THE MUSEUM OF LIFE The Czech Republic boasts hundreds of museums of the most diverse kind. You can find not only carefully preserved memorabilia from the country’s rich history, but also, thanks to the latest technology, a connection with the context of the present and the future. Now, after two years, this also includes an institution with a long tradition, the National Museum of Agriculture. Soon after the independence of the Czechoslovak Republic in October 1918, an existing association was transformed into the Czechoslovak Museum of Agriculture, one of the most progressive museums at the time. The project for a new main building in Letná, Prague, was initiated in the 1930s. Today, it is an important monument of Czech Functionalism and itself an experience for visitors. At the beginning of the 1960s, the museum’s collections were moved to the Hunting Château Ohrada, the merger in Hluboká nad Vltavou. Thanks to merger with the Forestry and Hunting Museum, founded by Jan Adolf Schwarzenberg II, in 1842, the collection of the museum was enriched with extraordinary and unique objects. The Museum of Agriculture now has the extraordinary chance to carry on with the tradition of the fourth oldest museum in the Czech lands and probably the oldest of its kind in Europe. In 1994, the National Museum of Agriculture returned to Prague, to its original building, and its gradual rehabilitation started immediately after. Today, it focuses on agriculture,

forestry, game management, fishing, gardening, the food industry, the processing of agricultural products, rural development and cultural landscapes. In addition to the building in Letná, Prague 7, it has four other branches: the already mentioned Château Ohrada, specialised in forestry, game management and fishing; Empire Château Kacˇina, with exhibitions focusing on the Czech countryside; Cˇáslav, with agricultural machinery, and Valtice, which shows the history and present of Czech winemaking, gardening and landscape. The National Museum of Agriculture presents itself today in a completely new form. The revitalisation, as its authors call it, includes not only the renovations of the main building, but also a change in its concept and spirit. “With my team of colleagues, we decided to bring new life to the institution, which will be on a superb level, and will present, in an interesting way, agriculture as the basis of everything and as an exceptional socio-economic phenomenon. I’m convinced that we have taken the right way, and that at the end of it, the Revitalisation will become a Revival, and that the National Museum of Agriculture will become the Museum of Life,” said General Director Milan Jan Pu°cˇek. Organized by the Prague Castle Administration and The Mánes Union of Fine Arts.

However, the curators are also interested in the background of this revolution, the onsets of impressionism as well as its reminiscences, and the later reactions in the Czech painting scene of the 20 th century.

This exhibition presents more than 500 artworks representing the various phases of the evolution of Impressionism. In large sets of works, Czech artists are represented by Antonín Slavíček, Václav Radimský, Ludvík Kuba, Oldřich Blažíček, Antonín Hudeček, Joža Uprka, and Max Švabinský. Light as a phenomenon directly defines, or at least influences the character of the picture. The impression of reality painted with fragmented brush strokes and unbroken pure colours is the most significant sign of whimsy. Beaming colors excluding black, and the technique

The concept of the exhibition aims at the both domestic and foreign public at large, and also offers numerous touching occasions to discover unknown pictures mentioned in old literature, or known only from pre-war publications. RUDOLF FIRKUŠNÝ Rudolf Firkušný PianoFESTIVAL Festival 19 November – 28 November 2017 5 th Edition Dvořák Hall, Rudolfinum, Praque, 7:30 pm www.firkusny.cz About the festival The piano festival bearing the name of Rudolf Firkušný enters its 5 th edition in 2017. During its first four years, its history was written by personalities like Yefim Bronfman, Emanuel Ax, Grigory Sokolov, Sir András Schiff, Garrick Ohlsson, and Giovanni Belluci. The Czech artists included Lukáš Vondráček, Jitka Čechová, Martin Kasík, Igor Adrašev, and Ivo Kahánek, whose fantastic performance with the Berlin Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle became the top event of the Prague musical season of 2014. The interest of the audience, which grows every year, is proof that the four piano evenings in one week have found numerous enthusiasts attracted by the high concentration of excellent and diverse performances of contemporary top-class artists. This year’s edition has prepared a great set of pianists, each with their own attitude towards inter-

Rudolfinum, Dvořák Hall pretation: the living legend Andrei Gavrilov, the master of the tiniest musical detail Pierre-Laurent Aimard, David Fray, an outstanding representative of the young generation, and one of the most peculiar representatives of the Czech piano school, Tomáš Víšek, who will also present a work from the composition heritage of Rudolf Firkušný. This year’s novelty is a concert dedicated to fourhand playing, presented by the dashing sister duo of Khatia and Gvantsa Buniatishvili.

About the artists Andrei Gavrilov His unique attitude has made Gavrilov one of the most peculiar pianists of our times. Already at the age of 18, he won his first award at the prestigious Tchaikovski Competition in Moscow, followed by a performance at the festival in Salzburg. His debut at the Carnegie Hall evoked great interest, and the critics weren’t short of superlatives: “He plays not merely the piano but the music – with touching sense for lyric delivery; he is generous and sensitive toward the pedal. His dynamic scale starts with tiny pianissimo and ends with mighty soft fortissimo.” (New York Times) This artist, heavily persecuted by the KGB in the 1970s, will present in Prague works by Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt.

David Fray “Chopin is fragile, maybe even untouchable”, says the pianist whose last recording is dedicated to works of the “poet of piano”; and his sensitive style has earned him the same nickname by the critics. An exclusive artist of the Erato/Warner Classics recording company who received the Gramophone Editor’s Choice award for his recordings of works by Franz Schubert; his album with Bach’s and Boulez’s compositions was considered the best recording of the year. After his Berlin recital, the German magazine Tagesspiegel critic wrote:

“Nothing seems to be pre-prepared; every repetition appears in a new light. Even after four encores, visitors hesitated to leave the concert hall.”

Tomáš Víšek

His extensive repertoire, continually enriched by his search for new ideas, allows for programs of famous works of world music and undeservedly forgotten © Paolo Roversi composers and compositions, always with a great response by the audience. He is a winner of a special Janina Nawrocka Award from the prestigious Fryderyk Chopin International Competition, in Warsaw. His piano recital at the Prague Spring 1997, as well as other festival appearances in 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2014, were very well received. He has repeatedly performed as soloist in Grieg’s Piano Concerto in Musikverein in Vienna.

The fresh Ernst von Siemens Music Prize Award 2017 laureate, for his special contribution to classical music, is considered to be a key personality of the contemporary musical world. His rich concert and recording activities have been awarded several times with the ECHO Klassik and the Grammy. His recording of The Art of Fuga, by Johann Sebastian Bach, got the Diapason d’Or Award and was several weeks the bestseller Classical in iTunes. His second appearance at this festival stays faithful to his beloved Bach – the Prague audience can look forward to his Goldberg’s Variations.

Khatia and Gvantsa Buniatishvili

Khatia is a winner of the prestigious ECHO Klassik and Borletti-Buitoni Trust Awards. Her dashing style cannot hide her Georgian background and subdues the hearts of listeners all over the world. As the press put it after her first appearance at the Rudolf Firkušný Piano Festival, in 2015: “It was fascinating. I have probably never ever seen such technique with another pianist. She played even the most difficult parts with lightness and carelessness; on top of everything, in all those diabolically difficult compositions, she showed an unusual portion of musicality.” This time, she is going to perform with her older sister Gvantsa, presenting works for two pianos. © Tosca Media © Marco Borggreve + DG

NATIONAL GALLERY PRAGUE National Gallery in Prague The Mythological Misalliances of Max Pirner 5 September – 3 December 2017 Trade Fair Palace The Graphic Kabinet of the National Gallery presents a cycle of pastels by one of the most original Czech artists active in the Czech lands in the last third of the 19 th century. Pirner, in his Mythological Misalliances, fuses various influences – the sensuality and eroticism of Josef Mánes, the fairy-tale romanticism of Moritz von Schwind, and the decorativism of Hans Makart. The individual paintings of the cycle illustrate the emotional intersections between various fantastic and mythological creatures, and their expression oscillates along the line between naturalism and decadence. The selection from the 12-part cycle is accompanied by varied comparative material, encompassing not only other drawings by Pirner himself, but also works on related subjects by the artist’s predecessors and contemporaries, such as Josef Mánes, Beneš Knüpfer and Max Švabinský.

Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–1677) left the Czech lands for England in 1636 to become a servant of Lord Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel and Surrey, who was a pre-eminent art collector. Hollar catalogued Arundel’s rich collections, at the same time creating renditions of his seat and the surrounding landscape. He also published a portrait of his donor. With the outbreak of the English Civil War, Hollar replaced England for Antwerp, in 1646, and continued to produce works of the same kind prolifically, creating numerous prints based on the works held in the Lord’s collections. These were, for example, his famous series with butterflies and other insects and a cycle of rendered designs for applied arts from Hans Holbein. Hollar, however, also worked for the members of the royal House of Stuart and other commissioners from the circles of the royal court and the Earl of Arundel. Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria. A Renaissance Ruler and Art Patron between Prague and Innsbruck 3 November 2017 – 25 February 2018 Waldstein Riding School In 2017, 470 years have elapsed since the arrival in Bohemia of Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria (1529 –1595), the son of Ferdinand I, King of Bohemia and Hungary, to represent the entire Habsburg dynasty. The same year also marks the 450 th anniversary of the archduke’s assumption of rule over Tyrol. Significant jubilees that launched a large exhibition Ferdinand II. 450 Jahre Tiroler Landesfürst in Ambras Castle in Innsbruck and a subsequent one in the National Gallery in Prague. The two exhibitions are jointly sponsored by Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, National Gallery in Prague, and Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Beginning in 1547, Archduke Ferdinand II stayed in the Czech lands, playing an important role in the political and social life. One important task was the reconstruction of the royal residence – Prague Castle. He also holds a significant place in history as an avid collector. He built one of the largest libraries of the time in Central Europe, a vast cabinet of curiosities inspired by Italian magnates, and an outstanding collection of armour belonging to famous men. The archduke’s example inspired many Czech aristocrats including his nephew, the future Emperor Rudolf II, whose pastimes were similar. Both the exhibitions, in Ambras Castle and the Waldstein Riding School in Prague, have a common theme. Visitors will see more than three hundred exhibits of various kinds, from paintings, precious arts and crafts objects, Renaissance armour, and valuable documents,

Francesco Terzio, Portrait of Archduke Ferdinand II to products of nature and curiosities from his collections, as well as everyday objects of the archduke and his family. More than half of the exhibits are lent from foreign collections. Loans from Czech institutions will be similarly exceptional. The exhibition not only seeks to introduce the archduke to the public as a historic figure strongly connected with the destiny of the Czech lands and the Renaissance art, but also as a man with personal relationships and interests. CITYGallery GALLERY PRAGUE City Prague Jaroslav Róna 1997–2017

23 June – 29 October 2017 The Stone Bell House, Prague 1 Tue–Sun 10 am–8 pm Jaroslav Róna (*1957) first became known to the broad cultural public as a co-founder of the most notable Czech artistic collective of the generation of the 1980s, the Tvrdohlaví (“Hardheaded”) group. Still as its member, Róna already came to stand apart as a distinctively individual figure incompatible with

any of the dominant trends of that time, a fact which was also convincingly evidenced by his first major solo exhibition, staged by GHMP at The Stone Bell House, in 1997. This new exhibition, linking up chronologically with his work dating from 1997, brings together his sculptures and paintings produced over the last twenty years. In a special section, it will likewise feature video-installations acquainting visitors with the artist’s outdoor realizations, some of which have attracted exceptional public attention, occasionally sparking off exacerbated polemics and controversial response.

Stone, Stucco and Terracotta / Sculpture from Prague Gardens 3 May – 31 October 2017 Troja Château, Prague 7 An integral part of Prague’s historical gardens was their artistic decoration and small-scale architecture. The various sculptures and decorative elements told either their own stories, or drew attention to the status and personal likings of a site’s owner. Exposed over long decades to the follies of the weather, these artefacts gradually disappeared from their locations. While some have been irretrievably lost, others have been replaced by reproductions. The Troja Château presents a selection of original sculptures from the Vrtba Garden or the Cibulka landscape park, along with surviving fragments of Troja Château’s own early Baroque garden statuary, and specimens from the Kinsky Garden, plus an array of busts from the Portheimka

summer retreat. The show’s title relates to the favourite materials used in garden decoration, as well as to the fragmentariness and coarse condition of the exhibits, which have been kept in museum repositories in the same condition as they were found, usually without being restored for display purposes.

MUSEUM KAMPA Museum Kampa Manolo Blahnik – The Art of Shoes

11 August – 12 November 2017

can blend into something seemingly down-to-earth like women’s shoes. Blahnik’s skill, care and inspiration from the world of art and film result in wearable works that combine retro styles of several cult eras of the twentieth century with Rococo playfulness and sensuality. The resulting shapes, forms, traceries and arabesques draw their influence from many images and symbols of female beauty and fate: Marie Antoinette, Queen Elizabeth and innumerable strong but vulnerable women from the Italian neo-realism. The shoes, whether inspired by art, ethnic elements Museum Kampa has prepared an exhibition of a wizard among shoemakers, Mr. Manolo Blahnik, famous thanks to the TV series Sex in the City and Sophia Coppola’s film Marie Antoinette. Blahnik grew up on the Canary Islands and lives in the UK, though he has Czech roots. His father was a Czech national who worked as a chemist in Prague before WWII, and he could still be working here if it hadn’t been for Nazism. His work is documents how freely art, abstraction, the works of Mondrian and Kupka, or the hand of Velazquez, or Visconti’s creative obsession with aristocracy or nature, carry modern energy and thanks to them, since the 1970s, the scene has been taken over by a modern woman who is as professional as she is beautiful, striding cultures with a strong sense of individuality, just like Manolo Blahnik, a world-renowned creator with Czech roots and a global outlook, able to bring interesting views and a unique experience. Manolo Blahnik will be in person to open the exhibition. “The opportunity to have an exhibition in Prague is a very personal thing for me,” says Manolo Blahnik, “my dad was Czech and I’m really looking forward to this installation and to working with people who have the same roots as I.” More information on:

NATIONAL THEATRE National Theatre Un ballo in maschera

The Prague audience first saw the piece on 30 June 1869. The opera was performed in Czech translation at the New Town Theatre. The new Prague’s production will be staged by the music director of the National Theatre Opera, Jaroslav Kyzlink, who has recently shown his flair for Verdi’s work in the productions of Simon Boccanegra and Don Carlo and Dominik Beneš, who has directed the National Theatre productions of the operas The Nightingale and Iolanta. Such a splendid creative team promises a visually impressive experience.

Giuseppe Verdi

Premiered on 5 & 7 October 2017 The National Theatre Prague Giuseppe Verdi often found inspiration for his operas in the works of renowned writers and dramatists, including William Shakespeare, Friedrich Schiller, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, and Eugène Scribe, one of the most distinguished 19th-century playwrights and librettists. His text for the French opera Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué served in 1857 as the basis for the libretto to Verdi’s new opera, which would enter history under the title Un ballo in maschera. The circumstances under which the opera came into being and was staged were affected by political events and subsequent censorship, as a result of which Verdi has to change the piece’s original title, Gustavo III, as well as the names of the characters. In this transformed version, the opera received its premiere on 17 February 1859, at the Teatro Apollo in Rome.

MUSEUM DECORATIVE ARTS Museum of OF Decorative Arts in Prague

After two years, the renovations and the rehabilitation of the main building of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague have been completed.

The library, with the restored historical furniture, on the ground floor of the north wing, has been modernised to meet modern standards.

Visitors will again be able to admire the permanent exhibitions of the museum’s rich collections, which include objects of crystal, porcelain, ceramics, wood and metal, as well as furniture, textiles, clothes, toys, jewellery, clocks and watches and photos.

Three of the rooms on the ground floor of the southern wing will be used for temporary exhibitions, while the south-eastern room has been designed to be multifunctional, allowing not only for exhibitions, but also for social events, concerts and lectures.

The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague was founded in 1885 by the city’s Business and Trade Chamber. The construction of the building began in February 1897 according to the project of Czech architect Josef Schulz. It was completed very quickly, in December of the following year, and was inaugurated in 1899 with a Christmas exhibition. It was the last building of its type in the Neo-Renaissance style, with impressively decorated interiors (Josef Schulz is also the author of the building of the National Museum in Wenceslas Sq., and collaborated on the design of the Rudolfinum, located opposite the Museum of Decorative Arts).

The rehabilitation of the exhibition rooms on the 1 st and 2 nd floors (seven 1,180 m 2 rooms) was carried out to create a universal space for permanent exhibitions. The HVAC system, the central lightning control, the window shading and the security systems have also been modernised. The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague will open its doors to the first visitors in mid-November this year. They will be welcomed by a short-term exhibition presenting the most interesting objects of the museum’s collection.

Seventeen rooms restored with the original decoration await visitors, and a new a patio with a gift shop and a restaurant has been built. The museum’s garden has also been opened. It has been restored as it was in 1940, when it was built for an exhibition on new architecture.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AGRICULTURE The National Museum of Agriculture OPENS A NEW EXHIBITION AND A UNIQUE ROOF TERRACE!

After the renovations of its interiors, the National Museum of Agriculture in Prague welcomes visitors with a new face. The goal of the renovations was to restore the Functionalist building to the original design of Architect Milan Babuška, from 1937, but the changes have gone further. The museum is opening three new exhibitions and a unique roof terrace with one of the most beautiful views of Prague. The great story of agriculture, Everything Between the Earth and the Plate, is the main leitmotif as well as the most appropriate characteristic of the museum. The process of revival, as the authors have called it, begun two years ago and encompasses not only the structural renovations of the main building in Letná, but a change in its concept and spirit. During that time, the museum went through unprecedented changes. New exhibits were opened such as Fishing, Gamekeeping and the Lab of Silence, a multidimensional project brought from the Czech Pavilion of EXPO 2015 World Fair. The exhibits are very modern and interactive, and use a range of audiovisual techniques that combine sound and animation, 3D presentations and expanded reality. The three new permanent exhibitions broadening this year’s offer are Water in the Landscape, Discovery Lab and Gastronomy. Water in the Landscape has been conceived to interactively present the full story of water with animations and a captivating soundtrack to create a full illusion of water. In contrast, Discovery lab and Gastronomy are not built on

Visitors can also learn and try, Gastronomy will offer cooking lessons led by the most skilled professionals. Gastronomy is also associated with popular festivals through which the museum communicates with its visitors, among which are Letenské Prase (Letná’s Hog), presenting delicacies of the traditional Czech “zabijačka”, the pig-slaughter; the Herbal Day; the Confectioners’ Festival, and the Gamekeepers’s Festival on 14/10/2017, which shows the traditions of Czech gamekeeping and presents delicacies made with game. Letenská Husa (Letná’s Goose) and the tasting of the St. Martin’s Wine is an event for gourmands that takes place on St. Martin’s Day, 11/11. The highlight of the museum’s renovations is the roof terrace with a picnic meadow, which in the near future will part of the Living Garden exhibition. Going up to the roof should be an unforgettable experience as the terrace itself and the views from there are gorgeous exhibits. The view from the roof of the National Museum of Agriculture aspires to be one of the most beautiful and attractive of the entire city, offering a panorama of all the most important places of the history and the present of Prague. WINE ANDViticulture VITICULTURE IN PRAGUE Wine and in Prague Region We offer you one way to spend a pleasant time in Prague Region – visit one of the vineyards and sample local wine during one of the numerous vintage. You may be surprised, but in Prague and its surroundings they really do grow grapes and produce wine, in several vineyards. The Bohemia wine region is one of the northernmost viniculture localities in Europe. The Mělník subdivision, which also includes vineyards in Prague, Mělník and Karlštejn, is one of two wine-growing areas in Bohemia. Prague lies on 50° N latitude, like Wiesbaden in Rhineland, Germany. Although, we cannot precisely date the beginnings of the cultivation of varietal grapes on the land of what is today Prague Region, there is documentation indicating that there were vineyards back in the days

of the rule of King Wencelsas II, in the 12 th century. Under the government of the Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV (1316–1378), thanks to his decree of 1358 on the establishment of vineyards, all suitable land (southern slopes) was planted with vines. He founded vineyards under his most famous castle, Karlštejn, as well as on the slopes where you can find the Mělník chateau today. Grapevines have been grown there uninterruptedly ever since.

Under the rule of Emperor Rudolf II (1552–1616) viniculture enjoyed its greatest boom, and, with its 720 hectares of vineyards, Prague became known as the “City of Wine”. Today Prague’s vineyards cover about 12 hectares, but all boast centuries-long histories and rich traditions that survive to this day. There are now just six vineyards that remind us of the past glory of Prague’s viniculture: St. Klara’s and the Salabka in Troja, Máchalka in Vysočany, Gröbovka in Vinohrady, the Arcibiskupská vineyard in Modřany and the St. Wenceslas Vineyard in Prague Castle. Not many people would search in the heart of a European metropolis for an idyllic vineyard. Within the Prague castle

complex can be found one of the oldest vineyards in the Czech lands. Its ancient tradition dates back to the 10 th century, to the origins of Czech statehood. The unique location of the complex on the eastern rock spur under Prague Castle, offers unique and immaculate panoramic views of the most beautiful parts of Prague. You will also find vineyards near Prague on the banks of the Vltava, Labe, and Berounka rivers. When traveling to Prague and the Czech Republic, you should not miss such wonderful experiences.

Cheers!

at Prague Castle

Royal Garden of the Prague Castle 16 and 17 September 2017 Winegrowing at the Prague Castle has a tradition that dates back to more than millennium. The current tradition was renovated in the 1920s by the architect Josip Plečnik, during the works that modified the Castle as the seat for the first Czechoslovak President, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. In 2006, the Prague Castle Administration came up with the idea to organize the first modern “Prague Castle Vintage”. This year visitors to the traditional vintage can look forward to fresh grape juice pressed with a historical manual press replica, original Moravian fermenting wine, wine tasting at the Prague Castle Ballgame Room, tasting and sales of top-quality Czech food bearing the Klasa and Regional Food labels, and access to the production gardens, where thousands of orchids, anturias, the gerberas, and other flowers are grown to decorate castle at special official events. The Vintage at Prague Castle includes a representative exhibition of best Bohemian and Moravian still and sparkling wines. The vintage also offers a stylish cultural program: folklore ensembles from the Moravian Kyjov Region will play, sing and dance for two days, and the program also thinks about families with an interactive competition and fencing show. SWETT CHOCOLATE FAIRY Sweet moments with a chocolate fairy

In 2008, the company Viva Praha – The Finest Belgian Chocolate opened a retail store with the best Belgian chocolate in the very center of Prague, just a few steps from the Old Town Square, in Celetná. The store specializes in Belgian chocolate, hand-made by the best chocolatiers from the chocolate capital, Bruges, in Belgium. The freshness of chocolate plays a great role, and that is why at the Viva store you can find only the best products imported directly from artisan producers. Together with classical chocolate products, such as pralines, figures, and bars, at the Viva store you can also buy novelties of the chocolate world, for example chocolate with high content of antioxidants, organic chocolate, and pralines with unusual flavors and combinations. Those who do not like chocolate can enjoy nougat, marzipan, or homemade fudge. Right at the store, while sitting over a cup of coffee in the Jungle bar, you can enjoy cakes, original Belgian wafers, fresh fruits dipped in chocolate, and the original hot chocolate that boasts several awards. The selection is now also supplemented with a section of Belgian beer specialties. Besides chocolate, the store produces the so-called “Rock Candy”. The store has tables prepared for the manufacture of this treat, so you can see the process, which dates back more than 400 years. The store is joined to the ChocoStory chocolate museum – a member of an international network of museums with branches in Bruges, Paris, and Mexico. In the museum you can dive into the 3,000-year-old history of chocolate. You can learn when, where, and who used it for the first time, who brought it to Europe, how it spread, and how it is made today. You can also learn that chocolate is good for your health, and remember the good old times over a collection of chocolate wraps. In the showroom, our chocolatiers will show how pralines are made; and you can also taste them or to try the work with the chocolate yourselves in one of the workshops. Along with that you can see the largest chocolate cascade in the Czech Republic. In Celetná 10, you can dive into the fabulous world of chocolate and candy with all your senses.

BOATBREWERY

– a rarity on the river Vltava

Republika® Lager, and the 13° Plato Monarchie® Dark Lager tasting of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Other beer specialties will be regularly rotating on the tap: Irish Stout, English India Pale Ale and the strongest beer in the Czech Republic with 34° Plato, appropriately named “Titanic”. This beer will be available at the end of this year in 0,33 l bottles.

“With this project I have fulfilled several of my childhood dreams,” says Vojtěch Ryvola, founder of this unconventional brewery. “I always longed for a boat, and I also wanted to have a restaurant where you can have a nap and rest after a good meal. For years, I had dreamed about brewing a batch of beer on the Vltava. I am a patriot and consider Czech beer our national treasure. On top of everything, our boat offers a beautiful view of Prague Castle.”

The lower deck houses a beer hall with hot and cold meals, smoked delicacies and a direct view of the lagering tanks. If you love fish, do not miss a unconventional specialty: marinated fishburger. Grilled specialties will be offered on the deck during the summer months. The upper deck offers a relaxation section with 8 deck chairs on sunny days for those who want to enjoy the panoramic view of Prague, from the Petřín Hill to Strahov and Prague Castle. The designers have not forgotten the children: there is a mini-playground with a sand box and a slide on the terrace.

A unique boat-brewery, the only one on the Vltava, and Czech rivers in general, now has fulfilled the dreams of its creator, and Prague visitors’, too. On three decks, visitors can enjoy a brewery, highquality Old-Bohemian cuisine, an elegant restaurant, an original on-board bar, deck chairs, and showers. On the main deck there is the a la carte restaurant, kitchen, and a two-tun 500 liter brewhouse and, in a glass-walled room, two 5 hl and two 10 hl open fementation vessels. This is a place where gourmet experiences are enriched by the aroma of malt and hops brewing. You can see and, above all, taste the result of the process, a golden brew with a creamy head. The choice of beers on tap always includes four kinds named after Czech boats: Legie® (Legion), Republika® (Republic)and Monarchie® (Monarchy). The lovers of bitter beers can enjoy the full-bodied Legie®, with 10° Plato, the well-balanced, 12° Plato

The Boat Brewery anchors on a steady place in the center of Prague, by the right bank, under the Štefánik Bridge. It is not a classical boat but it is able to sail at various occasions or upon request. It can host parties or you can just come to relax after sightseeing in Prague. From September there are regular concerts of different genres from jazz to country and folk. Come and you will understand, especially if you love beer, good food, and an unconventional view of the charming Prague panorama.

And how to say “Good Bye” to the Boat Brewery? Unconventionally. You can choose the sailors’ “Ahoy” or the traditional brewmasters’ “May God Give Luck”.

St. Vitus Cathedral

This Gothic Cathedral, which was built over nearly six centuries, was finally completed in 1929. In the 10th century a rotunda originally stood in its place. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parléř, who also built the St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is adorned with frescoes and semi-precious stones; in the catacombs underneath there are tombs of Czech kings.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m2. The site of the castle was established in the 9th century, and in the 12th century the Romanesque palace was built. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the last reconstruction of the Royal Palace was carried out under the rule of the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, At that time (1497 to 1500) the famous Vladislav Hall was built in the late Gothic style. The castle was enlarged in the 16th century following the great fire in 1541. After World War I, the interior and gardens of the castle were redesigned by the architect J. Plečnik. The castle is the seat of the president of the republic and the historical and political centre of the city and the state. The changing of the guards takes place at Prague Castle every hour on the hour from 5:00 am to 10 pm. The guard changes at noon are accompanied by a solemn fanfare. See the map on page 44. TIME COFFEE… Time forFOR Coffee…

For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends, artists, journalists, and students. Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee.

The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and delicious espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too.

LIVE PIANO DAILY FROM 5 PM TO 11 PM

The Louvre Café was founded in 1902. We

are honoured to carry on the tradition of this establishment, which has been a top café culture and cultural life centre ever since its origin. We are proud to have experienced repeated visits by personalities of world-wide significance such as Franz Kafka, Karel Čapek, Albert Einstein, and many others. The café opens at 8 am and offers a wide selection of breakfasts and newspapers. The restaurant serves traditional Czech cuisine, and light fare specialties. The non-smoking part of the restaurant, and several salons, seat parties of up to 15–20 guests. We maintain the tradition of “café sports” – thus you can borrow chess sets and play pool on one of five pool tables. On hot days you can enjoy a stay on an openair summer terrace. Covering 400 sq m, our newly opened Louvre Photogallery displays the best works of leading Czech photographers. The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.”

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360. Český Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a lively, cosmopolitan town with a unique atmosphere surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Dominated by a Castle stretching over the meandering Vltava River, Český Krumlov’s narrow cobblestone streets wind along romantic nooks between patrician houses, where you’ll find attractive exhibits of world-renown artists, music festivals, concerts, and theatre performances. Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340–1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted. (see p. 96–97)

Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre, you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest.

The Basilica, built in the Romanesque style with some early Gothic features, is one of the treasures of medieval architecture. The most valuable part of the Basilica is the crypt. St. Barbara’s Cathedral

KUTNÁHORA – UNESCO family member for 22 years Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, and the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city.

“Hrádek” (Little Castle), one of the most famous burghers’ houses in Kutná Hora, houses today the Czech Museum of Silver, with exhibitions on silver mining. The museum regularly appears on leading positions of TripAdvisor travelers’ surveys. Once again, it received the Certificate of Excellence in 2015. The museum also offers a tour through an original medieval silver mine, the St. George drift. Visitors are equipped with medieval mining gear, a helmet and torch. The drift is 35 meters deep, and 250 meters long. During the tour, visitors also pass by rooms filled with crystal clear water. (Open: April – November) Art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral in the Jesuit college.

Enjoy a fantastic autumn in the

PARDUBICEREGION! St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech lands, is celebrated at the St. Wenceslas festival, at the Svojanov Castle, near PoliÄ?ka. At the weekend of 23 and 24 September, the royal retinue will welcome visitors in the courtyard with knight duels and delicacies of the Bohemian cuisine.

The Pardubice Region, very near Prague, offers a very diverse program at historical landmarks, together with sports events and opportunities for nature enthusiasts. 98

Horse-racing is without doubt a more noble sport, and the most difficult race in the old continent is the Velká Pardubická Steeplechase, which this 8 October will have its 127 th edition. On a 6900 meter-long track, horses and jockeys must jump over 31 obstacles, including the infamous Taxis Ditch. Cheering your favourite from one of the tribunes of the Pardubice Racecourse is a unique experience. The race is also an important social and cultural occasion in Pardubice that culminates in the evening with a great fireworks show on the Elbe. The noble Pernštejn family built an extensive system of fish-ponds in the 16 th century near Lázně (Spa) Bohdaneč. The revenues from fish sales and the surrounding lands helped to maintain the representative family seat in Pardubice. Today, the 250 hectare Matka pond has been preserved together with the surrounding wetlands as a National Natural Reserve, were many species of marsh and waterfowl can be observed, and, on 28 October visitors can watch traditional autumn pond harvesting.

We believe that Pardubice Region’s autumn program has a lot to offer. We look forward to your visit.

KUKS

THE STORY OF A PLACE THAT HAS FOUND ITSELF ANEW

The Kuks Baroque Complex was built at the beginning of the 18 th century by František Antonín Špork (1662–1738).

100,000 people came to the Elbe valley near Dvůr Králové, in East Bohemia, to admire the rebirth of this Baroque gem.

Charmed by the grandiosity of the social life at the court of Luis XIV in Versailles, Špork decided to realize his vision of “heaven on earth” in a deserted valley of the Elbe when he was only thirty years old.

Along with classical sightseeing tours, in August visitors can travel to the times of Baroque theater with the Theatrum Kuks Festival, enjoy a vintage in September, and celebrate St. Hubertus day in October.

Only fragments remain of the chateau, the spa buildings, the colonnade, the horse racing park, the library, and the theater that hosted ensembles from all over Europe. But the hospital building for old men, the mighty Holy Trinity Church with the Špork family tomb, the monastery garden, and the open-air gallery of allegoric statues of the Virtues and the Vices by Matyáš Bernard Braun have survived to these days.

These Baroque Festivals bring Kuks back to its days of glory. The valley will once again live the Baroque whirl that was last time experienced by Count Špork with live scenes from the period, theatrical performances, parades of noblemen and court ladies, a military camp, jugglers, musicians, jousting, and a fire show in the evening.

The reopening of the complex after its restoration attracted 140,000 visitors in 2015, and last year, over

KRKONOŠEMOUNTAINS Krkonoše is the largest and most popular Czech mountain range. As early as the 19th century, Krkonoše became a popular and sought-after tourist destination. Krkonoše is full of skiers and snowboarders today, too.

Lázně, along with numerous smaller, charming centers, are well-equipped with cableways, ski lifts, groomed cross-country trails, and cycling routes, as well as hotels, B & Bs, and everything necessary for a good vacation stay.

In the spring, skiers are replaced by hikers. Their routes lead over mighty mountain ridges, glacier-formed valleys, table lands, and alpine meadows.

Krkonoše – an isle of tundra in the heart of Europe – boasts a unique mosaic of mountainous eco-systems. The slopes are covered with forests and meadows, the upper parts of the flat ridges are home to dwarf pines and knee timber, and peat bogs. For its uniqueness and natural value, the first Czech national park, one of the largest in Europe, was declared in Krkonoše in 1963.

Tourists wander in the restful Krkonoše foothills, and to the source of the river Elbe. Krkonoše and its foothills are also popular with cyclists. The most famous centers, like Špindlerův Mlýn, Pec pod Sněžkou, Harrachov, Rokytnice, and Jánské
