Dear visitors! The city of Pilsen, the heart of our region, is the European Capital of Culture 2015. Such an event is very rare, and the Pilsen Region will not miss it. We are like a family where younger siblings adore their oldest sister. Pilsen is the largest city in the region – it is significantly bigger than all others. At the same time, it never was a selfish sister who would dispute the right of its younger siblings for significance and beauty. The Pilsen Region is endowed with a beautiful and well-preserved countryside, which the human spirit decorated with gemstones of monumental monasteries, as well as pebbles of wayside shrines in the fields. It is covered with both small and large baroque pearls that will become alive in 2015 with unusual activities and attractive cultural programs. The “9 Weeks of Baroque” project invites to visit often omitted and closed locations. It will have a specific program for each day of the week: Mondays are for the countryside, Tuesdays are dedicated to landmarks, Wednesdays to the rural and regional culinary arts, Thursdays are for museums and galleries, and Fridays and Saturdays are for the main program in the most significant landmarks of each location, while Sundays are for the spirit.
premiere of Constanza e Fortezza, a baroque coronation opera in the Windischgrätz Riding Hall, in Sve ˇtce, near Tachov, on a wooden stage, a replica of the Florea Theatrum. The Windischgrätz Riding Hall is the second largest in Central Europe, after the Spanish Courtyard Riding Hall in Vienna. The opera was staged just once and has waited almost 300 years for its reprise.
In this occasion, the region presents itself as one of miraculous locations, springs, Madonnas, pilgrimage trails and saints, deserted and vanished churches and villages, and of breweries and beer. This is the background used by the organisers of the “9 Weeks of Baroque” festival, the flagship of the Pilsen – the European Capital of Culture 2015 project, with unique baroque landmarks becoming alive in the summer with baroque music, theatre, fireworks, and culinary art.
The “9 Weeks of Baroque” festival will be symbolically closed with the traditional pilgrimage to the Angel Guardian chapel in Sušice. In 2015, Europe doesn’t have just a capital city of culture – it has an entire capital region of culture, too. We are looking forward to your visit.

THE CITY OF PRAGUE The City of Prague MuseumMUSEUM invites you to visit:
LANGWEIL’S MODEL OF PRAGUE from 1826–1837, is a unique, and the most attractive, exhibit in the City of Prague Museum. It is a unique document of the likeness of the Old Town, Lasser Town and the Prague Castle before the redevelopment of Prague at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It was hand-made of cardboard for 11 years by an employee of the Prague University Library, Antonín Langweil (1791–1837), who dedicated to his unusual hobby all his leisure time and financial resources. He died unrecognized, in poverty. It is now that we are able to appreciate the significance of the model, as both an excellent document, and an unusual piece of artwork. On around 20 square meters, the historical center of Prague is depicted in the shape it had some 180 years ago. More than 2,000 colored buildings are made in a scale of 1:480, with all details. For many buildings that no longer exist Langweil’s model is the only evidence of their likeness. A demanding and unique project of digitization of the model was finished in February 2009, so Prague is the only city in the world that offers a 3D virtual model of the city to such extent and detail. The digitization also makes it possible to visit a 3D cinema projection during which you can see historical Prague at the beginning of the 19th century. Reservations at: Tel.: +420 221 709 674, e-mail: 3Dkino@muzeumprahy.cz Open: Tue–Sun 9 a.m.–6 p.m., every last Wednesday of the month 9 a.m.–8 p.m. www.muzeumprahy.cz CTĚNICE CHATEAU COMPLEX is an ideal destination for those who have been longing to leave the famous landmarks in the busy center of Prague, and prefer the quiet of the country. In half an hour by subway and bus, you can stroll through a beautiful park surrounding a chateau, reconstructed in its contemporary likeness in 2008. This former medieval Gothic stronghold has over the centuries changed owners, and shape – from Renaissance, through baroque, to classicist. The chateau has a set of farm buildings: a sheepcote, a granary, a catchpole’s house, and a riding hall. The complex houses a riding association, that offers horseback rides in the riding hall and in the vicinity of the chateau. The chateau garden nursery, whose history dates back to the 16th century, presents the traditional gardening trade in a unique historical environment. Flower lovers can admire the garden, which boasts a unique collection of perennials. Inside the chateau you can find preserved fragments of Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque murals. Imperial Stables at Prague Castle 17 April – 28 June 2015 In April, almost 2000 of the most precious items from Grand Moravia, from archaeological findings in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Austria, move from Brno to the Imperial Stables at the Prague Castle. The event is part of the travelling exhibition “Grand Moravia and the Beginnings of Christianity”, organised by the Archaeological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Brno and the Moravian Regional Museum, who is lending its most precious findings to be exhibited for the very first time ever.

presents more distant findings of Grand-Moravian nature (from Cottbus, and findings from princely graves in Stará Kouřim) that vouch for the significance and impact of Grand Moravia within the broader Central-European context. Several sets are worth the attention, such as the famous finding of silver vessels and jewels, often marked as a treasure of a Byzantine tradesman, the princely double-grave in Kolín, the jewels from the funeral paraphernalia of the duchesse of Želénky, and personal items from the rich grave provision of a duchesse of Stará Kouřim.
Grand Moravia was the first known WestSlavonic state – the mightiest and most powerful in Central Europe at the time. It spread mostly in the area of today’s Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary between 833 and 906/907 A. D. Most of the exhibits consist of jewels of precious metals from the most significant centres of Grand Moravia: Mikulčice, the Staré Město – Uherské Hradiště agglomeration, Břeclav – Pohansko, Olomouc, and Bojná. KOKOSCHKA AND PRAGUE
National Gallery in Prague Veletržní Palace, 1st floor, left wing 20 February – 28 June 2015 against war. The exhibition intends to highlight all such moments of the artist’s life and work in respect to Kokoschka’s activity in culture, his position on the Czech artistic scene, and above all, his role among the anti fascistic émigrés in Czechoslovakia, which has never been presented in such extent. Activities of the Oskar-Kokoschka-Bund group will be mentioned at the exhibition for the first time ever, as well as the context with the Czech theatrical avantgarde scene, such as the Osvobozené divadlo (Liberated Theater) of Voskovec and Werich, or the Oskar Kokoschka: View of the Charles Bridge (Prague) E. F. Burian Theater. Written, archive, and photographic documents matter of factly accompany the presentation of the relation of Oskar Kokoschka to the Czech cultural environment.
The history of modern arts is unthinkable without Austrian painter Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980), one of the most significant expressionists. It is well known that he spent part of his life in Prague. His family came from Bohemia, his father settled in Austria. However, part of the family stayed in Bohemia. The painter felt well and at home there. It was not just pure coincidence that he painted the most beautiful expressionistic panoramas of Prague.
The exhibition presents selected works by Oskar Kokoschka from both Czech and foreign institutions, created between 1934 and 1938 in Czechoslovakia. It will be supplemented with contexts highlighting Kokoschka’s influence on the Czech environment, and the inspiration he found there for himself. Other presented artists include Friederich Feigl, Bohdan Heřmanský, Willy Nowak, Karel Vogel, Wincenc Makovský, Emil Filla, František Janoušek, Josef Čapek, and Czechoslovak émigrés John Heartfield and Johannes Wüsten.
The Oskar Kokoschka and Prague exhibition focuses on a short period, from 1934 to 1938, when Kokoschka lived in Czechoslovakia. There, he created some 30 oil paintings, including 16 views of Prague. A representative part of these works will be presented at the exhibition in the context of the Czech visual arts, noting the artist’s cooperation with the Dr. Hugo Feigl’s Gallery, and with the Mánes creative artistics society. An exceptional portrait of the first President of Czechoslovakia, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, borrowed from the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburg, will be confronted with the president’s more official images. Oskar Kokoschka was inspired by the Czech cultural scene as much as he inspired it back. He became an iconic personality of peaceful fight against demagogic systems, and generally

For over fifty years, Stanislav Kolíbal (b. 1925) has been one of the most prominent figures of Czech and European art. regards drawing as a definitive work of art, while drawings, in his mind, also generate a shift in concept or a major turning point in the artist’s creative output, presenting – in concentrated form – his approach to a particular theme and its development. The exhibition opens with his White Drawings produced between 1968–1976, where he contemplates time and temporality, while his Illusion and Fiction series dating from 1977–1979 thematizes illusion in space. His Berlin Cycle from 1988 introduced his diversified work involving geometry, whose purpose is to seek order, concordance and interrelations. This series led to further drawing cycles, watercolours and reliefs that served the artist as a point of departure for objects arranged in space and exhibition installations. The exhibition will also examine this context of rendering drawings in the third dimension, exemplifying them by significant artworks that have either never been exhibited in the Czech Republic before, or only minimally. The exhibition is also intended to stimulate a theoretical discussion on the nature of Kolíbal’s art in the context of the international art movement, and to seek both concordances and differences with regard to the established art-historical context. Jubilant Janáček May International Music Festival World musicians and music ensembles performing in unique historical and industrial landmarks Ostrava – Opava – Hlučín – Ludgeřovice – Hradec nad Moravicí – Kravaře – Krnov – Havířov 24 May – 8 June 2015 Janáček May is one of the most prestigious music festivals in the Czech Republic. It is a cross point of various styles of both worldfamous and less-known classical music composers, from the Renaissance to the present, and an overview of other genres, such as jazz and music-theatrical art. For this festival, 2015 is exceptionally special. Ostrava, the capital of the region, commemorates the 65th anniversary of its first music festival. The very first concert took place in May 1950. At the same time, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Janáček May International Music Festival that carries on the tradition, and continues in its development. The jubilant festival program in 2015 includes guest performances of world stars, and leading European symphonic and chamber orchestras, such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liverpool with pianist Paul Lewis (4 June), the Amsterdam Sinfonietta with pianist Rafał Blechacz, the winner of the Chopin competition in Warsaw (6 June), and performances of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jiří Bělohlávek (8 June), and other Czech sym-
phonic orchestras. Janáček May 2015 also features soloists, choirs, and orchestras from Poland, Germany, Holland, France, Great Britain, Russia, and the Czech Republic. The program also includes a special project – the Day of Silesian Organs with four consequent concerts, in four churches, on one day in Hlučín, Ludgeřovice, and Ostrava (31 May). The festival is accompanied by numerous events whose significance goes beyond the boundaries of the city, the region, and the Czech Republic, such a conference of the European Festivals Association. One of the great advantages of Janáček May is its location outsite great musical centers, which makes it possible to offer affordable prices for tickets and accommodation, and concerts in inglorious and non-conventional locations. The Janáček May festival’s background dwells in the Moravian-Silesian Region in the historical lands of Moravia and Silesia, at the crossroads of three countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. This region is the birthplace (1854) of the world-famous composer Leoš Janáček, and an area of interesting locations full of contrasts of beautiful countryside and historical and unique industrial landmarks.

Premières on 5 and 6 March, 2015 State Opera Prague Symphony No. 1 in D-major Music: Gustav Mahler Reflections on the Fate of Human Forms Music: 48nord (Ulrich Müller and Siegfried Rössert) Symphony No. 7 in A-major Music: Ludwig van Beethoven An evening of ballet composed of prominent European choreographers of the younger generation. Uwe Scholds – an excellent German choreographer with a pure ballet handwriting, nicknamed the “European Blanchine”, who worked until his untimely death in Liepzig. His choreography has become an integral part of the repertoire of all leading “houses” of ballet, thanks to a particularly sophisticated technique of innovation that is typical and unmistakable in its abstractly conceived choreographic works.
Petr Zuska – a renown Czech choreographer and artistic director of the National Theatre Ballet. He created this piece for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. The choreography is a pure visualisation of the music of Gustav Mahler and his famous Symphony No. 1 in D-major, which is ingeniously built with a vocabulary of neoclassical movement, characterised by the constant fluidity of the movement of the dancers and the endless flow of bodies that drift in the same direction of the music. Zuska’s choreography adds an endlessly variable tone that superimposes dramatic tension.
Jacop Godani – a successful Italian choreographer, representative of the young generation of contemporary artists, who has created a completely new and original choreography for the Ballet Ensemble of the National Theatre.
Hänsel und Gretel
Engelbert Humperdinck Premiered on 23 and 24 April 2015 National Theatre Stage director: Matěj Forman The opera, inspired by the Grimm brothers’ popular fairytale, is the work of German composer Engelbert Humperdinck and his sister Adelheid Wette, who wrote the libretto. Premiered in Weimar on 23 December 1893, conducted by Richard Strauss, it was an immediate success, with its popularity growing rapidly, and soon became a hit beyond Germany. In 1905 the piece was staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The National Theatre production of Hänsel und Gretel will be directed by Matěj Forman, the son of well-known movie director Miloš Forman, primarily known to Prague audiences as the designer of magical sets for the highly acclaimed productions he has created in recent years for the National Theatre Opera together with his brother Petr.
that we could apply our experience with itinerant theatre. We imagined how the opera travelled with a troupe far beyond the gates of renowned towns, on dusty paths to the greens and backyards of small villages, and how it brought joy to audiences ranging from children to grannies, revealing to them the charm of the fairy tale. At the State Opera, we would like to try to afford Humperdinck’s opera the magic of a fairy tale performance, blending sublime music with stunts of acrobats, puppeteers and actors, thereby bringing pleasure to adult theatregoers, opera connoisseurs, as well as those coming to see an opera for the very first time.“
Matěj Forman says of the production’s preparations: “When the creative team began devoting to Hänsel und Gretel, we found out

In his work, Milan Grygar addresses the mutual relationship between image, sound and space. It’s an original concept, unique to contemporary art, that belongs more to the opinion-circuits of European and American art, rather than to the local scene. This retrospective exhibition presents the works of Milan Grygar (born 1926) from the mid 1960s, when he first connected his art with the phenomenon of the spatiality of sound, to the present, where his individual concept of visual-acoustic forms is taking a new shape. The National Gallery’s Collection of 19th-Century Art is opening a new exhibition of 19thcentury art in the newly-reconstructed Salm Palace on Hradčanské Square. The exhibition will present the most important examples of Czech painting and sculpture in the period from neoclassicism to romanticism within their wider Central-European context. Czech art formed an inseparable part of the CentralEuropean artistic sphere, and its points of departure, criteria and evaluation were closely connected with both the art scene and the institutions in Vienna and the artistic centres in Germany. The displayed artworks, complemented by representative pieces on loan from important institutions and private collections, are arranged into several parts, each focusing on a particular style, theme or artist. The character of the presented collections and the works’ small formats create a harmonious whole with the historical furnishing in the interiors of the sensitively restored neoclassicist palace.

KAMPA Jiří Hilmar:MUSEUM Adagio 14 February – 17 May 2015
The Kampa Museum opens the 2015 exhibition program with a retrospective of works of sculptor, painter, and graphic artist Jiří Hilmar, a significant representative of Czech geometric abstraction and op-art. The basis of the exhibition in the Kampa Museum are kinetic objects and paper reliefs from the 1960s, and mono-chromatic reliefs of multicoated scrap paper from the 1970s.

In fact, the above-mentioned paper reliefs are based on optical effects. During the 1970s, together with paper and cardboard, Jiří Hilmar also started using other materials like string, fabric and wood. A static work that can be put in motion by the wind of a passing-by person hides a latent motion. At the same time, the artist created works based on levelling scrap paper, fixed on canvas and board.

From the mid-1970s, Hilmar focused more intensively on the theme of nature being endangered by technical civilisation. The direct confrontation with the devastated countryside in the centre of the industrial landscape along the river Ruhr, where Hilmar moved in 1974, and the immaculate countryside around Inning am Ammersee near Munich, convinced the artist about the importance of a balance Jiří Hilmar, Untitled, 1976, paper, wood, private collection between humans and nature and the need to resJiří Hilmar’s work is the space perceived not tore its disrupted unity and harmony. SWETT CHOCOLATE FAIRY Sweet moments with a chocolate fairy
In 2008, the company Viva Praha – The Finest Belgian Chocolate opened a retail store with the best Belgian chocolate in the very center of Prague, just a few steps from the Old Town Square, in Celetná. The store specializes in Belgian chocolate, hand-made by the best chocolatiers from the chocolate capital, Bruges, in Belgium. The freshness of chocolate plays a great role, and that is why at the Viva store you can find only the best products imported directly from artisan producers. Together with classical chocolate products, such as pralines, figures, and bars, at the Viva store you can also buy novelties of the chocolate world, for example chocolate with high content of antioxidants, organic chocolate, and pralines with unusual flavors and combinations. Those who do not like chocolate can enjoy nougat, marzipan, or homemade fudge. Right at the store, while sitting over a cup of coffee in the Jungle bar, you can enjoy cakes, original Belgian wafers, fresh fruits dipped in chocolate, and the original hot chocolate that boasts several awards. The selection is now also supplemented with a section of Belgian beer specialties. Besides chocolate, the store produces the so-called “Rock Candy”. The store has tables prepared for the manufacture of this treat, so you can see the process, which dates back more than 400 years. The store is joined to the ChocoStory chocolate museum – a member of an international network of museums with branches in Bruges, Paris, and Mexico. In the museum you can dive into the 3,000-year-old history of chocolate. You can learn when, where, and who used it for the first time, who brought it to Europe, how it spread, and how it is made today. You can also learn that chocolate is good for your health, and remember the good old times over a collection of chocolate wraps. In the showroom, our chocolatiers will show how pralines are made; and you can also taste them or to try the work with the chocolate yourselves in one of the workshops. Along with that you can see the largest chocolate cascade in the Czech Republic. In Celetná 10, you can dive into the fabulous world of chocolate and candy with all your senses.

GLASS INSPIRATION YOU Glass inspiration for yourFOR senses
Czech glass is a traditional, sought-after product all over the world. Its high quality stems from a rich and centuries-long glasswork tradition, which in North Bohemia dates back to the 13th century. This is the home of CRYSTALEX, the largest and most famous Czech manufacturer of stemware, and one of the leading glass manufacturers in Europe, too. Its portfolio includes numerous stemware sets, decanters, vases, and many decorative items. Most of the CRYSTALEX products that bear the “Bohemia Crystal” trade mark are exported to more than 60 countries all over the world. The most famous traditional sets are Angela and Claudia. The Angela set is characteristic with its modern elegance combined with classical elements. The Claudia set is inseparably linked to the CRYSTALEX name. It has been manufactured since 1974, and leads sales to the present. So far, more than 150 million sets have been made, and it is obvious that this number is to grow. The glassAngela set works pay great attention to the development of new products. In cooperation with leading Czech designers, numerous interesting new sets that can satisfy a wide range of customers have been included in the portfolio, such as Diana, Lara, Natalie, Maxima, Vintage, Vicenza, Bastia, Barline, Ideal, and Gina, to name at least some. These sets are classical and modern, older and designed just recently. However, all of them are successful. Rainbow set

The reconstruction was bankrolled by governmental funds with a substantial contribution by the Prague Heritage Fund, under the supervision of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and Václav Havel, the Czech president. The palace gardens on the southern slopes of the hill crowned with the Prague Castle complex consist of five historic gardens: the Ledebour Garden, the Small Pálffy Garden, the Great Pálffy Garden, the Kolowrat Garden and the Small Fürstenberg Garden. These gardens represent a unique historic complex which is one of most significant Baroque garden works in Europe. Due to the lack of maintenance, these beautiful and historically priceless objects reached a state of catastrophe, and were closed to the public in the seventies. In 1784, Lady Marie Barbora Černínová applied a highly-demanding concept of a Baroque garden, designed according to Italian models by architect Ignatius Palliardi. The Prague palace gardens are linked and are accessible from both the Wallenstein street and the Prague Castle garden called “Na Valech.“ They offer their visitors relaxation, pleasant strolls in a cultivated environment, and unforgettable views of the capital. www.palacove-zahrady.cz
In the location of the Small and Great Pálffy Gardens, vineyards and gardens are documented as early as 1454. An engraving from 1685 depicts a large, terrace-like Renaissance-Italian garden at this location. Today’s design – or rather the architectural concept of what has been preserved – goes back to 1751. It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many well-preserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a fourpurpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is

The sanctuary and the cupola were built in 1737–1752 based on Dienzenhofer’s design, and the structure was finished by A. Lurago between 1751 and 1756. The interior is an example of the high Baroque style; the decorations were created by Jan Lukáš Kracker. “Aspects of Alice” is a classical Black Light Theatre performance based on motifs of “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. Audiences in more than 30 countries on three continents have admired this theatrical performance for its imaginativeness, poetics, and perfect technical tricks. With a help of your imagination, Alice will go through all the beautiful and sweet moments of maturing, first loves, awakening adultery, knowledge of life, laughs, tears, joy, and sorrow. All of it takes place against the background of ancient Prague, its architectural jewels, its rich history, and Prague as a crossroads of Christian and Jewish cultures. Large-screen projections, animated film, puppets, unique on-stage tricks, black theatre effects, beautiful contemporary and classical music, and your imagination unite in a breathtaking show unseen in any other theatre.
Daily at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends artists, journalists, and students. Café de Paris, located in the Art-Nouveau Paris hotel, definitely lives up to its name – the original interior and decorations reflect the culture and refined taste of famous Parisian cafés since the beginning of the 1920s, while elements of modern design and free WIFI connection offer guests maximal comfort. Franz Kafka loved our excellent desserts. You can bet that we faithfully follow our tradition. For a century people have enjoyed the famous “Paris” cake in a unique atmosphere. The menu of our café is extensive, with excellent salads, snaks, delicious soups and sandwiches, and other treats tempting guests for a light lunch and/or dinner. It’s up to you whether you choose the Café de Paris for a friendly appointment over a cup of coffee, and/or a business meeting. In the bar located in the back part of the café, our bartenders prepare excellent cocktails for you. The selection is truly wide, and you don’t have to hurry – we don’t close until early morning. U Obecního domu 1 Prague 1 Tel.: +420 222 195 195 www. sarah-bernhardt.cz Open daily: 8 a.m.–2 a.m.
Café Imperial has always been a heavily frequented hot-spot ever since 1914 when the Imperial hotel was built. Prague doesn’t have many places like this. Nowhere else you can find such a unique interior in the Art Deco style with cubist elements, and top Art-Nouveau mosaics. The recent successful reconstruction (the *****hotel and café were re-opened in 2007) even improved the firstrate quality of the café, and – at the same time – it succeeded in preserving the atmosphere, which is inseparable from the Grand Café style. Breakfast, dinner, afternoon cup of tea or coffee, night celebration with friends – everything will be taken care of to the slightest detail by the friendly staff. The menu presents the best of the Czech culinary art. The famous chef Zdeněk Pohlreich and his team are ready to fulfil all the wishes of all their guests. Café Imperial offers a unique chance to dine right in the kitchen and observe how your menu is prepared while you discuss the served wines with your sommelier. The Best Hotel Restaurant of the year 2009 (awarded by the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic) Café Imperial is looking forward to your visit. Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee. The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and savoury espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, and/or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too. The Louvre café was founded in 1902. We are honoured to carry on the tradition of this establishment, which has been a top café culture and cultural life centre ever since its origin. We are proud to have experienced repeated visits by personalities of world-wide significance such as Franz Kafka, Karel Čapek, Albert Einstein, and many others. The café opens at 8 a.m. and offers a wide selection of breakfasts and newspapers. The restaurant serves traditional Czech cuisine, and light fare specialties. The non-smoking part of the restaurant, and several salons, seat parties of up to 15–20 guests. We maintain the tradition of “café sports” – thus you can borrow chess sets and play pool on one of five pool tables. On hot days you can enjoy a stay on an open-air summer terrace. Covering 400 sq m, our newly opened Louvre Photogallery displays the best works of leading Czech photographers. KONĚPRUSY CAVES
One of the most beautiful and best-preserved Gothic castles in Bohemia was built in the first half of the 14th century, and radically rebuilt in 1370. Part of the castle was rebuilt once again in the 16th century in the Renaissance style, and the entire castle was enlarged. The principal castle tower’s ground plan is trapezoidal, and that is why an observant person might be surprised to see all its four edges at once. Kost Castle is also remarkable for its location: it is one of just a few Czech castles it wasn’t built on the top of a hill, but rather at a meeting point of three valleys. During the Prussian-Austrian war, on the night of 28–29 June 1866, the castle was used for a military purpose for the last time, and proved its excellent defence value: the Austrian army successfully diverted two Prussian attacks. The castle has an interesting history, and has had many owners. Kost Castle is owned by the Kinsky family today. The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.” www.caves.cz Open hours: I–III+XII ...............................................closed IV–VI+IX ...................Mo–Su – 8 a.m.–4 p.m. VII–VIII......................Mo–Su – 8 a.m.–5 p.m. X.........................Mo–Su – 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. XI................Mo–Fri – 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. .............................................Sa–Su – closed Reservation for groups, phone: +420 311 622 405 Admission: basic...............................................130 CZK seniors 65+.......................................90 CZK children 6–15, students ....................60 CZK chidren under 6.....................................free

KUTNÁ HORA UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE
Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340– 1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted.) (see p. 88–89)
Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. ČESKÝKRUMLOV… …Treasury of History and Art The City of Český Krumlov has been writing its history for more than 700 years. Each century left its unique imprint on the city’s face. Thus, this is a city that boasts great architectural beauty and a magical atmosphere. Under the reign of the Rožmberks the city flourished and dressed itself in a new Renaissance attire. Since then a palatial tower dominates the chateau, the courtyards are decorated with murals by Italian artists, and scratch work facades decorate numerous houses in the city. Another period in the story of the city is marked by the Baroque. The aristocratic love of theatre, music, and creative arts during the period gave birth to a unique chateau theatre, which resounds with tones of baroque operas in their original staging. You can admire the baroque beauty of the chateau in its rooms and the garden. Local noblemen were gourmets, too; with good food they enjoyed good local beer. The brewery that bears the name of the aristocratic family of Eggenberg has been brewing beer to this day. The last aristocratic family who influenced the shape of the chateau and the city were the family of Schwarzenberg. Ever since then, the image of the local landmarks hasn’t significantly changed. Egon Schiele, a controversial painter, was enchanted by the charms of the city. Works such as “Dead City” and “City on the Blue River” were created here. We can take a look at the city through the eyes of the renowned Expressionist in the local Egon Schiele Art Centrum. This year, the Art Centrum is organising an extensive exhibition entitled “Mysterium Šumava Forest”. There you can encounter both rare works by the classic artists such as Josef Váchal and Josef Seidel, and works by the contemporary artists Karin Pliem (Austria), Katharina Dietlinger (Germany) and Ondřej Maleček (Czech Republic). The fasci-
nating theme of the Šumava Mountains is presented as an eternal inspiration for both the arts and the life of the common people. Everyday life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was captured in the photographs of Josef Seidel. The original, authentic ArtNouveau Seidel studio building welcomes visitors and lets them discover the secrets of early artistic photography… In 1992, another significant year in the history of the city, Český Krumlov was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. The contemporary city pulsates with colourful life. Krumlov resounds with music of various genres, and concerts feature music stars such as Placido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Jonas Kaufmann, Anna Netrebko. And the story of the city continues…

9WEEKSOFBAROQUE
History has walked through the cultural Czech landscape for several thousand years. The baroque, in particular, has left a remarkable trace behind. As part of the Pilsen – European Capital City of Culture 2015 project, more than 600 events are organised, including the 9 Weeks of Baroque summer festival. It will take place in nine areas of the Pilsen Region, and will take both locals and foreign visitors through the region's history and places of interest with impressive monastery complexes, rural farms, aristocratic chateaux, and tiny baroque structures located all over the countryside. In the nine weeks of July and August, these unique landmarks and the countryside will host concerts of baroque music, theatrical performance, dances, fairs, and festivals.
29 June – 5 July Nepomuk and the southern vicinity of Pilsen The first week will feature the countryside south of Pilsen, the birthplace of Johannus Nepomuceni – the Central-European saint and one
of the patrons of the Czech Lands, presenting interesting programs at the baroque chateaus Kozel, Žinkovy, and Nebílovy. The festival will open at the Zelená Hora chateau with a light show, fireworks, and the performance of a baroque opera by Francesco Cavalli.
The only spa town in the Pilsen Region, Konstantinovy Lázně, is a small gemstone in the midst of a beautiful countryside, hiding centuries of history in baroque chateaus and monasteries. The most famous of them is the monastery in Kladruby, a breathtaking work of Jan Blažej Santini.
3 – 9 August Domažlice and vicinity, the Chod region The city of Domažlice and the Chod region have a special place in the Pilsen Region and in Bohemia. Here, the tradition and folk costumes are still much alive. It is the only vivid ethnographic region in Bohemia.
6 – 12 July The Jesuit city of Klatovy, and the miraculous Madonna The second week invites to Klatovy to visit the catacombs under the complex of Jesuit buildings, to see the miraculous picture of the Virgin Mary of Klatovy in the Dean church, and to visit the Sunday fair. The week starts with a pilgrimage to the church in Nicov, built by K. I. Dientzenhofer. The following day the program moves to the Chudenice chateaux, listed as an urban heritage area. The mid of the week offers culinary and folklore programs at the water chateau Švihov, and a program in the chateau Týnec.
10 – 16 August Radnice / Plasy Ten Santini’s Stars on the Skies of the Countryside – this is the name of this baroque week that aims to alight the old pilgrimage path between the monastery in Plasy and the pilgrimage church in Mariánská Týnice, and to present other churches, monasteries, and farms built by Jan Blažej Santini. You are also invited to spend a baroque night in the city of Radnice.
13 – 19 July Chotěšov / Dobřany / Přeštice The third baroque week, the Crossroads of Pilgrims and the Miraculous Lady of Přeštice, aims to draw attention to the renovated way of the cross on the Cross Hill, the baroque night in the Chotěšov monastery, the chateau Rochlov, the church in Vejprnice, the baroque Gigant farm, and the 300-year-old picture of the Miraculous Madonna of Přeštice, in the baroque church in Přeštice, a pearl of the Dientzenhofer architecture.
17 – 23 August Manětín / Rabštejn / Nečtiny The story of this week is called The Countryside of Baroque Sculptures. Those who come can expect an enlivened Mill Trail between Nečtiny and Manětín. One of the last grand musical events of the 9 Weeks of Baroque is to be the Messiah Oratorio by Händel, performed in the St. John Baptist church in Manětín.
20 – 26 July Tachov / Planá This baroque week invites to the Path to the Springs, taking visitors to places located in the outskirts of the famous triangle of WestBohemian spa towns, the Premonstratesian monastery in Teplá – a national cultural landmark – and to concerts in the largest Czech riding hall near Tachov.
24 – 30 August Sušice and vicinity, Nýrsko The organisers have called the last baroque week Under the Auspice of the Guardian Angel. It will open with a nocturnal illumination of the path to Svatobor, the pilgrimage hill above the city of Sušice. The 9 Weeks of Baroque festival then will close with a traditional pilgrimage to the Guardian Angel chapel.
