DEAR FRIENDS! We are very pleased to see an evergrowing number of overseas visitors, heading to the Czech Republic for both the world-famous tourist attractions and the excellent Moravian and Bohemian wines. On the viticulture map of the world the Czech Republic doesn’t cover a very large area. However, it boasts high-quality local wines and unique products of Czech wine producers. Numerous awards from competitions around the globe have confirmed the high quality of their work. From a wide selection, you can chose vintage wines of diverse styles, varieties, colours, and bouquets. Six wine-growing sub-areas in Moravia and Bohemia spread across a countryside where you can see at first glance a life dedicated to viniculture and grapevines. Whether you are charmed by endless vineyards, little rural wine cellars, mysterious monastery cellars, wine cellar lanes, you will learn about the centurieslong viniculture tradition at every step. The Annual wine festivals and – above all – the grape harvest festivals represent ideal occasions to compare various wine styles, meet local wine producers, and strol through the wine-growing locales. Such festivals are accompanied by obligatory wine tasting, historical parades, fairs, local culinary specialities, and cultural programmes. If you are looking for an event combining all of the above-mentioned ingredients, you can choose from among any of the six winegrowing sub-areas and a great number of specific events. Vineyards and great wines can be found in Bohemia, both on the steep slopes along the river Labe and Berounka, and right in Prague. Attentive visitors can discover vineyards

in Troja and Vinohrady, and even in the very heart of the former Lands of the Czech Crown, the Prague Castle, where they can find the charming ambience of the St. Wenceslas Vineyard. There is a saying that good wine is best enjoyed in good company. We wish for you to visit Moravia and Bohemia in the best possible company, the company of good people and even better wines. Cheers! Your Editorial Board

He also laid the foundation stone of the St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle, and – together with other new buildings – he lifted up the castle complex to a higher level. Close to Prague, he also built the most famous Czech castle, Karlštejn.

The exhibition at the National Technical Museum in Prague brings visitors right to a construction site of the mid-14 th century, showing the erection of the fortification of the New Town of Prague, the building technology of the period, the trades and the work with great Gothic construction machines. The fortification wall of the New Town was 3.5 kilometers long and was built in 23 months. The exhibition hall presents an erected part of the structure, built with original technology and materials of the period. You can follow the whole construction process and its individual phases: quarrying the stone, its processing and transportation, and the erection of the wall itself. All the building crafts are documented, as well as the life of the carpenters, stonecutters, masons and smiths, and their tools. The construction boom of the period of Charles IV is also presented with fragments from other sites such as vault bolts from the St. Vitus Cathedral with its original polychromic, a fragment of a medieval gate from the Bečov castle in West Bohemia, and part of a sandstone window from Karlštejn. Functional replicas of great medieval construction machines like a wooden crane, and rammer for piling posts are exhibited in front of the museum. Everybody can see how sophisticated and still simple they were. (Open daily, closed on Mondays)

Dvořák Hall © Pražské jaro – Ivan Malý

(1912–1994) was one of the world‘s most important 20 th century pianists. His first musical steps were guided by Leoš Janáček, Vilem Kurz, and Josef Suk. He launched his brilliant career with a concert in New York, in 1941, when he was publicly supported by the greatest pianists of his time: Rudolf Serkin, Arthur Rubinstein, and Vladimir Horowitz. In 1946, he graced the first annual Prague Spring festival with three concerts. After the Communist putsch in Czechoslovakia in 1948, he chose to emigrate. The Czech public did not get another chance to hear him until 1990 when – after more than forty years – his symbolic first appearance in liberated Czechoslovakia took place again at Prague Spring, where he joined his old friend, the Czech conductor Rafael Kubelík, who also had returned back home after a long time. In 2016, the piano festival named after of Rudolf Firkušný is entering its fourth season. During its first three years, its history was written by such extraordinary figures as Yefim Bronfman, Emanuel Ax, Grigory Sokolov, Khatia Buniatishvili, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Giovanni Bellucci, and others. Among the Czech performers there have been Jitka Čechová, Lukáš Vondráček, Igor Ardašev, and Ivo Kahánek, whose fantastic performance with the Berlin Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle became the event of the 2014 music season in Prague. Year after year, the growing interest of the public has confirmed that the four piano concerts in a single week have gained a following and have drawn a concentrated selection of performances by outstanding yet quite diverse artists representing the foremost pianists of our time. Therefore, just like in past years, in 2016 the festival will again offer a 25% discoont with the purchase of tickets to all four festival concerts. Opera series: from Thrillers to Video Art One of the stars of the opera series will be the Canadian Director Robert Carsen, who will present his Katya Kabanova (7 and 9/10). Carsen’s original conception, with the entire stage covered in water, was created the Flemish Opera, and has been also performed at the Teatro alla Scala, in Milan, or Madrid’s Teatro Real. Carsen will be staging his opus with the Janáček opera NTB, the first opera house in the Czech Republic to include it in its core repertoire. Another treat pushing the boundaries of opera staging, in this case for its strong temperament, will be the performance of Janáček’s last opera, From the House of the Dead (12/10), by the State Theatre Nuremberg, directed by the controversial Calixto Bieito, from Catalonia. The trifecta of Janáček’s operas will be completed by Jenůfa, with the Tenor Jaroslav Březina, Thália Award winner for the role of Laca (18/10). Gothenburg Opera, directed by David Radok, will be presenting two one-act opera thrillers: Arnold Schönberg’s Expectation, with the great Katarina Karnéus, winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, and Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle (15 and 16/10). Fans of multimedia productions are invited to the Czech première of The Cave, a video-opera by Steve Reich and Beryl Korot (11/10), and children, to the charming production of Ravel’s The Child and the Spells, presented by the popular director duo SKUTR (14/10). The Arnold Schönberg Chor, from Vienna, is associated especially © Simon Fowler with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, with whom they received the prestigious Grammy Award in 2002 for their recording of Bach’s St Matthew Passion.

Ian Bostridge or Martina Janková?

The Diary of One Who Disappeared – Ian Bostridge 8/10 © Marek Olbrzymek

One of the highlights of this year’s festival will be the performance of Janáček’s The Diary of One Who Disappeared, by British Tenor Ian Bostridge (8/10), a phenomenal artist who’s had engagements with the New York’s Metropolitan Opera, London’s Covent Garden and Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, and has also worked with the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Boston and London Symphonic Orchestras; a perfect choice for this part. For the fans of untraditional projects, the festival will also present a staging of The Diary performed by Opera Povera, in cooperation with Opera Bergen (13 and 14/10). The Chamber Series will include two recitals in the exclusive setting of Villa Tugendhat: an evening of song with this year’s debutante at La Scala, the Soprano Martina Janková (10/10), and a recital of Ivo Kahánek (14/10), the only Czech pianist after Rudolf Firkušný to have performed with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Jazz Goes to Janáček

Yes, Janáček has also inspired jazz players! Didrik Ingvaldsen Orchestra will present a jazz arrangement of Janáček’s Sinfonietta (15/10). Marta Töpferová, described by the London Times as “one of the most charming interpreters of Latin American folk music”, will perform with the Milokraj ensemble a selection of Janáček’s Moravian Folk Poetry in Songs and Silesian Songs (16/10). This alternative series wouldn’t be complete without some traditional Janáček’s interpreters like singer Iva Bittová or Emil Viklický.

NATIONAL GALLERY PRAGUE National Gallery in Prague Emperor Charles IV (1316–1378) – Bavarian-Czech state Exhibition on the Occasion of the 700th Birthday

and private collections. Artistic ventures of Charles IV and members of his imperial court, which were undertaken in Prague, Nuremberg, Aachen, Frankfurt am Main or in any other artistic centre of the Holy Roman Empire will be displayed alongside their inspirational models of Byzantine, Italian or French origin.

15 May – 25 September 2016 Waldstein Riding School Daily except Monday 10 am–6 pm The organizers of the exhibition are the National Gallery in Prague and Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte, in cooperation with Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas an der Universität Leipzig.

Charles IV, votive fragment

This significant exhibition will present the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the Czech King Charles IV as a unique figure of Europe’s political and cultural history; a pious, well-educated, single-minded and judicious ruler, who did not hesitate to use a wide range of diplomatic means. One of the typical features of Charles’ ruling concept was the programmatic use of arts and architecture to promote the imperial majesty. Charles IV has gone down in history as one of the most generous patrons of the arts, as well as one of the most often depicted rulers in mediaeval Europe’s history. Antependium with Jesus and Throne of Devine Mercy

The exhibition will be accompanied by a large multifarious program of activities in both venues, Prague and Nuremberg. The viewers will be able to see a number of exhibition projects in the partner museum institutions in Bohemia and Bavaria; they will be able to follow in Charles IV’s footsteps in the places linked with his life and admire the royal architecture and art in their original milieus.

The exhibition seeks to show Charles IV devoid of distorting layers of ideological prejudice, and offer to the public a multi-faceted portrait of the historical figure with his positive as well as negative qualities. Charles IV will be presented against the kaleidoscopic background of a broad contemporary cultural-historical 14th-century context. The admirable prosperity of arts and architecture of Charles IV will be set in this historical context with conspicuous overlaps to the present. How did his contemporaries perceive him? Where did he get the money for the spectacular and costly imperial presentation? How were the holy relics acquired and what was the role of arts in the service of his imperial policy? Who were the people who acted in the Emperor’s name and secured the support he needed?

Crown of Charles IV from the coronation of the Holy Roman King in Bohemia

The exhibition seeks answers to such questions through 170 exhibits of all disciplines in art, culturalhistorical documents loaned by more than a hundred prestigious European and U.S. museums, churches

NATIONAL GALLERY PRAGUE National Gallery in Prague Three Centuries of American Prints from the National Gallery of Art in Washington 5 October 2016 – 8 January 2017 Trade Fair Palace

The U.S. Embassy in Prague provides auspices for the exhibition “Three Centuries of American Prints from the National Gallery of Art in Washington”.

The exhibition Three Centuries of American Prints from the National Gallery of Artin Washington offers a broad perspective on the history of American print production, from its outset, at the beginning of the 18 th century, until the present. The 140 prints on display represent graphic art production from the colonial and the Revolution periods, to iconic works of the 20 th century. The exhibition introduces works by artists such as John Simon, James McNeill Whistler, Fanny Palmer, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, George Bellows, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, or Jackson Pollock.

Conception: Amy Johnston, Judith Brodie (National Gallery of Art) Andy Warhol: Marilyn Monroe

The exhibition comes to the National Gallery in Prague from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, where its curators, Amy Johnston and Judith Brodie, have been working on the exhibition’s preparation. The catalogue contains a comprehensive study by Professor Michael Lewis, from Williams College, and thirteen texts by curators, academics, historians, art historians and American-culture experts.

Against Nature: Young Czech Art Scene 5 October 2016 – 15 January 2017 Trade Fair Palace Open daily except Monday, 10 am–6 pm

Exhibiting artists: Alžběta Bačíková, David Fesl, Ondřej Filípek, Kateřina Holá, Martin Lukáč, Tatiana Nikulina, Ondřej Petrlík, Johana Pošová, Anna Ročňová, Lucie Rosenfeldová, Martina Smutná, Rudolf Skopec, Viktorie Valocká.

Against Nature is a survey of the emerging scene in the Czech Republic curated by Edith Jerabkova and Chris Sharp. After conducting several dozen studio visits with young artists, the one thing that struck them the most was an emphasis on making, the hand made, and thinking through materials while working in more traditional media, such as painting, sculpture and photography. Additionally, the materials the artists used tended to be, if not natural, then materials that had a history. Of course the assumption here is that the emerging art scene is dominated by an interest in the natural. But just what is natural? How is that defined? And in contrast to what? In a period in history when the very notion of nature and the so-called natural is so mediated as to be unrecoverable, the artists in this exhibition collectively participate in a very contemporary dilemma. Representative of the effervescent developments of the emerging scene in the Czech Republic, this timely gathering of artists also addresses a number of sociopolitical issues accompanying the production of contemporary art in general today.

Paintings by Lucas Cranach and His Circle from the Collections of the National Gallery in Prague The exhibition “Cranach from All Sides” will present the German Renaissance painter and his circle not only via unique works from the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, but also via the most interesting results of research conducted by a team of experts from the Cranach Digital Archive Düsseldorf, headed by Gunnar Heydenreich. The group of the Prague works linked with the artist’s name is extraordinarily heterogeneous and includes very attractive and popular scenes such as The Old Fool, Christ and the Adulteress and The Original Sin (Adam and Eve). The research has revealed many yet unknown facts about these and other works, as well as information about their technological process and, especially their copies. The exhibition in the Sternberg Palace will introduce visitors to the most recent discoveries linked with the most precious works held by the National Gallery in Prague, and also present the Cranach work-

In his paintings he anticipated or resolved similar problems as Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Frida Kahlo, etc. He was highlighted as a source of inspiration in particular by the group known as Der Blaue Reiter, headed by Vassily Kandinsky.

This exhibition has been realised in cooperation with the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, on the basis of a concept prepared by Gabriella Belli (Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia) and Guy Cogeval (Musée d’Orsay). The authors place Rousseau in the context of other, no less famous artists and try to trace the stimuli linked with archaism, classicism and his original vision of realism. The National Gallery in Prague will present Henri Rousseau in the autumn of 2016, after the exhibition in the Musée d’Orsay has closed. 28 September 2016 – 8 January 2017 The House at Stone Bell (U Kamenného zvonu) Old Town Square Open Tue–Sun, 10 am–8 pm The exhibition presents one of the most significant personalities of Czech sculpture of the 20 th century. Jaroslav Horejc created work that is invaluable in the scene of the Czech fine arts. However, it has remained a solitary closed perspective with no followers. Even his peers appreciated his universality, which had an impact on sculpture and other fields like applied art and architecture. There were some monographic exhibitions of this interesting personality in the 1970s – initiated and organized in 1971 by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and, in 1976/77, by the Gallery of the Capital City Prague. Both institutions

have joined forces to put together a new exhibition, the first of its kind. The year of its opening symbolizes two anniversaries: 130 years of the birth of the artist, and 40 years since his last exhibition in the Gallery of the Capital City Prague at the Old Town Hall.

Czech figural sculpture in the period between the 1890s to the First World War achieved high artistic quality, entirely comparable with modern European works. The coming exhibition maps out these historical events on characteristic examples from the oeuvres of its leading representatives. The dynamic artistic development was launched by Josef Václav Myslbek, and further progressed with the younger

generations, in artists such as František Bílek, Stanislav Sucharda, Josef Mařatka, Quido Kocián, Bohumil Kafka, Ladislav Šaloun, Jan Štursa and many others.

L. Kofránek: Dreaming, 1904 Their achievements are confronted with the distinctive examples from the oeuvres of foreign sculptors who had largely influenced the Czech progress in art with their Prague exhibitions (Auguste Rodin, Constantin Meunier, Antoine Bourdelle). These works, in the form of loans from international museums, will significantly enrich the exhibition’s profile, turning this project into an extraordinary event in the local context. The exhibition aims at reviving the interest of the Czech public in the extraordinarily high-quality chapter of Czech cultural tradition and at highlighting certain elements, which may well serve as an inspiration for the present time.

Chateau Mitrowicz At the very beginning of the 18 th century, Count František Wratislav of Mitrowicz purchased a 140-year-old Renaissance noble mansion, which his descendants would rebuild in Baroque style. They expanded the living rooms, added a chapel and decorated the interiors with murals. The Wratislav family lived on the banks of the South-Bohemian river Lužnice until the 1940s. The following years only brought gradual degradation. After a demanding and painstaking restoration that took seven years, the chateau has been opened once again, and 8,500 plants and 50 trees were planted to restore the park. You can visit the interiors with the restored murals or spend here your wedding day with a reception and lodging, celebrate a birthday, spend a vacation with your family or host a corporate event. Visitors can also use the new marina for their boats or take a boat trip directly to the chateau. The journey crosses the rivers Vltava and Lužnice, starting in the nearby city of Týn nad Vltavou. WINE ANDViticulture VITICULTURE IN PRAGUE Wine and in Prague Region We offer you one way to spend a pleasant time in Prague Region – visit one of the vineyards and sample local wine during one of the numerous vintage. You may be surprised, but in Prague and its surroundings they really do grow grapes and produce wine, in several vineyards. The Bohemia wine region is one of the northernmost viniculture localities in Europe. The Mělník subdivision, which also includes vineyards in Prague, Mělník and Karlštejn, is one of two wine-growing areas in Bohemia. Prague lies on 50° N latitude, like Wiesbaden in Rhineland, Germany. Although, we cannot precisely date the beginnings of the cultivation of varietal grapes on the land of what is today Prague Region, there is documentation indicating that there were vineyards back in the days

of the rule of King Wencelsas II, in the 12 th century. Under the government of the Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV (1316–1378), thanks to his decree of 1358 on the establishment of vineyards, all suitable land (southern slopes) was planted with vines. He founded vineyards under his most famous castle, Karlštejn, as well as on the slopes where you can find the Mělník chateau today. Grapevines have been grown there uninterruptedly ever since.

Under the rule of Emperor Rudolf II (1552–1616) viniculture enjoyed its greatest boom, and, with its 720 hectares of vineyards, Prague became known as the “City of Wine”. Today Prague’s vineyards cover about 12 hectares, but all boast centuries-long histories and rich traditions that survive to this day. There are now just six vineyards that remind us of the past glory of Prague’s viniculture: St. Klara’s and the Salabka in Troja, Máchalka in Vysočany, Gröbovka in Vinohrady, the Arcibiskupská vineyard in Modřany and the St. Wenceslas Vineyard in Prague Castle. Not many people would search in the heart of a European metropolis for an idyllic vineyard. Within the Prague castle

complex can be found one of the oldest vineyards in the Czech lands. Its ancient tradition dates back to the 10 th century, to the origins of Czech statehood. The unique location of the complex on the eastern rock spur under Prague Castle, offers unique and immaculate panoramic views of the most beautiful parts of Prague. You will also find vineyards near Prague on the banks of the Vltava, Labe, and Berounka rivers. When traveling to Prague and the Czech Republic, you should not miss such wonderful experiences.

Cheers!

Royal Gardens of the Prague Castle Production gardens of the Prague Castle 17 and 18 September 2016

Winegrowing at the Prague Castle has a tradition that dates back to more than millennium. The current tradition was renovated in the 1920s by the architect Josip Plečnik, during the works that modified the Castle as the seat for the first Czechoslovak President, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. In 2006, the Prague Castle Administration came up with the idea to organize the first modern “Prague Castle Vintage”. This year visitors to the traditional vintage can look forward to fresh grape juice pressed with a historical manual press replica, original Moravian fermenting wine, wine tasting at the Prague Castle Ballgame Room, tasting and sales of top-quality Czech food bearing the Klasa and Regional Food labels, and access to the production gardens, where thousands of orchids, anturias, the gerberas, and other flowers are grown to decorate castle at special official events. The Vintage at Prague Castle includes a representative exhibition of best Bohemian and Moravian still and sparkling wines. SWETT CHOCOLATE FAIRY Sweet moments with a chocolate fairy

In 2008, the company Viva Praha – The Finest Belgian Chocolate opened a retail store with the best Belgian chocolate in the very center of Prague, just a few steps from the Old Town Square, in Celetná. The store specializes in Belgian chocolate, hand-made by the best chocolatiers from the chocolate capital, Bruges, in Belgium. The freshness of chocolate plays a great role, and that is why at the Viva store you can find only the best products imported directly from artisan producers. Together with classical chocolate products, such as pralines, figures, and bars, at the Viva store you can also buy novelties of the chocolate world, for example chocolate with high content of antioxidants, organic chocolate, and pralines with unusual flavors and combinations. Those who do not like chocolate can enjoy nougat, marzipan, or homemade fudge. Right at the store, while sitting over a cup of coffee in the Jungle bar, you can enjoy cakes, original Belgian wafers, fresh fruits dipped in chocolate, and the original hot chocolate that boasts several awards. The selection is now also supplemented with a section of Belgian beer specialties. Besides chocolate, the store produces the so-called “Rock Candy”. The store has tables prepared for the manufacture of this treat, so you can see the process, which dates back more than 400 years. The store is joined to the ChocoStory chocolate museum – a member of an international network of museums with branches in Bruges, Paris, and Mexico. In the museum you can dive into the 3,000-year-old history of chocolate. You can learn when, where, and who used it for the first time, who brought it to Europe, how it spread, and how it is made today. You can also learn that chocolate is good for your health, and remember the good old times over a collection of chocolate wraps. In the showroom, our chocolatiers will show how pralines are made; and you can also taste them or to try the work with the chocolate yourselves in one of the workshops. Along with that you can see the largest chocolate cascade in the Czech Republic. In Celetná 10, you can dive into the fabulous world of chocolate and candy with all your senses.

This Gothic Cathedral, which was built over nearly six centuries, was finally completed in 1929. In the 10th century a rotunda originally stood in its place. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parléř, who also built the St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is adorned with frescoes and semi-precious stones; in the catacombs underneath there are tombs of Czech kings.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m2. The site of the castle was established in the 9th century, and in the 12th century the Romanesque palace was built. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the last reconstruction of the Royal Palace was carried out under the rule of the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, At that time (1497 to 1500) the famous Vladislav Hall was built in the late Gothic style. The castle was enlarged in the 16th century following the great fire in 1541. After World War I, the interior and gardens of the castle were redesigned by the architect J. Plečnik. The castle is the seat of the president of the republic and the historical and political centre of the city and the state. The changing of the guards takes place at Prague Castle every hour on the hour from 5:00 am to 10 pm. The guard changes at noon are accompanied by a solemn fanfare. See the map on page 50. It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many wellpreserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a four purpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is located, there used to be a vineyard and a utility garden in 1517. “Aspects of Alice” is a classical Black Light Theatre performance based on motifs of “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. Audiences in more than 30 countries on three continents have admired this theatrical performance for its imaginativeness, poetics, and perfect technical tricks. With a help of your imagination, Alice will go through all the beautiful and sweet moments of maturing, first loves, awakening adultery, knowledge of life, laughs, tears, joy, and sorrow. All of it takes place against the background of ancient Prague, its architectural jewels, its rich history, and Prague as a crossroads of Christian and Jewish cultures. Large-screen projections, animated film, puppets, unique on-stage tricks, black theatre effects, beautiful contemporary and classical music, and your imagination unite in a breathtaking show unseen in any other theatre.

Daily at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

TIME COFFEE… Time forFOR Coffee…

For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends, artists, journalists, and students. Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee.

The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and delicious espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too.

The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.”

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360. ČESKÝ KRUMLOV … a treasure trove full of history and arts Český Krumlov has been spinning its story for over 700 years, and each century has added a unique trait into its features. The result is a picturesque town proud of its architectural beauty and magical atmosphere.

Český Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a lively, cosmopolitan town with a unique atmosphere surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Dominated by a Castle stretching over the meandering Vltava River, Český Krumlov’s narrow cobblestone streets wind along romantic nooks between patrician houses, where you’ll find attractive exhibits of world-renown artists, music festivals, concerts, and theatre performances. The cosy inns, coffee shops, and ancient taverns entertain a diverse international crowd.

Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340–1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted. (see p. 100–101)

LITOMYŠL

Třebíč is a picturesque town with rich history and a lot of valuable architectural monuments. The most remarkable have been included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List – the St. Procopius Basilica and the Jewish Quarter with the Jewish Cemetery.

Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre, you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. Other places worth a visit are the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, with a lookout tower and the exhibition Angels on the Hill, and the former Bishop’s Gymnasium, which today houses a successfully restored museum. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest.

The Basilica, built in the Romanesque style with some early Gothic features, is one of the treasures of medieval architecture. The most valuable part of the Basilica is the crypt. The Jewish Quarter is the only evidence of Jewish culture outside the territory of Israel included in the UNESCO list and it’s a unique complex of 123 buildings, among them the Front and Rear Synagogue, and the Seligmann Bauer’s House, with an exhibition of a typical Jewish household.

TELČ Telč is one of the most sought-after cultural destinations, where you can pleasantly spend your free time. You can visit historical landmarks and the Telč undergrounds, now open to the public, located below most of the houses on the Zacharias of Hradec square and part of the chateau complex. You can also visit festivals, concerts, exhibitions at the city gallery, or a historical festival organized every year, moderated by the historical personalities Zacharias of Hradec, and Katerina of Wallenstein.

Photo: Villa Tugendhat by David Židlický It is said that Brno is a living gallery of functionalist architecture, where not a single one of the important names of that era is missing. The residential and utility rooms and the beautiful garden of this unique house, with its flowing space, are open to the public, and the villa offers a fantastic view to the city.

Together with the chateau, the city square constitutes a unique architectonic complex, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

The towns of Lednice and Valtice are located in the heart of the Lednice-Valtice Complex, which in 1996 was included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites. They offer a lot of cultural and sports activities. The surroundings are criss-crossed with cycling trails, where you can admire the uniqueness, charm and history of the region. Lednice is a popular tourist destination thanks to its fairy-tale château and the surrounding landscape. Though, in recent years, also thanks to its successfully developing spas. The main therapeutic source are the mineral waters rich in iodine-bromide sourced from a nearby well. Thanks to its iodine contents, its quality is one of the best of its type in Europe. In 2009, the Lednice Spas were granted the status of therapeutic spa.

The Kroměříž Flower Garden ranks among the most significant gardening masterpieces worldwide, these days being practically the only representation of such kind in Europe. The Flower garden has two main parts – the flower bank with shaped walls and broderiebeds, and the garden nursery with the Strawberry Hills. Every year, the beds in front of the colonnade in the flower bank are planted with twenty thousand summerannuals, grown in greenhouses and hot-beds directly in the Flower Garden.

St. Barbara’s Cathedral

KUTNÁHORA – UNESCO family member for 21 years Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, and the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city. Italian Court and St. James’ Church

“Hrádek” (Little Castle), one of the most famous burghers’ houses in Kutná Hora, houses today the Czech Museum of Silver, with exhibitions on silver mining. The museum regularly appears on leading positions of TripAdvisor travelers’ surveys. Once again, it received the Certificate of Excellence in 2015. The museum also offers a tour through an original medieval silver mine, the St. George drift. Visitors are equipped with medieval mining gear, a helmet and torch. The drift is 35 meters deep, and 250 meters long. During the tour, visitors also pass by rooms filled with crystal clear water. Art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral in the Jesuit college.

NATIONAL STUD KLADRUBY The National Stud Kladruby nad Labem – a unique cultural landmark of the PARDUBICE

REGION

1 The National Stud Kladruby nad Labem, the oldest stud farm in Europe, is the home of a unique horse breed – the Kladruber. The farm itself and its surroundings are cultural landmarks and a place of interest of the Pardubice Region. It is located at about 90 km east of Prague. 2

Emperor Maxmilian II purchased a homestead with a little chateau, farmhouses and a horse range from Jaroslav of Pernštejn, in 1563. In 1579, Emperor Rudolph II made the complex the official imperial stud farm. The cultivation of the surrounding landscape began already during the Pernštejn period, when a marsh was drained using a sophisticated system. Besides the stables, meadows and pastures were

sown, woods planted and breeding farms and farm houses were built, as well as an irrigation system, of which the Opatovice canal is the oldest, and still functioning technical landmark. The original Czech horse breed, the Kladruber, original from here, is unique in the world the only breed assigned for the ceremonial needs of the royal court;

in particular, the white horses, while the black horses were used by church dignitaries. The white Kladruber horse was proclaimed a National Cultural Landmark of the Czech Republic in 2002, making it one of the few living creatures in the world that has received this acknowledgement. The Kladruber horse and the National Stud Kladruby nad Labem are part of the Czech cultural heritage. The horses fill their

4 original ceremonial function at the Swedish and Danish royal courts. Between 2014 and 2015, the stud complex underwent extensive renovations that included adjacent homesteads FrantiĹĄkov and Josefov, the chateau, the St. Wenceslas and

Leopold church, the chariot shed, the harness shop, the water tower, the forester’s house, the Holy Cross chapel, the facades of the mansions, and some external areas. The new shape of the interiors will undoubtedly draw the attention of visitors as they are dedicated to the Imperial Couple – Franz Joseph I and his wife Elisabeth, known as Sissi, who stayed several times at the Kladruby chateau. They stopped here on their way to Prague or to take part in the popular parforce huntings. The stud complex, along with the stables, farm houses, breeding yards, and cultivated surroundings have been serving the same purpose uninterruptedly for several centuries, and constitute a unique cultural landmark. In 2017, an application will be

5 submitted to include it in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. Come and enjoy the beauty of noble animals and the landscape. You are cordially welcome!
