Sevilla. No podría ser de otra ofrma en una ciudad que tiene tanto para ofrecernos. Incluso en estos meses de altas temperaturas hay motivos para no dejar pasar la oportunidad de visitar este maravilloso destino. Nos aguardan espectaculares veladas con música en directo, teatro, danza y otras disciplinas artísticas en espacios singulares y emblemáticos de la ciudad. También es tiempo de terrazas, que en muchos casos descubren nuevos puntos de vista de nuestros monumentos más insignes. Ahí está, por ejemplo, la terraza de Abades Triana asomándose a la iluminación ornamental de la Torre del Oro y de todo el Paseo de Colón. Por otra parte, Sevilla, que es ciudad de tradiciones, tiene este verano nuevas e ineludibles citas con sus costumbres más arraigadas. La más inmediata, la Velá de Santiago y Santa Ana. Quedándonos en la orilla de Triana, aun con su identidad propia, hay que recordar que el arrabal representa la médula de lo sevillano: cuna del flamenco, de célebres toreros, del tapeo con más solera, de la artesanía cerámica y alfarera. En estos días vive su fiesta grande, pero durante todo el año es digna de ser conocida y disfrutada en sus callejuelas y plazas. Del mismo modo se reproduce en el conjunto de la ciudad. Una ciudad conocida universalmente por sus Fiestas de la Primavera, que es apreciada por su clima otoñal e incluso por sus horas de sol de invierno, y que durante el estío mantiene el flujo de visitantes incorporando a sus reclamos turísticos habituales (monumentos, gastronomía, fiestas, infraestructuras para reuniones...) una agenda cultural y nocturna apta para los viajeros más inquietos. Le deseamos que disfrute de todo ello durante sus días en Sevilla.

La Virgen de los Reyes. Cuenta la leyenda que el rey San Fernando tuvo una visión de la Virgen, prometiéndole la conquista de Sevilla. Al cumplirse la visión, y como agradecimiento, quiso el rey que los mejores escultores produjeran la imagen exacta que se le había aparecido, sin que ninguno lo consiguiera. Unos supuestos artistas alemanes lograrían realizar el encargo real, que por las sorprendentes circunstancias que lo rodearon fue declarado “verdadero y cierto milagro” por el obispo don Remondo. La Virgen de los Reyes. Legend claims that King Fernando saw a vision of the Virgin Mary stating that he would conquer Seville. When this prophecy was fulfilled, the King had his best sculptors attempt to reproduce the exact image of what he had seen to express his gratitude to the Virgin, but no one was able to do so. A German artist managed to depict the image and completed the royal commission. Due to the surprising circumstances of the events surrounding the vision, it was declared “a true miracle” by Bishop Don Remondo.

a Catedral de Sevilla está situada en lo que fue el emplazamiento de la Gran Mezquita, construida en el siglo XII, de la que aún se conserva el alminar, denominado actualmente Giralda por la veleta que lo remata. La conversión de la Mezquita en Catedral tuvo lugar cuando el rey Fernando III de Castilla conquistó Sevilla, en el siglo XIII, sin que apenas se modificara su estructura arquitectónica. Se dice que, cuando en el siglo XV se decidió levantar un nuevo templo, uno de los canónigos sentenció: “Hagamos una iglesia tan grande que los que la vieren acabada nos tengan por locos”. Y, sin duda, no es una exageración pues la Catedral Hispalense es el mayor templo gótico del mundo y el tercero de la Cristiandad, después de San Pedro del Vaticano y San Pedro de Londres. Compuesta por cinco naves, está repleta de exquisitos tesoros artísticos. La Capilla Mayor ocupa un tramo de la nave central, destacando las rejas de hierro y los púlpitos, que datan del siglo XVI. Por su parte, el Retablo Mayor se realizó en distintas fases durante cerca de un siglo, entre los años 1482 y 1564, según las trazas de Pyeter Dancart. Si bien, también intervinieron Pedro Millán, los hermanos Jorge Fernández Alemán y Alejo Fernández, Roque Balduque, Juan Bautista Vázquez el Viejo y Pedro de Heredia. Igualmente destacable es el gran Coro, que ocupa otro tramo de la nave central y cuya sillería se realizó entre los siglos XV y XVI. Siguiendo este recorrido por el interior de la ‘Magna Hispalensis’ llegamos a la Capilla Real. Situada en el muro de la cabecera y realizada por Martín de Gaínza, en el siglo XVI, sustituyó al antiguo ábside gótico. La Virgen de los Reyes, imagen gótica de la segunda mitad del siglo XIII y que perteneció al propio rey San Fernando, es venerada en la hornacina principal del Retablo. Ante su Altar se puede contemplar una urna de plata dorada y cristal, que contiene el cuerpo incorrupto del rey de Castilla. También el arte plateresco encuentra un lugar destacado entre los muros de la Catedral de Sevilla. Buena muestra de ello es la Sacristía Mayor, que comenzó a construir Diego de Riaño y la continuó y finalizó Martín de Gaínza, a mediados del siglo XVI. La capital hispalense, a través de su Catedral, le rinde homenaje también a la figura de Cristóbal Colón. Los restos del navegante genovés descansan en su interior, traídos de la Catedral de la Habana al independizarse de Cuba, como bien puede leerse en los laterales del sepulcro. El conjunto escultórico está compuesto por cuatro heraldos que llevan el féretro a hombros y representan cada uno de los reinos de la Corona Española: Castilla, León, Aragón y Navarra. Acompañando y enriqueciendo este paseo artístico por la Catedral se alza el excepcional conjunto de vidrieras, la mayoría de las cuales se realizaron en el siglo XVI.

he Cathedral of Seville occupies the site of a great mosque built in the late 12th Century and still maintains the bell tower, known as the Giralda, which is a legacy of this Moorish structure. Work on the Christian cathedral began under the reign of King Fernando the III of Castile, conqueror of Seville in the 13th Century, who hardly modified the original architecture. In the 15th Century when the decision was made to build a new temple, the intention was “to make a church that is so huge that those who see it will think we are mad”. This was not an exaggeration as the Seville Cathedral is the largest gothic temple in the world and the third largest Christian cathedral following Saint Peter’s in the Vatican and Saint Paul’s in London. The Cathedral is made up of five naves each filled with exquisite artistic treasures. The main chapel, with its monumental 15th Century forged iron grilles designed by Brother Francisco of Salamanca, takes up the central part of the building. The Main Altarpiece is considered to be one of the greatest in the Christian world. The relief panels designed by Peter Dancart were carved by Spanish and Flemish sculptors between 1482 and 1564. The Spanish sculptors included Pedro Millán, the brothers Jorge Fernández Alemán and Alejo Fernández, Roque Balduque, Juan Bautista Vázquez el Viejo and Pedro de Heredia.

The choir, with seats that were designed in the 15th and 16th Century and which is found in a nave off the Main Chapel, is also remarkable. Continuing along this impressive hall we come to the brilliant interior of the ‘Magna Hispalensis’, the Royal Chapel. Inside the Royal Chapel there is a 16th Century mural by Martín de Gainza which replaced the gothic apse. There is also a gothic effigy of the Virgen de los Reyes (Virgin of the Kings) dating from the second half of the 13th Century which belonged to King Fernando himself and which is the centrepiece of the altar. The gold plated glass urn found in front of the altar contains the remains of this Castilian king. Examples of Plateresque art work can also be found within the walls of the Cathedral of Seville. One example of this style can be seen in the Main Sacristy, which was begun by Diego de Riaño and continued and completed by Martin de Gainza in the mid 16th century. Seville, through its Cathedral, also pays homage to Christopher Columbus. The remains of this

Italian navigator are kept here where they were brought from the Cathedral of Havana when Cuba became independent (as stated in the texts next to the mausoleum). The sculpture found here is made up of four heralds which represent the four Spanish kingdoms (Castilla, Leon, Aragon and Navarra) carrying the casket. Adding to the richness of this artistic visit to the Cathedral are the exceptional stained glass windows, the majority of which were made in the 16th century.

ntiguo alminar de la mezquita musulmana, la Giralda fue en su día la torre más alta del mundo. Hoy, después de las tres añadiduras realizadas tras la Reconquista, la altura total de la torre, ubicada en el ángulo nordeste del Patio de los Naranjos de la Catedral, supera los 97 metros. Varios cuerpos de diversos estilos arquitectónicos componen la estructura de la torre. El musulmán se construyó en 1184 por orden del emperador de Marruecos, Abu Yacub Yusuf, y para sus cimientos se utilizaron piedras de distintos monumentos romanos, algunas de las cuales aún pueden verse a ras del suelo, en la esquina de la calle Placentines. La ingeniería de este antiguo minarete estuvo a cargo de Gever, que en realidad ideó dos torres, una dentro de otra. El hueco que las separa está ocupado por una rampa por la que antiguamente ascendía a caballo el Sultán y que, hoy día, sirve de acceso hasta la terraza superior. Sobre el cuerpo de arquitectura musulmana se añadió, en el siglo XVI, un segundo de campanas, obra de Hernán Ruiz. Por encima de éste aún hay otro más, que tiene en sus esquinas cuatro jarras de azucenas de bronce, recientemente restauradas. Un último cuerpo de arquitectura renacentista completa el conjunto. Denominado de carambolas, lo componen las estrellas, la cúpula y el cupulín, sobre el que, finalmente, se erige la gran veleta de bronce denominada Giraldillo.

Today, following the three additions to the tower made after Seville was conquered, the actual height of this tower found in the north-east corner of the Courtyard of the Orange Trees is 97 metres. A variety of different architectural styles make up the structure of the bell tower. The tower itself was built in 1184 by order of Abu Yacub Yusuf, the emperor of Morocco. The base for the tower was made using stones from various Roman monuments, some of which can still be seen on the corner of Calle Placentines.

Alminar de la antigua mezquita musulmana. Minaret of the former Muslim mosque. The engineer responsible for this ancient minaret, named Gever, effectively built two towers, one inside the other. The space that separates these two towers is a series of ramps instead of stairs which the Sultan used to go up the tower on horseback. Nowadays, these ramps are used as a means of visiting the terrace of the minaret on foot. In the 16th Century a set of bells designed by Hernán Ruiz was added to this Muslim structure. On top of the tower itself there is another structure that has recently been restored, with four bronze Madonna lilies on the corners. The final part of the tower is designed in the Renaissance style. This section consists of a large and a small dome topped off with the impressive wind vane, the Giraldillo.

El Giraldillo. En lo alto de la torre se alza una gigantesca estatua de la Fe, en forma de mujer con vestidura clásica romana, que lleva en una mano un escudo y en la otra, una palma. Al ser una veleta giratoria se denominó giralda tanto a la torre como a la estatua. Actualmente se conoce como Giralda a la torre y Giraldillo a la veleta. El Giraldillo. On top of the bell tower of the Giralda there is a statue portraying Faith in the form of a woman dressed in traditional Roman clothes. She is carrying a shield in one hand and a palm leaf in the other. As this statue is a rotating weather vane both the tower and the statue were named ‘Giralda’ , derived from the Spanish word ‘girar’ meaning ‘turn’. Nowadays, the bell tower is referred to as the Giralda and the wind vane as the Giraldillo.

ntiguo Abd Al Ramán III ordenó en el 913 erigir este palacio fortaleza. El Alcázar está formado por un conjunto de palacios que constituye la muestra más importante de la arquitectura civil sevillana. En su interior destacan los sectores palaciegos, jardines y dependencias de servicio que se distribuyen en un solar amurallado en el borde meridional del Casco Antiguo de Sevilla. El Palacio no configura un conjunto unitario sino intimista, donde se entrelazan elementos artísticos musulmanes con otros góticos, renacentistas y barrocos. Destacada es la aportación de Pedro I, que reconstruyó partes del antiguo alcázar abbadí y otros palacios anteriores.

bd Al Raman ordered the construction of this fortified palace in 931 AD. The Alcazar comprises a series of palaces which are the most important example of civil architecture in Seville. In the interior, the outstanding palace grounds, gardens and servant’s quarters are spread over an area enclosed by walls on the south side of Seville’s Historic City Centre. Rather than an architectural unit, the Alcazar has an intimate atmosphere created by an intermingling of Muslim artistic elements with others from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The most striking contribution by Pedro I was the reconstruction of the older parts of the Abbadi Alcazar and other early palaces.

na de las últimas aportaciones del arte almohade en Sevilla, la Torre del Oro, constituía el último baluarte del lienzo de muralla que arrancaba desde el Alcázar. Muchas leyendas intentan explicar el nombre de la torre, como la de los reflejos del sol en los azulejos que presuntamente la recubrían o la que alude a los cabellos de una dama que el rey don Pedro hubiera encerrado en el edificio. Sin embargo, se la llamaba del Oro por su importancia, igual que existía otra de la Plata. Construida en el primer tercio del siglo XIII, tiene una docena de lados y, desde su basamento de sillería, se echaba una fuerte cadena que cruzaba hasta la otra orilla del río, protegiendo la entrada del puerto. El último cuerpo circular de la torre fue añadido por Sebastián Vander Borcht en 1760. En la actualidad se encuentra en su interior un museo naval con grabados, cartas marinas, maquetas, instrumentos antiguos de marear y documentos históricos. En la torre se traza una imagen de la historia naval de Sevilla, de la importancia del río Guadalquivir y de la huella de numerosos marines ilustres.

ne of the later examples of Almohad art in Seville, the Golden Tower is the last bastion of the fortified wall which began at the Alcazar. There are many legends as to the origin of the tower’s name. Some say it refers to the reflections of the sun on the tiles which supposedly covered it, while others claim it was the golden hair of a damsel which King Pedro locked up in the building. The fact is that it was called the Golden Tower because of its importance in comparison to the nearby Silver Tower. Built at the beginning of the 13th Century, the tower has twelve sides. Large

chains used to be connected from the base of the tower to the other side of the river to guard the entranceway to the port. The highest part of the tower was added by Sebastian Vander Borcht in 1760. Today it is a naval museum with engravings, letters, models, antique navigational instruments and historical documents. The museum also has information regarding Seville’s prestigious naval history, the importance of the Guadalquivir River and the routes of various famous navigators.

Tras la muerte de su esposa entra en una profunda crisis moral y dedica su vida a los pobres, para los que construye el Hospital, que funciona desde 1672 hasta el día de hoy, siendo actualmente una casa de acogida de ancianos sin recursos. DON MIGUEL MAÑARA. The Venerable Servant of God, Miguel Mañara, was born in Seville in 1627. Following the death of his wife he suffered a profound moral crisis and decided to dedicate his life to the poor, building the Hospital which has carried out its functions ever since 1627 and which is currently a shelter for the elderly in need of aid.

En los muros del patio se encuentra un conjunto de paneles de azulejos holandeses, que muestran pasajes de la Biblia. Pero el gran valor artístico se encuentra en el interior de la iglesia. Algunas de las obras de arte que destacan de su interior son las Postrimerías o Jeroglíficos de la Muerte, dramáticas y terribles representaciones de la muerte realizadas por Valdés Leal y el conjunto completo de pinturas de Murillo, representando Obras de Misericordia, seis en total. En el Presbiterio se sitúa el impresionante Retablo Mayor, de intenso barroquismo, realizado por Pedro Roldán, Bernardo Simón de Pineda y Valdés Leal, que plasma la séptima obra de Misericordia: enterrar a los muertos. La visita al monumento sigue con la Sala de Cabildos, estancia del s. XVII donde todavía hoy se reúne la Hermandad, con obras de Zurbarán, Pedro de Camprobín, Valdés Leal, y donde se unen la arquitectura gótica de las Atarazanas con el esplendor del barroco clásico sevillano. Al final, se puede descansar en el bello Patio de los Rosales, jardín enmarcado entre arcos de las Atarazanas, donde están conservadas las rosas que plantó en vida Miguel Mañara. El recorrido puede completarse con la Visita de la Galería Alta (previa cita), donde se encuentra una parte importante de la colección pictórica de la Hermandad, así como estancias privadas como la Biblioteca, Sala Alta de Cabildo o Coro, desde donde se disfruta de una visión única de la Iglesia.

he façade itself is noteworthy, with its elegant lines and outstanding decorative beauty. The interior takes us on a journey into the past, starting with the striking and luminous double courtyard. Here you will find two fountains with sculptures of Mercy and Charity which date from the 17th century. The walls of the courtyard are decorated with a series of Dutch ceramic panels depicting scenes from the Bible. However its greatest artistic wealth is to be found in the interior of the church. Art works which stand out in its interior include the Hieroglyphs of Death, dramatic and terrifying representations of Death painted by Valdés Leal, and a complete a series of six paintings by Murillo which represent the Acts of Mercy. The Presbytery houses the impressive Main Altarpiece. This intensely Baroque work by Pedro Roldán, Bernardo Simón de Pineda y Valdés Leal represents the Seventh Act of Mercy, burial of the dead. The visit continues with the Chapter Hall, which dates from the 17th century and is still used for meetings of the Brotherhood. It is decorated with works by Zurbarán, Pedro de Camprobín and Valdés Leal and combines the Gothic architecture of the Royal Shipyards with the splendour of the classic Seville Baroque style. Finally, rest a while in the beautiful Courtyard of the Rose Bushes, which is framed by the arches of the Royal Shipyards and conserves rose bushes which were planted in the time of Miguel Mañara. Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza MAESTRANZA BULLRING El coso del Baratillo comenzó a construirse en 1761, siguiendo el proyecto de Francisco Sánchez de Aragón, y lo finalizó en 1881 el arquitecto Juan Talavera y de la Vega. Su aspecto externo es de estilo tardo-barroco apuntando ya hacia el clasicismo. En su Museo se exponen fondos relacionados con la propia historia de la Corporación nobiliaria que es propietaria de esta Plaza de Toros: la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, así como numerosos objetos relacionados con la fiesta de los toros. La temporada taurina se inicia el Domingo de Resurrección, continúa con las corridas de la Feria de Abril y el Corpus, y concluye, tras la Feria de San Miguel, con la tradicional corrida del día 12 de octubre. Seville’s Baratillo Bullring started to be constructed in 1761 according to the project by Francisco Sánchez de Aragón and was finished in 1881 by the architect Juan Talavera y de la Vega. Its exterior shows the style of the Late Baroque and early Classicist period. Inside its Museum there are exhibits related to the history of the Noble Order which is the owner of the Bullring: ‘La Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla’, as well as numerous objects associated with the art of bullfighting. Ayuntamiento Hispalense THE TOWN HALL Es considerado uno de los monumentos más extraordinarios de España en su estilo arquitectónico, el renacentista. Su fachada más rica es la que da a la Plaza de San Francisco, elaborada con numerosas puertas y ventanales acompañados de medallones de personajes mitológicos e históricos, mientras que sus pilastras están decoradas con ramos florales y grotescos. De su interior destaca, sobre todo, la Sala Capitular, con un techo formado por una bóveda casi plana compuesta por 35 casetones de piedra, que llevan los retratos de reyes de España anteriores a Felipe II, en relieve. También es notable la escalera de estilo mixto gótico y renacentista, que desde el apeadero sube a la planta alta. Considered to be one of the most extraordinary monuments in Spain in the Renaissance style. Its most striking façade looks onto Plaza San Francisco , with numerous doors and windows decorated with representations of mythological and historical figures, floral bouquets and grotesques. The interior of the building is equally impressive, above all the main hall with its vaulted ceiling made up of 35 stone sections containing portraits in relief of the different Kings of Spain prior to Felipe II. urante 600 años fue iglesia colegial, el segundo templo de Sevilla –tras la Catedral–, y eso explica el virtuosismo arquitectónico, escultórico y pictórico que custodian sus muros. Su fisonomía actual corresponde al proyecto barroco, sustituto de la fallida Colegiata medieval, pero en realidad también es fruto de las etapas romana, visigótica y musulmana que la antecedieron. Para atestiguarlo, ahí está el acceso por la calle Córdoba, donde se conserva el cuerpo bajo de la torre de la Mezquita Mayor de Adabbás, entre otros vestigios. Sus retablos e imágenes sacras, esculturas, pinturas, platería y bordados reúnen autores tan ilustres como Juan de Oviedo, Duque Cornejo, Juan de Mesa o Martínez Montañés. A estas obras de arte y enseres hay que añadir el impresionante órgano barroco, que recuerda la intensa vida musical de la Colegiata.

E Un espacio de reflexión sobre los Derechos Humanos. A space to reflect on human rights

n el popular barrio de Triana, en la mítica Plaza del Altozano, encontramos vestigios de siglos pasados que forman parte de la historia de la ciudad de Sevilla. Muestra de ello es el Castillo de San Jorge, antigua Sede de la Santa Inquisición en España e Icono de esta institución en Europa durante los años comprendidos entre 1481 y 1785. Debido a la historicidad de los hechos acontecidos tras sus muros, el Castillo de San Jorge ha abierto sus puertas al público como espacio temático permanente donde el visitante se adentra en un recorrido expositivo en el que se explica cómo funcionaba la Inquisición y el propio Castillo de San Jorge. Con una superficie de 1.400 metros cuadrados, la exposición se divide en dos plantas. En la planta alta está la Sala Sensorial que, comprendida en tres espacios: el juicio de valor, el abuso de poder y la indefensión de las víctimas, traslada al visitante las mismas sensaciones que experimentaban los procesados por la Inquisición. En la planta baja encontramos diferentes zonas temáticas, como la Barbacana, que contiene datos, imágenes históricas y una maqueta del Castillo del siglo XVIII; la Pasarela Interpretativa permite realizar un recorrido por el yacimiento arqueológico; en el Teatro Multimedia se representa la historia de Marcela, una víctima de la Inquisición y el proceso al que eran sometidos los reos; la Galería de Personajes, situada en el lugar donde antaño estaban las cárceles, rinde homenaje a 14 personajes representativos de la Inquisición; y la última parada, el Muro de la Reflexión, un espacio que recoge ciertos artículos básicos de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos y que lleva al visitante a la reflexión sobre la violación de muchos de ellos.

he legendary Plaza del Altozano in the popular Triana district is the site of vestiges of centuries past which form part of the history of the city of Seville. A good example is the San Jorge Castle, the former headquarters of the Holy Inquisition in Spain and the Icon of this institution in Europe during the years from 1481 to 1785. Due to the historic importance of the events which occurred within its walls, the San Jorge Castle has opened its doors to the public as a permanent thematic museum, where visitors can learn how the Inquisition functioned and also learn more about the Castle itself. With a surface area of 1,400 square metres, the exhibition is divided into two levels. The upper floor is the Sensorial Level which consists of three spaces: The Trial, The Abuse of Power and the Defencelessness of the Victims; which transmit to visitors the selfsame sensations experienced by those charged by the Inquisition. The lower floor also has various different spaces: The Barbican contains data, historic images and a scale model of the Castle in the 18th century, as well as an Informative Walkway which gives you a tour of this archaeological site. The Multimedia Theatre tells the story of Marcela, a victim of the Inquisition and the process which the prisoners were subjected to. Located on the former site of the cells, the Gallery of Key Figures pays tribute to 14 important figures associated with the Inquisition. And the final stop is before the Wall of Reflection, which recalls basic articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and which offers an opportunity for visitors to consider how many of these are violated.

l antiguo convento de la Merced pasó a ser museo de Bellas Artes en 1839. Desde entonces, y debido a la extraordinaria riqueza de sus fondos, se ha convertido en la mejor pinacoteca de España, después del Museo del Prado. La actual entrada es una gran portada que tiene, en la hornacina, una Virgen de la Merced, junto a otros personajes. El vestíbulo de entrada y los claustros muestran una rica y variada colección de azulejos sevillanos. Los fondos del Museo sevillano son herencia del expolio artístico sufrido por la ciudad hispalense en la primera mitad del siglo XIX por agentes extranjeros. La colección actual de pinturas se divide en dos núcleos principales: el del barroco sevillano y las obras correspondientes al romanticismo y al costumbrismo. Además de importantes pinturas de las escuelas sevillanas, valenciana y catalana del siglo XV y la presencia de buenos ejemplos de pintura flamenca, una de las obras maestras del Museo es, sin duda, el retrato de ‘Jorge Manuel’, pintado por su padre, El Greco.

Since then, and thanks to its impressive collection, it has earned the status of one of the most important art collections in Spain after the Prado Museum. The entrance to the museum is a beautiful archway that contains

the image of the Virgin of Mercy alongside other characters in a vaulted niche. The entrance hall and the cloisters contain a rich and varied collection of tiles from Seville. The museum’s collection comprises the works which survived the artistic pillaging by foreign exporters that took place in Seville in the first half of the 19th Century. The current collection of paintings is divided into two sections: Baroque Seville and secondly a section dedicated to romantic and typical images. Apart from works belonging to famous schools of Seville, Valencia and Catalonia in the 15th Century, there is also a collection of Flemish paintings. One of the gems of the museum is undoubtedly the ‘Portrait of Jorge Manuel’ which was painted by his father, El Greco.

l verano en la provincia de Sevilla se llena de duende con los festivales flamencos que se organizan en sus pueblos, veteranas reuniones de lo jondo que motivan veladas espectaculares en lo artístico y en lo gastronómico. El Potaje Gitano de Utrera, el Concurso de Cante Jondo Antonio Mairena, en Mairena del Alcor (3 de septiembre) y el Polvorón Flamenco de Estepa (el 10 de septiembre), son algunas de las citas más significativas tanto en lo musical y coreográfico como en la oferta turística de los municipios que los albergan. Antes, en julio, se produce una destacada concentración de festivales flamencos, como el de Joaquín el de la Paula, en Alcalá de Guadaíra (el 1 y 2 de julio), que lleva el nombre del popular cantaor que creó la ‘soleá alcalareña’, un palo autóctono. En La Puebla de Cazalla se celebra la veterana Reunión de Cante Jondo (9 de julio), concebida por el pintor Francisco Moreno Galván y considerado como uno de los más significativos festivales de Andalucía. El Festival La Yerbabuena de Las Cabezas de San Juan (9 de julio), la emblemática Caracolá Lebrijana (23 de julio), la Fiesta de la Guitarra (en el Palacio Ducal de Marchena, 30 de julio) y el Gazpacho Andaluz de Morón de la Frontera (31 de julio) elevan el nivel del verano flamenco en la provincia de Sevilla, que se convierte en referencia para los aficionados al arte jondo y para el turismo. Un verano en Triana A summer in Triana

riana, el arrabal marinero, el barrio con más solera de Sevilla, la otra orilla, vive su semana grande con la Velá de Santiago y Santa Ana, la festividad de sus patronos (días 25 y 26 de julio). Estos días, los trianeros demuestran que esta es una ciudad que se vive en la calle, en este caso en la calle Betis (G-6), que se puebla de casetas donde se degusta su gastronomía más tradicional: sardinas pasadas a la plancha, pescaíto frito, camarones y bocas en papel de estraza, así como sus características almendras verdes y todo tipo de chucherías en los puestos ambulantes. También hay espectáculos y actividades incluso en el Guadalquivir (como el concurso de la cucaña). Con el reclamo festivo se ofrece la ocasión de conocer otra Sevilla, castiza y popular, la que se encuentra al otro lado del río. Desde la Plaza del Altozano (G-6, donde el Castillo de San Jorge), y a través de sus arterias principales (las calles Castilla, San Jacinto, Pureza), puede imbuirse de los distintivos trianeros: el tapeo, el flamenco, los toros, la artesanía cerámica, alfarera y del hierro. Y, otra vez desde la calle Betis, puede tomarse la estampa más famosa de Sevilla: el Paseo de Colón con las siluetas de la Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, la Torre del Oro, la Giralda. Es Triana un barrio para visitar todo el año, en la solemnidad de su Semana Santa, en el jolgorio romero de El Rocío y en julio durante los llamados Días Señalaítos de Triana, con orígenes en el siglo XIII. Sin duda, un barrio con identidad propia.

During these days, the locals demonstrate that this is a city which is to be enjoyed in the street, in this case in Calle Betis (G-6), which is filled with stalls where you can try some of the most traditional local dishes: grilled sardines, fried fish, prawns and crab’s claws served in greaseproof paper, along with the characteristic green almonds and a whole assortment of sweets in the various stalls. There are also performances and activities which even take place on the Guadalquivir River itself (such as the ‘cucaña’, or greasy pole competition). This festive event gives you the opportunity to discover another side of Seville, the popular and traditional feeling which can be found on the other side of the River. From Plaza del Altozano (G-6, site of the Castle of San Jorge) you can follow its various main streets (named Castilla, San Jacinto and Pureza) to discover the various aspects which give Triana its distinctive character: tapas, flamenco, bullfighting, and ceramic, pottery and iron handicrafts. Returning to

Hasta las 22.15 horas es posible también disfrutar del servicio de bar y a las 22.30 comienza el concierto en el Cenador de la Alcoba. rom 29 June through to 12 September there will be a new edition of the Nights in the Gardens of the Real Alcázar, an activity organised by the Board of the Real Alcázar of Seville which comprises the leading tourism-cultural programme during summer in Seville. Every night, visitors and locals alike have the opportunity to discover the oldest royal palace in Europe from a different viewpoint through evening tours and open-air concerts. The evening begins at 21:00 with a visit to the legendary modern gardens of the Alcázar: the Garden of the Pavilion of Charles V; the Garden of the Cross or Maze Garden; the English Garden or Former Garden of the Bedchamber; the Garden of the Marquis of Vega Inclán and the Garden of the Poets; all of which are truly extraordinary. Until 22:15 you can also take advantage of the bar service and at 22:30 the concert begins in the Pavilion of Charles V. The 45 groups and 75 concerts scheduled are based around the historical-musical periods of the palatial complex itself, including medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music and classical music (classicism, romanticism and nationalism), as well as other styles: jazz and blues, flamenco, world music, and so on. Surrounded by the delicate vegetation of the palace gardens and under the starry night sky of Seville, visitors can experience not only the Seville of the 21st century, but can also travel back in time to the Seville of Pedro I the Cruel, the Catholic Monarchs and the Discovery of America, or the time of the Count Duke of Olivares and the Dukes of Montpensier. The long summer nights are a classic feature of this city devoted to outdoor living, whether in the Real Alcázar, the Buhaira Gardens, the Cartuja Monastery or the different streets, squares and museums.
