Dear visitors to Prague, dear readers, As I write this editorial, the tones of Prague Spring are slowly fading. Already in its 70th edition, this festival is one of the most significant events in Classical music in Prague. But don’t worry; the upcoming summer season has plenty to offer to the lovers of Classical music, like Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, which we will be able to see at the Estates Theatre. And, as it’s traditional, September will belong to the international music festival, Dvorak Prague.

Even though the summer is a vacation season for theatre, there’s still a lot to see in June, like the première of Verdi’s “Macbeth”, the rich program of the world-famous Laterna Magika and other Black Theatres; while the end of the summer vacations will be brightened by the new circus festival Summer Letná. This is a year of major anniversaries. It’s been 70 years since the end of the worst armed conflict in human history, World War II. On this occasion, I dare say it is mandatory to visit the exhibitions “The Auschwitz Album”, presented by Prague City Gallery and the Jewish Museum, and “70” – World War II through the lenses of Czech Photographers, at Prague Castle. But if

you would like to relax from this heavy issue, you can go admire Symbolism in the Czech Lands, at the National Gallery, or really amaze yourselves with the works in glass of Václav Cigler at Troja Château. And if that important anniversary was not enough, it has been 600 years since the martyrdom of a major figure in Czech history, Master Jan Hus. On 5 and 6 July we will remember his legacy and ideas, but also the contemporary Middle-Age atmosphere, with a large program in Old Town Square, the Fruit Market and Bethlehem Chapel; or you could join a pilgrimage through the churches linked with the Czech Religious Reformation. The summer months encourage us to rest. While wondering around

the picturesque and romantic alleys of Prague, stop for a moment to take a break, have a cup coffee at one of the countless cafés or restaurants in the Golden City and get inspiration for your next experience — maybe one from this guide. And if you’re heading beyond the city gates, to the regions of the Czech Republic, know that the whole country has a lot to offer. I wish you many fulfilling cultural experiences, a beautiful summer, and I hope Prague will become a city that you will remember with love and where you will be happy to return.

This exhibition from the collection of the City of Prague Museum, “From Makeshift to Fad”, at Troja Château, presents cast ironwork, whose “lives” are linked to Prague, but come from different Czech foundries, which, in the mid 19th century, were almost 50. The period when cast ironwork begun to be used large scale started at the end of the 18th century, reaching the artistic peak of the industry in the 1830s. Most of the exhibition is, in fact, dedicated to that period, where cast ironwork became first a necessity and later a very popular material; with foundries introducing modern technologies and working together with leading artists. The castings of this period are characterised by their high technical and artist quality. internationally. The exhibits come from both great well-established Czech and foreign galleries, and smaller museums and private collections.

22 April – 27 September 2015 Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia Symbolism is a unique phenomenon. This is how the exhibition presents this artistic style that brought Czech fine arts to the broader European artistic stream for the first time. In that period, special works originated in the Czech environment, influenced by the Symbolism that had been previously mostly a subchapter of Art-Nouveau. Thanks to Symbolism the Czech arts in the following decade ranked among the culture of the old continent. The artists saw themselves as part of a spiritual community, regardless of national or social conditions. Czech artists found it fascinating to become familiar with the work of “related souls” from Paris, London, Berlin, Vienna, Brussels, Cracow and Rome. Note the later close contacts with German, especially Munich, Expressionism, the tight artistic and personal contacts with Parisian cubists, and the links to the international Surrealism movement after WWI. The exhibition presents famous and recognized artists like Alfons Mucha, Max Švabinský, František Bílek, Josef Váchal, Bohumil Kubišta, and Jan Zrzavý. Along with them, you can also see the works of less famous artists, almost unknown

Czech Animated Art – “Večerníček” celebrates 50 years 30 May – 27 September 2015 Wallenstein Riding Hall Czech animated film, the so-called Czech animation school (Jiří Trnka, Hermína Týrlová, Karel Zeman, Břetislav Pojar, Jan Švankmajer, Jiří Barta, and others) has a firm position in the world cinematography. Its heritage is carried on by renown Czech stage designers, artists, and directors of television animated features for children. Its symbol is the “Večerníček” (Evening Boy) show that has been charming children and adults for 50 years. The anniversary celebration culminates with an exhibition, unique for its extent, a story that maps the entire genesis of this phenomenon that was originally meant to be just a little thing, a plain TV Bedtime story. With time, it has overgrown its regular criteria specific for a genre short formation. Its unique dramatic, creative, and animation quality has metamorphosed into an original television element overlapping into other disciplines of the world cinematography.

Artists and Prophets – the Mysterious Path Toward Modernism: 1872–1972 In cooperation with the Schirm Kunsthalle Frankfurt 21 July – 25 October 2015 Veletržní Palace

dedicated a grand exhibition to this phenomenon, presenting about 300 works by artists like Egon Schiele, Frantiwek Kupka, Johannes Baader, Heinrich Vogeler, Joseph Beuys, Jörg Immendorff, and Friedensreich Hudertwasser. The exhibition discovers not only mutually coinciding effects, but draws unexpected links, placing the “prophets” and the artistic avantgarde into far-reaching social and historical relationships.

Egon Schiele perceived himself as a visionary and prophet artist, František Kupka created one of the main development lines of abstract painting refined with spiritual energy, Joseph Beuys sparked a revolution called “social sculpture”, while Friedensreich Hudertwasser was a protector of the environment whose spiral pictures were basically holistic. These basic artistic attitudes would had never originate without ties with the “barefooted prophets”. Their significance for modern arts have remained an unfinished story in substantial features. Their names – Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, Gusto Gräser, Gustav Nagel, Friedrich Muck-Lamberty, and Ludwig Christian Haeusser have been almost forgotten, even though they enjoyed a great deal of popularity, during their lives. They were recognized by artists and intellectuals, although not quite openly in many cases. The Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt am Mein, Germany, in cooperation with the National Gallery in Prague, has

This exhibition dedicated to Henri Rousseau is not just another celebration of the naïve style of the French painter or a study of the iconographic sources that inspired his works. It highlights the paradox of a unique artist, a confrontation of his paintings with the 19th century arts, split between Academism and new painting to Avant Garde artists from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, who recognized Rousseau as the father of modernism. The exhibition intends to present that the works of this French painter belong to the western art style that used an archaic “canon” used in America and Europe ever since the 16th century, until the first two decades of the 20th century. Rousseau is recognized as an artist who significantly influenced the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The exhibition aims at this heritage. The masterpieces by Henri

Don Giovanni returns

to Prague’s summer, at the Estates Theatre MOZART AND PRAGUE – the Opera event of the 2015 Summer Season Following the successful performance of Don Giovanni, Opera Mozart has prepared for the Summer 2015 season the 19th edition of its traditional Stagiona at the Estates Theatre, staging, once again, the most famous opera of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The audience will be able to see the remake of the 1787 world première at the original theatre. There will be 40 performances between 15 July and 28 August 2015. These performances are very popular among the visitors to Prague – last year they were attended by 10,000 people!

See Mozart's Don Giovanni at the original Estates Theatre, with its fascinating history. The period staging of Mozart’s most famous opera was a result of the collaboration with the National Heritage Institute in Pardubice and the Académie Desprez. It recreates the atmosphere of the world première that

took place on 29 October, 1787, right at the Estates Theatre. The great Maestro not only conducted but also played the harpsichord. The authenticity of the original performance of the opera the way it was most likely staged is enhanced by the period decoration, including the lightning, which recreates the possibilities of the time. As it’s traditional, the performance will feature outstanding Czech and foreign soloists.

Giuseppe Verdi Premiered on 11 and 13 June, 2015 State Opera Prague Rampant ambition, inordinate lust for power and mysterious oracles – these are the ingredients of the psychological opera thriller and the first of the three unique creative unions between Giuseppe Verdi and William Shakespeare. Throughout his life, the Italian master was an ardent admirer of the Elizabethan playwright and when in the summer of 1846 he sought subject for his tenth opera, he chose Macbeth. In Macbeth, Verdi started pursuing the path towards musical drama, in which singing is subordinate to the situation and reflects the characters’ psychology and inner emotions, with the dramatic con-

tent being far more important than bel canto. Immediately after its premiere on 14 March; 1847, at the Teatro alla Pergola in Florence, Macbeth set out on its triumphal journey across Europe and was staged in its original form until 1865, when Verdi substantially revised it. This is the version the State Opera Prague is putting on the stage in June.

Leoš Janáček

Premiered on 14 and 16 Mai, 2015 National Theatre Prague Leoš Janáček’s final opera, was inspired by Dostoyevsky’s novel The House of the Dead, reflecting the author’s own experience as a political prisoner in a Siberian penal camp, amid a wide range of convicts condemned for various crimes. In the opera, Janáček put aside the repeatedly treated stories of great female dramatis personae and immersed himself in the world of male “crime and punishment”. The metaphor of “the dead house” gives rise to the composer’s peculiar, anti-dramatic conception of the opera. Even though the life in the camp is depicted lushly and extremely realistically, it all serves as mere coulisse,

SWETT CHOCOLATE FAIRY Sweet moments with a chocolate fairy

In 2008, the company Viva Praha – The Finest Belgian Chocolate opened a retail store with the best Belgian chocolate in the very center of Prague, just a few steps from the Old Town Square, in Celetná. The store specializes in Belgian chocolate, hand-made by the best chocolatiers from the chocolate capital, Bruges, in Belgium. The freshness of chocolate plays a great role, and that is why at the Viva store you can find only the best products imported directly from artisan producers. Together with classical chocolate products, such as pralines, figures, and bars, at the Viva store you can also buy novelties of the chocolate world, for example chocolate with high content of antioxidants, organic chocolate, and pralines with unusual flavors and combinations. Those who do not like chocolate can enjoy nougat, marzipan, or homemade fudge. Right at the store, while sitting over a cup of coffee in the Jungle bar, you can enjoy cakes, original Belgian wafers, fresh fruits dipped in chocolate, and the original hot chocolate that boasts several awards. The selection is now also supplemented with a section of Belgian beer specialties. Besides chocolate, the store produces the so-called “Rock Candy”. The store has tables prepared for the manufacture of this treat, so you can see the process, which dates back more than 400 years. The store is joined to the ChocoStory chocolate museum – a member of an international network of museums with branches in Bruges, Paris, and Mexico. In the museum you can dive into the 3,000-year-old history of chocolate. You can learn when, where, and who used it for the first time, who brought it to Europe, how it spread, and how it is made today. You can also learn that chocolate is good for your health, and remember the good old times over a collection of chocolate wraps. In the showroom, our chocolatiers will show how pralines are made; and you can also taste them or to try the work with the chocolate yourselves in one of the workshops. Along with that you can see the largest chocolate cascade in the Czech Republic. In Celetná 10, you can dive into the fabulous world of chocolate and candy with all your senses.

“Aspects of Alice” is a classical Black Light Theatre performance based on motifs of “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. Audiences in more than 30 countries on three continents have admired this theatrical performance for its imaginativeness, poetics, and perfect technical tricks. With a help of your imagination, Alice will go through all the beautiful and sweet moments of maturing, first loves, awakening adultery, knowledge of life, laughs, tears, joy, and sorrow. All of it takes place against the background of ancient Prague, its architectural jewels, its rich history, and Prague as a crossroads of Christian and Jewish cultures. Large-screen projections, animated film, puppets, unique on-stage tricks, black theatre effects, beautiful contemporary and classical music, and your imagination unite in a breathtaking show unseen in any other theatre.

Daily at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends artists, journalists, and students. Café de Paris, located in the Art-Nouveau Paris hotel, definitely lives up to its name – the original interior and decorations reflect the culture and refined taste of famous Parisian cafés since the beginning of the 1920s, while elements of modern design and free WIFI connection offer guests maximal comfort. Franz Kafka loved our excellent desserts. You can bet that we faithfully follow our tradition. For a century people have enjoyed the famous “Paris” cake in a unique atmosphere. The menu of our café is extensive, with excellent salads, snaks, delicious soups and sandwiches, and other treats tempting guests for a light lunch and/or dinner. It’s up to you whether you choose the Café de Paris for a friendly appointment over a cup of coffee, and/or a business meeting. In the bar located in the back part of the café, our bartenders prepare excellent cocktails for you. The selection is truly wide, and you don’t have to hurry – we don’t close until early morning. U Obecního domu 1 Prague 1 Tel.: +420 222 195 195 www. sarah-bernhardt.cz Open daily: 8 a.m.–2 a.m.

Café Imperial has always been a heavily frequented hot-spot ever since 1914 when the Imperial hotel was built. Prague doesn’t have many places like this. Nowhere else you can find such a unique interior in the Art Deco style with cubist elements, and top Art-Nouveau mosaics. The recent successful reconstruction (the *****hotel and café were reopened in 2007) even improved the firstrate quality of the café, and – at the same time – it succeeded in preserving the atmosphere, which is inseparable from the Grand Café style. Breakfast, dinner, afternoon cup of tea or coffee, night celebration with friends – everything will be taken care of to the slightest detail by the friendly staff. The menu presents the best of the Czech culinary art. The famous chef Zdeněk Pohlreich and his team are ready to fulfil all the wishes of all their guests. Café Imperial offers a unique chance to dine right in the kitchen and observe how your menu is prepared while you discuss the served wines with your sommelier. The Best Hotel Restaurant of the year 2009 (awarded by the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic) Café Imperial is looking forward to your visit. Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee. The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and savoury espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, and/or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too. The Louvre café was founded in 1902. We are honoured to carry on the tradition of this establishment, which has been a top café culture and cultural life centre ever since its origin. We are proud to have experienced repeated visits by personalities of world-wide significance such as Franz Kafka, Karel Čapek, Albert Einstein, and many others. The café opens at 8 a.m. and offers a wide selection of breakfasts and newspapers. The restaurant serves traditional Czech cuisine, and light fare specialties. The non-smoking part of the restaurant, and several salons, seat parties of up to 15–20 guests. We maintain the tradition of “café sports” – thus you can borrow chess sets and play pool on one of five pool tables. On hot days you can enjoy a stay on an open-air summer terrace. KUTNÁ HORA UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340– 1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted.) (see p. 90–91)

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360.

KONĚPRUSY CAVES

One of the most beautiful and best-preserved Gothic castles in Bohemia was built in the first half of the 14th century, and radically rebuilt in 1370. Part of the castle was rebuilt once again in the 16th century in the Renaissance style, and the entire castle was enlarged. The principal castle tower’s ground plan is trapezoidal, and that is why an observant person might be surprised to see all its four edges at once. Kost Castle is also remarkable for its location: it is one of just a few Czech castles it wasn’t built on the top of a hill, but rather at a meeting point of three valleys. During the Prussian-Austrian war, on the night of 28–29 June 1866, the castle was used for a military purpose for the last time, and proved its excellent defence value: the Austrian army successfully diverted two Prussian attacks. The castle has an interesting history, and has had many owners. Kost Castle is owned by the Kinsky family today. The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. KUTNÁHORA – a UNESCO family member for 20 years! Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech cities. The silver mines richness turned it onto the second most significant city next to Prague. Its significance is evident from the existence of two Gothic cathedrals: the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, were included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not

miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, and the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city. A visit to the unique medieval silver mine offers an unforgettable experience; for your underground trip you will get a special stylish outfit. The art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral.

Tábor

This region, where for centuries people have lived in harmony with nature, surprises all visitors with its beauty. Those who come to visit the countless historical landmarks will understand how enlightened and wealthy the local aristocratic families were; and how many excellent artists and craftsmen used to live there. For the generations to come, they have left countless cultural and historical landmarks as evidence of a rich and multi-layered history: ancient cities full of life and culture, majestic Gothic churches, dreamy Renaissance chateaux, monasteries, rural architectural landmarks, interesting technical structures, and sophisticated fishpond systems. Thanks to the absence of large industrial complexes, the landscape has kept its high scenic value. The countryside in South Bohemia remains one of the best preserved, unspoiled, and most beautiful regions of the Czech

Republic, which is also evident from the number of established natural preserved areas. South Bohemia is a region of countless lakes, pine forests, and extensive bogs decorated with the silhouettes of towns and country churches matching the white manors built in the rural baroque style. And the cities are no open-air museums; they vibrate with busy everyday life in an unrepeatable atmosphere. Stop here, stay longer, and come again… South Bohemia won’t disappoint you.

HUSSITETABOR If you travel to the Czech Republic do not forget to head south to Tábor, a city that attracts visitors with its medieval atmosphere, numerous architectural landmarks and with the 600th anniversary of Master Jan Hus’s martyrish death. Master Jan Hus was a RomanCatholic priest, Czech medieval religious thinker, university teacher, reformer, and preacher. Next to John Wycliffe, Jan Hus was one of the first church reformers, officially recognized by Pope John Paul II in 1999.

Jan Hus was born most probably in 1371 in Husinec near Prachatice. He started using the name “Hus” after the Hus castle where Husinec belonged to. He received his primary education in Prachatice and studied further at the university in Prague. He was brought up in a sense of ethical attitude toward life, with the moral principles of human existence in the first place. He graduated as Master of Free Arts in 1396. He worked as teacher at Prague University from 1398, and was its Rector in 1409–1410. In his religious works, he criticized the moral decay of the Catholic Church, who in turn marked him as a heretic, and his teachings as heretical, excommunicating him in 1411. The Constance Council condemned him as a heretic and sentenced him to death by fire when he refused to recant from his teaching (6 July 1415). “I urge you to love each other, to not let violence oppress the good, and to wish truth to everyone.” This famous quote remarkably resonates with present days, and is often quoted within the context of this year’s 600th anniversary of his martyrish death. The day of his burning at the stake is a Czech national holiday. Churches and societies accruing from the Czech and protestant reformation profess his heritage. In the aftermath of these events at the beginning of the 15th century and the Hussite revolution in the Czech lands the Hussite stronghold was founded in 1420 and called the “Fort of the Tabor Mountain”, the city of Tábor today. After he was expelled from Prague, Jan Hus found shelter in the nearby Sezimovo Ústí and Kozí hrádek, where he often preached. This is why many of his dedicated followers lived in the region they were looking for safe heaven against persecution by the mighty South-Bohemian regent, Oldřich of Rožmberk and other opponents of John Hus’ teaching. Tábor happened to become the most significant center of SouthBohemian Hussites, the affairs and the life in the city were directed by military needs. The fortification system,

gradually built in Tábor, was an example for European cities in the centuries to come. Shortly after the foundation of the community, the Tábor Hussites elected four regents. The most famous of them was Jan Žižka of Trocnov, an undefeated warlord of the Hussite revolution. The city of Tábor is the second largest city in South Bohemia. For its rich history, architectural landmarks, and interesting natural location it is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Czech Republic. The historical center has preserved its medieval character, and for its unique urban layout was proclaimed an urban preservation area. To commemorate John Hus’s heritage, Tábor has prepared numerous cultural and social events, including exhibitions, conferences, talks, and concerts:

1 May – 31 July David and Goliath exhibition, subtitled “What the Hussites were fighting for”

6 June – 31 October Jan Hus 1415/2015 exhibition

23 – 26 June International Symposium of the Hussitologists

5 July My Fatherland – an open-air concert of the Smetana Philharmonic Orchestra of Prague presenting the set of symphonic poems My Fatherland, by Bedřich Smetana; free admission

6 July The Preacher – a musical on the life of Master Jan Hus composed by Zdeněk Plech, a soloist of the Opera of the National Theater in Prague; open air performance, free admission

11 – 13 September Tábor Encounters – the 24th edition of an international historical festival; the Hussites is the theme for this year

All of the structures are samples of manors, farm houses, cottages, barns, waterpowered technical facilities, and tiny sacred sites, mostly from the 18th to early 20th centuries. The Silver trails of the Mladá Vožice region present the unique silver mining history from the 16th to early 20th centuries. Some remnants of mining activities are still visible, such as stacks, pits and water structures. Mining history enthusiasts consider this area as one of the best preserved.
