What To Do With Harry Thaw: The Millionaire Murderer In NH by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

At midnight of Saturday, January 10, 1914, a special commission in New Hampshire, appointed by Judge Edgar Aldrich filed a report with the clerk of the United States District Court concerning the mental state of one Harry Kendall Thaw. The commission was made up of General Frank Streeter and Charles Bancroft of Concord, NH, Dr. Morton Prince

of Boston, and Dr. Alden Blumer of Providence. The life of Harry Thaw was not one that highlighted the best of humanity and was so involved with strange happenings that we can only mention it here and show how his brief stay in New Hampshire was significant. Harry Kendall Thaw was born on February 12, 1871 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was the son and heir of a multimillionaire (maybe billionaire) coal and railroad See THAW on 22

Thaw shot and killed architect Stanford White in Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1906 in what was then considered “The Crime Of The Century.” NH History writer Robert Hanaford Smith tell the story of how Thaw ended up in the Granite State eight years after the murders.

The Educational Theatre Collaborative (ETC) is back with a spirited production of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel in six performances at The Flying Monkey in Plymouth beginning on Saturday, January 15. Premiered in 1945, Carousel has played a pivotal role in the development of musical theater. The story of Carousel comes from a 1909 Hungarian play, transplanted to a Down East fishing village in late 19th-century America. It tells of a carnival barker,

Everything Will Be Free To The Editor: It’s the beginning of a new year so I feel compelled to express a few of my views. Democratic Congresswoman AOC from New York has determined that we only have twelve years left before the earth draws to a close. What upsets me is that she continues to dictate to average Americans wherever they live that we should change the way we live by growing our own food. This would not work very well in New York. I spend a great deal of my time in Sarasota Florida where thousands of Amish live. They do grow their own food and I can assure they would not vote for liberal AOC. Besides, most New Yorkers would rather order take out and not harvest crops. AOC and other liberals, four of them represent New Hampshire, constantly preach climate change. Just give this a little thought. We cannot predict the weather beyond a week at best and these people feel educated to the point they know what will happen to the climate in twelve years. Liberals never seem to think things through. Nancy Pelosi who lives inside a walled compound in San Fransisco lets the homeless treat the city like an open toilet. If you do not believe me just drive through, but do not stop. The liberals want to rezone the suburbs throughout the country through Federal legislation which will make local control obsolete which is not conjecture but fact. The liberal ideology is quite simple meaning we need to turn the whole world green. Just put

the government in control and get rid of Capitalism. Socialism will make your life better because everyone will have the same which is to say no one will have anything. Just imagine, a free house, free health care, free college and if you choose not to work, free money. I get giddy just thinking about it. AOC along with the support of New Hampshire’s two Senators and two Representatives want to raise 100 trillion dollars in new taxes to pay for the Green New Deal which is on top of the 30 trillion we already owe. How do we accomplish this ? It’s easy. Just print more money. I still can remember Representative Annie Kuster dancing around in jubilation inside the Senate Chamber wearing her white dress next to AOC expressing their Democratic values promoting an endless supply of money. Common sense values are needed now if the country is going to remain vibrant. It is time to show the door to political leaders who never answer the difficult questions while constantly asking for your vote. It is time to do the right thing. Kenneth Bowers Wolfeboro, NH.

School Choice Options Are Changing

To The Editor: If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a parent, or have friends or neighbors who are. Baby Boomer, Gen X, or Millennial— the K-12 school scene has changed so much since we were

kids. Understanding these changes can help moms and dads guide their children to greater learning, success, and happiness. So: here are the three biggest changes affecting education in New Hampshire and across the U.S. today, and what these changes mean for your family. First, school choice opportunities have broadened over the last generation. That means parents have more options for where to send their children to school. For example: traditional public schools have adopted more flexible enrollment policies. Charter school laws have passed in 45 states, including New Hampshire. More families are aware they can choose public magnet programs, where kids receive education with a special focus, like STEM or the arts. Today, New Hampshire students in families below a certain income level are eligible for publicly run scholarships and, as of 2021, Education Freedom Accounts, which provide families funds to spend more flexibly on education expenses. Students in certain New Hampshire towns may also be eligible for the state’s tuitioning program, allowing them to attend schools in other communities. Plus, a growing number of New Hampshire families are choosing homeschooling. A second game-changer since when we were kids is that there’s now more community support for making school choices. There are also more resources for parents to help them find schools and learning environments that meet their children’s needs. I’ve worked in K-12 education for more than See MAILBOAT on 24

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

An Old Friend If you have been following me over the last twentysix years you probably know about the support group F.A.T.S.O. (If you have been by Brendan Smith following me Weirs Times Editor in other ways, I will call the cops.) F.A.T.S.O. stands for Flatlanders Adjusting To Solitary Oblivion and I started it many years ago with my friend Vinnie, who is originally from The Bronx and also now lives here year-round as well. I hadn’t seen Vinnie for years, nor had I talked about him. (I always wanted to use the word “nor.”) Many of you have asked about him, So, I thought I would tell the story. It was about twenty-five years ago when we started F.A.T.S.O. to help new transplants adjust to their first winters here in New Hampshire. Like us, many of those who signed up were from New York. (Maybe they trusted our accents.) The two of us together did some good work. We were unknowns when we first started out and we worked well together. Even when we didn’t agree on something we still came to terms quickly realizing we were just strengthening the cause. After a few years F.A.T.S.O. became a force to be reckoned with. It took on a sort of life of its own and grew by leaps and bounds as our mission spread from the initial confines of the Lakes Region to points across the state. We even grew a few tentacles that reached to Maine and Vermont. Of course, with great power comes great responsibility. What is not mentioned as often is that with great power comes some disappointment at times. Vinnie and I were the closest of friends when F.A.T.S.O started,

but it wasn’t long until it became a power struggle. We were becoming a force as we grew. What was once denied transplanted to New Hampshire (real Brooklyn Bagels and potato knishes for example) were soon appearing in supermarkets across the state after weeks of protests and lobbying at the State House in Concord. (Was one representative paid off in a year’s supple of knishes? That has never been proven.) Sure, we were only in the frozen food section, a small victory, but a victory nonetheless. (Always wanted to use nonetheless as well.) How could we have even more influence? It was obvious, so we started the Flatlander Party to grow our own real voice. That is when the trouble really started. It was time to put up a candidate in the next gubernatorial election (which means for governor, not guber). There were only two obvious candidates – Vinnie and myself. I was happy to let Vinnie be the one, but internal polling proved different. We were equal in our passion, but as the candidate thing goes, I held a slight edge in looks. It was 2000 and the candidates from the other two parties weren’t exactly eye candy, so we thought any advantage would help. I graciously accepted the nomination and tried to rally the group together for the next fight. We knew we wouldn’t win this first time out, but we felt we could bring the needs of the group more to the forefront. What could be better than a real slice of New York style pizza that didn’t have to be microwaved? Vinnie took over the day to day operations of F.A.T.S.O. while I focused on my campaign. Obviously, my repeated attempts in running for Governor failed and there were more than a few times that I was ready to throw in the towel. (I was now in my sixties and had lost that

little bit of attractive factor I had early on.) Over th e course of time F.A.T.S.O. had fallen on hard times. Vinnie wasn’t really into it that much, he had never really gotten over that initial rejection by the group. Add into that a few mild winters when new transplants felt like they didn’t need any help and things got even worse. F.A.T.S.O. basically faded away. But then came the peaceful riots in 2020 and then the Covid lockdowns and a new slew of Flatlanders came running from the cities, paying ridiculous prices for homes here unseen, looking for a more peaceful way of life. As winter made its way in, soon the phone at F.A.T.S.O. was ringing off the hook. People were scared, they had nowhere to turn. One new transplant found out my cell phone number and called me. He said he didn’t know what to do, had nowhere to turn and was now at his wits end.(His favorite restaurant he enjoyed here in the summer was closed in the winter, among other things.) Soon the phone rang again and again and again. I knew I could no longer turn my back on my people. I dusted off my old copies of the by-laws and called back all who had called me. I told them to bring their friends to a meeting. It was bittersweet to see the place once again packed wall-to- wall. It was then I saw Vinnie in the front row; a sheepish smile across his face. I went up to him and gave him a hug. The crowd erupted. Whether we liked it or not, F.A.T.S.O. was back. Now we just needed to make it work again. Associated Press = Associated Propaganda If nothing else, the past two years have demonstrated with blazing clarity how the ruling elites live by one set of rules and impose an entirely separate set of rules on the unfavored, ostracized, dispossessed and deplatformed. As a member of the print, broadcast and internet media for the past 30 years, I cannot emphasize enough how complicit by Michelle Malkin so-called mainstream journalists are in Syndicated Columnist perpetuating such double standards and stoking hatred of dissidents. The Fourth Estate will spare no one -- not even the dead -- in its ruthless pursuit of absolute power over political narratives. Let us consider a widely disseminated hit piece by Associated Press investigative reporter Michael Biesecker published on Jan. 3. Here’s the bias-laden title that reads more like an MSNBC op-ed whine than a straight news headline: “Ashli Babbitt a Martyr? Her Past Tells a More Complex Story.” Ashli Babbitt, as you may know, is the 35-year-old Air Force veteran and Trump supporter shot and killed by a Capitol police officer one year ago this week during the Jan. 6 “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington, D.C. The fetid article under the fetid headline is victim-blaming at its rock-bottom lowest. So, what exactly is the “more complex story” that the once-venerable AP wire service believes is so important for the public to know? Babbitt was involved in a complicated personal love triangle, had “bad blood” with her husband’s ex-wife, faced “numerous misdemeanors” related to a traffic encounter with the ex, and then was -- wait for it, it’s buried deep down in the article -- acquitted by a judge of all the criminal charges. That’s it. The rest of Biesecker’s steaming pile of vile is padded with disgruntled attacks against Babbitt by the still-seething exwife, plus extended point-and-sputter condemnations by the “investigative reporter” against Babbitt’s ideological stands and internet posts, topped off by resentful references to the fact that President Donald Trump and countless American citizens remain stalwart in their defense of Babbitt’s memory. The AP makes a grand performative show of its commitment to fighting bias. “We must be See MALKIN on 28

The Democrats’ Exploitation of Jan. 6 Gives Away Their Game This year, Jan. 6 will be commemorated with all the ballyhoo and rigamarole Democrats and their media allies can muster. CNN plans an entire special around the anniversary, titled “Live from the Capitol: Januby Ben Shapiro ary 6th, One Year Later”; Syndicated Columnist the show will feature the “heroes who protected our democracy in the face of an insurrection,” and will include interviews with such luminaries as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and January 6 Committee Chair Bennie Thompson, D-Miss. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are also expected to commemorate Jan. 6 with special remarks, and Pelosi has organized a bevy of events in memory of the riot. Now, you might ask yourself just why Jan. 6 merits such outsized attention. One need not downplay the events -- the horrifying image of rioters bashing police officers with metal poles, storming through the halls of Congress shouting for Mike Pence -- in order to recognize Jan. 6 for what it was: an ugly but not pivotal moment in American history. The event resulted in one direct death -- rioter Ashli Babbitt was shot by a Capitol police officer -- and some $1.5 million in property damage to the Capitol building; the Capitol was cleared within hours of the riot, and Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell promptly presided over the certification of the 2020 election. Those who broke into the Capitol or even trespassed have ended up in jail. Meanwhile, by contrast, the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020 resulted in some $2 billion in insured property damage (and likely billions more in uninsured property damage), two dozen people died, and the resultant political movement against the police led to an unprecedented nationwide spike in homicides in major cities. To date, there have been no commemorations from

CNN, speeches from Biden or Harris, or a day honoring the police officers who held rioters in check. So, what lies behind the Democratic-media obsession with Jan. 6? Political opportunism. Democrats aren’t even hiding the ball. Facing the ever-likelier prospect of a 2022 midterm wipeout, Democrats have hit on a strategy: they have to rig the electoral rules and overthrow traditional democratic institutions in order to stop Republicans from rigging the electoral rules and overthrowing traditional democratic institutions. Jan. 6, to opportunistic Democrats, is the all-purpose excuse to use the entire weight of their party to push for a radical revision of Senate rules and federal elections. As Politico reported this week, “Democrats are hoping that Thursday will be more than just a day of remembrance. In the Senate, we hear from well-positioned sources, there’s a desire to take the opportunity to supercharge the party’s long-stalled voting rights legislation -- possibly even using the anniversary to try to get Sens. Krysten Sinema, D-Ariz., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va, to go nuclear on the filibuster or embrace rules changes.” Yes, the electoral village must be burned in order to stop future events similar to Jan. 6. As The New York Times editorialized, “Every Day Is January 6 Now,” arguing, “the Capitol riot continues in statehouses across the country, in a bloodless, legalized form that no police officer can arrest and that no prosecutor can try in court.” The only plausible response is to federalize election procedures constitutionally given to the states, to mandate the corrupt practice of ballot harvesting, to mandate long periods of early voting and universal absentee ballots, to loosen voter verification, and much more. All because of Jan. 6. Or, perhaps, because Democrats can read the writing on the wall. They know that November 2022 cometh, and that right soon. And they hope that if they invoke the specter of Jan. 6 reSee SHAPIRO on 27

Moving Forward

by John Stossel

Syndicated Columnist

Independents are now America’s largest group of voters. After George Bush’s presidency, fewer people called themselves Republicans. After Obama’s, fewer called themselves

Democrats. How will these independents vote? Andrew Yang hopes they’ll vote for him. In my latest video, the former Democrat explains why he’s started a new party, the Forward Party.

“Our country is polarized and getting worse all the time ... seeing each other as mortal enemies ... I’m committed to doing everything I can to help change it.” He’s written a book about that, “Forward.” Compared with most politicians, Yang is refreshing. He opposes censoring people for what they say. “Saturday Night Live” fired a comedian after he called Yang a “Jew Chink.” Yang tells me, “I didn’t think that was right ... he’s a comedian. It’s his job to push boundaries.” Yang says other things presidential candidates don’t say, like: “Running for president requires traits that make

you a terrible leader. You make false promises (and) regularly claim powers you do not have.” He cites worker retraining as an example. Governments keep funding expensive job training -- the federal government alone has 43 retraining programs, but they almost never work. Many promise computer-coding jobs, but Yang points out, “If you actually go to a town that had the plant close, you find no one working as a coder. ... People walk out with valueless certificates and no job.” Unfortunately, Yang’s plan to help people, a universal basic income, may be even worse. Yang would simply give every adult

$1,000 a month. But the United States is already going bankrupt, and a UBI would give more of your tax money even to people who don’t need it. Yang’s UBI wouldn’t even replace existing welfare programs (Charles Murray’s proposal), so a drug user could just snort up $1,000 and apply for more handouts. His plan would encourage lazy people to stay lazy. People like me, when I was young. I say to Yang, “I wouldn’t have overcome my stuttering and worked as hard as I did if I had free money. Not having it ... drove me.” “I’m a data guy,” he replies, claiming See STOSSEL on 29

The Miracle Of Bugs John Metzler is of this week.

by Rich Lowry

Syndicated Columnist

“Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.” Proverbs 6:6

Edward O. Wilson, the Harvard biologist who has died at age 92, is most famous for his contributions to evolutionary biology, but he built his career on ants. He wrote multiple books on the insects, including a 700-page encyclopedic work in 1990 that has to count as one of the least likely winners of the Pulitzer Prize ever.

Despite his agnosticism and the reductive materialism of his Darwinism, Wilson wrote with a real warmth and soulfulness. Amidst his storied academic career and the controversies kicked up by his theories, it’s worth considering all he did to highlight the miraculous complexity and wonders of life via a lowly bug that is considered a pest when it isn’t ignored altogether. There are more than 15,000 discovered species of ant, and perhaps another 10,000 yet to be found. Wilson exulted in the dizzying variety -- ants that can walk under water to find dead insects, or glide from one branch of a tree to another, or create super-colonies that extend for miles. If ants are extraordinarily di-

verse, their social organization makes East Berlin look fun and free by comparison. As Wilson wrote, “Karl Marx was right, socialism works, it is just that he had the wrong species.” Ants have all the regard for individual dignity of a Mongol chieftain and a power structure out of the Ottoman court. Pretty much every ant you see doing something is a female. The males are pitiable creatures, good for nothing except their one-time task of trying to inseminate a female. Among fire ants, would-be queens work together to try to establish a new nest. As soon as they’ve given birth to worker ants, though, the game of thrones begins. The workers seek out and kill all the queens,

leaving only the one that is most fecund. Ant colonies take slaves and fight wars of extinction. Henry David Thoreau wrote of an ant battle he observed at Walden Pond: “They fought with more pertinacity than bulldogs. Neither manifested the least disposition to retreat. It was evident that their battle cry was ‘Conquer or die.’” The massive and intricate level of cooperation of an ant colony is something to behold. Mark Twain spoofed an ant’s crazy struggles upon discovering a grasshopper leg, lugging it the opposite way from home before she “gets madder and madder, then presently hoists it into the air and goes tearing away See LOWRY on 27

rectly to consumers. These are defined as for “mild to moderate” hearing loss. How do you know what is mild to moderate hearing loss? That is the challenge. If your hearing is worse than the effect of sticking your fingers in your ears, you need professional help. Many products proclaim you don’t need a hearing evaluation and that you can adjust them with your phone, yourself. That is true and not true. Think of these hearing products as being similar to the “cheater” glasses you can buy anywhere. They will help in some circumstances. They will be less expensive. They will not work well for more challenging hearing problems or challenging listening situations. With “Direct to Consumer,” or sometimes called “Over The Counter” hearing products, you will be able to purchase on-line or go to your favorite retail store. It’s possible that, if you have the right “Smart” phone with the right version of software, you will be able to adjust some aspects of the sound coming from these products. While you can make some adjustments with a “smart” phone, those adjustments will be far more limited than what an Audiologist can do. You can obtain DTC hearing products without a professional hearing test. We all know you

need a “real” eye exam to purchase “real” glasses. You will find the same is true when taking care of your hearing. Just like with your eyes, a professional evaluation by an Audiologist is the best way to identify what your hearing needs are. These days, your professional Audiologist can test a lot more than just beep sounds in the soundcontrolled booth. Your Audiologist can measure how well you perform when there are multiple voices talking, how loud is too loud, and what level you prefer to listen to. The professional evaluation performed by your Audiologist is directly comparable between providers located around the country and over time. Your Audiologist will monitor for indications of health problems that may need medical attention. Your Audiologist can also screen and monitor aspects of mental cognition that predict hearing aid feature needs and changes in mental function. There are some significant details are glossed over in advertising campaigns for DTC hearing products. One is related to the maximum loudness. Direct to Consumer aids are currently capable of producing sound up to 120dB. OSHA requires hearing protection at 85dB. Thus, be very careful not to set them too loud.

YOU COULD CAUSE INCREASED HEARING LOSS when listening through these products. In many cases, treating hearing loss is more complicated than treating vision loss. A simple product, adjusted by a simple phone ap is not going to give adequate hearing assistance because it does not provide adequate measurement of your needs. Use of DTC hearing aids will help you to some extent. Use of advanced technology that is available and programmed by your Audiologist will give your hearing greater assistance. Remember that hearing aids provided through your Audiologist: *Can be professionally re-adjusted as your hearing needs change *Have an option to easily exchange to a different model during your introductory period. *Come with the option for a refund of your instrument costs. The refund is provided minus the cost of services you have received. It is available you decide, during the introductory period, not to continue with your hearing aids. *Have blue-tooth connectivity so that you can hear a phone conversation directly in your hearing aid. This helps you clearly hear the person talking and gives you more See EARS on 26

Gray Matters On Becoming A Perfectionist

Happy & Healthy New Year! by Leslie Gray, LCMHC

Gray Matters Counseling & Wellness

Imagine doing everything perfectly, all the time. Sounds lovely, really. A flawless existence in every aspect of life. Perfect parenting resulting in perfect children. Perfect workout to set you up for the perfect day. Perfect hair, makeup, and outfit. Perfect commute to the office. Perfect attendance and performance at work. Perfect dinner despite working all day and taking care of the kids, pets, house, etc. A perfectly perfect existence. Are you exhausted yet? I am. Perfectionism is both a blessing and a curse. For many, mostly the latter. The trouble with perfectionism is that it is often unachievable. Striving for perfection can create unattainable goal setting that results in feeling discouraged followed closely by procrastination, avoidance, and false starts… ultimately producing the exact opposite of perfection: failure. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Truth be told, perfectionism tops the list of personal struggles for

many of the clients I have worked with over the years. For some folks, perfectionism is hinged with obsessivecompulsiveness which is hinged with anxiety. In this case, seek out a professional to help you sort that out so you can get some relief. A movement began some time back that is still going strong today that suggests we could reach a point of being ‘good enough’. The good enough parent, partner, and so on. (Perfectionists everywhere just simultaneously cringed at the mere notion of being good enough.) Regardless, let’s just imagine we are able to adopt this mentality of being ‘good enough’. Just as is the case with perfectionism, the dilemma of knowing when we have arrived remains. Life is full of measuring tools: sticks,

rulers, tape measures, protractors, scales, thermometers, thermostats, calipers. We measure the speed of drivers, grade papers and projects, score the performance of athletes. In the area of physical health, we measure with height and weight charts, BMIs, and test results. We measure financial success with credit scores, socioeconomic comparisons, and debt-to-income ratios. Further, we have created rules associated with all forms of measuring to say this is good, this is great, this is perfect… or this is simply unacceptable. If you’re feeling discouraged, stay with me. I’m almost there. I promise it gets better. The truth is perfection is not actually defined as flawlessness. Neither is being ‘good enough’. Actually, both refer to achieving something to the degree of it

being as free from flaw as possible. In other words, what might be perfect in one instance would not necessarily be so in another. Think of perfection as in being ‘just right’ as opposed to it being award-winning. (Unless of course you are actually competing for an award.) For example, imagine your job is to provide a healthy, fun meal for your child’s birthday party. Your inner perfectionist really wants to impress the parents of your child’s friends, so you go full gourmet. Now, although you may end up creating a work of art on a plate that looks too good to eat, you have actually exceeded expectations and missed the mark of perfection because the outcome is not wellsuited for the situation (Not to mention you will end up with a

gaggle of hungry children on your hands.) Those parents you were trying to please will undoubtedly be less-thanimpressed. Perfection is achieved through proportionality to the situation. A perfect parent of a newborn or toddler is pro-

viding love, health, and safety for their child. I guarantee that little person under your care does not care (or even notice) the dust bunnies under the couch. There will be time for sweeping those out later. So, let it be and See GRAY on 26

said about the underlying reasons for this, but the good news is that even if you fall into the latter category, it’s never too late to take meaningful steps toward actively creating a life that aligns with your values and dreams. Rather than an all or nothing approach, the steps below create shifts in our awareness that can lead to deep, lasting change. Connect with the unique meaning and core values your goals represent for you, and envision yourself embodying those changes. Rather than making changes based on what you believe you should be doing, such as losing weight to lower your BMI, take time to identify what is most important to you and how making lifestyle changes will

help you live in better alignment with your answer. Perhaps you have younger family members you adore, and by making decisions that support your overall health you’ll be more likely to engage in their lives more fully for longer. Visualize yourself attending future milestone events and having the energy to help assist them through these rites of passage. Take an honest assessment of where you are now, including your need for additional support and environmental changes. When focusing on the version of yourself you’re creating, how would that version of you respond to your current environment and relationships? Taking honest stock of where you are will not only help you set more

realistic goals in terms of the steps needed to reach your intended outcome, but will also help you identify ways your environment may need to be adjusted to support your growth. While this can mean seeking professional help, many times it includes finding a supportive community of like-minded individuals who share your core values and are actively living the lifestyle of your envisioned self. Identify one action step you can take in the direction of your envisioned ideal state. Rather than feeling pressure to go all in all at once, it’s often a series of small, sustainable efforts accumulated over time that have the biggest impact. Tip Up Fishing

Contributing Writer

Spend a few minutes talking ice fishing with me and you’ll likely hear me say that I prefer not to use tip ups when ice fishing. I’m more of a mobile ice angler and tip ups (sometimes) act like anchors. It seems like I no sooner get my tip ups in the water, than I am ready to move again. However, I recognize that there are days when certain species, especially the lake trout and white perch in Lake Winnipesaukee, will only eat a live smelt. Sometimes it’s harder to be mobile because I’m with a large group of people. If I want to catch fish on those days, I must step outside my comfort zone and set some tip ups. Besides, the majority of my clients love chasing flags and making sure they have fun catching fish is a priority. When I’m guiding and fish are on the move, I find it especially advantageous to put out a few tip ups. Also, the larger the group, the harder it is to move everyone around, and the more I will rely on tip ups to help pick away at spread out fish. They not only make excellent scouting tools, because you can spread them out, but they serve as indicators to let you know if you’ve missed your mark, or if the fish are traveling just out of range. On Lake Winnipe-

“I sometimes consider tip ups to be anchors that keep me from moving, but sometimes those anchors catch fish,” Tim Moore says.

Covering water can be the difference between fish and no fish. saukee, each angler is allowed two lines, which means everyone can jig and have one tip up in the water. With larger groups that’s a lot more lines in the water than jigging alone. I can spread them out over an area and increase the number of fish caught, es-

pecially on days when the fish prefer live bait. On most other lakes in New Hampshire, the limit is six lines per angler, which can mean far more fish than just jigging. Fishing tip ups also helps locate nomadic schools of fish that might otherwise swim by just out of

sight of your set up. Tip ups can be effective on large expansive mud flats, such as those found on lakes like Lake of the Woods in northern Minnesota. Fishing mud flats can be hit or miss, since you’re waiting for fish to cruise by. If you’re fishing for food, spreading out tip ups can add valuable fish to your fish fry. Like most ice fishing gear, advancements and innovations have given anglers far more choices than ever before when it comes to tip up fishing. More choices in tip up designs can make tip up selection a bit more daunting, but more choices also means anglers can tailor even their tip up fishing to meet storage requireSee MOORE on 26

R.I.P Sam – And Sports Greats in the Celtic backcourt during the mid-sixties? (Answer follows)

by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

Time marches on. Clocks keeps ticking. While sports contests can be delayed by timeouts, eventually every game ends. And so it is with living. Every life eventually ends. An annual year-end ritual involves remembering those whom we lost during the previous 12 months, to include sports figures. To include Sam Jones, who passed away on December 30. I only caught the tailend of Sam’s Boston Celtic career but his final game at the Boston Garden featured one of the most unforgettably poignant sports moments ever. It was Game 6 of the 1969 NBA Finals and Boston trailed the mighty L.A. Lakers 3 games to 2. The series would have been over except for a last-second jumper by Sam that gave the Celtics a onepoint victory in Game 4. Sam had earlier announced his retirement so everyone knew it would be his last home game. (It would also be Bill Russell’s last home game, but no one knew that at the time—except maybe Russell.) Sam was the first Celtic starter to be introduced and the ensuing ovation went on and on. Tears were shed freely as Sam stood there by himself on the parquet floor. I still remember

Born Today That is to say, sports standouts born on January 13 include auto racing legend A.J. Foyt (1935) and three-time National League MVP Albert Pujols (1980).

Boston would win its 11th title in 13 years with a 108-106 triumph at the Fabulous Forum. Sam Jones, old #24, would score 24 points. (Bill Russell, old #6, would score 6 points in what would be his last game ever as well.) A ten-time NBA champion, Sam played during an era when NBA salaries were low and in retirement he often served as a substitute schoolteacher in greater Washington D.C. He was married to Gladys Chavis until her death in 2018. Together they had five children. He remained a gentleman and an inspiration all his life. He even served two years in the U.S. Army. His departure thins the ranks of the

Christmas, New Year’s actually, and we were gathered as a family to exchange gifts. Along with the gifts from one to another, there were extras. Someone had decided to glean their Christmas closet of stray gifts squirreled away over the years. Multiple shopping bags filled with all manner of household items were under the tree. It was as if Santa had stopped at the local “Five and Ten” just before closing on the night of his appointed rounds to bulk up the sleigh. Those bags had everything from linens to throws and kitchenwares to air fresheners. You name it, it was probably in there. This was an unexpected highlight of the evening, all of us laughing in the moment as we watched with anticipation to

see just what was going to come out of those bags next. Some items were snatched up quicker than you could focus. It was like being at an auction, the bidding so fast, the gavel dropping before you even knew what you had bought. While other items just sort of quieted the room, a real “hot potato” with no takers, everyone looking aimlessly away for fear that making eye contact would somehow create ownership. It was at this moment that the suggestion was made to give it to Hunter for his “Bachelor’s Trousseau”, and from that point on, if no one called “dibs”, it went to him. The rest of us laughing while breathing a quiet sigh of relief. Let’s face it, one can only use so many egg timers, tea infus-

ers, and turkey hooks, but a young man on his way to one day being out on his own, (hope s p r i n g s eternal) he would need all manner of household goods. At this point some of you may be asking, “What’s a Trousseau?” Good question, I’m glad you asked. A trousseau (pronounced True-so.), historically speaking, refers to the hope chest and contents (some say dowry) that the bride brought with her into the marriage. Over the years it came to reference more of a collection of items, particularly linens and household goods, given to the woman who leaves home and sets up house for her groom. Fast forward to the twenty-first century and it has taken on more of a gender neutral term referring to the box of goods and sundry items needed to successfully start off on your own. (Author’s definition.) Needless to say, the comment got me thinking about how ill prepared I was when I moved out on my own. How many of us were properly set up for housekeeping when we started keepSee FEAST on 20

Letters From God This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

in sickness & disease and a host of maladies that shortened their lives. When I destroyed the earth in the flood, because of the widespread rebellion and sin so that only 8 people, Noah and his family, who obeyed me were saved, their lifespan dropped to 120 years(Genesis 6:3). As mankind continued to sin and as they continued to suffer ill effects in their bodies, it would drop to 70-80 years at the time of the writing of the Psalms, 1,000 BC. BC was the designation of time as being B efore C hrist, my Son, visited the earth and became the pivotal point in the recording of time due to His dramatic effect on history. Just as I told Adam & Eve, that should they disobey and be separated from me they would die; it was realized not only in physical death but also in the average length of life. Many among you never make it this long due to poverty and poor nutrition, so much of which is due to the sinfulness of greed, abuse, oppression and rejection of me. Of course, some may live somewhat longer and some shorter, but this explains the decline. Since you asked, let me challenge you with some thoughts. None of this death process was my will or design. Everything has been a result of your decisions to rebel against me and practice things that are against my will and which I ex-

pressly told you would bring death. So many have resulted in instant death. Other resulted in sickness, suffering and death over a protracted period of your life. But you must also know, that unless you turn back to me and allow me to forgive you and restore your relationship with me so that I can once again pass my life into you, your condition will only worsen. Sadly, because of ignorance and pride you not only have not returned to me, but you have distanced yourself more than ever. You are living in ways that are radically contrary to my will and ways. These practices will only bring further decay and death. It will occur both naturally, because you have failed to follow my wisdom of what is right and healthy for you, but also because you are forcing me, as a loving Father, to bring punishment. Please know that I do this because you don’t learn righteousness when there are no consequences for wrongdoing (Isaiah 26:9-10). You just keep on moving toward “hell in a handbasket,” oblivious to impending death in life and for eternity. If your human fathers never disciplined you when you were doing wrong, they would not love you. They would stand by and watch as you self-destructed, when their loving discipline could have motivated you to come to your senses and back to life (Hebrews 12: 7-11).

Letters From God

QUESTION: Why Don’t People Live As Long As They Did After Creation? It is good that you noticed that fact. Did you also notice that when I created the first man and woman, they were perfect, without sin or defect? I also planned that they would live forever in that condition and in a perfect environment. I told them however, that since I am the source of life, they could only enjoy this condition if they obeyed me. Apart from me they would die. I have no sin and because I created them with no sin or disobedience, they remained in relationship with me and I gave them life in all its fullness. It included living forever in a perfect environment (Genesis 2:16-17). When they chose to disobey and sin, they were cut off from me and they immediately began to die. Having been created perfect, they lived a long time before they died physically. One of their descendants, Methuselah, lived 969 years (Genesis 5:27). Over time their descendants continued to sin, and this brought further judgment and shorter lifespans. One reason is the decaying DNA within them over generations resulted

I must also remind you, that if you continue on your course and in anyway think I offend you, wait until you meet the Devil. I created him before I created you and all humanity. Like many of you, he rebelled against me. He deceived Adam & Eve into death when he promised them life. He hates me and you, whom I have created. If you reject me, you will have your choice and you will live with him for eternity. I called this hell for it will be hell, living with someone so evil and those he has deceived for eternity. I am the author of life and I created you to live forever. Return to me and I will forgive your sins because my Son died to take your penalty, and I will bless you with eternal life. That’s a deal you can refuse, because I have given you free will to choose, but I hope you don’t. I love you, God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

Should Inflation Affect Your Investment Moves?

As you know, inflation heated up in 2021, following years of pretty stable – and low – numbers. And now, early in 2022, we’re still seeing elevated prices. As a consumer, you may need to adjust your activities somewhat, but as an investor, how should you respond to inflation? First, it helps to know the causes of this recent inflationary spike. Essentially, it’s a case of basic economics – strong demand for goods meeting inadequate supply, caused by material and labor shortages, along with shipping and delivery logjams. In other words, too many dollars chasing too few goods. Once the supply chain issues begin to ease and consumer spending moves from goods to services as the COVID-19 pandemic wanes, it’s likely that inflation will moderate, but it may still stay above pre-pandemic levels throughout 2022. Given this outlook, you may want to review your investment portfolio. First, consider stocks. Generally speaking, stocks can do well in inflationary periods because companies’ revenues and earnings may increase along with inflation. But some sectors of the stock market typically do better than others during inflationary times. Companies that can pass along higher costs to consumers due to strong demand for their goods – such as firms that produce building materials or supply steel or other commodities to other businesses – can do well. Conversely, companies that sell nonessential goods and services, such as appliances, athletic apparel and entertainment, may struggle more when prices are rising. Of course, it’s still a good idea to own a variety of stocks from various industries because it can help reduce the impact of market volatility on any one sector. And to help counteract the effects of rising prices, you might also consider investing in companies that have a long track record of paying and raising stock dividends. (Keep in mind, though, that these companies are not obligated to pay dividends and can reduce or discontinue them at any time.)

Apart from stocks, how can inflation affect other types of investments? Think about bonds. When you invest in a bond, you receive regular interest payments until the bond matures. But these payments stay the same, so, over time, rising inflation can eat into your bond’s future income, which may also cause the price of your bond to drop – a concern if you decide to sell the bond before it matures. The impact of inflation is especially sharp on the price of longerterm bonds because of the cumulative loss of purchasing power. However, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) can provide some protection against inflation. The face value, or principal amount, of each TIPS is $1,000, but this principal is adjusted based on changes in the U.S. Consumer Price Index. So, during periods of inflation, your principal will increase, also increasing your interest payments. When inflation drops, though, your principal and interest payments will decrease, but you’ll never receive less than the original principal value when the TIPS mature. Talk to your financial advisor to determine if TIPS may be appropriate for you. Ultimately, inflation may indeed be something to consider when managing your investments. But other factors – especially your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals – should still be the driving force behind your investment decisions. A solid investment strategy can serve you well, regardless of whether prices move up or down.

Ring-billed gulls on a beach in New England. by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

Gulls? Who would want to write a column about gulls? Or, perhaps more important, who would want to read a column about gulls? Well, I think gulls deserve a little ink considering how easy they are to find and how many of them there are. Nary a visit to any body of water goes by when you don’t see gulls, whether you want to or not. Not many parking lot visits go gull-less either. The other day I stood near a small lake and looked over the water. A pair of male ringnecked ducks were right smack in the middle of the pond

and about a dozen hooded mergansers hunted at the far end. Three mute swans graced the east end, a brant swam aimlessly here and there, and a smattering of Canada geese could be seen at various spots on the pond. All the while, white blotches dotted the surface of the water and flew slowly around the scene. I barely noticed the gulls, even though they were the most plentiful species. They are so common that they tend to become part of the landscape, like trees or rocks. Among birders, there are as many opinions on gulls as there are choices for spotting scopes or binoculars. Annoyance; fondness;

indifference. Whatever your feelings about gulls, there’s no doubt that they hold an important place in the bird world. A species that prolific and widespread is bound to have an impact, either positive or negative. Directly and indirectly, the explosion of the gull population has had an adverse effect on the population of other seabirds. Gulls, of course, are opportunistic feeders. Basically, they’ll eat anything, just visit the local landfill or McDonald's dumpster for proof of that. But their diet also includes the eggs and young of other birds, such as terns and other seabirds. Gulls also need

space to nest and raise their young. They compete with terns — many species of which are endangered or threatened — for breeding space and the gulls usually win out. Gulls have size and numbers on their side, especially greater black-backed gulls. They’re huge. Efforts are being made up and down the coast to give the terns a fair chance. One such project took place on the Isle of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire. Gulls do have their redeeming qualities. For one, they often make interesting photographic subjects and they are usually quite cooperative. Fishermen also See BOSAK on 27

FEAST from 14 ing house? Not me. Fortunately, my wife had her own place already because I didn’t have much to add, being a bachelor for less than 24 minutes (Yes, 24 minutes! From the time I stepped out of the car until I said “I do”. Before that I lived with mom and dad.) I had a few springform pans, a knife roll, a duffle full of clothes, and a truck full of holes. (I know what you’re thinking, “Oh boy! What a catch!”) But this isn’t about me, it’s about the trousseau. A trousseau would be the perfect gift to build for someone you love and want to help start off

on the right foot. It can be as big as a steamer trunk or as small as a shoe box. Regardless of size, it is what goes inside that matters most. Gift cards, cash, keepsakes, linen of all kinds; sheets, pillowcases, dish towels, even a set of bath towels, pot holders, or a handmade blanket. All those silly little things that you never think about but need on that first night or two of living on your own. Kitchen tools and utensils, maybe even the family Silverware. (Yes, I know, much of the family silverware went with the last generation during the great silver meltdown of 1980.)

But perhaps a box of flatware and a table setting (plates and cups) for 6 or 8. Both make a great gift for the trousseau. And it beats picking up a bunch of chipped mugs at the local swap shop. Let’s face it; cooking up a menu of scrambled burger, frozen corn niblets, and mac and cheese out of a box for that special someone may get you a sympathetic, “Oh, how thoughtful.” But to serve this culinary masterpiece on paper and plastic isn’t exactly hitting a over the wall, out of the park, Grand Slam! What to put it all in, will be determined by what you are putting in it. Gift cards to grocery and specialty stores to buy things for the home or apartment? Then something the size of a shoe box would work nicely. Maybe a nice decorative wood box that would look nice on the shelf. It’s both functional and reminds the person you are giving

it to of you. This too, is a great idea if you, the giver, are hard pressed for storage while awaiting the day of your son or daughter’s big move. If you do this, make sure to include a list of items that they may find helpful when starting their new place; linen, pantry items, kitchenware, etc. How about a steamer trunk? An old steamer trunk, used but not abused, never seems to lose its appeal. If you have the skills to refinish it, even better. Creating something that has charm, character, and is functional is always a plus. Maybe for a military enthusiast, an old GI footlocker would be more appealing? And, a really cool accessory for the Man Cave because once she moves in, you know that’s where that’s going. (Sorry ladies, but you know I’m right, OD Green is about as flattering to modern decor as shag rugs, harvest gold, and avocado green was to the 1970’s.) Got a trunk with a flat top? Great! Add a nice piece of glass with rounded edges, some rubber pads to keep it in place on top, and you’ve given them, not only a trunk full of gifts for their first place, but you have given them storage space, a coffee table, and memories of their first “Independence Day”. Perhaps you have even given them a place for their first Simple Feast.

CHAPMAN from 10 mindful around habits that will have been adjusted in your ideal state is a great place to start. For instance, rather than admonish yourself for not sticking perfectly to a new workout routine, pause when given the option of taking the elevator versus using the stairs. In that moment, envision your fully embodied self, and make the decision they would naturally make in that moment. You may surprise yourself with how effortlessly these small, mindful decisions add up without the pressure of having to make complex lifestyle changes all at once. Lastly, celebrate your successes, and reflect but move forward when you fall short. “Progress not perfection” is the name of the game here, and when we reflect on where we’ve fallen short with curiosity rather than defeat, we’re better

able to identify additional steps and environmental support needed to continue moving forward. By unabashedly congratulating yourself on even the smallest accomplishments, you’re rewiring a feedback loop that will allow you to find pleasure in the very micro decisions that create lasting change. Small changes in a supportive environment have an incredible impact over time, and they provide a built in antidote to the all or nothing approach that so often accompanies once a year resolutions. THAW from 1 baron. Harry Thaw has been described as not being very intelligent and of living a reckless and licentious life involving drug use, constant partying, womanizing, and abusive behavior to those around him. He was frequently in trouble with the law, but his money was used to enable him to escape some of the harsh consequences one would usually expect would fall on one living such a wild life. He was seen as a trouble maker in his childhood while attending a number of private schools. He attended the University of Pittsburgh, presumably to study law, and by using his family name and social status, transferred to Harvard from which he was expelled because of his bad behavior. Thaw received a monthly allowance from his family and money was also

spent by them in an attempt to cover up his destructive activities. It has been suggested that the word “playboy” was first used in reference to Harry Thaw. He is most known, however, for a deed that could not be hid from the public because it was done in sight of up to a thousand people on the roof of Madison Square Garden in New York City.

There, on June 25, 1906, towards the conclusion of a stage show on the roof-top theater, Thaw shot a prominent architect, Stanford White, killing him. The following trial of Thaw for murder, held in 1907, was labeled as “The Trial of the Century” and ended in a hung jury with jury members divided between guilty or not guilty. At the second trial, held in 1908, the jury found Harry Thaw not guilty by reason of insanity. The judge, however, sentenced Thaw to be incarcerated for the rest of his life at the Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Fishkill, New York. Stanford White had apparently been responsible for limiting Thaw’s access to certain elite social circles and had been a previous boyfriend of Evelyn Nesbit who became Thaw’s wife. Evelyn Nesbit moved from a small town in Pennsylvania to New York City at the age of 14 where she became a chorus girl, model, and actress. Pictures of her as painted by artists were soon found on postcards and in popular magazines of the day. She has been described “as the first genuine pin-up girl.” Stanford White began courting her when she

was fourteen and he was forty-seven. White was accused of drugging and raping Miss Nesbit, though she stayed with him for some time afterwards before meeting and eventually marrying Thaw. Thaw’s murder of White was partially intended as revenge for White’s treatment of Nesbit, an argument that Thaw used to contend that the murder was justified. So how did Harry Thaw find himself in New Hampshire? His legal team had failed to persuade the courts to have him released from Matteawan, so Thaw walked out of the insane asylum on his own and met someone, suspected of having been hired by his mother, who drove him to Sherbrooke, Quebec, in Canada. His lawyers fought to keep him from being extradited back to the United States. One of those lawyers, Louis St. Laurent, later became the Canadian Prime Minister. Somehow Thaw was transferred to Gorham, New Hampshire and placed under the jurisdiction of Coos County Sheriff Holman Drew. His place of residence, interestingly, was the Mt. Madison House. Harry Kendall Thaw in prison showing special treatment. THAW from 22 ed Thaw to be sent back to their state to be tried for escape from the asylum and Governor Felker of New Hampshire had to decide if he would comply. A New Hampshire court document reasoned that “The most serious argument on behalf of Thaw is that if he was insane when he contrived his escape, he could not be guilty of crime, while if he was not insane, he was entitled to be discharged; and that his confinement and other facts scattered through the record require us to assume that he was insane.” The court apparently had to decide to either grant bail to Thaw and release him or extradite him to New York. It was said that if bail was set and granted then Thaw would stay in New Hampshire and visit with friends, and, yes, he had some. According to the Concord Evening Monitor: “Thaw is very desirous of seeing more of New Hampshire than he has been permitted to see and he has in mind a tour of the western,

eastern and other sections. Mrs. Thaw is also enamored of New Hampshire and when it was suggested by a newspaper man the other day that she had better become a resident she replied that she was too good a Pennsylvanian to ever think of leaving that state.” Having received the report of the special commission with the opinion that Mr. Thaw was not insane and not a menace to society and should he be released on bail, Judge Aldrich

was to set a date for a hearing. The judge, however, was said to be suffering from a severe cold at the home of his son in Brookline, Mass. The trustee of Harry Kendall Thaw’s estate predicted that Thaw, if released on bail would return to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and go into business. According to the Concord Evening Monitor: “Dr. Austin Flint, alienist for the

Prisoner Harry Thaw with Coos County Sheriff Holman A. Drew and Deputy Sheriff Kelser, held after extradition from Canada. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS PHOTOS state,” that is, New York, “in the prosecution of Thaw, declared that he feared for his life if the release of the prisoner was granted without restrictions.” Governor Felker of New Hampshire agreed to have Harry Thaw extradited to New York State officials and the judge apparently let that decision stand because it was done. On July 16, 1915, a jury in New York

decided that Harry Kendall Thaw was no longer insane and set him free from incarceration. A year or so later he was sent to an insane asylum in Philadelphia where he stayed until 1924. Evelyn Nesbit gave birth to a son in 1910 of whom she said Thaw was the father, though he said he was not. He became involved with business ventures, had additional troubles

with law enforcement officials, settled disputes with his money, and died of a heart attack in Miami, Florida on February 22, 1947 at the age of 76. Born on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday; died on George Washington’s birthday, but not comparable to either. His story also gives credence to the statement that “money talks.”

out the process of transferring to public school outside of their zone, to offering bilingual application assistance, grassroots organizations are cutting the stress out of school searching. You can visit schoolchoiceweek.com/newhampshire to find com-

Third, a plethora of online learning environments have developed since our school days. These online schooling options are more comprehensive and focused than the emergency remote learning that many families experienced during the

pandemic. For example, New Hampshire middle and high school students can take courses, free of charge, full- or part-time, at Virtual Learning Academy Charter School. Besides official online schooling, resources like schoolhouse.world offer

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, January 13, 2022 — SHURTLEFF from 3 state clause which, is non-existent. The 1st Amendment simply forbids Congress from establishing a religion. At the time of the 1st Amendment’s ratification, several states including Massachusetts had state churches. Ironically, embedded in the E-mail was the city seal which is also on the official flag of Boston. It contains a Bible verse written in Latin from 1 Kings 8:57: “May the LORD our God be with us, as He was with our fathers.” That night, after receiving the city’s E-mail, I sent out a news release to local media outlets as well as some friends. Not one of the media outlets responded, but a friend, Lynne Roberts of Second Amendment Sisters, suggested that I contact Liberty Counsel lc.org -a Florida based Christian legal organization. I visited their web site and explained our issue. The next morning I received a call from Richard Mast, one of Liberty Counsel’s lawyers offering to take our case. Several weeks later, Liberty Counsel sent the city a demand letter giving them 30 days to either grant us the permit or a lawsuit would be forthcoming. The city never officially responded. Mayor Walsh did make an announcement to the media they would allow us to hold a ceremony and that we could bring Christian flags with but could not fly one on the city’s flagpole-the same flagpole where the bloodstained flags of Communist China and Cuba are welcomed. Since we can’t have a flag-raising ceremony

The Gadsden Flag. without raising a flag, we declined the offer. This time we received media attention, local and national including a front-page story in the Boston Herald. Liberty Counsel filed the lawsuit in July of 2018 at the Federal District Court in Boston. We lost at the lower levels including a 3-0 vote at the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals. In June of 2021, the case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and in September 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case. During every step of the way, there was much media coverage-local-

national and international. It was never our

intention to have this turn into a Supreme Court case. Therefore, we believe that God’s Hand is in this. The Supreme Court gets over 8,000 cases each year and usually only hears 1% of them. As mentioned above. on Tuesday, January 18, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments. We have received nineteen amicus briefs in our favor including a group of attorney generals from twelve states, Notre Dame, and surprisingly the A.C.L.U. and the U.S. Department of Justice. We also have nine amicus briefs against us including nine attorney generals-one of them

from Massachusetts, the National Council of Churches, and the Anti-Defamation League. https://www. scotusblog.com/casefiles/cases/shurtleffv-boston/ Liberty Counsel’s legal team led by its founder Mat Staver have done an excellent job and we are optimistic that the court will rule in our favor. A decision is expected in June of this year. Readers who would like a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution, may contact me at campconstitution1@ gmail.com

MOORE from 12 ments and fishing style. I have become a huge fan of the Trophy Thermal Tip Ups from Clam Outdoors. They are an insulated tip up that covers the hole and helps prevent it from freezing. They work surprisingly well at preventing freeze ups. Their 10.5-inch diameter means they will cover a 10-inch hole. I don’t fish a 10inch hole, but many anglers do. They also store nicely inside a 5-gallon bucket. Whether you’re trying to locate fish, fishing for food, or just love the fun of chasing flags, tip ups are not only a ton of fun, but they can be very productive. Use them to cover a diversity of areas and bottom types. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can jig and fish tip ups or fish only tip ups. Consider why you’re there and

decide if tip ups will be right for you that day. If you want to be more mobile, you may want to leave them at home. If you have kids or anyone who loves the surprise of the flag and the anticipation of finding out what is on the other end, then you might want to consider tip ups. Whether they are used as a tool to catch more fish, or a method of increasing the fun, I almost always have at least a couple with me. They are an electronic device used on a biological being, where they are exposed to moisture from perspiration or the environment, ear wax, being dropped, temperature extremes and other hazards on a regular basis. Just as your vehicle requires regular maintenance, so do your hearing aids. Recent research indicates that hearing aids are frequently exposed to enough moisture that it interferes with optimal sound performance. Most Audiologists have equipment to dry out this

After finding food, a scout tends to return to her nest in a straight line and then summon reinforcements that follow her path exactly. A species found in North Africa travels some 100 yards from its nest and then invariably finds its way back using cues from the sunlight. A species in the Kenyan rainforest uses the forest’s canopy as a map. Can ants create their own ark? Check. When water invades a nest of fire ants, the insects unite to create a living raft. They float along,

carrying the queen and eggs, larvae, and pupae until they find dry land again. Can they launch irresistible ground offensives? Yes, of course. One species sends as many as 700,000 ants out in a fan that moves as fast as 20-yards-anhour. It can be heard approaching and destroys and consumes all in its path on the rainforest floor, from other insects to scorpions and tarantulas, to lizards and birds. ward boy first engaged in his amateur naturalism -- a feeling that should rightly never be exhausted. “Our sense of wonder,” Wilson wrote, “grows exponentially: The greater the knowledge, the deeper the mystery and the more we seek knowledge to create new mystery.” Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.

SHAPIRO from 6 peatedly, Americans will shrug and allow them to usurp authority, violate rules, and rewrite voting procedure. It won’t work. But it should reveal to Americans just who Democrats are, and how little they actually care about Jan. 6 in the first place. Ben Shapiro, 37, is a graduate of UCLA and Harvard Law School, host of “The Ben Shapiro Show,” and editor-inchief of DailyWire.com. He is the author of the New York Times bestsellers “How To Destroy America In Three Easy Steps,” “The Right Side Of History,” and “Bullies.”

BOSAK from 19 appreciate gulls for at least one reason. When a gathering of gulls can be seen hovering over the water and dropping down for food, anglers know immediately where the fish are. Gulls can also be quite inspiringly resourceful. I’m not talking about rummaging through garbage or mugging threeyear-old children on the beach for potato chips. But it is interesting to watch them carry in their bills a closed clamshell into the air and drop the prey from a reasonable height onto a sidewalk or parking lot. Sometimes it takes three or

four tries, but the clam eventually cracks open and the gulls have a well-earned meal. I’m sure the clams disagree, but the ingenuity displayed by the gulls in this case is refreshing. Gulls are also allweather birds. Some migrate to warmer climates, but a lot will tough out even our most harsh winters. I remember canoeing on a bitter cold and windy day in northern New Hampshire. No moose, no loons, no herons, no fowl. Just a lone gull. Some birdwatchers, mostly advanced ones, love gulls. They stare at a huge flock of ring-billed gulls and herring gulls in the hopes of finding a rarity among them. Identifying these rare gulls is not for the faint of heart. Rare bird alerts in New England often include these rare gulls. So gulls do have their moments. Some people find gulls repulsive at worst and annoying at best. Others love them and make special trips to see them and maybe even feed them. Others are somewhere in the middle. I fall in the last category, I think. I appreciate their resourcefulness and understand why people like the challenge of finding rarities, but I usually don’t pay much attention when I see them. 28 MALKIN from 6 fair,” its online statement on “news values and principles” asserts. “Whenever we portray someone in a negative light, we must make a real effort to obtain a response from that person.” Just to reiterate: Ashli Babbitt is dead. She is unable to defend herself against the clearly calculated and anniversary-timed sliming and smearing by “investigative reporter” Biesecker. That doesn’t seem to have bothered the AP ethics gurus one bit. Biesecker’s bio touts his status as a “2019 Pulitzer finalist,” but his trashy

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, January 13, 2022 — piece of trash trashing Ashli Babbitt doesn’t even rise to the level of People magazine or TMZ. It’s pure manure. Look: We all know if Ashli Babbitt had been black and had been shot and killed at a Defund the Police rally, the AP (which I’ve long said stands for Associated Propaganda) would be ramming the martyr narrative down our throats instead of debunking it. But because Babbitt and countless thousands like her were white Trump supporters, we’ve been bombarded with agitprop about how every single Jan. 6 protester was engaged

in “riot,” “siege” or “insurrection” and whose “underlying grievance” about election integrity -- to borrow AP’s own simp words for BLM and antifa’s agendas -- is relentlessly framed as a dangerous “conspiracy theory” and “misinformation” instead of a legitimate concern. I remind you that it was the AP that issued “stylebook” guidelines four months after BLM and antifa set America on fire after the George Floyd incident ordering its journalists not to use the term “riot” to describe the mayhem because it “suggests uncontrolled chaos

and pandemonium” instead of focusing on the “underlying grievance” of black protesters against the system. The AP pooh-bahs advised their minions to employ the kinder, gentler euphemism “unrest” to describe “a condition of angry discontent and protest verging on revolt.” I will also remind you that a year ago this week, the AP published a false story that thenPresident Trump had pressed a lead Georgia elections investigator to “find the fraud” and promised he would make the investigator a “national hero.” The AP was forced to acknowl-

edge that a “recording of the call made public two months later revealed that Trump did not say either” and that it had “erroneously reported” the untruth. The retraction came two months after the original lie was manufactured. Conspiracy theories and misinformation, anyone? The power of the AP to deceive, defame and destroy cannot be understated. The organization, more than 170 years old, brags in its ethics statement that “more than half the world’s population sees AP news content on any given day.” Holier than

thou as they commit their evil deeds, these propagandists pledge to report the news “accurately and honestly” while spitting on the graves of patriots. Ashli Babbitt, your sacrifice will not be forgotten. Your honor will be defended.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, January 13, 2022 — STOSSEL from 7 more people would start businesses. “If you have that fallback, it makes you more likely to take a risk.” But at what cost? Already, we see an effect of government’s reckless stimulus handouts: inflation is the highest in 40 years. Yang’s UBI would give away four times that every year. A better Forward Party proposal is automatic tax filing. We waste so much time figuring out our

taxes,” Yang complains. “It’s stupid.” True. In some countries, government just sends you a bill or refund. You can dispute the results, but if you don’t, you can file taxes in less than a minute. The reason the USA does not have automatic filing, says Yang, because “Intuit is making too much money off TurboTax. It lobbied (actually, H&R Block and others lobbied, too) and said, no, no, no! (You) can’t do it auto-

matically!” Yang says other sensible things that Democratic politicians rarely say. During the heat of last year’s anti-police anger, activists screamed at him because he opposed defunding the police. He stood his ground. Yang’s run businesses, so he doesn’t say stupid anti-capitalist things. But often, he acts like a typical politician. At the Democratic National Convention, he gushed

over Biden and Harris. “You’re just sucking up!” I tell him. “I was willing to do or say whatever I thought would help get Trump out,” Yang replies. Why? “Trump was erratic,” says Yang, “not leading in a positive direction.” I’m glad Yang is around, with a new party. More choices are a good thing. Yang is a decent man who brings up some fresh ideas. Unfortunately, many of Yang’s ideas are bad.

He calls climate change an “existential threat.” He wants every gun owner to re-register every five years. He wants to ban assault weapons but can’t define them. He promotes government-funded journalism. But at the end of our interview, we agreed about one thing: “We can see very clearly the way our country is going,” Yang concludes. “We deserve better than this.”
