Dear Friends, We offer you one of the ways to spend a while pleasantly in Prague – visit one of Prague’s vineyards and sample some local wine. You may be surprised, but in Prague they really do grow grapes and produce wine, in several vineyards. True, we cannot precisely date the beginnings of the cultivation of varietal grapes on the land of what is today Prague, but there is documentation that there were vineyards in Prague back in the days of the rule of King Wencelsas II (1137–1192), and that after the accession of King Přemysl Otakar II (1233–1278) many more were established. Under the government of the Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV (1316–1378), thanks to his decree of 16 February 1358 on the establishment of vineyards, which was valid within three miles of Prague, all suitable land (southern slopes) was planted with vines. Concurrently with this decree the ruler also issued vineyard rights to protect and support vineyards and named a special official, a so-called Vineyard Hill Master. For Prague, this official’s office remained active until 1848. Under the rule of Emperor Rudolf II (1552–1616) viniculture enjoyed its greatest boom, and with its 720 hectares of vineyards Prague became known as the ”City of Wine.“ After the battle of White Mountain (1620) and influenced by martial unrest during the Thirty Years War, the vineyards lay fallow and abandoned, but even so in 1776 there were nearly 700 hectares of vineyards in Prague. In the middle of the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th century the areas covered by vineyards in Prague declined markedly. Not until the second half of the 19th century did Czech viniculture undergo a revival. Today Prague’s vineyards cover about 12 hectares but all boast centuries-long histories and rich traditions that survive to this day. There are now just six vineyards within Prague that remind us of the past glory of Prague’s viniculture: St. Klara’s Vineyard and the Salabka vineyard in Troja, the Máchalka vineyard in Vysočany, the Gröbovka vineyard in Vinohrady, the Arcibiskupská vineyard in Modřany, and the St. Wenceslas Vineyard in Prague Castle. Not many people would search in the heart of a European metropolis for an idyllic vineyard. However, capital city Prague offers one. Within the Prague castle complex – a National Cultural Landmark – can be found one of the oldest vineyards in the Czech lands. Its ancient tradition dates back to the 10th century, to the origins of Czech statehood. The unique location of the complex on the eastern rock spur under Prague Castle, above the Old Castle Stairs, offers a unique and immaculate panoramic view of the most beautiful parts of Prague: Old Town, the Lesser Bank, the Belvedere summerhouse, etc. The view is so breathtaking that it alone is sufficient reason for a visit. You can also visit Vintage at Prague Castle (14–15 September 2013). This event celebrates the renewed tradition of viniculture in the Royal Garden of the Prague Castle. The vintage is accompanied by an exhibition on wine and viniculture in the Ballgame Room, and guided theme tours through the Prague Castle’s exteriors. When traveling Prague and the Czech Republic, you should not miss such wonderful experiences. Cheers! www.czechtourism.com • www.welcomeprague.cz
The Prague “Malostranská beseda” cultural center is the new highlight of the Prague’s Royal Route A successful international project of mobile exhibitions, ORBIS PICTUS PLAY by Jiri and Radana Wald, introduces its latest exhibition named Skylights (Dormer Windows) PLAY. The interactive exhibition, which you can touch, play with or even change, created by leading Czech performer Petr Nikl, can be found on the Royal Route in the historical building of Malostranská beseda. Royal Route is the name of a historical route through the center of the Czech capital Prague followed in the past by coronation processions of Kings of Bohemia, greeted by Prague citizens. The route linked two principal royal cites: Prague Castle and the Royal Court in the Old Town. Six interactive expositions constitute the basis of the project, which was first introduced in Paris in 2006. These are called The Gate to the World of Creative Human Imagination, Labyrinth of light, Leporelo Game, Golem, Sensorium, and PLAY, and they are inspired by the Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of
the Heart by the Czech humanist thinker Jan Amos Comenius. The screenplay of the exhibitions stems from the experience acquired while organising interactive exhibitions, The Nests of Games – Rudolfinum Gallery 2000 and The Garden of Fantasy and Music – Czech exposition at EXPO 2005 in Aichi, Japan.

Lenka Vanova, Project Director, said: “The exhibitions are based on the artistic concept of Petr Nikl, developed in co-operation with Czech and international artists. They have been viewed by more than 2.6 million people all over the world since 2000. Individual expositions try to encourage imagination, creativity and fantasy by means of interactive tools and objects. Individual sections of the exhibitions focus primarily on the phenomenon of play – on creative cognition of the world through ourselves and our own senses.” It is essential to touch The seventh exhibition of the ORBIS PICTUS PLAY series encourages visitors to engage in “the game”
and bring the exhibits to life. The exhibits are usually tools which give rise to creative artwork once the visitor’s active fantasy has been involved. The project mirrors the strength of the creative desire for cognition, but also proves that the phenomenon of play can function as a universal communication tool regardless of nationality, religion, or age. This way the project builds on and develops the timeless philosophy of Jan Amos Comenius. Rostislav Vondruska, Director of CzechTourism, said: “The exhibition is attractive to people of all nationalities because there is no language barrier. People everywhere like to play. The exhibition is conveniently located in the very 9
heart of Prague and makes a nice break for those walking up the Royal Route and perhaps looking for a bit of rest as well as enjoyment for their children.” The main part of the Vikyre PLAY exhibition is situated in five attic rooms containing the individual attic windows. There is a stunning view of the St. Nicholas Cathedral, one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Prague, and Malostranské Square from these windows. Some of the tools forming the exhibition create a link between these individual rooms, some of them sit on the floor between them and others hang from the ceiling like bats. “Nikl’s concept at Malostranská beseda creates imaginative space for all senses and is open to everyone regardless of age or social status,” adds Lenka Vanova. The exhibition is designed as an ever-changing project offering something new even to visitors who have attended before.

Its history began in 1715, when Count František Antonín Špork began construction of his “bon repos” (a good, quiet, and pleasant rest) for his contemplation. On its path through history, the chateau had numerous owners. However, it once again offers visitors – above all – quiet, absolute privacy in the shadow of century-old trees, and a touch of history in reconstructed buildings decorated with rare murals. The entire chateau complex can be used for both civil and church weddings. The ceremonies can take in the chateau chapel, the Chinese Pavilion, the Příchovský Hall in the New Chateau, and the park. The complex is especially suitable for guests who seek a special environment and intimacy in the midst of nature. The chateau lies some 25 kilometers north-east of Prague. THE CITY OF PRAGUE MUSEUM INVITES YOU TO VISIT: LANGWEIL’S MODEL OF PRAGUE Langweil’s model of Prague, from 1826–1834, is a unique, and the most attractive, exhibit in the Museum of Capital City Prague. It is a unique dokument of the likeness of the Old Town, Lesser Bank and the Prague Castle before the redevelopment of Prague at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It was hand-made of cardboard during 11 years by an employee of the Prague University Library, Antonín Langweil (1791–1837), who dedicated to his unusual hobby all his leisure time and financial resources. He died unrecognized, in poverty. It is now when we are able to appreciate the significance of the model as both an excellent document, and an unusual piece of artwork. On some 20 square meters, the historical center of Prague is depicted in the shape it had some 180 years ago. More than 2,000 colored buildings are made in a scale of 1:480, with all details. For many buildings that no longer exist Langweil’s model is the only evidence of their likeness. A demanding and unique project of digitization of the model was finished in February 2009, thus Prague is the only city in the world that offers a 3D virtual model of the city of such extent and detail. The digitization also makes it possible to visit a 3D cinema projection during which you can visit historical Prague at the beginning of the 19th century. Reservations at: Tel.: +420 221 709 674, e-mail: 3dkino@muzeumprahy.cz Open hours of the museum: Tue–Sun 9 a.m.–6 p.m., every last Wednesday of the month 9 a.m.–8 p.m. More info: www.langweil.cz CTĚNICE CHATEAU COMPLEX The Ctěnice chateau complex is an ideal destination for those who have been longing – for some time – to leave the famous landmarks in the busy center of Prague, and prefer the quiet of the country. In half an hour by subway and bus, you can stroll through a beautiful park surrounding a chateau, reconstructed in its contemporary likeness in 2008. This former medieval Gothic stronghold has – over the centuries – changed its owners, and changed its shape from Renaissance, through baroque, to classicist style. The chateau has a set of farm buildings: a sheep-cote, a granary, a catchpole’s house, and a riding hall. The complex houses a riding association, which offers horseback rides in the riding hall and in the vicinity of the chateau for both advanced riders and weak-spirited beginners under the lead of an experienced trainer. The chateau garden nursery, whose history dates back to the 16th century, presents the traditional gardening trade in a unique historical environment. Flower lovers can buy flowers there or just admire the garden, which boasts a unique collection of perennials. Inside the chateau you can find preserved fragments of Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque murals. Both the chateau’s interiors and the entire complex are used by the Museum of Capital City Prague for presentations of its rich collection funds. There you can also find a hotel with 26 rooms, a restaurant, and a café. City Gallery Prague Passion, dream, and ideal / Czech Art-Nouveau Sculptures 3 April – 3 November 2013, Trója Chateau This new exhibition in the Trója Chateau in Prague presents for its visitors the story of Czech Art-Nouveau sculpting, starting with neo-classicist works by Josef Václav Myslbek (1848–1922), and on to works by his most significant pupils, such as Josef Mařatka (1874–1937), Quido Kocian (1874–1928), Bohumil Kafka (1878–1942), and Jan Štursa (1880–1925). The exhibition also includes his wrongfully neglected pupils, whom it tries to bring back within the context of the period. Those include the talented sculptor František Hošek (1871–1895), who died very young and studied with Myslbek at the School of Decorative Arts, and graduates from the Academy of Creative Arts in Prague Vladimír Astl (1876–1960), Josef Kalvoda (1874–1925), the Czech-German artist Alois Rieber (1876–1944), Ladislav Kofránek (1880–1954), and Jaroslav Krepčík (1880–1959). Each and every one took his own path, but their works from the times during and shortly after their studies mutually encountered within both genres and styles. The exhibition offers a crosscut of works by leading personalities of Czech sculpting from the turn of the centuries, from the traditional conception of Myslbek through the naturalist tendencies of the period that influenced the Czech arts along with the impressionistic concept of shape. The exhibition also presents Art-Nouveau works by Stanislav Sucharda (1866–1916) and Ladislav Šaloun (1870–1946), while the symbolist sculptor František Bílek (1872–1941) appears in a surprising context. Venetian Smelted, and Czech Cut Glass from the Prague Museum of Decorative Arts Collections (the 16th–19th centuries) 3 April – 3 November 2013, Trója Chateau The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague glass collection includes more than 20 thousand items and is one of the most valuable collections of its kind in Europe and beyond. The presented exhibition at Trója Chateau focuses on two significant phenomenona of European glasswork: Venetian glass, from the 16th to 18th centuries shaped in the glasswork process, and Czech cut glass from the late 17th to the early 19th centuries. The first records on glassworks in Venetia date back to the 10th century. However, the grandest fame of local glass reached its peak in the 16th and 17th centuries. Venetian-style glass in the Czech lands was manufactured – for example – in the Buquoy domain in Nové Hrady (Gratzen) in South Bohemia. The first signs of baroque style in arts including glassworks in the Czech lands appeared in the early 17th century. The mightiest production of baroque cut glass dates to the period of 1710–1750, when the cut decoration technique dominated over other creative techniques. A similar situation was repeated in the first half of the 19th century, in the Biedermeier period, i.e., the period of the emerging middle class – the burghers, who were the leading customers for high-quality glass. In the 19th century, Czech glass played he role of trendsetter, and also became a significant inspirational and creative element within the framework of European craftsmanship. SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS – HISTORY AND REFLECTION Anežský klášter / Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia 1 November 2013 – 2 March 2014 The 1150th anniversary of arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Greater Moravia is undoubtedly one of the supreme events of the year across nationalities and religious denominations. In the fall of 2011, during the 36th General Conference of UNESCO in Paris, the Cyril-Methodius Maxmilian Pirner: Baptism of a Duke, Cyril and Methodius anniversary was proclaimed series II, pastel on paper, 1886 a UNESCO World Anniversary. Cyril and Methodius, scholar–brothers, arrived in the Greater Moravian Empire – the first known, mighty state spreading across today’s Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary – in 863 from distant Constantinople to educate the Slavic nation living in the area, and to create the first Slavic script and the Old Church Slavonic language. They thus laid the fundaments of a legal system and Czech statehood. This is why we are to celebrate joyfully the round anniversary of their arrival. Throughout the Czech Republic the celebrations take the most various forms: exhibitions, conferences, educational and inter-active programs. The list of events also includes an exhibition installed in the historical ground floor rooms of the St. Agnes of Bohemia Gothic convent, which tops off all Cyril and Methodius related exhibition projects organized this year. The exhibition was prepared by the Moravian Regional Museum in Brno, and the Museum of Art in Olomouc. Thanks to the mutual cooperation of these institutions with the National Gallery, it is possible to present the significance and the historical background of the Cyril and Methodius mission to Prague visitors in a representative and extensive manner. Along with significant archaeological landmarks from the Greater Moravia period, the exhibition also presents works inspired by Cyril and Methodius from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Many of more than 200 unique exhibits (pictures, sculptures, drawings, graphics, and other items) are being presented for the first time ever. The cornerstones of the exhibition are the most precious exhibits from the Moravian Regional Museum in Brno and the Museum of Art in Olomouc. However, the exhibition concept is extended by reflection of the Cyril and Methodius theme in Bohemia. The exhibition in Prague is thus enriched with works from the National Gallery in Prague collections, and numerous items borrowed from the church (sculptures, artisan items). The National Gallery in St. Agnes of Bohemia convent has hosted exhibition projects dedicated to Czech saints and patrons since 1997. This exhibition, dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius, is the fourth in the series (St. Adalbert of Prague, St. Wenceslas, St. Agnes of Bohemia). National Theatre KRABAT The National Theatre Libretto: Jan Kodet, Martin Kukučka, Lukáš Trpišovský Music: Zbyněk Matějů Choreography: Jan Kodet Krabat – a dance performance for which its creators have revived the theme of an old Wendish legend dating from the turn of the 17th
and 18th centuries: the famous story of a boy who on the threshold of adulthood comes to know black magic and is fascinated by it until he realises that it can kill him. It depicts the danger of encountering mysterious powers that can allure and infatuate. The hero arrives at the conclusion that only love is able to overwhelm the darkest magic. The performance is intended for audiences of all age categories. Orchestra of the National Theatre Opera Duration of the performance: 2 hours 15 minutes, 1 intermission
TURANDOT Giacomo Puccini The State Opera Prague Libretto: Giuseppe Adami, Renato Simoni The Persian fairy-tale Turandot from the dervish Mokles’s 17th-century collection. The One Thousand and One Nights, has inspired numerous poets and composers. Giacomo Puccini worked on Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni’s libretto, based on Carlo Gozzi’s play, in the final years of his life, when he was fighting cancer of the larynx. Just as in the case of Madama Butterfly, he diligently strove to gain thorough knowledge of the culture and songs of an exotic, faraway land (in this case China). Puccini died before he managed to complete the opera: the task was undertaken by his friend and pupil Franco Alfano, who drew upon the 36 pages of sketches left by the composer. The opera was premiered on 25 April 1926 at Milan’s La Scala, conducted by Arturo Toscanini, who paid tribute to the late Puccini when in Act 3, after the words “Liu, poesia!”, he laid down his baton, turned to the audience and announced: “Here the opera ends, because at this point the maestro died”. Alfano’s finale was only included in the next performance. The cruel and beautiful Princess Turandot tests her wooers with riddles and when they fail they are duly executed. Only Prince Calaf succeeds, and his love ultimately overwhelms Turandot’s coldness. The opera is staged in Italian original version and Czech and English surtitles are used in the performance. www.narodni-divadlo.cz 26

The Palace Gardens under Prague Castle led by the new owner – the State Preservation Institute. The reconstruction was bankrolled by governmental funds with a substantial contribution by the Prague Heritage Fund, under the supervision of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales and Václav Havel, the Czech president. During the first phase, the Ledebour and Small Pálffy Gardens underwent reconstruction. These gardens were opened to the public in June 1995. The second phase – finished in August 2000 – covers the three remaining gardens (the Great Pálffy Garden was opened in 1997).
The palace gardens on the southern slopes of the hill crowned with the Prague Castle complex consist of five historic gardens: the Ledebour Garden, the Small Pálffy Garden, the Great Pálffy Garden, the Kolowrat Garden and the Small Fürstenberg Garden. These gardens represent a unique historic complex which is one of most significant Baroque garden works in Europe. Due to the lack of maintenance, these beautiful and historically priceless objects reached a state of catastrophe, and were closed to the public in the seventies. It was not until 1989 that reconstruction commenced, 40

In 1784, Lady Marie Barbora Černínová applied a highly-demanding concept of a Baroque garden, designed according to Italian models by architect Ignatius Palliardi. The Prague palace gardens are linked and are accessible from both the Wallenstein street and the Prague Castle garden called “Na Valech.“ They offer their visitors relaxation, pleasant strolls in a cultivated environment, and unforgettable views of the capital. www.palacove-zahrady.cz
In the location of the Small and Great Pálffy Gardens, vineyards and gardens are documented as early as 1454. An engraving from 1685 depicts a large, terrace-like Renaissance-Italian garden at this location. Today’s design – or rather the architectural concept of what has been preserved – goes back to 1751. It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many well-preserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a fourpurpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is

The St. Nicolas’s Church Malostranské nám. 556/29 The construction of this church started in 1704 on the site of a small, older Gothic church. The frontispiece was finished in 1710 and the nave, with its wreath of chapels, was consecrated in 1711. This part was clearly built by Christopher Dienzenhofer. The sanctuary and the cupola were built in 1737–1752 based on Dienzenhofer’s design, and the structure was finished by A. Lurago between 1751 and 1756. The interior is an example of the high Baroque style; the decorations were created by Jan Lukáš Kracker. The Crucifixion (1646) in St. Barbara’s chapel and Christ’s Passion series (1670), all pictures by Karel Škréta, originally created for the Jesuit Profession House, form the most significant part of the interior decoration.
The Petřín Observation Tower The construction of the Petřín observation tower was initiated by the Czech Tourist Club on the occasion of the Jubilee Land’s Exhibition. It is a scale model (1:5) of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed by Ing. František Prášil from the famous ČKD factory. Its construction started on 16 March 1891 and was finished on 20th August of the same year. The tower is located at an altitude of 324 m above sea level and is 60 m tall. It weighs about 168 tons and the base of the tower is formed by an octagon with a diameter of 20 m. The observation point is at a height of 50.98 m and you can get there climbing up 299
Most of the sculptures in the church are works by I. F. Platzer. The oldest sculpture in the church is Our Lady of Foyen on the left altar, brought by the Jesuits from Belgium in 1629. The tower of the church (the baroque belfry) actually never was an integral part of the church as it was an independent property owned by the Lesser Town of Prague. It served as the bell- and observationtower. As a observation tower, it was also used by the Secret Police during the communist era, until 1989. Important facts about the church: Height of the cupola: 50 m inside; 70 m outside; 79 m with the clerestory Width of the church: 40 m Width of the nave: 30 m Length of the church: 60 m (without the stairs) Triumphal arch between the church and the presbytery: 24 m, depth 24 m Surface area of the murals: 3000 m The church is open daily: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. (III–X), 9 a.m.–4 p.m. (XI–II), closed 24. 12. BLACK LIGHT THEATRE Daily at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. “Aspects of Alice” is a classical Black Light Theatre performance based on motifs of “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. Audiences in more than 30 countries on three continents have admired this theatrical performance for its imaginativeness, poetics, and perfect technical tricks. With a help of your imagination, Alice will go through all the beautiful and sweet moments of maturing, first loves, awakening adultery, knowledge of life, laughs, tears, joy, and sorrow. All of it takes place against the background of ancient Prague, its architectural jewels, its rich history, and Prague as a crossroads of Christian and Jewish cultures. Large-screen projections, animated film, puppets, unique on-stage tricks, black theatre effects, beautiful contemporary and classical music, and your imagination unite in a breathtaking show unseen in any other theatre.

For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends artists, journalists, and students. Café de Paris, located in the Art-Nouveau Paris hotel, definitely lives up to its name – the original interior and decorations reflect the culture and refined taste of famous Parisian cafés since the beginning of the 1920s, while elements of modern design and free WIFI connection offer guests maximal comfort. Franz Kafka loved our excellent desserts. You can bet that we faithfully follow our tradition. For a century people have enjoyed the famous “Paris” cake in a unique atmosphere. The menu of our café is extensive, with excellent salads, snaks, delicious soups and sandwiches, and other treats tempting guests for a light lunch and/or dinner. It’s up to you whether you choose the Café de Paris for a friendly appointment over a cup of coffee, and/or a business meeting. In the bar located in the back part of the café, our bartenders prepare excellent cocktails for you. The selection is truly wide, and you don’t have to hurry – we don’t close until early morning. U Obecního domu 1 Prague 1 Tel.: +420 222 195 195 www.hotel-paris.cz Open daily: 8 a.m.–2 a.m.
Café Imperial has always been a heavily frequented hot-spot ever since 1914 when the Imperial hotel was built. Prague doesn’t have many places like this. Nowhere else you can find such a unique interior in the Art Deco style with cubist elements, and top Art-Nouveau mosaics. The recent successful reconstruction (the *****hotel and café were reopened in 2007) even improved the firstrate quality of the café, and – at the same time – it succeeded in preserving the atmosphere, which is inseparable from the Grand Café style. Breakfast, dinner, afternoon cup of tea or coffee, night celebration with friends – everything will be taken care of to the slightest detail by the friendly staff. The menu presents the best of the Czech culinary art. The famous chef Zdeněk Pohlreich and his team are ready to fulfil all the wishes of all their guests. Café Imperial offers a unique chance to dine right in the kitchen and observe how your menu is prepared while you discuss the served wines with your sommelier. The Best Hotel Restaurant of the year 2009 (awarded by the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic) Café Imperial is looking forward to your visit. Na Poříčí 15, Prague 1 Tel.: +420 240 011 440 cafe@hotel-imperial.cz www.cafeimperial.cz Open daily: 7 a.m.–11 p.m.
Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee. The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and savoury espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, and/or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too. The Louvre café was founded in 1902. We are honoured to carry on the tradition of this establishment, which has been a top café culture and cultural life centre ever since its origin. We are proud to have experienced repeated visits by personalities of world-wide significance such as Franz Kafka, Karel Čapek, Albert Einstein, and many others. The café opens at 8 a.m. and offers a wide selection of breakfasts and newspapers. The restaurant serves traditional Czech cuisine, and light fare specialties. The non-smoking part of the restaurant, and several salons, seat parties of up to 15–20 guests. We maintain the tradition of “café sports” – thus you can borrow chess sets and play pool on one of five pool tables. On hot days you can enjoy a stay on an open-air summer terrace. Covering 400 sq m, our newly opened Louvre Photogallery displays the best works of leading Czech photographers. One of the most beautiful and best-preserved Gothic castles in Bohemia was built in the first half of the 14th century, and radically rebuilt in 1370. Part of the castle was rebuilt once again in the 16th century in the Renaissance style, and the entire castle was enlarged. The principal castle tower’s ground plan is trapezoidal, and that is why an observant person might be surprised to see all its four edges at once. Kost Castle is also remarkable for its location: it is one of just a few Czech castles it wasn’t built on the top of a hill, but rather at a meeting point of three valleys. During the Prussian-Austrian war, on the night of 28–29 June 1866, the castle was used for a military purpose for the last time, and proved its excellent defence value: the Austrian army successfully diverted two Prussian attacks. The castle has an interesting history, and has had many owners. Kost Castle is owned by the Kinsky family today. KONĚPRUSY CAVES The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.” www.caves.cz Open hours: I–III+XII ...............................................closed IV–VI+IX ...................Mo–Su – 8 a.m.–4 p.m. VII–VIII......................Mo–Su – 8 a.m.–5 p.m. X.........................Mo–Su – 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. XI................Mo–Fri – 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. .............................................Sa–Su – closed Reservation for groups, phone: +420 311 622 405 Admission: basic...............................................130 CZK seniors 65+.......................................90 CZK children 6–15, students ....................60 CZK chidren under 6.....................................free

WELCOME TO THE CITY OF GINGERBREAD, CULTURE, AND SPORTS Most people think of Pardubice as the city of gingerbread, the Grand Pardubice Steeplechase, and the Golden Helmet motorcycle race. The first written evidence of Pardubice dates back to 1295. The boom of the city can be credited to the aristocratic dynasty of Pernštejn. The Pernštejns reconstructed the city: first in the late Gothic style, and after 1538 in the style of the early Renaissance. The success of the reconstruction is evident from a manuscript from the 1530s, stating that the Czechs used a saying, “it shines like Pardubice.” The city is grateful to the Pernštejns for its entire historical center, with its Renaissance square, picturesque lanes, and the 60-meter Green Gate which dominates the city skyline.
