot is taken apart and submitted to specific tests in order to check their actual resistance and compliance to FIA regulations. In one of them, the portion is fixed to a pad, and a machine arm rubs sandpaper on it for a given time: if the fabric remains unworn, the lot passes the test.
12
After this, the fabric gets printed. On the roll, just like on a giant sheet of paper, the machine prints the various parts of the suit (leg, arm, shoulder‌), laid down as they were previously designed by OMP art department. People working in such a department develop the design of the suits starting from the ideas and the stubs submitted by customers. The parts are now cut by a special machine, then gathered together in a bundle. Finally, the material is delivered to the tailoring department, where the bundle is untied and the parts are machine-sewed by expert hands. The very last step is the quality check: every square inch of the suit is carefully looked at to secure there is no pilling or other imperfections.

KART MAGAZINE 2018 // INTERVIEW DINO CHIESA
INTERVIEW WITH DINO CHIESA OWNER OF KART REPUPLIC You started Kart Republic at the end of last year. What is the story behind it? Kart Republic was an idea I conceived around March/April last year, while still working with Zanardi. After 12 years, at the end of 2017 the homologations for the Zanardi kart had to be renewed, at which point everyone would have to buy a new chassis for the new year, so it seemed like the perfect moment if I wanted to make a move. Kart Republic is a very strong name, and also in a very different line of all other manufacturers. What’s the idea and the meaning behind it? The word Republic demonstrates strength. The meaning of it by definition is the power that comes from the people behind it, rather than a monarch. Historically it signifies a certain equality between its members. In that sense I wanted a brand where the chassis’ owners and drivers are not just customers, but instead they can really feel they are part of the big picture. The name is just the first step but it’s also the bigger idea behind the brand. Also, at the back of my mind there was always the Serenìsima Repùblica Vèneta, where my roots are from. The Winged Lion of Venice was my inspiration behind the wings of the Kart Republic, and similarly the color pattern followed that of the flag. I have a special feeling about the region and its heritage which really means a lot to me, to remember where I come from.
14
Why make a new brand and not continue with Zanardi, a successful brand you started from the beginning? Zanardi was never really my brand. The name of course belongs to Alex Zanardi, while all the material was from CRG. I wanted to start an independent brand, with which we could make a strong point and innovate. This could have never happened with Zanardi, as it was perceived by everyone as a byproduct of CRG, so anyone who wanted the winning product would go to the source – CRG – rather than buy Zanardi. A sub-brand is never allowed to overtake the main brand.
the homologations. A chassis starts from the computer with CAD software to make the design of the frames. From there we analyse the elements – a method commonly used in karting but also anywhere else in aviation and automotive – to simulate the flexing of the metallic tubes under different types of stress.
Lately karting sales have been monopolized by the very big factories, and most notably OTK. With Zanardi we took the fight to OTK on the track and won several championships against them, but as a brand we weren’t able to compete in sales as we weren’t a factory of our own.
How did you manage to produce something that was immediately successful? We were working on it months before the official presentation. It took six months of development and we weren’t satisfied until we reached a point where we had something equal or better than the one we were leaving behind.
I wanted something better. I wanted to give something back to karting, a different flavor of chassis, a different choice. I felt that to succeed in that it was necessary to stop cold, and start from scratch. As Kart Republic we are now a manufacturer of our own, we have full control and we are free to innovate and choose the direction of the product. Can you give us an insight in the process of manufacturing a chassis? It’s for sure a long process and requires that all the links in the production chain are working well. We started working with our chassis as early as April 2017, as we needed to make the first designs and develop the prototypes in at least six months to be ready in time for
Based on the analysis we choose the tubes, laser cut them, electronically bend them and lastly robotic welding. These days’ technology is very advanced and it’s very important we take advantage of it as much as possible.
With our official launch we presented three types, which we’re using this year: KR1 and KR2 which are evolutions of the ideas we were using with Zanardi (KR1 for shifters and KR2 for direct drive), and KR3 which was a completely new idea, something I would like to call the diamond of my work. It’s not that I feel any less for KR1 and KR2 but these ideas have reached the peak of their evolution. KR3 is a completely new concept, which I believe nobody else is using at the moment, and it has a lot of space for development.
KART MAGAZINE 2018 // INTERVIEW DINO CHIESA
Moving away from the chassis, and on to the driver. You have worked with great talents like Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Nyck de Vries. How do you find drivers and what makes them come to you? Everybody has a different story: Back in the days of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton it was more the word of mouth. A friend of Keke Rosberg, working with AMG was a sponsor of the CRG team and at the time suggested that Nico would come to CRG with me. Similarly, Ron Dennis asked Keke to bring Lewis Hamilton to karting and he joined alongside Nico. Nyck de Vries was another story as I saw him racing in Mariembourg with Maranello in mini at the time, and I really felt he had the talent, so I asked him to join.
Finally, the character of the driver is very important. You can teach the driver how to be fast and do mental coaching, but some characteristics of the personality on track change.
These days however such contacts happen mostly via email communications from drivers seeing the success of the team and inquiring 2–3 good teams at the same time for an offer before making their choice.
It’s a big circle. Once we see the number of entries growing, and especially if these are healthy entries able to support themselves financially in racing, it brings revenue to all the factors of the sport – factories, teams, suppliers, organization. This money then gets reinvested, which improves the sport and brings more drivers.
What are the important aspects of a complete driver? Honestly, the most important in a driver is the hunger. A driver who’s hungry to learn, to improve, to win, will be a complete and successful driver. This is what you saw in Lewis and Nico for example. I feel karting is a good school for a complete driver but also a complete person, as the ones who learn to work as much inside the kart as outside, will be the ones to succeed. In terms of racing, you see how a good driver is not only fast, but how he manages his race, how consistent he is and how much he can limit the mistakes.
What do you think about the state of karting at the moment? I’m very positive. Since the introduction of the OK/OKJ engines and the latest set of regulations, the entries are growing fast, but I also feel the economic climate is getting better, as we see a similar growth in national level. The same growth is reflected in the numbers I see in sales. For sure some countries are still struggling but I think it’s just a matter of time until they come out of the crisis as well.
I feel at this moment we have moved past the difficult time and we’re on a very positive path. It’s up to all of us to keep improving. If you would improve something in karting, what would it be? I would like to see karting to regain its character by eliminating rules that are relevant to cars. Karting is not just a stepping stone for
cars, it’s a sport of its own, and it can be very complete by itself. Historically it’s been a contact sport, with close racing but strict ruling. However, it looks like in recent years that it’s being used as another part of the chain of motorsports on the way to cars or formula, and several rules that are made for cars are brought in. These rules don’t work for karting and only numb down the sport, encouraging drivers to move away from karting sooner than they should. Marshals also are hesitant to use the flags and just let the races go ahead depending on technology and artificial rules to decide the results later. I would like to see karting rules to go back to being relevant to karting, and marshalling to get tougher. Apart from that, I would like to see steps to improve the image of karting for new people, and demonstrate that it’s a professional form of motorsport not just little cars.

KART MAGAZINE 2018 // WORDS FROM NIGEL EDWARDS
WORDS FROM CIK-FIA RACE DIRECTOR NIGEL EDWARDS CIK-FIA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018 How time flies – its hard to believe it has been a year since we were at the famous Sarno circuit, a real ‘hot bed’ of karting in Italy. The changes made in 2017 to the circuit in my view have really improved the layout and now provide a fast and demanding experience for our drivers. 2018 should provide some great grids of competitors especially in OKJ where I am expecting lots of interest from so many regions around the globe. There will of course be plenty of Italian youngsters at their local event waiting to show the world what they can do. The lower age for entering this class has also given the opportunity for the many ‘mini’ class drivers to move up into this ‘blue ribbon’ event and as we know these youngsters only know one thing – race, race, race! The OK Senior class will be very interesting for me as several of the ‘star’ Junior drivers of last year move into this class, this will be a real challenge for them as they mix it with the ‘big boys’. Race craft and shear physical ability will all be tested to the limit – wow let’s see what unfolds. However, one of the key changes for this season for myself and the CIK is the new association with RGMMC as the Championship promoters. Taking over from the WSK organisation who did a very professional job will be a tough task, but having worked with Roland & James Geidel before and knowing their passion and enthusiasm for karting, I’m sure they will soon get into their stride and provide the CIK events and Karting in general a real promotional and marketing platform to work from. One thing for sure is the RGMMC team will bring a ‘user friendly’ approach to proceedings which can only be good for all of us involved, and that will mean we can all go home with a smile on our face – bring it on! See you in Sarno.

For the readers who don’t know you, give us a brief description of yourself. – Born on Friday 13th February 2004 into a family who have been motor dealers for 99 years and involved in karting since 1963, it was inevitable that I would follow in their footsteps! I first went in a kart at the age of 3 at our local track, Rowrah, and that is where the journey began, one that led to winning the OKJ European Championships last year at the age of just 13.
2
How is your time divided between racing and outside life? – A typical week is spent with Monday & Tuesday at school, Wednesday travelling to the track then Thursday to Sunday at the race meeting.

3
What are the key elements in your opinion, apart from driving fast, for a driver to succeed? What makes a complete driver? – I believe that to be successful as a driver you need to be consistent in your results, extremely dedicated, level-headed and prepared to work hard at your physical/ mental fitness off the track to make you a better racer on track.
4
What is your race preparation, from fitness to testing? – Our team schedule means we test at each circuit before WSK/European events, allowing us to be as prepared as we can be for these events. Off track, my preparations include several fitness sessions per week.
5
Since you started racing in the FIA European and World Championship, how much more did you take notice of your diet and training? – Competing at European and World level means that everything has to be stepped up to be able to compete with such experienced and talented drivers. This includes both diet and fitness, which are important in improving overall fitness, stamina, sharpness and concentration.
6
Since the beginning of the year, you have become a part of Red Bull’s Junior Driver program. How much does it affect your career? – Being signed up to the Red Bull Junior Team is such a privilege, to which I am fully committed and extremely grateful for. I will make the transition to F4 in 2019 and beyond that hopefully progress through the various formulas.
KART MAGAZINE 2018 // DRIVER INTERVIEWS

A good/complete driver needs to take home the result, whatever the conditions and the speed are, so even when everything isn’t perfect you still manage to be fighting for the top positions.
“
LORENZO TRAVISANUTTO KR MOTORSPORT SRL
1
For the readers who don’t know you, give us a brief description of yourself. – I’m an 18 year old engineering student who has been driving with Dino Chiesa in the Zanardi team, and now moved with him to the new Kart Republic team. In 2016 I won the WSK Super Master Series, and in 2017 I scored 4 wins and 13 podiums overall, finishing also 3rd place in the CIKFIA European Championship.
2
You have been a consistent front-runner in the last few years. Apart from speed, what other elements do you think are key to good results? – The main factor of course is speed, but to be consistently on the top of every race, you need to be very calm and self-confident, and learn your own method of racing which will allow you to achieve the best results.
3
What are the aspects, in your opinion, define a good/complete driver? How are you focusing on yourself to get there? – A good/complete driver needs to take home the result, whatever the conditions and the speed are, so even when everything isn’t perfect you still manage to be fighting for the top positions.
4
It’s been a while since you raced on national level. How different do you think are the requirements of where you race internationally, from the national level? – In my opinion the main difference is the number of races per year. There’s not much difference when you’re racing national or international level regarding costs of material per race. People believe you need massive structures to compete in international karting, but I did it myself
with my father for many years and we still achieved great results overall. In my experience the biggest difference in cost of course is when we travel far to foreign countries, which requires extra days.
5
If you could improve karting in one way, what would that be? – I guess the first thing I would change in this beautiful sport is the importance it’s receiving from the rest of the world of motorsport. The level in karting is very high and the top runners would perform great in any category of motorsport, yet it isn’t considered as such and it’s hard for a karting driver to get the opportunity to drive in single seaters or GT cars. However, when you see drivers who run both, you see great results, with such examples being Nicklas Nielsen, and Ben Hanley.
