DEAR VISITORS! In 2016, Europe, along with the Czech Republic, is celebrating the 700 th anniversary of the birth of the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia Charles IV; a most significant personality, as reflected by the way Czechs refer to him: the Father of the Country (Pater Patriae). The celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV are taking place in Prague, where cultural and academic institutions have organized numerous exhibitions, while other events will be held all over the Czech Republic, where this admirable personality and his period have left their trace. The National Heritage Institute, the guarantor of the country’s heritage preservation and administrator of more than 100 sites, including castles and chateaux, has joined the celebrations of the King of Bohemia from the dynasty of Luxembourgs with its project “The Year of the Luxembourgs”, which commemorates the scope and significance of Charles’s activities, and his personal ideals: faith, the arts, diplomacy, construction, military, women, and travels in Europe. The Karlštejn Treasure – Culture at the Emperor’s Courtyard is the main feature of the project, at Charles’s Karlštejn castle. It presents items used in the everyday life of the ruler: utensils, fashion accessories and vessels for aromatic herbs and balms. Their use is illustrated in illuminations in the Grandes Chroniques de France, kept in the Bibliothéque nationale in Paris. The Descendants of St. George exhibition at the chateau in Jindrˇichu ˚v Hradec, in South Bohemia, is dedicated to a significant set of Gothic murals

depicting the era of John of Luxembourg, the father of Charles IV. A new exhibition, “The Lion and The Eagle – the Moravian Luxembourgs and Their Castle”, has been prepared by the National Heritage Institute at the Veverˇí castle, in South Moravia. This glorious era of Czech and Moravian history, the everyday life of the Luxembourg period, its court culture, and intensive contacts between the Luxembourgs and other European ruling dynasties are celebrated with exhibitions and cultural events at almost thirty other castles, chateaux, and monasteries. The Year of the Luxembourgs will culminate on the last Saturday of August, with a grandiose “Night at Castles and Chateaux”, at dozens of Czech and Moravian landmarks. On behalf of my colleagues, who have prepared the “Year of the Luxembourgs”, I cordially invite you to our exhibitions. Ing. arch. Praga Caroli

No Czech ruler has been more closely tied with the fate of Prague than Charles IV. This year, we are celebrating the 700 th anniversary of his birth. This giant of Czech and European history was born in 1316 as the eldest son to Elisabeth of Bohemia, the Czech royal heiress, and the King of Bohemia John, of the Luxembourg dynasty. During his reign, he turned Prague into an European a political and cultural center, as it was the main seat of the Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. Charles also died in Prague and is buried in the St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle.

the new seat of the Prague archbishops, and the final resting place of Czech kings. In 1348, Charles founded the New Town, turning Prague into a true metropolis, and one of the largest cities in Europe. Outside the city Charles built or initiated the construction of numerous significant sanctuaries that we can admire to these days. Charles didn’t neglect the Old Town of Prague, either, as is evident from the construction of the mighty Old Town Bridge Tower that secured this side of the Charles Bridge (called Stone Bridge at the time). On the Old Town Square, Charles’s main builder, Petr Parléř, started the construction of the Tyn temple. The Old Town livened up with student bustle in 1348 when Charles endowed the Prague Charles University, one of the oldest in Europe. Building Prague became Charles’s lifetime passion.

For Charles IV, the most important place was the Prague Castle, the seat of the Kings of Bohemia. This extensive castle complex is the largest of its kind in Europe. He built it following a French pattern that had influenced him during his seven-year stay in France. Together with his father John of Luxembourg, he laid the cornerstone to the St. Vitus Cathedral,

As part of the celebrations of the 700 th anniversary, Prague has prepared numerous events to commemorate the city as the Prague of Charles IV – Praga Caroli. Exhibitions, concerts, historical recreation of events, entertainment of the period; all of these will enliven the locations linked to Charles IV that bear his legacy; there are more than 40 in Prague alone. A complete list of events related to the 700 th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV can be found at

and private collections. Artistic ventures of Charles IV and members of his imperial court, which were undertaken in Prague, Nuremberg, Aachen, Frankfurt am Main or in any other artistic centre of the Holy Roman Empire will be displayed alongside their inspirational models of Byzantine, Italian or French origin.

15 May – 25 September 2016 Waldstein Riding School Daily except Monday 10 am–6 pm The organizers of the exhibition are the National Gallery in Prague and Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte, in cooperation with Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas an der Universität Leipzig.

Charles IV, votive fragment

This significant exhibition will present the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the Czech King Charles IV as a unique figure of Europe’s political and cultural history; a pious, well-educated, single-minded and judicious ruler, who did not hesitate to use a wide range of diplomatic means. One of the typical features of Charles’ ruling concept was the programmatic use of arts and architecture to promote the imperial majesty. Charles IV has gone down in history as one of the most generous patrons of the arts, as well as one of the most often depicted rulers in mediaeval Europe’s history. Antependium with Jesus and Throne of Devine Mercy

The exhibition will be accompanied by a large multifarious program of activities in both venues, Prague and Nuremberg. The viewers will be able to see a number of exhibition projects in the partner museum institutions in Bohemia and Bavaria; they will be able to follow in Charles IV’s footsteps in the places linked with his life and admire the royal architecture and art in their original milieus.

The exhibition seeks to show Charles IV devoid of distorting layers of ideological prejudice, and offer to the public a multi-faceted portrait of the historical figure with his positive as well as negative qualities. Charles IV will be presented against the kaleidoscopic background of a broad contemporary cultural-historical 14th-century context. The admirable prosperity of arts and architecture of Charles IV will be set in this historical context with conspicuous overlaps to the present. How did his contemporaries perceive him? Where did he get the money for the spectacular and costly imperial presentation? How were the holy relics acquired and what was the role of arts in the service of his imperial policy? Who were the people who acted in the Emperor’s name and secured the support he needed?

The exhibition seeks answers to such questions through 170 exhibits of all disciplines in art, culturalhistorical documents loaned by more than a hundred prestigious European and U.S. museums, churches

The group of the Prague works linked with the artist’s name is extraordinarily heterogeneous and includes very attractive and popular scenes such as The Old Fool, Christ and the Adulteress and The Original Sin (Adam and Eve). The research has revealed many yet unknown facts about these and other works, as well as information about their technological process and, especially their copies. 16 September 2016 – 15 January 2017 Kinsky Palace Open daily except Monday, 10 am–6 pm Henri Rousseau, known as the Customs Officer (1844–1910), is one of the most important artists of the turn of the 19 th and 20 th centuries. His works attracted not only intellectuals like Guillaume Apollinaire and collectors such as Wilhelm von Uhde, but also many artists. In his paintings he anticipated or resolved similar problems to Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Frida Kahlo, etc. He was highlighted as a source of inspiration in particular by the group known as Der Blaue Reiter, headed by Vassily Kandinsky. This exhibition has been realised in cooperation with the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, on the basis of a concept prepared by Gabriella Belli (Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia) and Guy Cogeval (Musée d’Orsay). The authors place Rousseau in the context of other, no less famous artists and try to trace stimuli linked with archaism, classicism and his original vision of realism. The National Gallery in Prague will present Henri Rousseau in the autumn of 2016, after the closing of the exhibition in the Musée d’Orsay. The exhibition at the National Technical Museum in Prague brings visitors right to a construction site of the mid-14 th century, showing the erection of the fortification of the New Town of Prague, the building technology of the period, the trades and the work with great Gothic construction machines. The fortification wall of the New Town was 3.5 kilometers long and was built in 23 months. The exhibition hall presents an erected part of the structure, built with original technology and materials of the period. You can follow the whole construction process and its individual phases: quarrying the stone, its processing and transportation, and the erection of the wall itself. All the building crafts are documented, as well as the life of the carpenters, stonecutters, masons and smiths, and their tools. The construction boom of the period of Charles IV is also presented with fragments from other sites such as vault bolts from the St. Vitus Cathedral with its original polychromic, a fragment of a medieval gate from the Bečov castle in West Bohemia, and part of a sandstone window from Karlštejn. Functional replicas of great medieval construction machines like a wooden crane, and rammer for piling posts are exhibited in front of the museum. Everybody can see how sophisticated and still simple they were. (Open daily, closed on Mondays)

NATIONAL THEATRE National Theatre Roméo et Juliette Charles Gounod

Premiered on 21 and 23 April 2016 State Opera Prague In his youth, the French composer Charles Gounod (1818–1893) said that “one can only make a successful musical career by composing operas”. Of the 13 operas he wrote, two went on to gain global recognition: Faust and Roméo et Juliette. Since its premiere at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris, on 27 April, 1867, Gounod’s setting of the immortal story of the Verona lovers has enjoyed ever-increasing popularity. The librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré did not draw upon Shakespeare’s feted tragedy directly, but its French adaptation by the poet Gérard de Nerval. Owing to Czech composer Bedřich Smetana, a great

champion of Gounod’s music, Roméo et Juliette got to Prague merely two years after its world premiere. The most recent production this opera was seen on the stage of National Theatre Prague in 2000. The new production at the State Opera will be staged by the Slovak director and performance artist Sláva Daubnerová. Staging in Frech original.

Andrea Chénier

Giordano the story of the French poet André Chénier, one of the last victims of Robespierre’s Reign of Terror, in 1794. Giordano’s opera depicts the drama of a love triangle, featuring the young aristocrat Maddalena, the servant Gérard and the poet Chénier. The new production is conducted by the Artistic Director of the National Theatre Opera, Petr Kofroň, and directed by Michal Dočekal, starring Rafael Alvarez, Anda-Louise Bogza and Hector Sandoval.

Umberto Giordano Premiered on 5 and 6 May 2016 The National Theatre A gem of Italian verismo opera, Giordano’s Andrea Chénier was presented at the National Theatre in Prague, in 1897, a mere year after its world premiere at La Scala in Milan. Owing to the torrential dramatic music, as well as the atmosphere of the story set in the time of the French Revolution, it is one of the pinnacles of the period’s opera. The style of Andrea Chénier is markedly Italian, with its sound colour and melody akin to that of Puccini and the forcibility of the crowd scenes reminiscent of Verdi’s late operas. Also bearing witness to its being close to Puccini is the librettist, Luigi Illica, the author of the texts for La bohéme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly, who adapted for

Elektra

at the National Theatre, on 25 April, 1910, in a Czech translation and under the baton of Karel Kovařovic. Strauss himself conducted the work’s seventh performance at the National, on 12 June, 1910. Elektra was most recently performed at the National Theatre in a concert version on 3 and 6 June, 1995, under the baton of Jiří Kout and featuring Eva Marton in the title role. The renowned English director Keith Warner has been invited to stage the new production at the State Opera, who assigned the title role to singer Susan Bullock.

Richard Strauss Premiered on 10 and 14 June 2016 State Opera Prague With Elektra, Strauss launched his collaboration with the librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874–1929), with whom he formed the second-most famous creative duo in opera history, after Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte. In the wake of Salome, the mythic story taking place in the aftermath of the Trojan War there is another drama of morally disrupted characters, with even more intensified expressionist passions, imposing upon the singers the technically and physiologically challenging task of bearing up to the extensive orchestra, made up of 115 instrumentalists. The world premiere of Elektra was on 25 January, 1909, at the Hofoper in Dresden. The Czech premiere took place

The store specializes in Belgian chocolate, hand-made by the best chocolatiers from the chocolate capital, Bruges, in Belgium. The selection is now also supplemented with a section of Belgian beer specialties. Besides chocolate, the store produces the so-called “Rock Candy”. The store has tables prepared for the manufacture of this treat, so you can see the process, which dates back more than 400 years. The store is joined to the ChocoStory chocolate museum – a member of an international network of museums with branches in Bruges, Paris, and Mexico. In the museum you can dive into the 3,000-year-old history of chocolate. You can learn when, where, and who used it for the first time, who brought it to Europe, how it spread, and how it is made today. You can also learn that chocolate is good for your health, and remember the good old times over a collection of chocolate wraps. In the showroom, our chocolatiers will show how pralines are made; and you can also taste them or to try the work with the chocolate yourselves in one of the workshops. Along with that you can see the largest chocolate cascade in the Czech Republic. In Celetná 10, you can dive into the fabulous world of chocolate and candy with all your senses.

It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many wellpreserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a four purpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is located, there used to be a vineyard and a utility garden in 1517. KONĚPRUSY CAVES

267 18 Karlštejn Tel.: +420 311 681 617 e-mail: karlstejn@npu.cz

www.hradkarlstejn.cz

The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.”

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360. ONEDAYTRIPSFROMPRAGUE KUTNÁ HORA

ČESKÝ KRUMLOV … a treasure trove full of history and arts Český Krumlov has been spinning its story for over 700 years, and each century has added a unique trait into its features. The result is a picturesque town proud of its architectural beauty and magical atmosphere.

Český Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a lively, cosmopolitan town with a unique atmosphere surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Dominated by a Castle stretching over the meandering Vltava River, Český Krumlov’s narrow cobblestone streets wind along romantic nooks between patrician houses, where you’ll find attractive exhibits of world-renown artists, music festivals, concerts, and theatre performances. The cosy inns, coffee shops, and ancient taverns entertain a diverse international crowd.

Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340–1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted. (see p. 92–93)

KUTNÁHORA – UNESCO family member for 21 years Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city. PÍSEK – the poetic beauty on the river Otava We invite you to a city in the northern part of South Bohemia, with a population of 30 thousand, about 100 kilometers from Prague. Písek boasts the title “The best city to live in the Czech Republic”, and it is popular among tourists who enjoy high quality services, numerous places of interest and activities. A Stone Bridge spans the river Otava whose auriferous sand gave the city its name (sand = písek), and it is the oldest structure of its kind in the country. The early-Gothic Royal Castle is another landmark reminiscing the time when Písek was founded (1243), and that now houses the local Prácheň Regional Museum. The deanery Church of the Birth of Virgin Mary, with its 72-meter-high tower, dominates the city. Both the church and the tower are open for visitors. The recent investments in the revitalization of the historical center of Písek are evident at every step. On a groomed promenade on the banks of the Otava, along the fortification walls, is the original mill turned into the Municipal Electric Power Plant that today houses the museum of lighting. You can have a rest in a cozy park in the former

castle moat. Behind the baroque Town Hall, on one of the courtyards, you can find a former Malthouse, which after costly renovations has been turned into a center of illustrations for children and a playful gallery, as well as the Tourist information center and an exhibition on malting. Písek offers pleasant cafes and restaurants, as well as numerous events like the City Festival (10 – 12 June 2016), the Summer Festival (16 July 2016), and the Folklore Festival (17 – 21 August 2016). Písecké hory (Písek Hills), next to the city’s eastern outskirts, offer excellent conditions for walks, longer hikes and cycling tours. You can learn about natural places of interest and enjoy views of the South-Bohemian countryside full of fishponds and the foothills of the Šumava mountain range. Fans of more nostalgic traveling can take a somewhat more time demanding ride on a train. A historical motor train goes to Písek throughout summer, on Sundays.

BECHYNĚ A romantic pearl of South Bohemia Discover the beauties of the picturesque city of Bechyně, situated on the confluence of the rivers Lužnice and Smutná, in the northernmost part of South Bohemia, near Tábor. Bechyně offers a wide selection of experiences for tourists. History lovers cannot miss the Bechyně chateau, whose origins date back to the 13th century, and was the seat of numerous important aristocratic families. Similarly, the Franciscan Monastery, one of the most precious late-medieval architectonic landmarks, draws the attention thanks to its location on a rock above the river Lužnice, being also a pilgrimage site. You can also visit several museums: the City Museum that narrates the history of Bechyně, from the prehistory to the present, or the Museum of Tourism, with an interactive map of watch towers in the Czech Republic. Those who prefer strolls in the outdoors can choose from many hiking and cycling trails. One of the most visited destinations is the valley of the river Lužnice, at the feet of Bechyně, where a rock massif along the river creates especially romantic locations. A tourist trail named Bechyně Views goes through the city, taking you to one of its highlights: the bridge called “The Rainbow” (a national cultural landmark from the 1920s). Bechyně also offers relax. The Bechyně Spa, one of the oldest in the Czech Republic, offers therapies for

the musculoskeletal system, using the local peat as its main healing ingredient. The complex offers a wide selection both traditional and state-of-theart therapeutic procedures. The Bechyně Region is closely tied with the manufacturing of ceramics. The first Czech school of ceramics was founded in 1884. The Secondary School of Decorative Arts today teaches disciplines like ceramics, and industrial and graphic design. The city has several workshops where you can find interesting, original products. The Bechyně subdivision of the Aleš South-Bohemian Gallery, in the former chateau brewery, specializes in Czech and international modern ceramics art. In the quiet environment of the nearby Černice Range, you can find the oldest nine-hole golf course in South Bohemia. It is used both by individuals and groups led by trainers, and it includes a driving range, and putting and chipping greens. There is another alternative for sports activities: horse-back riding offered by farms and riding clubs in Sudoměřice and Staré Sedlo. Thanks to the river Lužnice, Bechyně is closely tied to water sports and angling. The banks of the river are often visited by rock climbers. Via ferrata class D/E was built on a rock wall above the river, in 2014. Add color to your stay in Bechyně with nostalgic rides on the “Elinka” electric train, built by František Křižík, in 1903. The Bechyně railroad was the very first in Central Europe built originally as an electrified track. Come and enjoy a ride on the oldest electric railroad from Tábor to Bechyně, on 4 and 18 June, 2, 16 and 30 July, and 13 and 28 August. After a demanding program, you can reward yourself with a culinary experience at local restaurants, where they prepare meals from local, seasonal, and always fresh ingredients. You can come to Bechyně for a rich cultural program, too: 9 July – Theater on the Grass (a theatrical ensembles overview), and Raft Races on the river Lužnice 30 July – Scooter Races and Ceramics Fair (a fun race, music, and a fair on the square) 7 August – Brass Music Festival 12 – 14 August – Bechyně Touches (a traditional pilgrimage, concerts, arts and crafts fair) 27 November – Advent Fair (demonstrations of folklore arts) E-mail: infocentrum@kulturnidum.cz

OLOMOUC a hidden gem of Europe

Olomouc, the “Pearl of Moravia”, has been Moravia’s spiritual centre for centuries. According to Lonely Planet, it is one of the most beautiful Central-European cities, and a “hidden gem of Europe”. What is Olomouc like? Both domestic and foreign visitors use similar words: it is a beautiful, historical and charming city with architectonic landmarks from all eras on a small area, and not crowded with tourists. Have a stroll through the squares and streets in a city that is one of the oldest in the country, and that, thanks to bishops, monasteries, and a university, has been a cradle of culture and education for centuries. Just open your eyes, feel, and listen. The mighty St. Wenceslas Cathedral, the three fabulous domes on the Baroque St. Michael Church, the elegant slim tower of the Town Hall, and the robust Gothic St. Maurice Church. These are the crowns of the historical centre of this enchanting city. The complex set of local landmarks is dominated by the largest group of sculptures in Central Europe: the 32 m tall Holy Trinity Column, included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 2000. You do not have to just walk from one landmark to one another; just sit down in any of the cafes, pastry shops or micro-breweries. Try the famous local specialty: a strongly aromatic cheese, known as “Olomoucké tvarůžky”, produced in the city and its vicinity since the 15 th century. You do not have to stick to the guide-book, you can’t get lost. And if you are a little tired from visiting the Olomouc palaces, churches, sculptures, and fountains, walk through the medieval fortification walls into the green parks that surround the historical center, where you can meet mothers with strollers and freeminded students from the local, ancient university, who are studying for the next exams, but also looking forward to the evening fun in some of the many local clubs. You will also pass joggers training for the very popular Olomouc half-marathon. In Olomouc, everybody is a little bit in motion, and still relaxed. Come and see for yourself what Olomouc is like…
