KART MAGAZINE 2018 // EDITORIAL
WELCOME TO THE SECOND EVENT OF THE CIK-FIA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS As we approach the first round of the CIKFIA gearbox classes and the Academy trophy I am filled with excitement. Not only for the spectacular enjoyment of watching the KZ and KZ2 classes and the wonderful concept of the Academy trophy, I am delighted to be able to be part of the return of CIK-FIA races to the legendary circuit of Salbris, which has not had an event of this importance for over a decade. Over the last 10 years I have been involved in multiple events at Salbris and the track layout has always provided us with great races.
As RGMMC continues to work closely with the CIK-FIA, our bonds become stronger and we are becoming a better oiled machine. With the constant development of promoting the kart sport and in particular the CIK-FIA events, we continue to strive and push our primary goals and targets. I would like to thank all the teams, parents and drivers who truly are the heart of the event.
Over the winter break, Salbris has overgone a massive amount of construction and improvements to enable to host this CIK-FIA event. From the demolishing of structures to the renovation of buildings, their hard work and dedication shows immensely. We are greatful of all the hard work Marc and his family have done.

KART MAGAZINE 2018 // THE #3500LIVES CAMPAIGN
THE #3500LIVES CAMPAIGN Each year 1.25 million lives are lost due to road traffic fatalities. This directly translates to 3.500 people killed every day, 500 of which are children, as well as an alarming number of 15–29 year olds, who are the most severely affected by road traffic fatalities. This health crisis also disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries: while only 54% of registered automobiles are in these nations, 90% of road traffic fatalities occur within them. To tackle such a global challenge, it is necessary to facilitate and raise awareness among all stakeholders, and encourage every road user to adopt simple, easily applicable, and effective rules for safer roads. To accomplish this, the FIA has partnered with JCDecaux, the #1 worldwide outdoor advertising company, on the global #3500LIVES road safety campaign, making this a unique global initiative on road safety.
EVERY DAY,
3.500 LIVES
ARE LOST IN ROAD TRAFFIC CRASHES
The campaign is being supported by 14 world renowned ambassadors from the worlds of art (Michael Fassbender, Michelle Yeoh and Pharrell Williams), motor racing (Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, Marc Marquez, and Felipe Massa), sport (Rafael Nadal, Yohan Blake, Wayde van Niekerk, Vanessa Low and Haile Gebrselassie), and politics (Anne Hidalgo). Through its signature “Sign Up, Stay Safe, Safe Lives”, the campaign highlights the role each and every person can play in making roads safe for all users. All of these ambassadors decided to defend this cause personally and voluntarily, and their messages may be viewed on the #3500LIVES section of the FIA website.
8
The #3500LIVES campaign in Belgium
These messages have also been endorsed by international organisations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC). On 20 February 2017, the FIA and IOC signed a formal agreement to support and promote the campaign messages across their shared platforms and ahead of sporting events. By the end of 2017, the campaign had been translated into more than 30 languages and been on display in over 900 cities across more than 75 countries, making it the world’s largest campaign dedicated to road safety. The campaign had used over 50.000 panels to show its messages worth a total media value of near ₏10 million.

RACE PREVIEW FRANCE The second Competition in the 2018 season includes the opening of the CIK-FIA European KZ and KZ2 Championships, as well as the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy. This important event will take place in France, on the international circuit of Salbris from 4th to 6th May with 150 Drivers entered. The setting in the past of major international Competitions, on this occasion the track of Salbris will resume the thread of its long history of high level Karting.
Pex (NLD), Simo Puhakka (FIN), Anthony Abbasse (FRA), Fabian Federer (ITA), Jimmy Iglesias (FRA) and Rick Dreezen (BEL). 78 Drivers have signed up for the first Competition of the CIK-FIA European Championship in KZ2, a number significantly higher than in 2017. In the absence of the outgoing Champion, the best contenders of last year are trying again their luck. This is the case for Paolo Ippolito (ITA), Matteo Vigano (ITA), Tom Leuillet (FRA), Rokas Baciuska (LTU), Adrien Renaudin (FRA) and Max Tubben (NLD), who were in the top 10 in 2017. Other Drivers will fight for the European title, including Francesco Iacovacci (ITA), Riccardo Longhi (ITA), Emil Skaras (SWE), Alessio Piccini (ITA), Benjamin Tornqvist Persson (SWE), Daniel Stell (DEU), Alexander Schmitz (DEU) ... Marta Garcia Lopez (ESP), David Vidales Ajenjo (ESP), Giuseppe Fusco (ITA) and Killian Meyer Prat (ESP) are among the newcomers to the gearbox category, which should bring many surprises.
KZ, KZ2 AND ACADEMY ENTER THE SCENE AT SALBRIS
This season, the CIK-FIA European KZ and KZ2 Championships will feature two rounds in which all points will be counted. The importance of the issue will be reinforced during each event. In parallel, the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy retains its usual pattern of three Competitions. Forty nations from five continents will be represented, with Italy having a clear numerical advantage with 47 Drivers, ahead of France (26) and the Netherlands (10).
KZ is the leading category of karting with a gearbox and brings together the best Drivers, often with a prestigious track record. This is of course the case of the four World Champions entered at Salbris: Paolo De Conto (ITA), the current major specialist in the discipline, as well as Marco Ardigo (ITA) who has just made a remarkable comeback in competition, and Jorrit Pex (NLD) and Pedro Hiltbrand (ESP). Their opponents are not short of achievements and the fight for the European title promises to be fierce among the big teams that will line up at the start. Patrik Hajek (CZE), Marijn Kremers (NLD), Alex Irlando (ITA), Stan

The 9th edition of the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy remains faithful to the formula that has ensured its success in the discovery and training of young talents from around the world. 51 drivers from 40 countries will compete on equal terms on a one-design Exprit / Vortex / LeCont kart. This Competition is supported by OTK Kart Group for chassis and engines and OMP for clothing. This year the list includes three female drivers and nine repeaters.

KART MAGAZINE 2018 // ABOUT PANTA FUEL
SABINO PANARELLA ABOUT PANTA FUEL Sabino, a few words about the company? – The company has been around since 1986, producing high performance fuel for racing purposes. We have collaborated with many top-level organizations like the FIA World Rally Championship, FIA Formula 3, Formula 4 series, FIA WTCC and of course since 2001 the FIA European and World Karting Championship. How is the Panta fuel better for karting? – Primarily because of the high octane level which is 102 octanes. It produces much better performance for racing and also because the high quality of raw materials used our final fuel is producing a much cleaner combustion in the engine and reducing the failure rate. How is it different than the gas station fuel? – The fuel from the gas station is primarily targeted at road consumption, not for racing purposes. The highest octane mix you can find in the market is usually 98 octanes with some special stations offering 100 octane fuel, but of course this doesn’t offer the same performance. Also, the most important in high-level competition is that gas stations’ fuel can always vary in consistency while competition fuel is always the same. How do you ensure that? – It starts from the factory where we continuously mix the fuel tanks before we fill it in the 25 liter containers. Then we make sure that all our high quality containers are perfectly clean, so we avoid any corrosion
12
of the fuel. At the end of the day and before it leaves the factory, we systematically take different fuel containers for analysis. Also every year the factory tanks go through yearly inspections. How many liters of fuel do you supply per race? – About 350 containers of 25L per race! Do you control the fuel that has been used by the competitors? – Of course we do, we take samples of the fuel they used in all the race heat and finals, and we control for density against the specific weight and various other tests with the digatron DT-64. Also we check the special chemical additives of the fuel sample to match the fuel we deliver to be sure the fuels do not contain additives.

KART MAGAZINE 2018 // ANSWERS FROM PABLO DE CONTO
ANSWERS FROM THE ULTIMATE CHAMPION PABLO DE CONTO What does it mean to you to be a professional driver? – Being a professional driver means making the most of every competition and aiming to always win and improve yourself. What’s your 2018 targets? – In 2017 I won all the possible titles including European and World Championships, which is a target I plan to repeat again in 2018 even though it will be even harder than the previous years. I love the challenges and I’m ready to get back into the game after a winter of preparations. Apart from being a racing driver what other passions in the sport do you have? – A passion of mine apart from the driving is teaching young drivers who are starting in the sport, analyzing even the smallest detail how to improve in every aspect to take even a tenth of a second off their lap time, which ultimately makes the difference to win and become champion one day. If you could improve the sport, how would you? – To improve this sport all costs have to be reduced. In my opinion also the implementation of a softer, more performing tire which makes it more beautiful and exciting to push yourself beyond limits would change the feeling for the drivers and make it more enjoyable.

– I started my career in 1999 in mini class and went through all the classes until I arrived in the shifter class back in 2007. In 2010 I became a professional karting driver in the tony kart racing team. My biggest achievement was back in 2014 when I won the European Championship and finished 3rd at the World Championship. Furthermore, I have been a couple of times 2nd in the European Championship.
– I’ve had the luck to work with some great teams and some of the best people in karting. The biggest differences I’ve experienced were that sometimes development and quality of the material were important whereas with others we fully focused on winning races. Another role I’ve had was to travel around the world to promote the product and do races outside Europe.
– Besides my racing activities, I’ve started a small business where I’m coaching and managing young drivers. It’s a nice work to do as I can share my own experiences with them and the joy they have when they succeed.
You have been for years in karting, give us a description of your karting career.

– Because of the work I do as driver coach, I’ve had to select some races as I can’t do a full program. Of course, it’s not the best preparation and it’s not easy to stay physically in shape but on the other hand, the hunger to drive is so much bigger when I see my competitors driving while I’m at the sideline.
– To be with an independent team reduces a bit of the stress as you have to compete against the factories which makes you always a bit of the underdog. The support from the factory is there but the latest developments come always a bit later by us, so I’m not always competing with the same weapons as others.
– For almost 20 years I’ve been in karting now and I think through the years karting has become too expensive. But it’s an evolution you can see in many other motorsports as well. Sadly, I don’t have a solution in mind for that but somehow I think the people must brainstorm to make karting simpler again – but it won’t be an easy task.
How does working as a coach and being a driver balance?
How does it compare from being in a factory team to being an independent team?
What would you do to improve karting?
