And just like that, this is the last Welcome Home Winter Texan of the season! It has been a wonderful winter, and we have enjoyed sharing it with you!
alentine’s Day is right around the corner, and I’m reminded of the days in elementary school when I’d come home with a box full of cards, notes, and, of course, CANDY! I’d spend hours looking at the cards and figuring out who my admirers were--through the handmade cards.
Fast forward 40-plus years, and I admit I’m not much of a romantic. I’m pretty practical when it comes to gifts, both giving and receiving. It’s not so much that I don’t enjoy gift-giving. It’s just that I’d much rather spend money on experiences. My family is finally on board, and we have all decided to spend our money on travel this year instead of gifts for every holiday.
I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.
If you feel you must go, I’d like to invite you to help us spread the word about South Texas to everyone you meet along the way and those you see every day back home. Invite them to join you next season! We would love to have them join us. The more the merrier!
And we chose a romantic destination…Italy!
Valentine’s Day is a special day, and whether you are spending it with your sweetheart or you’re flying solo, know that you are loved!
This September, we will host our second, not so annual (thanks to the pandemic), Winter Texan Reunion Tour, so we’d also like to invite you to join us at one of our stops. Stay tuned as we announce our travel plans.

It has been a real pleasure to serve you this year. We will work throughout the summer months on all of our programming so next season will be even better than this one!

forward from the loss, Karla trusted God. “I really had a lot of faith. I thought, if I’m going to be a widow, then I’ll honor God by being the best one I can be.”
She planted flowers, took up horseback riding--a lifelong dream--and provided care for seniors in their homes. After two years, she began thinking it would be nice to have someone to talk to.
Karla turned to God and prayed for two things: someone who loved Him with all his heart and who was really hurting. “I had been through it and wanted to help,” she says.
Meanwhile, Larrie was in pain. Suffering from the loss of his wife of 20 years, he was immersed in grief and loneliness. “I couldn’t deal with the pain of losing my wife and being on my own.”
Larrie began saying his own prayers. “I don’t know where she is or who she is; you’re going to have to bring her to me.” Then, he says, someone popped up.
He received notification that his dating profile had been favorited and received a “wink.”
“And that was me,” says Karla.
Initially, they spoke for hours on the phone. It was an instant connection. Their first in-person

meeting began the morning of February 15, 2017, and lasted eleven hours. Karla knew that night Larrie was the one she had prayed
for, and the feeling was mutual, Larrie was smitten.
Their first official date was a 200-mile motorcycle ride on Larrie’s Goldwing trike. By June, they were married.
The first two years they traveled, visiting the Bahamas and Puerto
Rico and cruising the country by motorcycle.
Then the couple set their sights on the Rio Grande Valley. After a quick Google search on “snowbirds” (they weren’t familiar with the term “Winter Texan”), they found Bit-OHeaven RV Resort in Donna.
They initially visited for six weeks. “It was a blur--loved every minute of it,” says Karla. The next year they came for six months; they had a ball. When it came time to go back to Illinois, they didn’t want to leave because, Karla says, “This is a perpetual vacation!”
Now they’re proud “Converted Texans.” They attend dances six days a week, Karla sporting her signature cowgirl hat, Larrie in a Western shirt. Sundays are for church, lunch with friends, and naps.
It was really a God factor,” Karla says. She felt directed right to Larrie. While they both reflect fondly on the time spent with their previous spouses, the Wiggands express the importance of letting go and embracing the new.
Karla has discovered cooking, while Larrie enjoys socializing with the neighbors. She loves his joyful spirit, and he appreciates how she puts him first and how equally important they are to each other.
And, of course, they love to dance. When the Wiggands take to the dance floor, entertainers who know them will make a point to play Tracy Byrd’s “Keeper of the Stars.” It’s their song and speaks to their story: It was no accident, me finding you. Someone had a hand in it. Long before we ever knew. •

Alamo Fire and Police Personnel Race at Winter Ranch
It wasn't a fire, accident, or crime that brought the Alamo Fire and Police departments to Winter Ranch RV Resort Saturday, January 28. But once there, they set the remotecontrol racetrack on fire with their fast racing, causing more than one accident.
At the invitation of Winter Gardens Raceway R/C Car Group, the Alamo Fire and Police personnel came to Winter Gardens Raceway for a challenge between the two departments, using remote-control cars provided by Winter Ranch residents and New Sun Racing.
Prior to the start of the race, drivers and spectators enjoyed delicious hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings, chips, drinks, and a cookie. After preliminary instructions and practice, the singing of the National Anthem, and a prayer by Chaplain Dennis Key, police and fire personnel raced remotecontrol cars against each other, much to the delight of the capacity crowd gathered in the stands and on the golfcart terrace to enjoy the race.
With Mike Mulbrook as track announcer, there were races between the police chief and police officers, the fire chief and firefighters, and firefighters and police officers. Some of the audience even tried racing for the first time.
Alamo Police Chief Rick Ozuna commented the day was “awesome” and the track was like a “mini race track with guardrails and spectator seating.” All agreed the event was a huge success.
Winter Gardens remote-control race track, built by residents of Winter Ranch and Trophy Gardens, is a 1/10-scale model of NASCAR’s Kansas Speedway, with 11-degree
banking on the three corners. The track is 15 feet wide and a total of 135 feet in length, with guardrails and a 70-foot straightaway. The race cars are 1/10-scale electric cars with transponders that tie into the track’s computer lapcounter system. The track complex includes a race car pit area, driver and spectator stands, a golf cart spectator area, and a concession stand.
The Alamo Police and Fire departments originally expressed interest in racing last summer when they came to Winter Ranch to present a Hurricane and Severe Weather Survival session. The chiefs mentioned they routinely hold challenge events between the two departments in other sports and asked if they could hold an RC-car challenge.
Alamo Police Department personnel competing included Chief Richard Ozuna, Adrian Rodriquez, Brandon Tovar, and Jesse Maldonado. Alamo Fire Department drivers included Chief Roy Contreras, Luis Alonzo, Damian Vasquez, Isaac Rendon, Michael Valdez, Gabriel Leal, and Lee Valdez.
Many thanks go to the Winter Ranch residents who provided race cars, helped with race setup, taught police and fire personnel how to operate the race cars, provided food, and operated the concession stand. •

Heritage and History Day Returns to MOSTHistory
The Museum of South Texas History presents Heritage and History Day, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, February 11.
This community event highlights the culture of South Texas peoples through regional folkway demonstrations, ranging from hands-on activities to live performances.
Museum staff will host several hands-on activities, such as embroidery, using yarn and plastic needlepoints. Another activity includes a role-playing voting booth that assigns participants with a character card, determining whether they can or cannot vote. Attendees are welcome to watch or participate in butter churning, an essential chore practiced when modern equipment was not available. Other living history demonstrations include knitting, leather crafts, rope making, and roping.
Regional organizations and museums will provide fun historical facts about Rio Grande Valley cities, such as Weslaco, Alamo, and Brownsville. The Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park, The Weslaco Museum, the Brownsville Historical Association, Alamo Museum, the South Texas Historical Association,
and Bentsen State Park will provide opportunities to learn more about their organizations and respective cities.
Music and dance are important to the foundation of cultures, so grab a seat and enjoy live performances by Las Palmas Folklórico and Edinburg North High School Mariachi Oro. The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas will share the history of its people through song and dance on the performing stage, as well.
Attendees can purchase a memento at the Museum Store, where a variety of items, such as heritage cookbooks, handmade silver jewelry, and Cappadona Ranch mesquite products, are available for purchase. On site at the museum, the Iba Sisters Handmade will set up shop and sell South-Texas-inspired jewelry and trinkets.
Take a break from the fun activities and performances with a handcrafted
beverage from Grind Coffee and pair it with cookies sold by a Girl Scouts troop. Holy Snow Food Truck and E&B Elotes may be the choices for your rumbling tummy. An ATM will be available on site.
Bring the whole family to enjoy a day at the Museum of South Texas History Saturday, February 11. Visit mosthistory.org/events for the latest updates on Heritage and History Day.
The museum’s signature Rio Grande Legacy Exhibition and spotlight exhibits, Furniture that Built the Valley and Al Ramirez’s 100th Birthday, are included in the regular special event fees. FRIENDs of MOSTHistory enjoy free admission to Heritage and History Day and exhibits.

Kansas Day Celebration 2023 – Another Great Success
Submitted by Larry Schmitt
J
anuary 25, 184 Kansans from all over the Rio Grande Valley met to commemorate the anniversary of the state’s January 29, 1861, admission to the Union. Considering we met at a new venue and the road construction in the Pharr and Mission areas is extensive, the organizers were very happy with this total attendance. What was super special is that 38 Kansans joined us for their first time. Yea!
This year’s event took place at Balli’s Social Event Center - Krysta’s Room in Mission. The organizers much appreciated that all tables and chairs were set up by the hosts. The tables were decorated according to the organizers’ preference.
A great lunch was prepared and served by Balli’s Catering of Mission. Entertainment was provided by Rusty Rierson, homegrown entertainer from Augusta, Kansas. We heard many positive comments about the speed
of delivery, the taste of the food, and the entertainer!
Jan Bergman, chair of the event, and Larry Schmitt, communications and reservations, facilitated the day’s events. The organizers also thank all of the volunteers who facilitated registration, collected monies, and distributed the prizes. Jan works hard throughout the year to accumulate door and raffle prizes. We are also thankful to some of the attendees for bringing items for the raffle. Many took great prizes home, including the writer of this message.
Plans for the 2024 celebration are in progress. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, January 24, 2024. The venue has not yet been determined. Our current plans include the delicious food from Balli’s Catering and entertainment by Rusty. RSVP will be required. If Larry has your contact information, great. If not, please email your information to him at Larrys13@icloud.com. •

Perspectives Nathaniel’s Story
by Paula Key
A s chaplains at Winter Ranch RV Resort, we check up on residents to see how everyone is doing. What concerns them, concerns us, and more importantly, concerns God. As we learned of one couple’s grandson, Nathaniel, who broke his neck in July diving into a pond in Iowa, we were amazed at the tenacity of this teenager and the miracles of God being done as he persevered.
Nathaniel has gone from being paralyzed from the waist down with minimal movement in his arms and hands to now being able to sit up, turn over, feed himself, master a manual wheelchair, walk with a walker, swim on his own, and go back to school a few half-days a week--in just five months. Physical therapy is ongoing and not for the weak of heart. God has blessed Nathaniel’s efforts and his faith in God to the point that the doctors are even saying he shouldn’t be able to do these things and that it is a miracle.
Before the diving accident,
Paula Key is the wife of Chaplain Dennis Key at Winter Ranch RV Resort in Alamo. They are with Christian Resort Ministries, which provides non-denominational worship services in RV resorts throughout the RGV. You can contact the Keys for their service times at offdkey@yahoo.com or contact Christian Resort Ministries at crmintl.org for opportunities to serve in your community.
Nathaniel was heavily involved with competition in swimming, archery, cross country, and golf and was also in the marching and concert bands. Besides all of that, he is an avid fisherman and turkey and deer hunter. He is looking forward to competing in his high school Para Swimming Division this winter. While Nathaniel is building up his strength and coordination through continuing physical therapy and trust in God, it is impossible for him to go anywhere outside. He needs a special type of wheelchair to maneuver the uneven grass and
Spaghetti Dinner Tradition Continues at La Floresta
by Arleen Bier, La Floresta Park
After 10 years of serving a spaghetti dinner to the residents of La Floresta Park in Mercedes, Jean and Rodger Vanderville (Manistique, Michigan) decided to call it quits. Through the years, they have served between 75 to 115 dinners each time, with the help of a crew of seven. Good food, fun, and laughter were also on the menu.
Jean and Rodger are involved in a variety of events at La Floresta and focus their time and attention on golf and other activities. Meanwhile, Darla Strait (Sanborn, Iowa), Debbie Tufnell (also from Manistique), and Bonnie Kadell (Jerseyville, Illinois) have offered to take over the spaghetti dinner next year.

Things I Have Learned
A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
by Bill Ward
The Garbage Man
Today’s Wisdom: When I see garbage trucks, I do not take them personally. I wave, I smile, I wish them luck, and I move on. ~ David Piley
I was recently sitting in the pew at church and noted my wife opening a wrapper on a cough drop. She then crumpled up the wrapper and nonchalantly dropped it in my shirt pocket. I, quietly in my own mind because I’m not stupid, asked, “Am I your garbage dump now?”
The answer in my mind--which surprised me but maybe shouldn’t have because I was sitting in church-was, “Yes.” In a way, that is what I promised to be some 49 years ago when we started our journey through life together.
I am used to being the garbage dump. It is me who picks up the dead mice in the traps. It is me who kills the big spiders in our house. It was me who picked up the dog poop in the yard before she departed, rest her soul. It is
also my job to take out the actual garbage. But those are all real garbage things. I’m talking about something different here.
We all have our baggage in life, that stuff that is the less attractive side of us. It is the bad hair days, the sour moods, the impatience, the
The Happy Place
Early in the morning, things can seem a little quiet. Birds are chirping, and there’s a small breeze in our back yard, a perfect spot for a cup of tea and a little yarn. The chairs all look inviting, so please pull a Goldilocks and find the one that’s just right for you. Settle in and sip your tea and watch as a few butterflies enjoy the morning blooms. Our Happy Place is waiting to begin the day with you.
Then, the day adds a few more friends to those empty chairs. Some old friends, some you will meet today, but always, friends knit together. Laughter is added to the birds’ chirping, as more yarn friends flit in and out, just like the butterflies. If it’s Wednesday, then it’s almost time for our friend, Barbara, to stop by with a bag of her homemade cookies. Yummalicious! And we all know that’s just the thing to keep us going through the week!
The shadows sift through the big old oak tree, as those acorns begin to fall in the breeze. That’s how we know our South Texas “winter” has begun--so sit close to that umbrella. You’ll share stories of kids and grandkids, your “one-pot” recipes and directions to your favorite Mexican restaurant. Guess what?! You’ve found our Happy Place!
At The Lamb’s Loom, we have a saying around here: “More than a yarn shop, we’re a ministry and a mindset.” We’re about knitting together a community that loves and laughs, all the while putting service into action. Sometimes quiet and peaceful, and other days you’ll laugh until you cry. And you’ll never believe how quickly the time flies around here. But no worries, your chair will be ready and waiting for you tomorrow, and we will put the kettle on!
For the rest of the year, when y’all are way up north somewhere, you can join us on our website at thelambsloom. com and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And, of course, we have lots of fun articles right here in Welcome Home Winter Texan
The Lamb’s Loom is located at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue.
We truly appreciate all of our PEGs! You can be a PEG, too! Pray. Encourage. Give. Remember, The Lamb’s Loom is not just a yarn shop; it’s a ministry and a mindset. •
unmet expectations, and all of the garbage we carry with us, sometimes discretely but often openly. We can’t hold it in forever, so sometimes we have to express it, share it, throw it, scream at it, or whatever. My job, the one I promised in the “for better or for worse”

commitment, is to take it from her as best I can and make life better. It isn’t always easy, and sometimes it can be impossible.
Some of us are good at relieving others of their garbage and dealing with it effectively. However, too often, people want to just throw it back at someone. When I was in police work, we saw a lot of garbage throwing. Some even stuck on us. Perhaps less common is the attitude expressed in the quotation above-basically, “Meh!” That can be healthy.
But the real challenge comes when we actually care about the person holding the garbage. It takes someone special to say, “Give that to me. I’ll help get rid of it.”
I’m just sayin’. •

1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Sandy Shares a Popular Recipe from Texas
1015 Onion Casserole
By Sandy Olson
South Texas loves the 1015 sweet onion! After all, it was conceived right here in the RGV and is enjoyed all over the state. It’s said the name comes from the fact that the onions are planted October 15 of each year for the spring harvest. They can be huge, are mild and sweet, and can be used both raw and cooked in so many ways.
4 medium sweet onions
¾ cup milk, not skim
½ cup real butter (no margarine, please)
2 large eggs, beaten
15 round buttery crackers, crushed
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar
1 can cream of mushroom soup
Salt and pepper to taste
Peel the onions and slice into ¼ -inch rings. Melt the butter in a heavy skillet and sauté the onions until clear but not browned. Reserve 3 tablespoons of the cracker crumbs and set aside. Place the rest of the crumbs in the bottom of a buttered 2-quart casserole dish. Remove the onions from the skillet with a slotted spoon. Mix the
mushroom soup with ¼ cup of the milk, combining until smooth.
Put ½ the onions into the casserole and top with ½ of the soup mixture. Repeat to make a second layer.
In a small bowl, combine the eggs with the remaining milk, mixing well. Pour this over the onions. Spread the shredded cheese evenly on top and finish with the reserved crumbs, sprinkling evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Add salt and pepper, as desired. This is a good side dish with grilled meat or chicken.
