Charles IV and Prague – 700 years When All Roads Led to Prague

This slogan reminisces Prague in the year of the 700th anniversary of the birth of its most famous native, King and Emperor Charles IV. The Prague of Charles’s times had many shapes. At the time when a boy named Wenceslas was born in the Old Town, the population was just about ten thousand. In his autobiography, Vita Caroli, Charles IV writes: “This King of Bohemia John (of Luxembourg) and Queen Elisabeth (of Bohemia) gave birth to their eldest son named Wenceslas, Anno Domini 1316, on 14 May, at five o’clock in the morning…”

Charles IV, who took the name from his French tutor Charles IV the Beautiful, changed Prague completely. As an accomplished merchant, he freed those who set up enterprises in Prague, and also brought craftsmen and builders. He built new churches, monasteries and the entire New Town of Prague on the architectural pattern of Jerusalem. The streets of the New Town keep many medieval secrets to these days. This illustrated ruler, who wrote in Latin, German, Italian and French, also adopted Czech language: “And so, when We arrived in Bohemia, We found nor father, nor mother, nor brother, nor sister, nor anyone familiar. We had also fully forgotten the Czech language, but We learned it again later thus We spoke and understood it as any other Czech…”

the Bohemian Crown Jewels at Prague Castle, a three-month exhibition of rare exhibits from the Bavarian National Exhibition at the Wallenstein Riding Hall, numerous concerts, medieval fairs and street shows that intend to make a visit to Prague even more pleasant, and will induce an atmosphere of the times of 700 hundred years ago. We have prepared guided tours through the city named “In the footprints of Charles IV” as well as lectures, and a leaflet titled as this article: “When all roads led to Prague”, where you can find a list of all the celebration events in Prague.

The small and lonely boy returned from faraway countries to the Czech Lands as a mature youngster who proved that diplomacy and political negotiations were his strength. As the Holy Emperor, he got involved in European conflicts and always came out with a good compromise. He also used to crown his politics with a successful marriage policy, being himself a good example: his four marriages, especially with his beloved Blanche of Valois, brought the empire significant territorial advances.

We invite you to the city that breathes with history and has a modern face. Where the traces of Charles IV disappeared, you can find modern buildings with clubs, restaurants, galleries, sports facilities, and shopping centers. You can find the links between the past and the future everywhere. The city lives and breathes. It preserves the atmosphere endowed by the great personalities of the past, and lives in the present. Prague is well worth a visit.

One of the film studios at Strahov will be turned into a “fashion temple” where all the fashion shows and accompanying programs will take place.

Febiofest 2016 International Film Festival 17 – 23 March 2016, Prague The 23 edition of this international film festival offers more than 400 film projections in 9 days. Febiofest will present the best films from prestigious festivals from all over the world: awarded films from Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Toronto, San Sebastian, and several films nominated for the Oscars. The festival also awards several famous filmmakers every year. This year, the author of the scripts of The Queen and The Last King of Scotland, Peter Morgan, will take the prize for his contribution to world cinematography. Charles IV in Brandenburg Exhibition In progress until 31 May 2016, Lidice In 2016, the Czech Republic commemorates the 700 th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV, who was born on 14 May 1316. You can visit an event honoring the personality of the ruler already in the first half of the year. One of the first events is the Charles IV in Brandenburg exhibition, mapping the final years of the king’s life, when the emperor acquired Brandenburg, an important trade center of the empire, for his son Wenceslas. In the Lidice Memorial, along with this exhibition, you can also visit the Walkyrie Operation exhibition dedicated to the attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and the permanent exhibition commemorating the destruction of Lidice in WW II.

Night Run Ostrava 2016

The night run in Ostrava is the first from a series of eight runs, scheduled between 16 April and 15 October 2016 in big cities of the Czech Republic. Up to 1,500 runners with headlamps will participate in the 5 or 10 kilometer

A special category is prepared for children, as well as a noncompetitive Bosch Family Run for families on 2 kilometers. ZLIN DESIGN WEEK differs from similar events because it covers all fields: from professional designers to marketing managers, students, enthusiasts, and the public at large. The project intends to put design on its right place of its origin, and to show that it is not forbiddingly expensive, but part of our everyday lives. This year’s theme is “Money”, and you can learn how much it moves the world of design at lectures, workshops, in-door and out-door exhibitions, and other events.

Liberation Festival 2016

6 – 8 May 2016, Pilsen

The atmosphere of May 1945, meetings with war veterans, concerts, exhibitions – all is part of the Liberation Festival 2016, celebrating the 71st anniversary of the liberation of Pilsen by American forces. The event evokes the last two days of WW II in the Czech Republic, and the joy of liberation. Along with commemorative events, discussions with war vets, and exhibitions, you can look forward to the Convoy of Liberty – a parade of both historical and contemporary weapons – and a reconstruction of the events at the time of the arrival of American tanks to the Pilsen square on 6 May 1945.

Grand Opening of the Spa Season 13 – 15 May 2016, Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) In the Czech Republic, the first half of May traditionally marks the opening of the spa season. Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) and other famous spa towns, like Luhačovice, Litomyšl, and Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) open their gates to guests. In Marienbad, a traditional city festival takes place on the second weekend of May, which includes the symbolic opening of the springs. You can also look forward to costumed parades, fairs, and open-air concerts of classical, folklore and modern music, and much more.

The Ride of Kings in Vlčnov 2016

27 – 29 May 2016, Vlčnov

This ancient popular festivity with a tradition that goes back two hundred years has been included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The festival is topped-off with a procession of a king and his suit on decorated horses, running through the entire village. It is an original initiation ritual where 18-year-old boys become adults in their community. Each and every one can be© Filip Fojtík come a member of the royal suit only once in his life, while the king is a young boy of 10 – 12 years of age, dressed in a girl’s costume. The Ride of Kings is accompanied by performances of folklore ensembles, brass and dulcimer bands concerts, wine tasting, arts and crafts fair, and exhibitions.

Brno Nights of the Museums 2016

For the 12 time, the cultural institutions of Brno will come alive during the night! Museums, galleries and theaters, and their rooms otherwise closed to the public open their gates to visitors at 6 pm, and remain open until midnight, offering special programs. You can join workshops, lectures, guided tours, and concerts, all for free or for just a symbolic token. Starobrno Ignis Brunensis 2016

The surface of the Brno reservoir will once again glitter with fireworks by pyrotechnists from all over the world who will take part in the Ignis Brunensis 2016 festival. You can look forward to the colorful magic of lights from Portugal, Spain, Slovakia, and the Czech-German Ignis Brunensis team. All fireworks will follow uniform music recorded by the Brno Philharmonic Or© Ignis Brunensis chestra celebrating the 60 th anniversary of their first concert season. This year’s program includes the jubilee 100 th fireworks in the history of the Ignis Brunensis festival, fired as a part of the competition by the Slovak team on 8 June on the Brno reservoir. This prestigious festival enters the fifth decade of its existence. The leading idea of this-year’s 41st edition is an international cooperation following the Schiller – Beethoven’s legacy “Alle Menschen werden Brüder”. The festival intends to react to the wave of terrorism and violence that affects Europe, and, through its musical voice, wants to contribute to international dialogue and democracy. Janáček’s May focuses its program on both world -famous and lesser known and new composers of classical music, from Renaissance to present days. At the same time, it also presents other genres like jazz and musical-dramatic art. The program includes the opening concert with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra (founded in 1870) (on 20 May), with the German conductor Michael Sanderling, and Czech violin virtuoso, Ivan Ženatý, who works in the Cleveland Institute of Music in USA. The program also presents the Prague Symphony Orchestra with violin concerto master, Guy Braunstein (concert master of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra until 2012), conducted by Finnish conductor Pietar Inkinen (on 29 May); an operatic gala concert of the world renowned opera star, mezzo-soprano Dagmar Pecková (on 31 May); a piano recital of the “wonder child” from the NorthMoravian city of Opava, Lukáš Vondráček, who

now lives in USA (on 2 June); and the closing concert honoring the 260th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, featuring Llyˆr Williams from Northern Wales, and the Ostrava Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by a Slovak conductor Peter Feranec (on 9 June). This year Janáček’s May offers 19 evening concerts and a rich accompanying program that includes performances of world stars and leading European symphonic and chamber orchestras, ensembles, and soloists from Germany, France, Australia, Israel, Finland, Poland, Great Britain, Romania, Austria, Northern Wales, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. One of the main advantages of the Janáček’s May festival is its location out of big musical centers. It thus offers affordable tickets, and concerts taking place in non-conventional and unpretentious environments. The festival is based in the MoravianSilesian Region on the historical grounds of Moravia and Silesia, at the crossroads of three countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. This region is the birthplace of the world-famous composer, Leoš Janáček, whose name the festival bears, and boasts numerous interesting locations full of contrasts, beautiful countryside, and unique historical and industrial landmarks.

“Spontaneity in the heart and a grandiose space encountered in one moment.” This is the bombastic description used by critics of the performance of the Graindelavoix ensemble, who specialize on vocal music of the 14th and 15th centuries. Artists from all over Europe open themselves for sound experiments and repertory from previously undiscovered geographical areas. The Prague Spring International Music Festival 2016, as part of a concert series dedicated to the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV, presents the Grandelavoix project in the rooms of the Emmaus monastery, on 19 May. The Belgian ensemble awarded the Edison Prix for innovation, and Prix Caecilia given by the Union de la Presse Musicale Belge, will present a unique program that comEmauzy Abbey bines western Christian liturgy with Greek-Byzantine traditions reaching up to the region of today’s Lebanon. The rooms of the Emauzy Monastery were not chosen by accident. During the reign of Charles IV, it was the only Slavonic monastery and educational center in OldSlavonic language in Western Europe. Shakespeare, Beethoven, and the Czech string quartet tradition meet at the Concentus Moraviae Festival The Concentus Moraviae International Music Festival of 13 Towns offers an opportunity to combine unique musical experiences with a visit to picturesque towns in South Moravia, the Vysočina Region, and Lower Austria. Classical music concerts take place at chateaux, chateau courtyards, and churches every year in June. The unique environment and refreshing programming make the Concentus Moraviae an interesting event for listeners from the festival towns as well as visitors from the entire Czech Republic, and abroad. The 2016 program includes 35 concerts in 21 towns; the theme of the 21st edition is string quartet. This most demanding of all chamber formations is often compared to marriage, thus the motto is a line from the Sonet No. 8 by William Shakespeare: Mark how one string, sweet husband to another, strikes each in each by mutual ordering. The thread of all concerts is chamber music compositions of Ludwig van Beethoven. The festival will present all of his 16 quartets, along with significant compositions of Czech and world repertory, and newly commissioned works. The residence

ensemble of the festival is the Pavel Haas Quartet, the winner of four “Classical Music Oscars”, the Gramophone magazine awards. The ensemble will perform on five concerts, and also offers master classes. Concentus Moraviae will feature leading Czech quartets: Zemlinsky Quartet, Talich Quartet, Škampa Quartet, Janáček Quartet, Pražák Quartet, as well as outstanding foreign ensembles like Dover Quartet, Modigliani Quartet, Kodály Quartet, Danish String Quartet, and Van Kuijk Quartet. Three dozen concerts will present the diversity of the string quartet and the fundamental importance of the Czech quartet composition school. The festival is one of the most significant European quartet shows in recent decades. Some of the performances will be dedicated to other genres (jazz, alternative music) and forms (theater, melodrama, and Shakespeare and Music lectures of professor and translator Martin Hilský, honorary member of the Order the British Empire). The program will be enriched by the Music on Bike event, prepared for music loving cyclists on the Czech-Austrian border, on 11 June. PRAGUE CASTLE CELEBRATES Prague Castle Celebrates

Prague Castle, once the seat of Charles IV, the Czech King and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, commemorates the 700. anniversary of his birth with six exhibition projects. The exhibitions will be open to visitors from 15 May until 28 September, 2016 all around the Prague Castle Complex.

I. The Scepter and the Crown: Charles IV and the Czech Royal Coronations The Imperial Stables This exhibition focuses on the millennium-long history of coronations of Czech kings whose binding rules were set by Charles IV in the mid-14th century. The main exhibit will be the most significant symbol of the Czech royal power – the St. Wenceslas Crown. It was a state and sacral symbol already at the time of its origin, before 1346. For the first time, the famous Scepter and Orb from the Renaissance, will be supplemented with replicas of the original Gothic insignia made especially for the occasion.

II. The Crown of the Kingdom: the Cathedral of Charles IV.

The Prague Castle Riding School The exhibition is dedicated to the St. Vitus Cathedral, the most significant building of Charles IV. It will present it as an extraordinary work of architecture, the coronation and funeral temple of Czech kings, and the spiritual center of the medieval Czech state. The main event of the project is a symbolic opening of the inner and outer triforium, in a simplified 3D replica.

III. The Crown of the Mother of Cities: Completion of the St. Vitus Cathedral in photographs

The Theresian Wing of the Old Royal Palace The exhibition relates to the cathedral as the “First Building in the Land”, and will present unknown photographs from the Prague Castle Archive documenting the final construction works on the cathedral in the 19 th and 20 th centuries.

IV. The Crown without a King: the Story of the Bohemian Crown Jewels after 1918

Romanesque cellars of the Old Royal Palace The “Kingless Crown” exhibition will bring visitors to modern history, in the rooms where the Bohemian Crown Jewels were immured during WW II, presenting the story of this most precious national relic in the dramatic 20 th century. St. Vitus Cathedral

V. A Crown in your Palm: The Eternal Royal Coin

Rožmberk Palace The exhibition in Rožmberk Palace will take visitors to the period of Charles IV, presenting the “Prague Groschen” as an eternal coin of the Kingdom of Bohemia.

St. George Monastery The architecture of the period will be presented especially for children through an interactive exhibition.

THE CONCERTS TO CHARLES IV. The Concerts in Tribute to Charles IV. Open-air concert honoring Charles IV, “Night at Karlštejn” 11 May 2016, 5 pm Old Town Square, Prague 1

The Prague Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Petr Altrichter, in honor to the “Father of the Nation”, will pay gems of a symphonic repertory at an attractive open-air concert in the very heart of Prague. The different parts of the program will illustrate significant moments of the life of Charles IV: the tolling of the bells of the Tyn Cathedral and festive fanfares will symbolize the birth of the future Holy Roman Emperor on the Old Town Square at the “House at the Stone Bell”. Charles’s upbringing at the French Royal Court will be remembered by the Roman Carnival overture, by Hector Berlioz, while his first political and war experiences in Italy will be reflected by the Pines of Rome symphonic poem, by Ottorino Respighi. Other compositions will reminisce Charles’s exemplary administration of the Czech Kingdom, and his improvement of numerous European cities. The concert will be culminate with a suite from the “Night at Karlštejn” Czech musical, inspired by a charming story from the life of Charles IV that relates to his famous castle, Karlštejn.

Courtyard The Czech Philharmonic – the leading Czech orchestra – commemorates the 700th anniversary of the birth of Emperor Charles IV with a concert in the St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle. The intent is to celebrate the great ruler in an honorable, majestic,

and sensitive manner. Thus the conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, Jiří Bělohlávek, will conduct the eloquent Homage to Charles IV, Cantata for male choir, composition by Petr Eben, Praga, symphonic poem op. 26 by Josef Suk, and Te Deum by Antonín Dvořák.

NATIONAL GALLERY PRAGUE National Gallery in Prague 220 th Anniversary of the National Gallery in Prague. Generosity: On the Art of Giving 5 February – 3 July 2016 Location: Main exhibition on the second floor of Kinsky Palace, related displays and individual artworks in the permanent exhibitions of Kinsky Palace, Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia, Trade Fair Palace, Sternberg Palace, Salm Palace and Schwarzenberg Palace On February 5th, 2016, 220 years will have passed since the National Gallery’s historical moment of its founding. Unlike the past, when similar occasions were usually commemorated in a rather historical and retrospective way, this time, the National Gallery will celebrate the event with an exhibition on the politics of generosity, devoted to topics like togetherness, sharing, donating, patronizing and friendship in the arts. A series of shows prepared by the collections of the National Gallery will attempt to present a biography of the institution and its identity, which is based on and fundamentally linked to the principle of generosity. A multi-layered and diverse display will be placed in all of the buildings of the National Gallery. The topic of generosity will permeate through the whole Gallery, not only from a historical perspective, but also set into a linguistic, poetic and social context, providing an insight into the mechanics of the precious habit of giving and its consequences. Here, the museum is a gift, and the collection is perceived as a collective property. When perceiving the show as a whole, we will meet the personalities of the people who contributed significantly to the establishment and development of the institution and its collections. The main exhibition will be composed of six chapters: I. Generosity of the founding fathers, II. Institutional generosity as the foundation principle of the museum’s collections, III. Generosity of donors and benefactors, IV. Generosity of the world as a source of life, V. Love and compassion in philosophy and religion, VI. Love and friendship as conditions of human existence. Further, in order to build up a unified narrative body, the selection will be also incorporated into the permanent exhibitions of the five collections that the National Gallery consists of. Additionally, each of the six buildings will also host interventions and site-specific works of contemporary art created for this occasion. In order to contextualize the display within a contemporary perspective, artworks, installations and performances by Jiří Kovanda, Klára Kristalová, Matts Leiderstam, Yoshihiro Suda, Prinz Gholam, Edmund de Waal, Jaromír Novotný, Hiroshi Sugimoto and a number of others will also be included in the exhibition.

This significant exhibition will present the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the Czech King Charles IV as a unique figure of Europe’s political and cultural history; a pious, well-educated, single-minded and judicious ruler, who did not hesitate to use a wide range of diplomatic means. One of the typical features of Charles’ ruling concept was the programmatic use of arts and architecture to promote the imperial majesty. Charles IV has gone down in history as one of the most generous patrons of the arts, as well as one of the most often depicted rulers in mediaeval Europe’s history. The exhibition will be accompanied by a large multifarious program of activities in both venues, Prague and Nuremberg. The viewers will be able to see a number of exhibition projects in the partner museum institutions in Bohemia and Bavaria; they will be able to follow in Charles IV’s footsteps in the places linked with his life and admire the royal architecture and art in their original milieus.

The exhibition seeks to show Charles IV devoid of distorting layers of ideological prejudice, and offer to the public a multi-faceted portrait of the historical figure with his positive as well as negative qualities. Charles IV will be presented against the kaleidoscopic background of a broad contemporary cultural-historical 14th-century context. The admirable prosperity of arts and architecture of Charles IV will be set in this historical context with conspicuous overlaps to the present. How did his contemporaries perceive him? Where did he get the money for the spectacular and costly imperial presentation? How were the holy relics acquired and what was the role of arts in the service of his imperial policy? Who were the people who acted in the Emperor’s name and secured the support he needed?

Ai Weiwei: Zodiac Heads The Czech Republic will be one of the few places in Europe to exhibit the work (along with Denmark, Germany, Russia and Spain). By exhibiting the work in front of the Trade Fair Palace, the gallery will contribute to discussions about the role of art in Prague’s public space. That the Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads will be exhibited as part of the National Gallery’s 220th anniversary and that it will occupy the space in front of the Trade Fair Palace, an example of Czech modern architecture, makes this display a unique curatorial project.

6 February – 31 August 2016 Place: in front of the Trade Fair Palace The Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads by contemporary Chinese artist Ai Weiwei will be displayed as one of the projects accompanying the exhibition Generosity: On the Art of Giving, devoted to sharing, generosity and patronage, organized in celebration of the 220th anniversary of the National Gallery’s predecessor, the Picture Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friend of the Arts in Bohemia. Ai Weiwei’s Zodiac Heads is the first and long-awaited work by this acclaimed artist to be exhibited in the Czech Republic. The space in front of the Trade Fair Palace will house twelve bronze zodiac-animal heads, copies of sculptures designed for the Garden of Perfect Brightness (Yuanmingyuan) near Beijing, which were destroyed by foreign troops in 1860 during one of the Opium Wars. The 1.5-meter-wide heads are each attached to a three-meter-high post, forming a semicircle. The artist originally made them as “public sculptures”. The concept was extremely successful and Weiwei’s Zodiac Heads became one of the most famous works of contemporary Chinese art. It is perhaps the only contemporary Chinese artwork.

Cranach from all sides the Cranach workshop as a ingeniously organized unit based on precise working methods. The exhibition stands out for the significant element of active participation by visitors, who will have the chance to paint their own copy of Cranach’s work, using reproduction techniques of the artist’s period.

23 June 2016 – 22 January 2017 Sternberg Palace Paintings by Lucas Cranach and His Circle from the Collections of the National Gallery in Prague The exhibition “Cranach from All Sides” will present the German Renaissance painter and his circle not only via unique works from the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, but also via the most interesting results of research realized by a team of experts from the Cranach Digital Archive Düsseldorf, headed by Gunnar Heydenreich. The group of the Prague works linked with the artist’s name is extraordinarily heterogeneous and includes very attractive and popular scenes such as The Old Fool, Christ and the Adulteress and The Original Sin (Adam and Eve). The research has revealed many yet unknown facts about these and other works, as well as information about the technological process of the works and, especially their copies. The exhibition in the Sternberg Palace will introduce visitors to the most recent discoveries linked with the most precious works held by the National Gallery in Prague and also present

Newly discovered Karel Malich

The wall sculpture was forgotten soon after its installation. It was discovered thanks to the painstaking and continuous efforts of the Pilsen based association Křížky a vetřelci (Crosses and Intruders) that focuses on mapping objects from the normalization times in the Pilsen region.

8 February – 31 May 2016 Museum Kampa As its world premiere, Museum Kampa is exhibiting Karel Malich’s newly discovered large wall sculpture created for the cafeteria in the college dormitories in Pilsen during the period of radical re-evaluation of his views of the world. It is one of the most important architectural works of this artist as well as one of the most significant public wall sculptures of the former Czechoslovakia at the turn of the nineteen seventies and eighties.

The Pilsen wall sculpture is exhibited in connection with the Černobílá plastika (Black and White Relief) (1964–1965) that represented Malich at the International Exhibition of Sculpture from Twenty Nations, which took place at the Guggenheim Museum in New York (1967); the exhibition also contains selection of his current work from years 2010–2015. Gioachino Rossinï Premiered on 21 and 22 January 2016 The Estates Theatre One of the most frequently performed works of Gioachino Rossini, a master of the bel canto style, was premiered on 25 January 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome. The libretto, penned by Jacopo Ferretti, is based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale Cendrillon. Similarly to the other creators inspired by Perrault’s fable, Ferretti and Rossini interpret the story of Cinderella in their own way, presenting a broad scope of situations, ranging from the moving to the comical, as well as rewarding types of characters and splendid musical numbers, one of the most famous being Cinderella’s aria Nacqui all’affanno… Non più mesta, a staple of many a world-renowned diva. gular and intriguing adaptation is the production being undertaken by the acclaimed Hungarian stage director and actor Enikő Eszenyi. Bohuslav Martinů

Premiered on 24 and 25 March 2016 The National Theatre Bohuslav Martinů’s opera Juliette (The Key to Dreams) is closely linked to the National Theatre in Prague, which gave its premiere on 16 March 1938, conducted by Václav Talich and directed by Jindřich Honzl, both major Czech artists of the first half of the 20th century. The libretto, written by Martinů himself, in French, was based on the Surrealist author Georges Neveux’s play Juliette ou la Clé de songes, first performed at the Théâtre de l’Avenue in Paris in 1930. In the spring of 1936, Martinů plunged into writing the Czech libretto and composing the music for Juliette, and completed the opera the next January. The story takes place in the poetic and fantasy atmosphere of

As well as what is being prepared by Prague Castle Administration, an extensive accompanying programme is also being planned. The second year of the Chivalric Festivities will also be held in the spirit of Charles IV’s time. Visitors will also be able to walk in the footsteps of Charles IV during guided walks through the Castle grounds.

Prague Castle – Vladislav Hall From 15 to 29 May 2016 Prague Castle will celebrate the 700th anniversary of the Czech king and emperor Charles IV’s birth with seven major exhibition projects. The significance of this anniversary will be highlighted by the special exhibiting of the Czech Crown Jewels in the Vladislav Hall from 15 to 29 May 2016, which otherwise only happens when the president of the Republic is elected. The Crown of Saint Wenceslas created by Charles IV will as usual in the historic Gočár display case along with the orb and sceptre added to this set of coronation insignia during the reign of the Habsburgs. Entry to the exhibit will be free of charge.

WATER AT PRAGUE CASTLE AND HYACINTHS AND AMARYLLISES

Empire Glasshouse in the Royal Garden 4 – 13 March 2016, 10 am – 5:30 pm (last entrance at 5 pm) For the fourth time there will be an exhibition of the Early Spring at Prague Castle series, which will be held in the Empire Glasshouse in the Royal Garden. This time it is devoted to the topic of water, hyacinths and amaryllises. Visitors will see the benefits and beauty of the castle’s wells, fountains, ponds and streams. Also the mediaeval water pipes, Baroque tunnels in the walls and various historical objects such as drills, pumps, spouts, fire buckets, chamber pots and toilets that are so important for life. Items from Prague Castle’s collections will combine with the floral promenade prepared by the castle’s gardeners. It will consist of a flood of flowering bulbs: thousands of intoxicatingly fragrant hyacinths and large amaryllis (Hippeastrum) flowers in many varieties.

No Czech ruler but Charles IV has been more closely tied with the fate of Prague. This year, we are celebrating the 700 th anniversary of his birth. This giant of Czech and European history was born in 1316 as the eldest son to Elisabeth of Bohemia, the Czech royal heiress, and the King of Bohemia John, of the Luxembourg dynasty. During his reign, he turned Prague into a political and cultural center of Europe, as it was the principal seat of the Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. Charles also died in Prague and is buried in the St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle.

This extensive castle complex is the largest in Europe. When Charles returned to his native land in 1333, his paramount task was to build a new royal palace, as Prague Castle had suffered a devastating fire in 1303 that caused extensive damage to the Old Royal Palace, where the PĹ&#x2122;emyslid dynasty used to seat. He built it following a French pattern that had influenced him during his seven-year stay in France. Along with the New Royal Palace, Charles also founded the All Saints Chapter house, built to the pattern of the Saint-Chapelle in Paris. Together with his father John of Luxembourg, he laid the cornerstone to the St. Vitus Cathedral, the new seat of the Prague archbishops, and the final resting place of Czech kings.

For Charles IV, the most important place was the Prague Castle, the seat of the Kings of Bohemia.

In 1348, Charles founded the New Town, turning Prague into a true metropolis, and one of the largest cities in Europe. Outside the city Charles built or initiated the construction of numerous significant sanctuaries that we can admire to these days: the Church of Our Lady of Snow, the St. Catherine Monastery, the Na Slovanech (Emmaus) Monastery, the Assumption of Virgin Mary and Charles the Great church, and many others. On the slopes around the New Town, Charles ordered to plant extensive vineyards like GrĂŠbovka, which has been preserved in its original place.

Charles’s mother, Elisabeth, and his grandfather, the King of Bohemia Wenceslas II. We can also credit Charles with the beauty of the Royal Range, the popular “Stromovka” (Tree Park) today. Building Prague became Charles’s lifetime passion. When he died at the Prague Castle in 1378, a legend says that all Prague bells tolled by themselves to pay honor to the greatest of their patrons.

Charles didn’t neglect the Old Town of Prague, either, as is evident from the construction of the mighty Old Town Bridge Tower that secured this side of the Charles Bridge (called Stone Bridge at the time). On the Old Town Square, Charles’s main builder, Petr Parléř, started the construction of the Tyn temple. Close to this place, is the palatial House at the Stone Bell, once owned by the Přemyslid royal family. Some historians believe that this is the place where Charles IV was born. The Old Town livened up with student bustle in 1366 when Charles endowed the Prague Charles University, one of the oldest universities in Europe, founded in 1348, the Lazarus House, where the first campus was established.

As part of the celebrations of the 700th anniversary, Prague has prepared numerous events to commemorate Charles IV as its builder, and the city as the Prague of Charles IV – Praga Caroli. Exhibitions, concerts, historical recreation of events, entertainment of the period; all of these will enliven the locations linked to Charles IV that bear his legacy; there are more than 40 in Prague alone. St. George Convent

The St. George Convent was established in 973 by Prince Boleslav and his sister Mlada for the Benedictine order. It was dissolved in 1782, and reconstructed and newly opened in 1976. Open daily: 9 am to 5 pm (IV–X), 9 am–4 pm (XI–III)

St. Vitus Cathedral

This Gothic Cathedral, which was built over nearly six centuries, was finally completed in 1929. In the 10th century a rotunda originally stood in its place. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parléř, who also built the St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is adorned with frescoes and semi-precious stones; in the catacombs underneath there are tombs of Czech kings.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m2. The site of the castle was established in the 9th century, and in the 12th century the Romanesque palace was built. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the last reconstruction of the Royal Palace was carried out under the rule of the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, At that time (1497 to 1500) the famous Vladislav Hall was built in the late Gothic style. The castle was enlarged in the 16th century following the great fire in 1541. After World War I, the interior and gardens of the castle were redesigned by the architect J. Plečnik. The castle is the seat of the president of the republic and the historical and political centre of the city and the state. The changing of the guards takes place at Prague Castle every hour on the hour from 5:00 am to 10 pm. The guard changes at noon are accompanied by a solemn fanfare. See the map on page 44. Daliborka Tower

The fortified Daliborka Tower was built in 1496 by Benedikt Rejt as a part of the castle’s fortifications. It was converted into a jail until the end of the 18th century.

Mihulka Powder Tower

Loretto

Prague 1, Loretánské náměstí 7 Loretto was once a goal of pilgrims, with a copy of Santa Casa; it was built from 1626 to 1631. The Baroque Church of the Nativity of Our Lord was built in 1734–35. The front façade was rebuilt from 1720 to 1722 by K. I. Dienzenhofer. The tower houses 27 Loretto bells which play the melody of the Our Lady Chorus. The most valuable item is the liturgical treasury, with a diamond monstrance called Prague Sun; it weighs over 12 kg and is adorned with more than 6,000 diamonds. St. George Basilica

The Romanesque St. George Basilica was built in 920, close to the Benedictine monastery; it was reconstructed in the 10th and 12th centuries.

Royal Summer Palace (Belvedere)

This is the most remarkable Renaissance building in Prague. It was built from 1538–1552 following the design of Paolo della Stella, and completed in 1563 by the architect B. Wohlmut. Its garden contains the Singing Fountain, where drops of water

The Royal Garden was laid out in 1534 under the reign of Ferdinand I and refined under the rule of Rudolf II. The Ball Game Hall was once used as a barracks and is now used to house exhibitions. During the first phase, the Ledebour and Small Pálffy Gardens underwent reconstruction. These gardens were opened to the public in June 1995. The second phase – finished in August 2000 – covers the three remaining gardens (the Great Pálffy Garden was opened in 1997). The palace gardens on the southern slopes of the hill crowned with the Prague Castle complex consist of five historic gardens: the Ledebour Garden, the Small Pálffy Garden, the Great Pálffy Garden, the Kolowrat Garden and the Small Fürstenberg Garden. These gardens represent a unique historic complex which is one of most significant Baroque garden works in Europe. Due to the lack of maintenance, these beautiful and historically priceless objects reached a state of catastrophe, and were closed to the public in the seventies. It was not until 1989 that reconstruction commenced, led by the new owner – the State Preservation Institute. The reconstruction

It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many wellpreserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a four purpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is located, there used to be a vineyard and a utility garden in 1517. Ledebour Garden is a Baroque, terrace garden from the first third of the 18 century, in about 1787 styled most probably by I. J. Palliardi. In between the salla terrena and the opposite–side wall, flat with the staircase and the fountain with the statue of a giant, a parterre with a recently-built basin. Malostranské nám. 556/29 The construction of this church started in 1704 on the site of a small, older Gothic church. The frontispiece was finished in 1710 and the nave, with its wreath of chapels, was consecrated in 1711. This part was clearly built by Christopher Dienzenhofer. The sanctuary and the cupola were built in 1737–1752 based on Dienzenhofer’s design, and the structure was finished by A. Lurago between 1751 and 1756. The interior is an example of the high Baroque style; the decorations were created by Jan Lukáš Kracker. The Crucifixion (1646) in St. Barbara’s chapel and Christ’s Passion series (1670), all pictures by Karel Škréta, originally created for the Jesuit Profession House,

The Petřín Observation Tower

The construction of the Petřín observation tower was initiated by the Czech Tourist Club on the occasion of the Jubilee Land’s Exhibition. It is a scale model (1:5) of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed by Ing. František Prášil from the famous ČKD factory. Its construction started on 16 March 1891 and was finished on 20th August of the same year. The tower is located at an altitude of 324 m above sea level and is 60 m tall. It

form the most significant part of the interior decoration. Most of the sculptures in the church are works by I. F. Platzer. The oldest sculpture in the church is Our Lady of Foyen on the left altar, brought by the Jesuits from Belgium in 1629. The tower of the church (the baroque belfry) actually never was an integral part of the church as it was an independent property owned by the Lesser Town of Prague. It served as the bell- and observation-tower. The Petřín hill funicular railway

After its renewal in 1985, the Petřín hill funicular railway (lanovka) was integrated into Prague’s public transportation system. You may transfer onto it at the Újezd tram stop – it takes you up to Nebozízek and Petřín. To ride the funicular railway, you need a valid Prague transportation ticket which is good for transfers. CharlesBridge (Karlůvmost) The Charles Bridge was built in 1357 by Charles IV. It is the oldest bridge in Prague, and the work was carried out by Petr Parléř. 30 baroque statues and the groups of statues are mostly from the 18th century. The wellknown are works of M. B. Braun and F. M. Brokof. It is 520 m long and 10 m wide. The construction consists of 16 arches. The bridge was fortified at both its ends by towers.

Lesser-Town Bridge Towers

Old-Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí)

Church of Our Lady before Týn

The historical centre of the town, the place of the most significant events, a unique complex of architectural and historic memories. In the middle there is a monument of Master John Huss by Ladislav Šaloun.

After St. Vitus Cathedral it is the most remarkable Prague Gothic church with Baroque interior. In the church there is the tomb of Danish astrologer Tycho Brahe. Open: ❷–❻ 10 am–1 pm and 3 pm–5 pm ❼ 10:30 am–noon. Visits of groups are possible with reservations. Admission: 25 CZK

The Old-Town Hall with the Astronomical Clock (horologe)

House At the Stone Bell

The Town Hall was built in 1338, in 1364 adjoining the tower with the chapel, in 1470 the Town Hall was reshaped in the late Gothic style. The horologe (orloj) is from the beginning of the 15th century; in the upper part every hour (9 am–11 pm) the procession of the 12 apostles in succession appears at the window, in the lower part is a copy of 12 internal medallions with the signs of the zodiac by Josef Mánes.

The most precious burgess house of medieaval age, originally Romanesque, whose rare Gothic form and two-storey front face of 14th century was renovated in 1988. Currently it serves as an exhibition hall (City Gallery Prague). Open: ❷–❻ 10 am–8 pm. Admission: 120 CZK

The National Theatre

New Town City Hall

Prague 1, Národní 2 Neo-Renaissance building of 1868 to 1881 built according to plans of J. Zítek. In 1881 the finished theatre burnt, and was reconstructed by architect Josef Schulz in 1883.

Prague 2, Karlovo náměstí 23 A complex of Gothic buildings from the turn of the 14th and the 15th centuries, reconstructed in the Renaissance style during the years 1520–1526. They include a tower with the Holy Virgin Chapel, two Gothic Halls and a Renaissance Hall. Here was the seat of the Administration Offices of the New Town of Prague from 1377 to 1784. The defenestration of Catholic city councellors by Prague Hussites occurred here on July 30, 1419. The Tower is open for tourists daily except Mondays from 10 am–6 pm (May – September), halls can be visited while exhibitions are held there. Daily visits, except Mon., from 10 am to 6 pm (IV–XI). Emmaus

Prague 2, Vyšehradská 49 The Emmaus Monastery was founded by Charles IV in 1347 for Slavonic Benedictines with the Church of Our Lady and Slavonic patrons. 1260. Its importance grew with the founding of “Slavin”, the final resting-place of the most significant personalities of the Czech nation. Slavín was built between 1889 and 1893. Above the central memorial at Slavín is a sarcophagus with an allegorical winged statue the Genius Patriae. The motto of the Slavín cemetery is engraved above the name plates: Though dead, they still speak. To date, more than 600 personalities from the world of Czech culture and education are buried here. They include, for example, the composers Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák, the painter Alfons Mucha, the opera singer Ema Destinnová, the writer Karel Čapek, the Nobel Prize winner Jaroslav Heyrovský and many others. Buses link the capital city not only with individual parts of the Czech Republic but also with all of Europe. Regular lines run to all the significant places in the European Union as well as outside of it. The most important bus depot is the Florence Central Bus Station, which is located in the very centre of the city.

The tickets are available at some Underground stations, at Transport Inquiries, at shops selling newspapers and cigarettes (with inscription Tabák), at some groceries, at the reception desks, at some travel services, at yellow vending machines by the transport means stations. All lines of the underground operate from 5.00 am till midnight. Tram and bus timetables are placed at all stops. Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340–1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted. (see p. 96–97)

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360.

Třebíč is a picturesque town with rich history and a lot of valuable architectural monuments. The most remarkable have been included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List – the St. Procopius Basilica and the Jewish Quarter with the Jewish Cemetery.

Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre,you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. Other places worth a visit are the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, with a lookout tower and the exhibition Angels on the Hill, and the former Bishop’s Gymnasium, which today houses a successfully restored museum. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest.

The Basilica, built in the Romanesque style with some early Gothic features, is one of the treasures of medieval architecture. The most valuable part of the Basilica is the crypt. The Jewish Quarter is the only evidence of Jewish culture outside the territory of Israel included in the UNESCO list and it’s a unique complex of 123 buildings, among them the Front and Rear Synagogue, and the Seligmann Bauer’s House, with an exhibition of a typical Jewish household.

ONEDAYTRIPSFROMPRAGUE ARCHITECTURE IN BRNO

TELČ Telč is one of the most sought-after cultural destinations, where you can pleasantly spend your free time. You can visit historical landmarks and the Telč undergrounds, now open to the public, located below most of the houses on the Zacharias of Hradec square and part of the chateau complex. You can also visit festivals, concerts, exhibitions at the city gallery, or a historical festival organized every year, moderated by the historical personalities Zacharias of Hradec, and Katerina of Wallenstein.

From Adlof Loose, who was born here, through Bohuslav Fuchs or Ernest Wiesner, to the German Ludwig Miese van der Rohe, the designer of the world famous Villa Tugendhat, a masterpiece of Functionalism from 1930, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The residential and utility rooms and the beautiful garden of this unique house, with its flowing space, are open to the public, and the villa offers a fantastic view to the city.

Together with the chateau, the city square constitutes a unique architectonic complex, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

Part of the undergrounds and underground corridors oriented toward the square were opened to the public in September 2014. Visitors can peek in the Telč undergrounds in their “raw” condition that continues along the entire square. They can also enter the renovated rooms, where modern projection technology present the city of Telč and its surroundings, as well important points of the history of its development.

The towns of Lednice and Valtice are located in the heart of the Lednice-Valtice Complex, which in 1996 was included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites. They offer a lot of cultural and sports activities. The surroundings are criss-crossed with cycling trails, where you can admire the uniqueness, charm and history of the region. Lednice is a popular tourist destination thanks to its fairy-tale château and the surrounding landscape. Though, in recent years, also thanks to its successfully developing spas. The main therapeutic source are the mineral waters rich in iodine-bromide sourced from a nearby well. Thanks to its iodine contents, its quality is one of the best of its type in Europe. In 2009, the Lednice Spas were granted the status of therapeutic spa.

The Kroměříž Flower Garden ranks among the most significant gardening masterpieces worldwide, these days being practically the only representation of such kind in Europe.The Flower garden has two main parts – the flower bank with shaped walls and broderiebeds, and the garden nursery with the Strawberry Hills. Every year, the beds in front of the colonnade in the flower bank are planted with twenty thousand summerannuals, grown in greenhouses and hot-beds directly in the Flower Garden.

There are fountains among the colourful flowerbeds and green labyrinths, and the very centre of the garden is dominated by a rotunda with unique artistic decorations and a unique Foucault pendulum. One of the most attractive parts of the Flower garden is a 244-metre-long colonnade with statues of ancient gods and other historical figures of antiquity. The construction according to the design by Giovanni PietroTencalla was completed in 1671.

BAROQUE PEARL ON GREEN HILL

Olomouc is one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe, the pearl of Moravia, and the most beautiful city in the Czech Republic and a “hidden treasure of Europe”, according Lonely Planet. There you can find breathtaking baroque churches, beautiful palaces, charming stone-paved lanes, flowers and green areas. Next to Prague, it is the city with the highest concentration of marvelous landmarks in the Czech Republic. Olomouc also boasts several European rarities, the largest baroque statuary – the Holy Trinity Column, a significant UNESCO landmark. Olomouc is the site of an ancient university, an archbishopric, a philharmonic orchestra, numerous museums, theaters, and clubs, as well as the location of countless interesting culture events and festival.

Žďár nad Sázavou lies in the beautiful countryside of the Žďárské vrchy Protected Area. The village emerged along the Cistercian Monastery founded in 1252, and was promoted to city in 1607. Today’s dynamic city is a modern center of the region, and – thanks of the magnificent nearby UNESCO landmark – an ever more popular tourist destination, and a gateway to the most beautiful part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands Region. The St. Johannus Nepomuceni pilgrimage church on Green Hill (Zelená hora) is a state-of-the-art work in the Bohemian baroque Gothic. Its extraordinary value was rewarded with its listing in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. It was built between 1719 and 1722 by one of the greatest Bohemian baroque architects, Jan Blažej Santini Aichel. The ambit surrounding the temple was built on a decagonal pattern while the temple itself has the shape of a pentagram. The entire complex has five entrances, inside the temple there are five chapels and five altars. On top of the cupola there is a big tongue, the attribute of St. Johannus Nepomuceni. The entire structure combines two architectonic styles: Gothic and baroque. The main altar features a saint, standing on a globe, optically rising up. On the globe you can find the five octagonal Cistercian stars, representing the five continents where Christianity has spread.

Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady in Sedlec

KUTNÁHORA – UNESCO family member for 21 years Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, were included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city.

“Hrádek” (Little Castle), one of the most famous burghers’ houses in Kutná Hora, houses today the Czech Museum of Silver with exhibitions on silver mining. The museum regularly appears on leading positions of the TripAdvisor travelers’ surveys. Once again, it won the Certificate of Excellence in 2015. The museum also offers a tour through an original medieval silver mine, the so-called St. George drift. Visitors are equipped with medieval mining gear, a helmet and torch. The drift is 35 meters deep, and 250 meters long. During the tour, visitors also pass by rooms filled with crystal clear water. Art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral in the Jesuit college.

The City of Český Krumlov has been writing its history for more than 700 years. Each century left its unique imprint on the city’s face. Thus, this is a city that boasts great architectural beauty and a magical atmosphere. Under the reign of the Rožmberks the city flourished and dressed itself in a new Renaissance attire. Since then a palatial tower dominates the chateau, the courtyards are decorated with murals by Italian artists, and scratch work facades decorate numerous houses in the city.

The mysterious corners of the Medieval undergrounds and attics have been opened to visitors in the Český Krumlov monasteries since 2015. An extensive complex of three monasteries will present the life and arts of the monasteries, together with artisan workshops and inter-active tours.

Another period in the story of the city is marked by the Baroque. The aristocratic love of theatre, music, and creative arts during the period gave birth to a unique chateau theatre, which resounds with tones of baroque operas in their original staging. You can admire the baroque beauty of the chateau in its rooms and the garden.

In 1992, another significant year in the history of the city, Český Krumlov was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. The contemporary city pulsates with colourful life. Krumlov resounds with music of various genres, and concerts feature music stars such as Placido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Jonas Kaufmann, Anna Netrebko. And the story of the city continues…

Local noblemen were gourmets, too; with good food they enjoyed good local beer. The brewery that bears the name of the aristocratic family of Eggenberg has been brewing beer to this day. The last aristocratic family who influenced the shape of the chateau and the city were the family of Schwarzenberg. Ever since then, the image of the local landmarks hasn’t significantly changed.

Egon Schiele, a controversial painter, was enchanted by the charms of the city. Works such as “Dead City” and “City on the Blue River” were created here. We can take a look at the city through the eyes of the renowned Expressionist in the local Egon Schiele Art Centrum. THE BATTLE THAT CHANGED EUROPE The 150th anniversary of the Prussian –Austrian war 1866

army was the modern Prussian armament – the Dreys system rifle. Austrian weapons, on the other hand, had a longer gun-range, and were more precise. The defeat couldn’t be adverted even by the elite Austrian artillery and its self-sacrifice during the Austrian army is retreat. The main reason of the Prussian victory was better tactics, the way they fought, and the quality of the command.

In the fields near the city of Hradec Králové, one of the largest battles of the 19th century took place, on 3 July, 1866. On a hill near Chlum, 436 thousand Austrian and Prussian soldiers clashed in a decisive battle to be the leading power of the “German Union”. The result was a total defeat of the Austrian army that allowed Prussian chancellor Otto von Bismarck to establish the unified German Empire. The battle claimed the lives of 16 thousand soldiers and 11 thousand horses.

What to visit at the Chlum battlefield? In the Chlum central battlefield you can visit the 1866 Battle Memorial, with the new War of 1866 Museum, with exhibitions of weapons and an interactive program. The best way to view the entire battlefield is from the Chlum watchtower. Close to the museum you can find the “Battery of the Dead” Memorial for the heroic Austrian artillery, while more to the south is the “Ossarium”, a mausoleum with relics of fallen soldiers. In the woods nearby you can walk down the “Alley of the Dead” (4,600 fallen) lined with memorials commemorating the fierce combats that took place there. From the Chlum hill you can walk down through the “Hollow of the Dead” (6,600 fallen), to the monumental Deutschmeister Memorial.

The Battle of Hradec Králové was preceded by numerous smaller battles: near the cities of Náchod (27 June, 1866), Jičín (29 June 1866), Trutnov (27 June, 1866), Česká Skalice (28 June, 1866), and Dvůr Králové nad Labem (29 June, 1866). Except for the battle of Trutnov, the Austrian forces were defeated in all the clashes. The total Austrian losses during this seven-week conflict reached 76 thousand men, while the victorious Prussians lost “only” 17 thousand. The often alleged reasons of the defeat of the Austrian

The locations of the most important combats and other places in the region, including the battlefields of Náchod, Turnov, and Jičín, are connected by perfectly marked educational trails. Demonstrations of the military life of the period can be seen in the Josefov Historical Fortress, preserved unchanged to these days.
