Dear visitors! I would like you to accept my invitation to Pilsen, a city that is representing the Czech Republic as the European Capital of Culture, this year. Pilsen, the metropolis of West Bohemia, is mostly known as the home of one of the world’s most famous beers, Pilsner Urquell, the original Pilsner Lager. Proof of this are the hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world who come every year to the city for the brewery tours. However, Pilsen is also a town with a long and famous history, which will be obvious just after your first walk through the historical centre, where you will see the imposing Gothic Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, the fourth largest synagogue in the world, or the gorgeous Renaissance building of the City Hall. The preserved interiors of eight houses designed by the world-famous architect Adolf Loos are evidence of the advanced cultural level of their times. Three of them offer guided tours for the public.
of metal sculptures, are also not to be missed. The year-long program of Pilsen – European Capital of Culture 2015 includes more than 600 events of music, theatre, film, exhibitions, workshops, parties, sports competitions and acrobatic performances of new circus.
Its extraordinarily rich cultural tradition was one of the reasons why Pilsen ran for the title European Capital of Culture 2015, which it was awarde thanks to the quality of its projects. The location of Pilsen also played its role – in the very heart of Europe, at the intersection of busy roads and railway lines, not even an hour away by car from Prague or the German border.
The last third of the year will also have a rich cultural program. I would like to invite you to the Theatre – international festival or the Jazz Without Frontiers Festival, where leading jazz musicians from all over the world will perform. And don’t miss Pilsner Fest, the annual celebration of the birth of the famous Pilsner Urquell, at the beginning of October, while an extensive exhibition at the Gallery of West Bohemia will remind us of baroque art in the region. The Pilsen – European Capital of Culture 2015 project will close during the Pilsner Advent and its unique atmosphere, one of the most magical experiences in the city.
In the last decade, its formerly neglected appearance of an industrial town has changed significantly for the better, and Pilsen is now one of the most attractive cities in the Czech Republic. Visitors appreciate the beautifully restored historical centre and the green belt of parks that surround it. The investments in cultural infrastructure are also evident – the original architecture of the New Theatre or the attractive industrial facilities DEPO 2015, which host domestic and foreign artists, and interesting exhibitions. The exhibition of contemporary design DOMUS or Restart, and an exhibition

(1912–1994) was one of the world’s most important pianists of the 20th century. His first musical steps were guided by Leoš Janáček, Vilém Kurz, and Josef Suk. He launched his brilliant career with a concert in New York in 1941, when he was publicly supported by the greatest pianists of his time: Rudolf Serkin, Arthur Rubinstein, and Vladimir Horowitz. In 2015, the piano festival bearing his name is entering its third season. It has already presented a triumphal appearance by the Berlin Philharmonic with Sir Simon Rattle and the pianist Ivo Kahánek, and recitals by Emanuel Ax, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Lukáš Vondráček, Giovanni Bellucci, Lise de la Salle, and other wonderful pianists from around the world. The festival has proven that four evenings focusing exclusively on piano music within a single week can offer a truly exceptional demonstration of unique approaches to interpretation, differences of temperament, and diverse ways of playing. So don’t hesitate to take advantage of the special 25% discount on admission prices when you buy tickets to all four festival concerts. Opening the 2015 Rudolf Firkušný Piano Festival will be Firkušný’s pupil, and Grammy Award winner and Avery Fisher Prize laureate, the pianist Yefim Bronfman. “Rudolf Firkušný was a great pianist and musician. It is a great honor for me to be invited to perform on a series in his name.” More information and tickets on line are available at

This is the first time in over than 30 years that an exhibition of this scope has been held in Prague. It presents the most beautiful works of the most important Czech landscape painters, both from private and public collections, created from the 19th century to the present day. The landscape atelier existed in the Academy of Visual Arts in Prague already in 1806, and hundreds of artists have devoted themselves to landscape painting throughout those two centuries. The organisers have chosen the most essential and valuable of them in order to emphasize the legacy of great Czech artists. The exhibition is conceptually divided in 13 sections, each representing a cross-section of a certain period. From the ideal landscapes of classicism and romanticism, and the advent of realism, through the golden age of landscape painting of realism and impressionism, around 1900, with the authors of the most beautiful landscape paintings of all. The section the “Landscape of the Soul”, takes the observer to the dreamy fairytale landscapes of symbolism and Art Nouveau, while others will present members of the Mánes Union, which for more than half a century set the course for growth in Czech arts. At the same time, several distinctive movements developed, particularly expressionism. Unseen landscapes begin to show up in Prague. Their authors were Filla, Beneš, Nowak, Kubín, etc. Another section will show the distinctives solitaires of the Tvrdošíjní group (Špála, Zrzavý, Kremlička, Čapek). The “Magic of Dreams” will be represented by the imaginative and surrealistic landscapes of Šíma, Toyen, Štyrský. And also civilism and cityscape, finishing with the pictures of the movements that were coming after WWII and contemporary painters. The installation at the Prague Castle Riding School features over 550 pictures and 80 drawings and over 120 works are on display at the Diamant Gallery.

Cigler is a pioneer in the introduction of optical glass from the technical and science worlds into the world of art. The lightning-kinetic moment becomes a permanent part of a wide range of his works, whether it is conveyed in glass, polished metal, the surface of water, or all that media combined. From Makeshift to Fad: Artistic Cast Ironwork from the Collections of the City of Prague Museum how artistic cast iron penetrated into many areas of the lives of our ancestors.

Watchstand featuring the motif of trophies
This exhibition from the collection of the City of Prague Museum, “From Makeshift to Fad”, at Troja Château, presents cast ironwork, whose “lives” are linked to Prague, but come from different Czech foundries, which, in the mid 19th century, were almost 50. The period when cast ironwork begun to be used large scale started at the end of the 18th century, reaching the artistic peak of the industry in the 1830s. Most of the exhibition is, in fact, dedicated to that period, where cast ironwork became first a necessity and later a very popular material; with foundries introducing modern technologies and working together with leading artists. The castings of this period are characterised by their high technical and artist quality. Medals, jewellery of filigree delicacy, inkwells and candlesticks that followed the Empire fashion, genre animal figurines and many other items that represent

Pandora’s Vox/Veronika Holcová, Klara Kristalova, Sandra Vásquez de la Horra 15 July – 1 November 2015 Colloredo-Mansfeld Palace Karlova 2, Prague 1 Opening hours: Tue–Sun 10 am–6 pm An exhibition deriving its title from the name of the Greek mythological figure presents works by Czech artist Veronika Holcová, Klara Kristalova (Sweden), and Sandra Vásquez de la Horra (Germany). Though they draw on different cultural backgrounds and life experiences, their artistic idioms feature certain similarities of existential nature. Sandra Vásquez de la Horra (b. 1967) spent her early youth in Chile, and has sought and found a major source of creative inspiration, apart from her own authentic life story, in the world of Latin American legends and in European literature. The aesthetic of her quasi-naive figurative drawings, coupled with her copious use of lettering, harks back to the tradition of acknowledging an affinity with folk culture.
Veronika Holcová: Lilith – gravity also draws a good deal of inspiration from literature, most notably from the writings of the Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen. Veronika Holcová (b. 1973) avowedly embraces in her work the legacy of the Czech Surrealist movement, Romantism, and Symbolism. Her output oscillates between two opposite poles: figurative works on paper and paintings of boundless dream landscapes. There, she treats her iconic character, Lilith, with a slightly ironic sense of detachment.
Klara Kristalova (b. 1967), an artist of Czech extraction, has spent her whole life in Sweden. Her ceramic sculptures with coloured glaze surfaces concentrate, content-wise, on the traumas experienced by the individual on the cusp of adulthood. Kristalova
Milota Havránková: Milota 2 October 2015 – 17January 2016 The Stone Bell House Staroměstské náměstí 13, Prague 1 Opening hours: Tue–Sun 10 am–8 pm This retrospective exhibition is held to celebrate the jubilee of this representative of the Czech and Slovak art scenes, a photographer and multi-media artist. During her teaching career in Bratislava, Havránková influenced a whole generation of Czechoslovak photographers, who would later make history as the “Slovak New Wave”. Her work, thanks to her interMouth ests in photographic experiments, the choice of themes and the way they are visually realised, differs from the mainstream of Slovak photography and sets it apart from the way this art is classically understood – a black and white document or a photographic concept. The exhibited works represent a continuous experiment with the photographic medium, which is constantly changing.

exhibition to this phenomenon, presenting about 300 works by artists like Egon Schiele, František Kupka, Johannes Baader, Heinrich Vogeler, Joseph Beuys, Jörg Immendorff, and Friedensreich Hudertwasser. The exhibition discovers not only mutually coinciding effects, but draws unexpected links, placing the “prophets” and the artistic avant-garde into farreaching social and historical relationships.
In cooperation with the Schirm Kunsthalle Frankfurt 21 July – 25 October 2015 Veletržní Palace Egon Schiele perceived himself as a visionary and prophet artist, František Kupka created one of the main development lines of abstract painting refined with spiritual energy, Joseph Beuys sparked a revolution called “social sculpture”, while Friedensreich Hudertwasser was a protector of the environment whose spiral pictures were basically holistic. These basic artistic attitudes would had never originated without ties with the “barefooted prophets”. Their significance for modern arts have remained an unfinished story in substantial features. Their names – Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, Gusto Gräser, Gustav Nagel, Friedrich Muck-Lamberty, and Ludwig Christian Haeusser have been almost forgotten, even though they enjoyed a great deal of popularity during their lives. They were recognized by artists and intellectuals, although not quite openly in many cases. The Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt am Mein, Germany, in cooperation with the National Gallery in Prague, has dedicated a grand

28 July – 18 October 2015 Schwarzenberg Palace The exhibition commemorates Nicolas Poussin (1694 –1665), one of the most important Baroque painters, who died 350 years ago. Poussin was born in Normandy; after initial training in there, he improved his art in Paris, but his work did not achieve its characteristic style until after his relocation to Italy, in 1623. Poussin obstinately blazed his own artistic trail, diverging from the exalted Baroque style that prevailed in Rome at that time. He pioneered rationally based Baroque classicism using models from Antiquity and Renaissance masters, especially Titian and Raphael. Poussin’s work combines intellect with sensuality. He sought for perfection and chose imposing themes imbuing them with moral and philosophical messages. Poussin’s distinctive paintings were a continuous source of inspiration (and controversy) for artists in the following centuries. His work had a great impact on French and English Classicism in the 17th and 18th centuries. Poussin’s elaborate compositions had a major influence on, among others,

A Sense of Art: Icons in Art at the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts 23 October 2015 – 10 January 2016 National Gallery – Salm Palace
of the 125th anniversary of the establishment of the Czech Academy of Emperor Franz Joseph for Sciences, Literature and Arts, the precursor of today’s Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The project seeks to introduce the Academy to the broader public as a useful institution, and show the results of academic research in the light of contemporary life.
From its establishment in 1890 and until 1952, the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts brought together artists, authors and musicians who recognised their peers annually with awards for artistic achievement. The exhibition A Sense of Art is the first to present artworks that received these prestigious academic awards in 1891–1952, and illustrates the transformation of Czech culture in this period. The major Czech artists who were recognised included Vojtěch Hynais, Mikoláš Aleš, František Ženíšek, Josef Václav Myslbek, František Bílek, František Kupka, Vojtěch Preissig, Josef Lada, Dušan Jurkovič and Josef Gočár. Some of the award-winning works have remained in the possession of the Czech Academy of Sciences, though most have gone to numerous institutions and private collections. This is the first opportunity for the public to view a collection of works that received these academic awards. The exhibition will also introduce patrons, longstanding supporters of Czech art.

No Borders, Art in the Ore Mountains 1250–1550 The more than 200 works of art shown at the “No Borders” exhibition offers the visitor an extraordinary artistic experience, with 500 year-old historical facts that have had a significant effect on the current appearance of the North Bohemian towns (city planning, roads, etc.).
27 November 2015 – 28 March 2016 National Gallery – Waldstein Riding School During the high and late Middle Ages, the cross border region of the Ore Mountains was the scene of an intense business and cultural exchange between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Principality of Saxony. The unprecedented wealth of urban centres like Litoměřice, Ústí nad Labem, Louny, Žatec, Most, Teplice, etc. at the end of the Middle Ages – late 15, early 16 centuries – was reflected in a strong need to artistically represent towns, aristocracy, monasteries and even individuals with the highest criteria. Each of the sections dedicated to the culture of the above mentioned towns includes an exhibition of treasures of sculpture and painting (altars and their conserved parts), objects of precious metals used in liturgy (chalices, monstrances, reliquaries), liturgical books or works that decorated buildings (portals). Mining in the Ore Mountains brings us closer not only to objects related to the activity (hoes, hammers, burners), but also to coins (Jáchymov Tolars) and medals made in the Jáchymov Mint.

The inception of Norma, the best-known opera by Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini (1801–1835), was instigated by the phenomenal Italian soprano Giuditta Pasta (1797–1865), who was scheduled to appear at La Scala and for her Milan debut wished a new opera by Bellini. The librettist Felice Romani reached for the text based on Alexandre Soumet’s tragedy Norma, ou L’infanticide. The story is set in the time of the Roman occupation of Gaul. The immense success of the premiere, on 26 December 1831, was also down to Giuditta Pasta, who had initially turned down the part of Norma owing to its being extremely

Yet the two works, so distant from one another at first glance, have much in common – not only their being based on fairy tales, but also the theme and message, which is inherent to the genre. WINE ANDViticulture VITICULTURE IN PRAGUE Wine and in Prague We offer you a way to spend a pleasant time while in Prague – visit one of Prague’s vineyards and sample some local wine during one of the many vintage festivals. You may be surprised, but there are several vineyards that produce wine in Prague and its surroundings.
St. Clara’s Vineyard in Trója
True, we cannot precisely date the beginnings of the cultivation of varietal grapes on the land of what is today Prague, but there is documentation that there were vineyards in Prague back in the days of the rule of King Wencelsas II (1137–1192). Under the government of the Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV (1316–1378), thanks to his decree of 1358 on the establishment of vineyards, all suitable land (southern slopes) was planted with vines. Concurrently with this decree, the ruler also issued vineyard rights to protect and support vineyards, and named a special official, a so-called Vineyard Hill Master. For Prague, this official’s office remained active until 1848. Under the rule of Emperor Rudolf II (1552– 1616) viticulture enjoyed its greatest boom, and with its 720 hectares of vineyards, Prague became known as the “City of Wine”. As a result of the unrest of the Thirty Years War, the vineyards lay fallow and abandoned, but even so, in 1776 there were nearly 700 hectares of vineyards in Prague. Today Prague’s vineyards cover about 12 hectares, but all boast centuries-long histories and rich traditions that survive to this day. There are now just six vineyards within Prague that remind us of the past glory of Prague’s viniculture: St. Klara’s Vineyard and the Salabka vineyard in Troja, the Máchalka vineyard in Vysočany, the Gröbovka vineyard in Vinohrady, the Arcibiskupská vineyard in Modřany and the St. Wenceslas Vineyard in Prague Castle.
Not many people would look for an idyllic vineyard in the heart of a European capital. One of the oldest vineyards in Prague can be found right in the Castle complex. Its ancient tradition dates back to the 10th century, to the origins of Czech statehood. The unique location of the complex on the eastern rock spur under Prague Castle, above the Old Castle Stairs, offers unique and immaculate panoramic views to of the most beautiful parts of Prague. You will also find vineyards near Prague, on the banks of the Vltava, Labe, and Berounka rivers. The Karlštejn vineyards, below the famous castle, are also very interesting and old. When traveling Prague and the Czech Republic, you should not miss such wonderful experiences.
Cheers!
VINTAGE PRAGUE CASTLE Vintage atAT Prague Castle 10th edition of the Vintage at Prague Castle Royal Gardens of Prague Castle 19–20 September, 2015, 11:00–18:00
Winegrowing at the Prague Castle has a tradition that dates back to more than millennium. The current tradition was renovated in the 1920s by the architect Josip Plečnik. Plečnik projected a vineyard on the southern slopes below the Na Valech garden. It was renovated in 2003. When the first grapes were harvested in 2006, the Prague Castle Administration came up with the idea to organize the first modern “Prague Castle Vintage”. To celebrate its 10th edition, the Vintage at Prague Castle has prepared a representative showcase of the best winemakers from Bohemia and Moravia that will take place in all the rooms of the Ball Game Hall in the Royal Gardens, and will include culinary experiences. Sparkling wines, Moravian burčák (young wine), and freshly pressed grape juice will also be available. Attendants will taste a wide range of traditional Czech products awarded with the national quality label KLASA and Regionaní potravina (Regional food).
The pleasant atmosphere will be in the hands of traditional folkloric music interpreters, and the Production Gardens of Prague Castle will be again open for visitors.

SWETT CHOCOLATE FAIRY Sweet moments with a chocolate fairy
In 2008, the company Viva Praha – The Finest Belgian Chocolate opened a retail store with the best Belgian chocolate in the very center of Prague, just a few steps from the Old Town Square, in Celetná. The store specializes in Belgian chocolate, hand-made by the best chocolatiers from the chocolate capital, Bruges, in Belgium. The freshness of chocolate plays a great role, and that is why at the Viva store you can find only the best products imported directly from artisan producers. Together with classical chocolate products, such as pralines, figures, and bars, at the Viva store you can also buy novelties of the chocolate world, for example chocolate with high content of antioxidants, organic chocolate, and pralines with unusual flavors and combinations. Those who do not like chocolate can enjoy nougat, marzipan, or homemade fudge. Right at the store, while sitting over a cup of coffee in the Jungle bar, you can enjoy cakes, original Belgian wafers, fresh fruits dipped in chocolate, and the original hot chocolate that boasts several awards. The selection is now also supplemented with a section of Belgian beer specialties. Besides chocolate, the store produces the so-called “Rock Candy”. The store has tables prepared for the manufacture of this treat, so you can see the process, which dates back more than 400 years. The store is joined to the ChocoStory chocolate museum – a member of an international network of museums with branches in Bruges, Paris, and Mexico. In the museum you can dive into the 3,000-year-old history of chocolate. You can learn when, where, and who used it for the first time, who brought it to Europe, how it spread, and how it is made today. You can also learn that chocolate is good for your health, and remember the good old times over a collection of chocolate wraps. In the showroom, our chocolatiers will show how pralines are made; and you can also taste them or to try the work with the chocolate yourselves in one of the workshops. Along with that you can see the largest chocolate cascade in the Czech Republic. In Celetná 10, you can dive into the fabulous world of chocolate and candy with all your senses.

It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many wellpreserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a four purpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is located, there used to be a vineyard and a utility garden in 1517. ALICE MASARYKOVÁ (1879–1966) and Support for the Arts Prague Castle Picture Gallery • 7/8/2015 – 7/11/2015 Dr. Alice Masaryková (1879–1966), elder daughter of the first president of Czechoslovakia, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (TGM), played a major role in creating Prague Castle’s art collection. After her mother died in 1923 she assumed the role of First Lady, being at her father’s side when welcoming distinguished guests to Prague Castle. TGM wanted at the same time to remind visitors of the traditionally high standard of Czech culture. The Office of the President began to purchase works by Czech artists, and Alice gave her opinion and recommended the purchase of specific paintings. Thanks to the support of Alice Masaryková, the Castle succeeded in acquiring many fine works in the Czech visual arts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

“Aspects of Alice” is a classical Black Light Theatre performance based on motifs of “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. Audiences in more than 30 countries on three continents have admired this theatrical performance for its imaginativeness, poetics, and perfect technical tricks. With a help of your imagination, Alice will go through all the beautiful and sweet moments of maturing, first loves, awakening adultery, knowledge of life, laughs, tears, joy, and sorrow. All of it takes place against the background of ancient Prague, its architectural jewels, its rich history, and Prague as a crossroads of Christian and Jewish cultures. Large-screen projections, animated film, puppets, unique on-stage tricks, black theatre effects, beautiful contemporary and classical music, and your imagination unite in a breathtaking show unseen in any other theatre.

For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends artists, journalists, and students. Café de Paris, located in the Art-Nouveau Paris hotel, definitely lives up to its name – the original interior and decorations reflect the culture and refined taste of famous Parisian cafés since the beginning of the 1920s, while elements of modern design and free WIFI connection offer guests maximal comfort. Franz Kafka loved our excellent desserts. You can bet that we faithfully follow our tradition. For a century people have enjoyed the famous “Paris” cake in a unique atmosphere. The menu of our café is extensive, with excellent salads, snaks, delicious soups and sandwiches, and other treats tempting guests for a light lunch and/or dinner. It’s up to you whether you choose the Café de Paris for a friendly appointment over a cup of coffee, and/or a business meeting. In the bar located in the back part of the café, our bartenders prepare excellent cocktails for you. The selection is truly wide, and you don’t have to hurry – we don’t close until early morning. Café Imperial has always been a heavily frequented hot-spot ever since 1914 when the Imperial hotel was built. Prague doesn’t have many places like this. Nowhere else you can find such a unique interior in the Art Deco style with cubist elements, and top Art-Nouveau mosaics. The recent successful reconstruction (the *****hotel and café were reopened in 2007) even improved the firstrate quality of the café, and – at the same time – it succeeded in preserving the atmosphere, which is inseparable from the Grand Café style. Breakfast, dinner, afternoon cup of tea or coffee, night celebration with friends – everything will be taken care of to the slightest detail by the friendly staff. The menu presents the best of the Czech culinary art. The famous chef Zdeněk Pohlreich and his team are ready to fulfil all the wishes of all their guests. Café Imperial offers a unique chance to dine right in the kitchen and observe how your menu is prepared while you discuss the served wines with your sommelier. The Best Hotel Restaurant of the year 2009 (awarded by the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic) Café Imperial is looking forward to your visit. Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee. The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and savoury espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, and/or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too. The Louvre café was founded in 1902. We are honoured to carry on the tradition of this establishment, which has been a top café culture and cultural life centre ever since its origin. We are proud to have experienced repeated visits by personalities of world-wide significance such as Franz Kafka, Karel Čapek, Albert Einstein, and many others. The café opens at 8 a.m. and offers a wide selection of breakfasts and newspapers. The restaurant serves traditional Czech cuisine, and light fare specialties. The non-smoking part of the restaurant, and several salons, seat parties of up to 15–20 guests. We maintain the tradition of “café sports” – thus you can borrow chess sets and play pool on one of five pool tables. On hot days you can enjoy a stay on an open-air summer terrace. Covering 400 sq m, our newly opened Louvre Photogallery displays the best works of leading Czech photographers. TŘEBÍČ Třebíč is a picturesque town with rich history and a lot of valuable architectural monuments. The most remarkable have been included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List – the St. Procopius Basilica and the Jewish Quarter with the Jewish Cemetery.
Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre, you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. Other places worth a visit are the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, with a lookout tower and the exhibition Angels on the Hill, and the former Bishop’s Gymnasium, which today houses a successfully restored museum. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest.
The Basilica, built in the Romanesque style with some early Gothic features, is one of the treasures of medieval architecture. The most valuable part of the Basilica is the crypt. The Jewish Quarter is the only evidence of Jewish culture outside the territory of Israel included in the UNESCO list and it’s a unique complex of 123 buildings, among them the Front and Rear Synagogue, and the Seligmann Bauer’s House, with an exhibition of a typical Jewish household.

TELČ Telč is one of the most sought-after cultural destinations, where you can pleasantly spend your free time. You can visit historical landmarks and the Telč undergrounds, now open to the public, located below most of the houses on the Zacharias of Hradec square and part of the chateau complex. You can also visit festivals, concerts, exhibitions at the city gallery, or a historical festival organized every year, moderated by the historical personalities Zacharias of Hradec, and Katerina of Wallenstein.
Photo: Villa Tugendhat by David Židlický It is said that Brno is a living gallery of functionalist architecture, where not a single one of the important names of that era is missing. From Adlof Loose, who was born here, through Bohuslav Fuchs or Ernest Wiesner, to the German Ludwig Miese van der Rohe, the designer of the world famous Villa Tugendhat, a masterpiece of Functionalism from 1930, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The residential and utility rooms and the beautiful garden of this unique house, with its flowing space, are open to the public, and the villa offers a fantastic view to the city.
Together with the chateau, the city square constitutes a unique architectonic complex, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.
Bookings required. www.tugendhat.eu
Part of the undergrounds and underground corridors oriented toward the square were opened to the public in September 2014. Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340–1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted. (see p. 94–95)
Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360.

KONĚPRUSY CAVES
One of the most beautiful and best-preserved Gothic castles in Bohemia was built in the first half of the 14th century, and radically rebuilt in 1370. Part of the castle was rebuilt once again in the 16th century in the Renaissance style, and the entire castle was enlarged. The principal castle tower’s ground plan is trapezoidal, and that is why an observant person might be surprised to see all its four edges at once. Kost Castle is also remarkable for its location: it is one of just a few Czech castles it wasn’t built on the top of a hill, but rather at a meeting point of three valleys. During the Prussian-Austrian war, on the night of 28–29 June 1866, the castle was used for a military purpose for the last time, and proved its excellent defence value: the Austrian army successfully diverted two Prussian attacks. The castle has an interesting history, and has had many owners. Kost Castle is owned by the Kinsky family today. The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. KUTNÁHORA – UNESCO family member for 20 years Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, were included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not
miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, and the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city. A visit to the unique medieval silver mine offers an unforgettable experience; for your underground trip you will get a special stylish outfit. Art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral in the Jesuit college. More info at:
