BAROQUE CZECH REPUBLIC – – THROUGH ALL YOUR SENSES The Baroque is a phenomenon. This significant architectonic style shaped the face of the Czech countryside in a way that can be found in only a few places in the world. Baroque ruled the landscape and endlessly played with its dimensions, perspectives, vistas, and optical illusions. Grandiose churches, monasteries and palaces were built in Baroque. This artistic style also entered the Czech villages. It is a symbol of the Czech countryside, admired by tourists from all over the world every year. There is no other historical era that so much attempted to change the face of the world, turning it toward God. In the countryside, faith was expressed by numerous crosses, Calvarias, shrines, chapels, and pilgrimage churches, while temples glittering with gold grew in the cities; Plague and St. Mary Pillars thankfully pointed to the skies. Secular structures grew at the same place from flamboyant châteaux and palaces over burghers’ houses, to beautiful gardens and allegoric fountains. In the spirit of Baroque, farmers and regular people also built houses decorated with arches and curves. Arts in the Baroque period literally flooded the country. Even in the most remote regions we can find amazing works by significant artists such as architects Carlo Lugaro, Christopher and Kilian Ignatius Dientzenhofers, the ingenious Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel, the sculptors Matthias Bernard Braun and Ferdinand Maxmilián Brokoff, the painters Petr
Brandl and Karel Škréta, and many others. The Baroque also changed the way people thought, their customs and everyday life. During the period, numerous traditions sprouted that are still vivid in the Czech lands; rural architecture was born as well as theater, people were brewing beer, grew, made, and loved drinking wine, enjoyed good food, and celebrated and lived fully their holidays while sticking with their faith and humbleness. Yet, Baroque is not only a time long gone by. Many Baroque sites enjoy a dynamic life, offering various and often very unusual adventures such as night and costumed guided tours, tours with a story, theatre performances, concerts, fairs, carriage rides, and trips to the underground; architecture and lifestyle paired with festivals of Baroque music and gastronomy. It is difficult to choose just some of the most glittering landmarks in a country overwhelmed with Baroque treasures. Eight of them are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. People love to discover hidden treasures. There are plenty of Baroque pearls and gems all over this country worth looking for.

NATIONAL GALLERY PRAGUE National Gallery in Prague Vojtěch Hynais: Sketches, Studies, Designs 6 June – 3 September 2017 Trade Fair Palace Vojtěch Hynais (1854–1925) gained fame through his part in decorating the National Theatre in Prague. Although he spent the final part of his life in Prague, his artistic homes were first his native Vienna and, later, Paris. The Collection of Prints and Drawings of the National Gallery in Prague holds an extensive body of inherited draughtsmanship by Hynais. These works, most of which will be premiered correspond with the wide range of Hynais’s oeuvre. They simultaneously represent the outcomes of a draughtsman in their main functions and expressions (sketch – study – design). The selection displayed in the Graphic Cabinet introduces visitors to the artist’s journeying throughout Europe and to his professional successes, from the early works from the 1870s to those from his late period at the end of the 20 th century. The exhibition is a remembrance of the artist not only as a painter and draughtsman, but also as a creator of decorative designs for architecture, applied arts and printed publications, the common denominator of them being artistic virtuosity.
František Skála: Riding School The František Skála exhibition focuses on the artist’s work since 2004. Skála seeks to provide a complex experience for the visitor within the author’s architectural and exhibition concept in the Wallenstein Riding School Picture Gallery. The installation is fully integrated with the venue’s architecture and lighting and will include various pavilions or solitary monumental works, light installations and works done specifically for the site. The exhibition’s underlying principle will be an assemblage of artistic materials in several pavilions designed by the artist, “museums within a museum”. Skála will use the exhibition vocabulary to initiate different kinds and levels of dialogue between viewer and artwork. The display’s unifying element will be light, which Skála examines and uses in all its forms. On a practical level, the light makes it possible to see the exhibits, but it is also a tool for understanding them; it can shine through materials and “enlighten” the viewer. Most of the space will be illuminated with artificial light, sometimes imitating natural sunshine. In some cases, the viewer will enter a space illuminated by natural sunlight coming in through the gallery’s non-blacked out windows on to the Wallenstein Garden.

CITY GALLERY City Gallery Prague PRAGUE Richard Deacon: Free Assembly
13 April – 17 September 2017 Municipal Library, 2 nd floor, Mariánské náměstí 1, Prague 1 Richard Deacon (*1949), CBE, is the winner of the fourth edition of the Turner Prize in 1987. Since the 1980s his sculptural output has ranked alongside the most prominent creative achievements in this field, standing out not only in the context of the strong generation of British artists including Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Alison Wilding and Tony Cragg but also earning him repute as one of the most distinctive and closely followed artists on the world scene. This has been attested to by his many exhibitions staged by prestigious art institutions on all continents, as well as by his numerous monumental realizations scattered around the globe, from California to Tokyo. Despite the limitations of the exhibition area, visitors will still be able to view an impressively wide crosssection of his creative output exemplifying the artist’s characteristic analytical and cultured approach to the employment of industrial materials, and in his most recent ceramic objects his bold ventures beyond the traditional boundaries of the art of sculpture.

Stone, Stucco and Terracotta / Sculpture from Prague Gardens 3 May – 31 October 2017 Troja Château, Prague 7 An integral part of Prague’s historical gardens was their artistic decoration and small-scale architecture. The various sculptures and decorative elements told either their own stories, or drew attention to the status and personal likings of a site’s owner. Exposed over long decades to the follies of weather, these artefacts gradually disappeared from their garden locations. While some have been irretrievably lost, others have been replaced by copies. The Troja Château presents a selection of original sculptures from the Vrtba Garden or the Cibulka landscape park, along with surviving fragments of Troja Château’s own early Baroque garden statuary, and specimens from the Kinsky Garden, plus an array of busts from Portheimka summer retreat. The show’s title relates to
the favourite materials used in garden decoration, as well as to the fragmentariness and coarse condition of the exhibits, which have been kept in museum repositories in the same condition as they werefound, usually without being restored for display purposes.

MUSEUM KAMPA Museum Kampa Adolf Born – A Unique World 29 April – 30 July 2017 This great exhibition of works by this unique artist surpasses the usual ways how they were presented in the past. The cornerstone of the exhibition is a crosssection of his free works. The entrance offers a set of rare lithographs from the 1960s, never exhibited together.
The Kampa Museum presents an exhibition of leading draftsman, cartoonist and illustrator Adolf Born; the first grand retrospective of his works since his passing in 2016. Adolf Born was dedicated to illustrations for children and free works closely tied with them. Petr Volf, the curator, has prepared the exhibition as an invitation to Born’s specific world of interwoven mythological stories, figures from the Austrian-Hungarian Empire period, famous artists and totally make-believe characters.
Adolf Born experimented with creative expression, simple marks, drawing shortcuts, and raw playfulness: a rare collection of some three dozen pastel pictures that show the artist’s fantasy as well as his precise and daring work with colors and light; a set of ink drawings from his travels, capturing with his significant humor the atmosphere of the visited locations, will draw an attention, too. The exhibition also presents his original book illustrations, including the stories about Mach & Šebestová and poems by Hans Christian Morgenstern, as well as projections of animated films awarded both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
“There is another grade in the arts, the creation of one’s own magic world. An unrepeatable world with the presence of mystery, extracts of dreams, and maybe a little bit of hidden horror; an ever lasting presence of something unidentified that evokes our senses.” Adolf Born The artworks of Adolf Born (1930–2016) became an everlasting part of the Czech visual culture. Their communicativeness and impact interconnect several generations of his admirers. This retrospective intends to capture the various creative “disciplines” that he used.
More information on:
“The charm of the unique world of Adolf Born will be undoubtedly appreciated by both children and adults. I believe that this is an ideal family exhibition”, says Petr Volf, curator of the exhibition.

NATIONAL THEATRE National Theatre Lohengrin
12 January, 1885. Its most recent Prague production was premiered on 17 May, 1997, at the State Opera. Wagner’s grandiose Romantic opera about the fight between Good and Evil is set against an atmosphere replete with the mystery veiling an enigmatic hero who arrives to defend the honour of Elsa, Princess of Brabant. The new National Theatre production of Lohengrin, directed by Katharina Wagner, promises to provide an uplifting experience for every opera fan expecting wonderful music, bold emotions and a thrilling story.
Richard Wagner Premiered on 8 & 10 June 2017 in The National Theatre A number of globally-renowned composers have been connected with the history of Prague, either through directly living and working here or paying visits to the city. One such was the giant of music theatre Richard Wagner, who particularly liked Bohemia. Wagner started working on the text to his opera Lohengrin during his stay in a spa in Mariánské Lázně, in the summer of 1845. The opera was first staged in Weimar on 28 August, 1850, conducted by Franz Liszt, a composer, piano virtuoso and, later on, Wagner’s fatherin-law. The first Czech production of Lohengrin was premiered on 23 February, 1856, at the Estates Theatre in Prague, At the National Theatre, the opera was first performed on

and Eurydice ultimately running away for a better life. Offenbach’s operetta has attained immortality thanks to its engrossing melodies, effulgent dialogues and, last but not least, the “Infernal Galop” (the music for the “can-can”), which in the wake of the work’s premiere, on 21 October, 1858, at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens, went on to become a musical symbol of Paris. In Bohemia, Orphée aux enfers was first staged on 13 December, 1863, in Prague. Some 158 years since its premiere, the operetta remains a dashing, still topical, satire entertaining audiences worldwide.
Jacques Offenbach
Premiered on 6 & 7 July 2017 The Karlín Music Theatre Jacques Offenbach (1819–1880), an inspired artist, whose oeuvre encompasses dozens of vaudevilles and operettas, provided a model of music theatre, reflecting by means of comedy and persiflage the issues of his time. The most acclaimed were his operettas Orphée aux enfers and La belle Hélène, which against the background of the mythological stories wittily parodied the political and social situation during the time of the Second French Empire under Napoleon III. Orphée aux enfers, a brilliant comedy replete with gods, is set in Thebes, on Olympus and in the realm of Pluto, the ruler of the Underworld. Offenbach turned one of the best-known Greek myths inside out, transforming the couple into a dysfunctional family, with the two partners cheating on each other

SWETT CHOCOLATE FAIRY Sweet moments with a chocolate fairy
In 2008, the company Viva Praha – The Finest Belgian Chocolate opened a retail store with the best Belgian chocolate in the very center of Prague, just a few steps from the Old Town Square, in Celetná. The store specializes in Belgian chocolate, hand-made by the best chocolatiers from the chocolate capital, Bruges, in Belgium. The freshness of chocolate plays a great role, and that is why at the Viva store you can find only the best products imported directly from artisan producers. Together with classical chocolate products, such as pralines, figures, and bars, at the Viva store you can also buy novelties of the chocolate world, for example chocolate with high content of antioxidants, organic chocolate, and pralines with unusual flavors and combinations. Those who do not like chocolate can enjoy nougat, marzipan, or homemade fudge. Right at the store, while sitting over a cup of coffee in the Jungle bar, you can enjoy cakes, original Belgian wafers, fresh fruits dipped in chocolate, and the original hot chocolate that boasts several awards. The selection is now also supplemented with a section of Belgian beer specialties. Besides chocolate, the store produces the so-called “Rock Candy”. The store has tables prepared for the manufacture of this treat, so you can see the process, which dates back more than 400 years. The store is joined to the ChocoStory chocolate museum – a member of an international network of museums with branches in Bruges, Paris, and Mexico. In the museum you can dive into the 3,000-year-old history of chocolate. You can learn when, where, and who used it for the first time, who brought it to Europe, how it spread, and how it is made today. You can also learn that chocolate is good for your health, and remember the good old times over a collection of chocolate wraps. In the showroom, our chocolatiers will show how pralines are made; and you can also taste them or to try the work with the chocolate yourselves in one of the workshops. Along with that you can see the largest chocolate cascade in the Czech Republic. In Celetná 10, you can dive into the fabulous world of chocolate and candy with all your senses.

BOATBREWERY
– a rarity on the river Vltava
Republika® Lager, and the 13° Plato Monarchie® Dark Lager tasting of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate end. Other beer specialties will be regularly rotating on the tap: Irish Stout, English India Pale Ale and the strongest beer in the Czech Republic with 34° Plato, appropriately named “Titanic”.
“With this project I have fulfilled several of my childhood dreams,” says Vojtěch Ryvola, founder of this unconventional brewery. “I always longed for a boat, and I also wanted to have a restaurant where you can have a nap and rest after a good meal. For years, I had dreamed about brewing a batch of beer on the Vltava. I am a patriot and consider Czech beer our national treasure. On top of everything, our boat offers a beautiful view of the Prague Castle.”
The lower deck houses a beer hall with hot and cold meals, smoked delicacies and a direct view of the lagering tanks. If you love fish, do not miss a unconventional specialty: marinated fishburger. Grilled specialties will be offered on the deck during the summer months. The upper deck offers a relaxation section with 8 berths on sunny days for those who want to enjoy the panoramic view of Prague, from the Petřín Hill to Strahov and Prague Castle. The designers have not forgotten the children: there is a mini-playground with a sand box and a slide on the terrace.
A unique boat-brewery, the only one on the Vltava, and Czech rivers in general, now has fulfilled the dreams of its creator, and Prague visitors’, too. On three decks, visitors can enjoy a brewery, highquality Old-Bohemian cuisine, an elegant restaurant, an original on-board bar, relaxation berths, and showers. On the main deck there is the a la carte restaurant, kitchen, and a two-tun 500 liter brewhouse and, in a glass-walled room, two 5 hl and two 10 hl open fermentation vessels. This is a place where gourmet experiences are enriched by the aroma of malt and hops brewing. You can see and, above all, taste the result of the process, a golden brew with a creamy head. The choice of beers on tap always includes four kinds named after Czech boats: Legie® (Legion), Republika® (Republic)and Monarchie® (Monarchy). The lovers of bitter beers can enjoy the full-bodied Legie®, with 10° Plato, the well-balanced, 12° Plato
The Boat Brewery anchors on a steady place in the center of Prague, by the right bank, under the Štefánik Bridge. It is not a classical boat but it is able to float at various occasions or upon request. It can host parties or you can just come to relax after sight-seeing in Prague. Come and you will understand, especially if you love beer, good food, and a unconventional view of the charming Prague panorama. And how to say “Good Bye” to the Boat Brewery? Unconventionally. You can choose the sailors’ “Ahoy” or the traditional brewmasters’ “May God Give Luck”.

It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many wellpreserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a four purpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is located, there used to be a vineyard and a utility garden in 1517. The sanctuary and the cupola were built in 1737–1752 based on Dienzenhofer’s design, and the structure was finished by A. Lurago between 1751 and 1756. It is a scale model (1:5) of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed by Ing. František Prášil from the famous ČKD factory. Its construction started on 16 March 1891 and was finished on 20th August of the same year. The tower is located at an altitude of 324 m above sea level and is 60 m tall. It
form the most significant part of the interior decoration. Most of the sculptures in the church are works by I. F. Platzer. The oldest sculpture in the church is Our Lady of Foyen on the left altar, brought by the Jesuits from Belgium in 1629. The tower of the church (the baroque belfry) actually never was an integral part of the church as it was an independent property owned by the Lesser Town of Prague. It served as the bell- and observation-tower. Important facts about the church: Height of the cupola: 50 m inside; 70 m outside; 79 m with the clerestory Width of the church: 40 m • Width of the nave: 30 m Length of the church: 60 m (without the stairs) Surface area of the murals: 3000 m 2 The church is open daily: 9 am–5 pm (III–X), 9 am–4 pm (XI–II) The Observation Tower open daily: 10 am–6 pm (XI–II), 10 am–8 pm (III, X), 10 am–10 pm (IV–IX) Admission: 70 CZK (the Church); 90 CZK (the Belfry)

With a help of your imagination, Alice will go through all the beautiful and sweet moments of maturing, first loves, awakening adultery, knowledge of life, laughs, tears, joy, and sorrow. All of it takes place against the background of ancient Prague, its architectural jewels, its rich history, and Prague as a crossroads of Christian and Jewish cultures. Large-screen projections, animated film, puppets, unique on-stage tricks, black theatre effects, beautiful contemporary and classical music, and your imagination unite in a breathtaking show unseen in any other theatre.
Daily at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends artists, journalists, and students. Café de Paris, located in the Art-Nouveau Paris hotel, definitely lives up to its name – the original interior and decorations reflect the culture and refined taste of famous Parisian cafés since the beginning of the 1920s, while elements of modern design and free WIFI connection offer guests maximal comfort. Franz Kafka loved our excellent desserts. You can bet that we faithfully follow our tradition. For a century people have enjoyed the famous “Paris” cake in a unique atmosphere. The menu of our café is extensive, with excellent salads, snaks, delicious soups and sandwiches, and other treats tempting guests for a light lunch and/or dinner. It’s up to you whether you choose the Café de Paris for a friendly appointment over a cup of coffee, and/or a business meeting. In the bar located in the back part of the café, our bartenders prepare excellent cocktails for you. The selection is truly wide, and you don’t have to hurry – we don’t close until early morning. Café Imperial has always been a heavily frequented hot-spot ever since 1914 when the Imperial hotel was built. Prague doesn’t have many places like this. Nowhere else you can find such a unique interior in the Art Deco style with cubist elements, and top Art-Nouveau mosaics. The recent successful reconstruction (the *****hotel and café were reopened in 2007) even improved the firstrate quality of the café, and – at the same time – it succeeded in preserving the atmosphere, which is inseparable from the Grand Café style. Breakfast, dinner, afternoon cup of tea or coffee, night celebration with friends – everything will be taken care of to the slightest detail by the friendly staff. The menu presents the best of the Czech culinary art. The famous chef Zdeněk Pohlreich and his team are ready to fulfil all the wishes of all their guests. Café Imperial offers a unique chance to dine right in the kitchen and observe how your menu is prepared while you discuss the served wines with your sommelier. The Best Hotel Restaurant of the year 2009 (awarded by the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic) Café Imperial is looking forward to your visit. Na Poříčí 15, Prague 1 Tel.: +420 246 011 440 cafe@hotel-imperial.cz www.cafeimperial.cz Open daily: 7 am–11 pm
Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee. The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and savoury espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, and/or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too. The Louvre café was founded in 1902. We are honoured to carry on the tradition of this establishment, which has been a top café culture and cultural life centre ever since its origin. We are proud to have experienced repeated visits by personalities of world-wide significance such as Franz Kafka, Karel Čapek, Albert Einstein, and many others. The café opens at 8 a.m. and offers a wide selection of breakfasts and newspapers. The restaurant serves traditional Czech cuisine, and light fare specialties. The non-smoking part of the restaurant, and several salons, seat parties of up to 15–20 guests. We maintain the tradition of “café sports” – thus you can borrow chess sets and play pool on one of five pool tables. On hot days you can enjoy a stay on an open-air summer terrace. Covering 400 sq m, our newly opened Louvre Photogallery displays the best works of leading Czech photographers. The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.”
Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360. Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340–1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted. (see p. 90–91)

Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre, you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. Other places worth a visit are the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, with a lookout tower and the exhibition Angels on the Hill, and the former Bishop’s Gymnasium, which today houses a successfully restored museum. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest. (see p. 6)

KUTNÁHORA – UNESCO family member for 22 years Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, and the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city. VISITSOUTHBOHEMIA – a friendly and hospitable region
This region, where for centuries people have lived in harmony with nature, surprises all visitors with its beauty. Those who come to visit the countless historical landmarks will understand how enlightened and wealthy the local aristocratic families were; and how many excellent artists and craftsmen used to live there. For the generations to come, they have left countless cultural and historical landmarks as evidence of a rich and multi-layered history: ancient cities full of life and culture, majestic Gothic churches, dreamy Renaissance chateaux, monasteries, rural architectural landmarks, interesting technical structures, and sophisticated fishpond systems. Thanks to the absence of large industrial complexes, the landscape has kept its high scenic value. The countryside in South Bohemia remains one of the best preserved, unspoiled, and most beautiful regions of the Czech Republic, which is also evident from the number of established natural preserved areas. South Bohemia is a region of countless lakes, pine forests, and extensive bogs decorated with the silhouettes of towns and country churches matching the white manors built in the rural baroque style. And the cities are no open-air museums; they vibrate with busy everyday life in an unrepeatable atmosphere. Stop here, stay longer, and come again… South Bohemia won’t disappoint you.

PEARL OF THEFOLKBAROQUE The South-Bohemian village of Holašovice is one of the most picturesque rural towns in the Czech Republic. It represents the best preserved sample of South-Bohemian architecture of the second half of the 19 th century – the Folk Baroque. It is not an open-air museum, but a permanently inhabited village with normal, every day life. Holašovice was included in the UNESCO Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1998, and, since then, it has had to get used to busy tourist traffic. There are 23 protected beautiful farmsteads with sheds, barns, stalls, granaries, and gates. Altogether, the 120 structures compose a complex landmark set. The homesteads are set around a rectangular common and most of the houses have little gardens with pumps and wooden water flumes in front; a setup that gives it a special atmosphere. A “Folk Festival” takes place in Holašovice every year, on the second to last weekend in July, with demonstrations of traditional and less-known handicrafts from Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia. In a house called the “Folk Court” you can find a rural life museum with more than 250 items on display that document the life of farmers until the first half of the 20 th century. You can also visit a ceramic workshop. If the South-Bohemian folk Baroque catches your heart, you can plan a trip to follow its trace to the numerous villages in the area with relics of this architecture. And while you travel, do not forget to try out local culinary specialties. For centuries, this region has abounded in fish and game and other natural fruits. Try, for example, a typical South-Bohemian creamy soup with wild mushrooms called “Kulajda”. The traditional treats include various dishes of potatoes and carp prepared in the most various ways. The rich South-Bohemian cuisine is simple and yet hearty and tasty. The locals are truly grateful and attentive hosts.

Písek boasts the title “The best city to live in the Czech Republic”, and it is popular among tourists who can enjoy high quality services, numerous places of interest and activities. A Stone Bridge spans the Otava, whose auriferous sand gave the city its name (sand = písek), and it is the oldest structure of its kind in the country. The early-Gothic Royal Castle is another landmark reminiscing the time when Písek was founded (1243), and that now houses the local Prácheň Regional Museum. The deanery Church of the Birth of Virgin Mary, with its 72-meter-high tower, dominates the city. Both the church and the tower are open for visitors. The recent investments in the revitalization of the historical center of Písek are evident at every step. On a groomed promenade on the banks of the Otava, along the fortification walls, is the original mill turned into the Municipal Electric Power Plant that today houses the museum of lighting. You can have a rest in a cozy park in the former
castle moat. Behind the baroque Town Hall, on one of the courtyards, you can find a former Malthouse, which after costly renovations has been turned into a center of illustrations for children and a playful gallery, as well as the Tourist information center and an exhibition on malting. Písek offers pleasant cafes and restaurants, as well as numerous events like the City Festival (9 – 11 June 2017), the festival Jazz in Písek (4 August 2017), the Folklore Festival (17 – 20 August 2017), and the Beer Festivities (1 – 2 September 2017). Massive sand sculptures are built every year by the Stone Bridge, decorating the city throughout summer. In 2017, the sculptures will invite you into the world of fairy-tales. Písecké hory (Písek Hills), next to the city’s eastern outskirts, offer excellent conditions for walks, longer hikes and cycling tours. You can learn about natural places of interest and enjoy views of the South-Bohemian countryside full of fishponds and the foothills of the Šumava mountain range. The poetic valley of the Otava invites for cycling tours as well as canoeing down to Písek, or even further to the majestic Zvíkov Castle. You can get to Písek from Prague comfortably by bus. Fans of more nostalgic traveling can take a somewhat more time demanding ride on a train. A historical motor train goes to Písek throughout summer, on Sundays.

KUKS
THE STORY OF A PLACE THAT HAS FOUND ITSELF ANEW
The Kuks Baroque Complex was built at the beginning of the 18 th century by František Antonín Špork (1662–1738).
100,000 people came to the Elbe valley near Dvůr Králové, in East Bohemia, to admire the rebirth of this Baroque gem.
Charmed by the grandiosity of the social life at the court of Luis XIV in Versailles, Špork decided to realize his vision of “heaven on earth” in a deserted valley of the Elbe when he was only thirty years old.
Along with classical sightseeing tours, in August visitors can travel to the times of Baroque theater with the Theatrum Kuks Festival, enjoy a vintage in September, and celebrate St. Hubertus day in October.
Only fragments remain of the chateau, the spa buildings, the colonnade, the horse racing park, the library, and the theater that hosted ensembles from all over Europe. But the hospital building for old men, the mighty Holy Trinity Church with the Špork family tomb, the monastery garden, and the open-air gallery of allegoric statues of the Virtues and the Vices by Matyáš Bernard Braun have survived to these days.
But the most important day to remember is 17 June 2017, when the Baroque Festival brings Kuks back to its days of glory. The valley will once again live the Baroque whirl that was last time experienced by Count Špork with live scenes from the period, theatrical performances, parades of noblemen and court ladies, a military camp, jugglers, musicians, jousting, and a fire show in the evening.
The reopening of the complex after its restoration attracted 140,000 visitors in 2015, and last year, over

NATIONAL STUD AT KLADRUBY NAD LABEM Just an hour’s drive east of Prague lies one of the oldest studs in the world. When you get tired of the hustle and bustle of cities, come to Kladruby nad Labem to soak up the atmosphere of the bygone centuries when horses ruled supreme on all the roads. You will find a unique cultural landscape here, full of pastures and ancient lime avenues, and in the heart of it all the Stud itself, which served as an Imperial Court Stud for almost 350 years (1579–1918). You can still meet the rare breed of Old Kladruber horses here, whose origins go all the way back to the 16th century. Historically, they were bred here for ceremonial coach service at the imperial courts in Prague and Vienna, and they still serve at the royal courts in Denmark and Sweden even today. After you explore the stables, you can set on a guided tour of the imperial chateau, the historical coach house, harness room and the museum, or take a stroll through the romantic English park with age-old oak trees.
Opening times 1 April – 31 October: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., closed on Mondays

Olomouc, the “Pearl of Moravia”, has been Moravia’s spiritual centre for centuries. According to Lonely Planet, it is one of the most beautiful CentralEuropean cities, and a “hidden gem of Europe”. What is Olomouc like? Both domestic and foreign visitors use similar words: it is a beautiful, historical and charming city with architectonic landmarks from all eras on a small area, and not crowded with tourists.
In Olomouc, everybody is a little bit in motion, and still relaxed.
Have a stroll through the squares and streets in a city that is one of the oldest in the country, and that, thanks to bishops, monasteries, and a university, has been a cradle of culture and education for centuries. Just open your eyes, feel, and listen. The mighty St. Wenceslas Cathedral, the three fabulous domes on the Baroque St. Michael Church, the elegant slim tower of the Town Hall, and the robust Gothic St. Maurice Church. These are the crowns of the historical centre of this enchanting city. The complex set of local landmarks is dominated by the largest group of sculptures in Central Europe: the 32 m tall Holy Trinity Column, included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 2000.
Come and see for yourself what Olomouc is like…
