Dear visitors! In 2016, the Czech Republic will celebrate the anniversary of one of the most important figures of its history. It will commemorate the 700th anniversary of the birth of the “Father of the Homeland”, The King of Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles IV (1316 – 1378). This is the right moment to claim the heritage of one of the most significant rulers of both Czech and European history. Charles IV is appreciated mostly for his wisdom, education, and diplomatic skills. He was a big reformer and statesman, with unique perspective and abilities. He ranked among the most significant personalities of the 14th century. However, his cultural influence has remained. It applies not only to the lands he once ruled, even if the informal title “Father of the Homeland” ties him mainly to the Czech Lands. During his reign, the Czech Lands enjoyed an extraordinary economic and cultural boom. Prague became a true metropolis of the Holy Roman Empire, and his legacy has maintained its significance, and can still be appreciated to these days: we can admire the monumental beauty of the St. Vitus Cathedral, we can stroll on the Charles Bridge or contemplate in the halls of the Karlštejn Castle. Charles’s reign also affected irreversibly other spheres of society. Education was promoted with the founding of the famous Charles University – the first university north of the Alps, and the founding of the Prague Archdiocese was very important in the ecclesiastical area, as put an end to the subordination to the Archdioceses in Germany.

CHARLES IV 1316–2016 King of Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire St. Vitus Cathedral

The celebration will also present the Czech ruler as a key figure in the whole of 14th century Europe. It will highlight his diplomatic skills as a counterweight to the wars, and will present the Czech Republic as a country with a deep and strong European tradition and an appreciation for timeless values. Charles’s vision of a warless Europe is still modern and vivid. Throughout the Czech Republic, starting in May 2016, various events relating to this anniversary will take place: grand exhibitions, musical performances, literature, medieval fairs with costumes, music and shows of the period, and culinary experiences from the long-gone times. With respect to the special significance of the celebrations, it will be possible to see artworks only seldom exhibited, if at all. In the extensive list of events, all visitors will find the most suitable to their interests.

St. Wenceslas Crown

Do not miss this occasion; come and meet an extraordinary ruler, Charles IV. 6

PRAGUE CASTLE CELEBRATES THE 700th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF CHARLES IV Prague Castle, once the seat of Charles IV, will be the location of one of the most extensive projects of the festivities. After his stay in France (1323 – 1330), where he had been sent by his father, John of Luxembourg, the 17 year-old Prince Charles returned to Bohemia in 1333. In Paris Charles had learned how a royal city and coronation church should look like, and how to represent the royal majesty. Prague Castle remained Charles’s seat even after he was crowned Roman King in 1346, and Roman Emperor in 1355. Even if the administration of the Holy Roman Empire, diplomatic activities and military campaigns kept him traveling much of the time, the construction and artistic activities at Prague Castle never slowed down during his reign. Charles IV influenced the shape of Prague Castle for centuries to come, and left many traces behind.

event of the project is a symbolic opening of the inner and outer triforium, in a simplified 3D replica. The triforium, the richly decorated gallery with sculptures on both the inner and outer side of the cathedral is a most guarded landmark, not open to public.

III. The Crown of the Mother of Cities:

Completion of the St. Vitus Cathedral in photographs The Theresian Wing of the Old Royal Palace The Crown of the Mother of Cities exhibition relates to the cathedral as the “First Building in the Land”, and will present unknown photographs from the Prague Castle Archive documenting the final construction works on the cathedral in the 19th and 20th centuries.

IV. The Kingless Crown: the Story

of the Bohemian Crown Jewels after 1918 Romananesque floor of the Old Royal Palace The “Kingless Crown” exhibition will bring visitors to the modern history, in the rooms where the Bohemian Crown Jewels were immured during WW II, presenting the story of this most precious national relic in the dramatic 20 th century.

The six exhibitions related to the Charles IV anniversary will be open to visitors from 13 May until 28 September, 2016 all around the Prague Castle Complex.

I. The Scepter and the Crown:

V. A Crown in a Palm:

Charles IV and the Czech Royal Coronations The Imperial Stables at Prague Castle The pilot event of the extensive project at Prague Castle focuses on the millennium-long history of coronations of Czech kings, whose binding rules were set by Cherles IV in the mid-14th century. The main exhibit will be the most significant symbol of the Czech royal power – the St. Wenceslas Crown. It was a state and sacral symbol already at the time of its origin, before 1346. Maybe it is the reason why – unlike many other medieval crowns – this crown has been preserved, even in the shape imprinted by Charles IV. For the first time in modern history, instead of the famous Scepter and Orb from the Renaissance, it will be supplemented with replicas of the Gothic insignia made especially for the occasion.

The Eternal Royal Coin Rožmberk Palace The exhibition in Rožmberk Palace will take visitors to the period of Charles IV, presenting the “Prague Groschen” as an eternal coin of the Kingdom of Bohemia.

VI. Architecture for the Crown

St. George Monastery The architecture of the period will be presented especially for children through the interactive exhibition “Architecture for the Crown”, in the St. George Monastery. Along with the above-mentioned exhibitions, Prague Castle is preparing a rich program: The Year of Charles IV starts together with the Prague Castle season opening of the tourist season, on 2 April, 2016. The spirit of the era of Charles IV will also be present during the 2nd edition of The Days of the Knights Festival in Jelení příkop (Steg Moat). Visitors will also follow the steps of Charles IV footprints in the “Charles Circle”.

II. The Crown of the Kingdom:

the Cathedral of Charles IV. The Prague Castle Riding School The exhibition is dedicated to the St. Vitus Cathedral, the most significant building of Charles IV. It will present it as an extraordinary architectonic work, the coronation and funeral temple of Czech kings, and the spiritual center of the medieval Czech state. The main

PRAGUE CASTLE Prague Castle

Prague Castle brings an exhibition of works by the famous Italian painter, Titian For the first time ever, the historical rooms of the Imperial Stables at Prague Castle will host an exhibition of the Venetian Renaissance painter known as Titian. This is unprecedented for the Czech Republic as it will be the first time so many of the works of this painter are exhibited together.

Allegory of love, private collection

Self-Portrait of Titian with Francesco Zuccato

“Tiziano – Vanitas. The Poet of the Image and the Shade of Beauty” will take place between 26 November 2015 and 20 March 2016 and will offer a unique opportunity to present the works by this world-renowned artist and genius to the public. Thanks to his extraordinary talent for using colors and chiaroscuro, he influenced both his contemporaries and the painters of the generations that followed. The exhibition brings a new view of the artist’s works, emphasizing the line that made Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) famous – the portraits, specially the images of delicate female beauty like “Vanitas”. His works rank among the most precious gems of the world art heritage. The curators of the exhibition are Art Historian Lionello Puppi, one of the most renowned experts of Renaissance art, and Professor Serena Baccaglini. The coordinator of the exhibition is Doc Monica Burian Jourdan, who has organized important exhibitions all over the world. The exhibition has the support of the Italian Embassy and the Italian Ambassador, Mr. Aldo Amati, the Italian Institute in Prague and his director, Giovanni Sciola, and the Italian Ministry of Culture; and it's organized in cooperation with the Prague Castle Administration and the Art for Public. The Italian painter Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) is one of the most significant figures of the Venetian School of the 16th century, and one of the most characteristic artists ever. The extent of his themes moves from portraits to landscapes, and to the mythological and religious. The “Tiziano – Vanitas. The Poet of the Image and the Shade of Beauty” exhibition puts Prague together with Rome, Paris, Vienna, among others, as one of the cities famous for its art tourism. The exhibition is aimed at a wide audience: the lay public, art enthusiasts, students, and art experts.

NATIONAL GALLERY PRAGUE National Gallery in Prague 220 th Anniversary of the National Gallery in Prague. Generosity: On the Art of Giving 5 February – 3 July 2016 Location: Main exhibition on the second floor of the Kinsky Palace, related displays and individual artworks in the permanent exhibitions of the Kinsky Palace, Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia, Trade Fair Palace, Sternberg Palace, Salm Palace and Schwarzenberg Palace On February 5th, 2016, 220 years will have passed since the National Gallery’s historical moment of its founding. Unlike in the past, when similar occasions were usually commemorated in a rather historical and retrospective way, this time, the National Gallery will celebrate the event with an exhibition on the politics of generosity, devoted to topics like togetherness, sharing, donating, patronizing and friendship in the arts. Assumpta Lannova, South Bohemia, around 1450

Toyen (Marie Čermínová): Horror, 1937

A series of shows prepared by the collections of the National Gallery will attempt to present a biography of the institution and its identity, which is based on and fundamentally linked to the principle of generosity. A multi-layered and diverse display will be placed in all of the buildings of the National Gallery. The topic of generosity will permeate through the whole Gallery not only from a historical perspective, but will also be set into a linguistic, poetic and social context, thus providing an insight into the mechanics of the precious habit of giving and its consequences. Here, the museum is a gift, and the collection is perceived as a collective property. When perceiving the show as a whole, we will meet the personalities of the people who contributed significantly to the establishment and development of the institution and its collections. The main exhibition will be composed of six chapters: I. Generosity of the founding fathers, II. Institutional generosity as the foundation principle of the museum’s collections, III. Generosity of donors and benefactors, IV. Generosity of the world as a source of life, V. Love and compassion in philosophy and religion, VI. Love and friendship as conditions of human existence. Further, in order to build up a unified narrative body, the selection will also be incorporated into the permanent exhibitions of the five collections that the National Gallery consists of. Additionally, each of the six buildings will also host interventions and site-specific works of contemporary art created specifically for this occasion. In order to contextualize the display within a contemporary perspective, artworks, installations and performances by Jiří Kovanda, Klára Kristalová, Matts Leiderstam, Yoshihiro Suda, Prinz Gholam, Edmund de Waal, Jaromír Novotný, Hiroshi Sugimoto and a number of others will also be included in the exhibition.

NATIONAL GALLERY PRAGUE National Gallery in Prague Charles IV (1316–1378) – Bavarian-Czech state Exhibition on the Occasion of the 700th Birthday

and private collections. Artistic ventures of Charles IV and members of his imperial court, which were undertaken in Prague, Nuremberg, Aachen, Frankfurt am Main or in any other artistic centre of the Holy Roman Empire will be displayed alongside their inspirational models of Byzantine, Italian or French origin.

14 May – 25 September 2016 Waldstein Riding School Daily except Monday 10 am–6 pm The organizers of the exhibition are the National Gallery in Prague and Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte, in cooperation with Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas an der Universität Leipzig.

Coronation of Virgin Mary

This significant exhibition will present the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the Czech King Charles IV as a unique figure of Europe’s political and cultural history, a pious, well-educated, single-minded and judicious ruler, who did not hesitate to use a wide range of diplomatic means. One of the typical features of Charles’ ruling concept was the programmatic use of arts and architecture to promote the imperial majesty. Charles IV has gone down in history as one of the most generous patron of the arts, as well as one of the most often depicted rulers in mediaeval Europe’s history. Antependium with Jesus and Throne of Devine Mercy

The exhibition will be accompanied by a large multifarious program of activities in both venues, Prague and Nuremberg. The viewers will be able to see a number of exhibition projects in the partner museum institutions in Bohemia and Bavaria; they will be able to follow in Charles IV’s footsteps in the places linked with his life and admire the royal architecture and art in their original milieus.

The exhibition seeks to show Charles IV devoid of distorting layers of ideological prejudice and offer to the public a multi-faceted portrait of the historical figure with his positive as well as negative qualities. Charles IV will be presented against the kaleidoscopic background of a broad contemporary cultural-historical 14th-century context. The admirable prosperity of arts and architecture of Charles IV will be set in this historical context with conspicuous overlaps to the present. How did his contemporaries perceive Charles IV? Where did he get the money for the spectacular and costly imperial presentation? How were the holy relics acquired and what was the role of arts in the service of Charles’ imperial policy? Who were the people who acted in the Emperor’s name and secured the support he needed?

Crown of Charles IV from the coronation of the Holy Roman King in Bohemia

The exhibition seeks answers to such questions through 170 exhibits of all disciplines in art culturalhistorical documents loaned by more than a hundred prestigious European and U.S. museums, churches

Without Borders, Art in the Ore Mountains 1250–1550 27 November 2015 – 28 March 2016 National Gallery – Waldstein Riding School

The more than 200 works of art shown at the “Without Borders” exhibition offer the visitor an extraordinary artistic experience, with 500 year-old historical facts that have had a significant effect on the current appearance of the North Bohemian towns (city planning, roads, etc.).

During the high and late Middle Ages, the cross border region of the Ore Mountains was the scene of an intense business and cultural exchange between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Principality of Saxony. The unprecedented wealth of urban centres like Litoměřice, Ústí nad Labem, Louny, Žatec, Most, Teplice, etc. at the end of the Middle Ages – late 15, early 16 centuries – was reflected in a strong need to artistically represent towns, aristocracy, monasteries and even individuals with the highest criteria. Each of the sections dedicated to the culture of the above mentioned towns include an exhibition of treasures of sculpture and painting (altars and their conserved parts), objects of precious metals used in liturgy (chalices, monstrances, reliquaries), liturgical books or works that decorated buildings (portals). Mining in the Ore Mountains brings us closer not to objects related to the activity (hoes, hammers, burners), but also to coins (Jáchymov Tolars) and medals made in the Jáchymov Mint.

Ai Weiwei: Zodiac Heads The Czech Republic will be one of the few places in Europe to exhibit the work (along with Denmark, Germany, Russia and Spain). By exhibiting the work in front of the Trade Fair Palace, the gallery will contribute to discussions about the role of art in Prague’s public space. That the Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads will be exhibited as part of the National Gallery’s 220th anniversary and that it will occupy the space in front of the Trade Fair Palace, an example of Czech modern architecture, makes this display a unique curatorial project.

5 February – 31 August 2016 Place: in front of the Trade Fair Palace Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads by contemporary Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, will be displayed as one of the projects accompanying the exhibition Generosity: On the Art of Giving, devoted to themes like sharing, generosity and patronage, and is organized in celebration of the 220th anniversary of the National Gallery’s predecessor, the Picture Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friend of the Arts in Bohemia. Ai Weiwei’s Zodiac Heads is the first and long-awaited work by this acclaimed artist to be exhibited in the Czech Republic. The space in front of the Trade Fair Palace will house twelve bronze zodiac-animal heads, copies of sculptures designed for the Garden of Perfect Brightness (Yuanmingyuan) near Beijing, which were destroyed by foreign troops in 1860 during one of the Opium Wars. The 1.5-meter-wide heads are each attached to a three-meter-high slender post, forming a semicircle. The artist originally made them as “public sculptures”. The concept was extremely successful and Weiwei’s Zodiac Heads became one of the most famous works of contemporary Chinese art. It is perhaps the only contemporary Chinese artwork.

NATIONAL THEATRE National Theatre The Nutcracker and the Cuddly Mouse Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Premired on 3 and 4 December 2015 The National Theatre After 10 years of performing, the stage director and choreographer Youri Vàmos’ singular and extremely successful version, the National Theatre has prepared a brand-new production, created by Petr Zuska, Artistic Director of the Czech National Ballet. This new production, which replaces the current one, performed for three decades, is prepared by the conductor and music director of the State Opera, Martin Leginus, together with the renowned opera director Jiří Heřman.

Giacomo Puccini

Premiered on 4 and 9 February 2016 Prague State Opera “Butterfly” is indisputably one of the most popular and most artistically valued operas of all time. Notwithstanding the fact that it has perhaps the simplest plot of all Puccini’s operas. In this work, Puccini eschewed intricate action and boisterous dramatic events, opting instead for an intimate story and highlighting the psychology of the characters, fleshing out by his music the tiniest details, oscillations and extreme emotional surges, the essential contrast between the Japanese and “Western” mentality, which he also aptly renders by means of many a time surprisingly mo-

Bohuslav Martinů

Premiered on 24 and 25 March 2016 The National Theatre Bohuslav Martinů’s opera Juliette (The Key to Dreams) is closely linked to the National Theatre in Prague, which gave its premiere on 16 March 1938, conducted by Václav Talich and directed by Jindřich Honzl, both major Czech artists of the first half of the 20th century. The libretto, written by Martinů himself, in French, was based on the Surrealist author Georges Neveux’s play Juliette ou la Clé de songes, first performed at the Théâtre de l’Avenue in Paris in 1930. In the spring of 1936, Martinů plunged into writing the Czech libretto and composing the music for Juliette, and completed the opera the next January. ST. VITUS TREASURE

After 24 years, the permanent exhibition of St. Vitus treasure has returned to the former Holy Cross court chapel. It consists of some 140 works of supreme artistic quality from the temple collection collected at the church, later cathedral, of St. Vitus ever since the 11th century. The St. Vitus treasure experienced its grandest blossom in the era of Charles IV, who endowed the cathedral with an extensive collection of relics of saints for whom leading goldsmiths and silversmiths manufactured precious shrines. Among those, an impressive golden reliquary cross, also known as the coronation cross, was actually used during coronation ceremonies, along with the reliquary busts of the principal saints of the St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas, and St. Vojtěch (St. Adalbert) cathedral, acquired by King Vladislaus Jagiellon at the end of the 15th century. The treasure was further enriched during the baroque era, and even more in the 19th and 20th centuries. Along with the goldsmiths’ works, the exhibition also presents Gothic paintings and samples of textiles which were included in the collections in the oldest times. The exhibition documents the extraordinary riches of the temple collections preserved, despite serious losses experienced during times of social unrest.

SWETT CHOCOLATE FAIRY Sweet moments with a chocolate fairy

In 2008, the company Viva Praha – The Finest Belgian Chocolate opened a retail store with the best Belgian chocolate in the very center of Prague, just a few steps from the Old Town Square, in Celetná. The store specializes in Belgian chocolate, hand-made by the best chocolatiers from the chocolate capital, Bruges, in Belgium. The freshness of chocolate plays a great role, and that is why at the Viva store you can find only the best products imported directly from artisan producers. Together with classical chocolate products, such as pralines, figures, and bars, at the Viva store you can also buy novelties of the chocolate world, for example chocolate with high content of antioxidants, organic chocolate, and pralines with unusual flavors and combinations. Those who do not like chocolate can enjoy nougat, marzipan, or homemade fudge. Right at the store, while sitting over a cup of coffee in the Jungle bar, you can enjoy cakes, original Belgian wafers, fresh fruits dipped in chocolate, and the original hot chocolate that boasts several awards. The selection is now also supplemented with a section of Belgian beer specialties. Besides chocolate, the store produces the so-called “Rock Candy”. The store has tables prepared for the manufacture of this treat, so you can see the process, which dates back more than 400 years. The store is joined to the ChocoStory chocolate museum – a member of an international network of museums with branches in Bruges, Paris, and Mexico. In the museum you can dive into the 3,000-year-old history of chocolate. You can learn when, where, and who used it for the first time, who brought it to Europe, how it spread, and how it is made today. You can also learn that chocolate is good for your health, and remember the good old times over a collection of chocolate wraps. In the showroom, our chocolatiers will show how pralines are made; and you can also taste them or to try the work with the chocolate yourselves in one of the workshops. Along with that you can see the largest chocolate cascade in the Czech Republic. In Celetná 10, you can dive into the fabulous world of chocolate and candy with all your senses.

The St. George Convent was established in 973 by Prince Boleslav and his sister Mlada for the Benedictine order. It was dissolved in 1782, and reconstructed and newly opened in 1976. Open daily: 9 am to 5 pm (IV–X), 9 am–4 pm (XI–III)

St. Vitus Cathedral

This Gothic Cathedral, which was built over nearly six centuries, was finally completed in 1929. In the 10th century a rotunda originally stood in its place. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parléř, who also built the St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is adorned with frescoes and semi-precious stones; in the catacombs underneath there are tombs of Czech kings.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m2. The site of the castle was established in the 9th century, and in the 12th century the Romanesque palace was built. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the last reconstruction of the Royal Palace was carried out under the rule of the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, At that time (1497 to 1500) the famous Vladislav Hall was built in the late Gothic style. For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends artists, journalists, and students. Café de Paris, located in the Art-Nouveau Paris hotel, definitely lives up to its name – the original interior and decorations reflect the culture and refined taste of famous Parisian cafés since the beginning of the 1920s, while elements of modern design and free WIFI connection offer guests maximal comfort. Franz Kafka loved our excellent desserts. You can bet that we faithfully follow our tradition. For a century people have enjoyed the famous “Paris” cake in a unique atmosphere. The menu of our café is extensive, with excellent salads, snaks, delicious soups and sandwiches, and other treats tempting guests for a light lunch and/or dinner. It’s up to you whether you choose the Café de Paris for a friendly appointment over a cup of coffee, and/or a business meeting. In the bar located in the back part of the café, our bartenders prepare excellent cocktails for you. The selection is truly wide, and you don’t have to hurry – we don’t close until early morning. Café Imperial has always been a heavily frequented hot-spot ever since 1914 when the Imperial hotel was built. Prague doesn’t have many places like this. Nowhere else you can find such a unique interior in the Art Deco style with cubist elements, and top Art-Nouveau mosaics. The recent successful reconstruction (the *****hotel and café were reopened in 2007) even improved the firstrate quality of the café, and – at the same time – it succeeded in preserving the atmosphere, which is inseparable from the Grand Café style. Breakfast, dinner, afternoon cup of tea or coffee, night celebration with friends – everything will be taken care of to the slightest detail by the friendly staff. The menu presents the best of the Czech culinary art. The famous chef Zdeněk Pohlreich and his team are ready to fulfil all the wishes of all their guests. Café Imperial offers a unique chance to dine right in the kitchen and observe how your menu is prepared while you discuss the served wines with your sommelier. The Best Hotel Restaurant of the year 2009 (awarded by the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic) Café Imperial is looking forward to your visit. Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee. The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and savoury espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, and/or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too. The Louvre café was founded in 1902. We are honoured to carry on the tradition of this establishment, which has been a top café culture and cultural life centre ever since its origin. We are proud to have experienced repeated visits by personalities of world-wide significance such as Franz Kafka, Karel Čapek, Albert Einstein, and many others. The café opens at 8 a.m. and offers a wide selection of breakfasts and newspapers. The restaurant serves traditional Czech cuisine, and light fare specialties. The non-smoking part of the restaurant, and several salons, seat parties of up to 15–20 guests. We maintain the tradition of “café sports” – thus you can borrow chess sets and play pool on one of five pool tables. On hot days you can enjoy a stay on an open-air summer terrace. Covering 400 sq m, our newly opened Louvre Photogallery displays the best works of leading Czech photographers. Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340–1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted. (see p. 94–95)

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360.

TŘEBÍČ Třebíč is a picturesque town with rich history and a lot of valuable architectural monuments. The most remarkable have been included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List – the St. Procopius Basilica and the Jewish Quarter with the Jewish Cemetery.

Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre, you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. Other places worth a visit are the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, with a lookout tower and the exhibition Angels on the Hill, and the former Bishop’s Gymnasium, which today houses a successfully restored museum. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest.

The Basilica, built in the Romanesque style with some early Gothic features, is one of the treasures of medieval architecture. The most valuable part of the Basilica is the crypt. The Jewish Quarter is the only evidence of Jewish culture outside the territory of Israel included in the UNESCO list and it’s a unique complex of 123 buildings, among them the Front and Rear Synagogue, and the Seligmann Bauer’s House, with an exhibition of a typical Jewish household.

TELČ Telč is one of the most sought-after cultural destinations, where you can pleasantly spend your free time. You can visit historical landmarks and the Telč undergrounds, now open to the public, located below most of the houses on the Zacharias of Hradec square and part of the chateau complex. You can also visit festivals, concerts, exhibitions at the city gallery, or a historical festival organized every year, moderated by the historical personalities Zacharias of Hradec, and Katerina of Wallenstein.

Photo: Villa Tugendhat by David Židlický It is said that Brno is a living gallery of functionalist architecture, where not a single one of the important names of that era is missing. From Adlof Loose, who was born here, through Bohuslav Fuchs or Ernest Wiesner, to the German Ludwig Miese van der Rohe, the designer of the world famous Villa Tugendhat, a masterpiece of Functionalism from 1930, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The residential and utility rooms and the beautiful garden of this unique house, with its flowing space, are open to the public, and the villa offers a fantastic view to the city.

Together with the chateau, the city square constitutes a unique architectonic complex, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

Bookings required. www.tugendhat.eu

Part of the undergrounds and underground corridors oriented toward the square were opened to the public in September 2014. The towns of Lednice and Valtice are located in the heart of the Lednice-Valtice Complex, which in 1996 was included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites. They offer a lot of cultural and sports activities. The surroundings are criss-crossed with cycling trails, where you can admire the uniqueness, charm and history of the region. Lednice is a popular tourist destination thanks to its fairy-tale château and the surrounding landscape. Though, in recent years, also thanks to its successfully developing spas. The main therapeutic source are the mineral waters rich in iodine-bromide sourced from a nearby well. Thanks to its iodine contents, its quality is one of the best of its type in Europe. In 2009, the Lednice Spas were granted the status of therapeutic spa.

The Kroměříž Flower Garden ranks among the most significant gardening masterpieces worldwide, these days being practically the only representation of such kind in Europe. The Flower garden has two main parts – the flower bank with shaped walls and broderiebeds, and the garden nursery with the Strawberry Hills. Every year, the beds in front of the colonnade in the flower bank are planted with twenty thousand summerannuals, grown in greenhouses and hot-beds directly in the Flower Garden.

There are fountains among the colourful flowerbeds and green labyrinths, and the very centre of the garden is dominated by a rotunda with unique artistic decorations and a unique Foucault pendulum. St. Barbara’s Cathedral and Jesuit college

KUTNÁHORA – UNESCO family member for 20 years Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, were included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city.

“Hrádek” (Little Castle), one of the most famous burghers’ houses in Kutná Hora, houses today the Czech Museum of Silver with exhibitions on silver mining. The museum regularly appears on leading positions of the TripAdvisor travelers’ surveys. Once again, it won the Certificate of Excellence in 2015. The museum also offers a tour through an original medieval silver mine, the so-called St. George drift. Visitors are equipped for the visit with a medieval mining gear, a helmet and torch. The drift is 35 meters deep under the surface, and 250 meters long. During the tour, visitors also pass by rooms filled with crystal clear water. The art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral in the Jesuit college. KRKONOŠEMOUNTAINS Krkonoše is the largest and most popular Czech mountain range. As early as the 19th century, Krkonoše became a popular and sought-after tourist destination. Krkonoše is full of skiers and snowboarders today, too.

Lázně, along with numerous smaller, charming centers, are well-equipped with cableways, ski lifts, groomed cross-country trails, and cycling routes, as well as hotels, B & Bs, and everything necessary for a good vacation stay.

In the spring, skiers are replaced by hikers. Their routes lead over mighty mountain ridges, glacier-formed valleys, table lands, and alpine meadows.

Krkonoše – an isle of tundra in the heart of Europe – boasts a unique mosaic of mountainous eco-systems. The slopes are covered with forests and meadows, the upper parts of the flat ridges are home to dwarf pines and knee timber, and peat bogs. For its uniqueness and natural value, the first Czech national park, one of the largest in Europe, was declared in Krkonoše in 1963.

Tourists wander in the restful Krkonoše foothills, and to the source of the river Elbe. Krkonoše and its foothills are also popular with cyclists. The most famous centers, like Špindlerův Mlýn, Pec pod Sněžkou, Harrachov, Rokytnice, and Jánské

PORCELAIN TRAILS PEEK UNDER THE LID OF THE BLUE ONION In North-West Bohemia, under the Ore Mountains, in the Teplice region, you can find plenty of remarkable tourist destinations that you can now visit as part of a unique project called the Porcelain Trails, prepared by the Český porcelán, a. s. Dubí and supported by the Ústí Regional Authority. It is really an interesting inspiration for a trip. It connects all places of interest in the Teplice region whose common denominator is traditionally manufactured porcelain. The Český porcelán, a. s. Dubí has been manufacturing and selling white and decorated porcelain for 150 years. It exports its products all over the world. The most famous porcelain is the “porcelain with blue blood”, known as Blue Onion. To peek under the lid of the porcelain production is a fantastic experience. You can take a guided tour through the factory, focusing on the historical and technological details of the porcelain production in Dubí. The tour also includes a visit to the House of Porcelain with Blue Blood, with a unique exhibition on the history of the porcelain production, in both the vanished and still existing porcelain manufactures under the Ore Mountains. Porcelain lovers can also visit a newly refurbished retail store and buy the famous products of the Český porcelán, a. s. The company has prepared four interesting sightseeing tours, included in the international and border-crossing Porcelain Trail project.

Blue Trail – from Queen Judith to Blue Onion Teplice / Dubí, 10 am–3 pm Itinerary: The Regional Museum in Teplice (an attractive exhibition of porcelain and ceramics, the unique preserved sacral rooms of the disappeared Romanesque monastery founded by Queen Judith), lunch at the Český porcelán, a. s. DELICATE BEAUTY FROM THE HANDS OF A MASTER The last of the four trails takes you to Duchcov, where you can find the Royal Dux Bohemia that manufactures porcelain figures, and is included in the production portfolio of the Český porcelán, a. s. Dubí. This factory has been producing and selling figurative and decorative porcelain for 160 years. Its products are mostly exported. It is possible to say that it ranks among the world’s top-class. It is evident from numerous awards. Its trade mark, a pink triangle, guarantees the origin, and the high quality of the figural porcelain produced under the brand Royal Dux Bohemia. The porcelain figures are manufactured in hard porcelain of European type, with a great emphasis on the precise, fine details of the product. During the tour to the plant visitors can learn about the hand production with traditional techniques that guarantee the high quality and special character of the products manufactured in Duchcov. The most interesting item is a life-size Yorkshire terrier figure named Beatrix Bella Venezia, made to the model of the family’s forefathers who lived at the Duchcov chateau at the times of Giacomo Casanova (1785–1798).
