DEAR FRIENDS, The tradition of glassmaking in the Czech lands goes back one thousand years. Ever since its origins, glass and glass jewellery became icons and significant country products that spread the fame of Czech glassmakers all over the world. The uniqueness of Czech glass was shaped by the historical tradition, the legacy of many generations of glassmakers, and the natural, economical and social conditions of the country. The mastery of the glassmakers and special quality material, along with numerous other elements, resulted in a special and specific “Bohemian style”, clear cut, marked with organic harmony prevailing over the glass substance, its outer shape and decoration. The term “Bohemian glass” started to be used to denote the technique of cutting and grinding crystal in 17 th century. "Bohemian Crystal" indicated clear glass that resembled geniune mountain crystals.

Bohemian glass has been traditionally considered and excellent trade commodity, topquality and specific trademark on foreign markets. The production of crystal chandeliers started in 1724. The French King Louis XI equipped the palaces in Versailles and Fontainebleau with Czech chandeliers, setting an example to other royal courts in Europe. Today you can find Czech crystal chandeliers, for example, in the Royal Opera in Rome, La Scala in Milan, and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

Glass jewellery has been inseparable from the Czech lands. The centers of their production have been located near Jablonec nad Nisou and the Iser Mountains, in North Bohemia, for more than 600 years. Glass jewellery from Bohemia has always been a symbol of high quality that satisfied the taste of customers from all corners of the planet. Czech fashion jewellery decorates many Czech and foreign celebrities; iconic fashion brands like Nina Ricci, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Prada, and Karl Lagerfeld do not hesitate to use Czech glass jewellery. You probably won’t resist their miraculous beauty, either.

One of the key factors that influenced the historical and contemporary success of Bohemian glass was the development and the high standard of a glassmaking education system. In Kamenický Šenov, the first School of Glassmaking in the world was opened in 1856. The Czech glass school gained world renown thanks to the extraordinary sense of Czech master glassmakers and artists for the specific character of the glass, the cultivated artistic expression, and the original production techniques. Glassmaking in the Czech lands has never been limited to just plain reproduction. Thanks to its creative character, it has always had a close relationship with fine arts; the skills and craftsmanship of Czech glassmakers helped numerous excellent Czech artists to reach their world fame. At the beginning of the 1960s, exhibitions and presentations abroad (Milano Triennale 1957 and 1960, World Expo in Brussels 1958) brought Czech glass onto a leading position among the glass worldpowers.

When you visit the Czech Republic, let yourselves to be charmed by the beauty of traditional Czech glass products, their originality, gracious shapes, play of lights and colors, excellent design, and high quality. Along with memories, you can acquire a little piece of a Czech cultural heritage.

CITY GALLERY City Gallery Prague PRAGUE Jaroslav Horejc (1886–1983) / Master of the Czech Art Deco

28 September 2016 – 8 January 2017 The House at Stone Bell (U Kamenného zvonu) Old Town Square 13, Prague 1 Open Tue–Sun, 10 am to 8 pm Jaroslav Horejc is without doubt one of the most significant Czech personalities of the 20th century arts. He has always been appreciated for his versatility, which impacted both the sculpting and applied arts. His work, however, remained a solitary point of view without followers. The isolationism stigma was ruptured in the 1980s when his work became part of the Art Deco international phenomenon. The exhibition in the House at Stone Bell presents Horejc’s work for the first time in a special set interlinking both spheres. It also commemorates an extensive set of works presented at the Czech section of the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925. Chalice Cannan-Land of Affluence and Fruits, 1919–1922, Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague

It includes four famous engraved chalices that rank among the most significant artworks of Czech glass of the 20th century, which awarded the artist the Grand Prix in the glass category.

The Czechoslovak pavilion exhibition also presented four glass chandeliers whose allegoric decorations were designed by Jaroslav Horejc. The chandeliers can still be seen in the World Trade Organization building in Geneva. The art potential of Jaroslav Horejc found its use in numerous architectonic assignments, and the exhibition presents his works for the St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle, namely his famous four seasons allegories, and a relief with candelstand for the Johann Amos Comenius mausoleum in Naarden, the Nederlands (1937).

THE PRAGUE The Prague SpringSPRING 2017 International Music Festival 2017

12 May – 2 June 2017

The program of the 72 nd edition of the Prague Spring International Music Festival includes about 45 concerts and its diversity will satisfy both the big orchestra and chamber music enthusiasts, contemporary music lovers and those whose hearts beat for the authentic interpretation of music from the past. The showcase of prominent overseas symphonic orchestras and the festival itself will be opened by an orchestra considered by many to be the world’s best: The Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Daniel Barenboim. It is the seventh time this orchestra is attending Prague Spring, but the first time to receive the honor of opening the festival.

Daniel Barenboim © Ivan Malý

The two concerts of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with its chief-conductor Peter Oundjian promise a special experience. The orchestra presented its extraordinary qualities on its opening concert of the Prague Spring Festival in 2013. Interestingly, this orchestra was led by Czech conductor Karel Ančerl after his emigration from Czechoslovakia in 1969. Both concerts will feature excellent soloists: Maxim Vengerov, the legendary violinist who returns after 18 years, and Jan Lisiecki, a pianist star of the emerging soloists generation, just 21 years old.

The program of foreign symphonic orchestras will be closed by the famous Orchestre de Paris, with its German conductor Thomas Hengelbrock. The Czech audience remembers him – and Oundjian – for the excellent interpretation of the Bedřich Smetana’s My Coutry at the opening concert in 2015. The festival will commemorate the 450 th anniversary of the birth of Claudio Monteverdi with a concert of a leading Italian ensemble dedicated to authentic interpretation of old vocal music styles: the La Compagnia del Madrigale.

After 22 years, Prague Spring will welcome one of the founding fathers of the movement of scholarly interpretation of ancient music: William Christie, who heads the British Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

The theme of the 2017 program focuses on music of the Hispanic circle. The Forma Antiqva ensemble will present the audience a truly unique genre of the musical-theatrical art of the turn of the 18 th and 19 th centuries: the “Tonadilla Escénica”. The Zapico Brothers trio will be bringing gems of Spanish instrumental works from the 18 th century for cembalo, teorba, and baroque guitar, and the singer Rocío Márquez, a star of Spanish flamenco, will perform songs with lyrics by Federico García Lorca.

In 2017, the festival will once again include the “Chamber Music Weekend” project, this time titled “Prejudices, Obstacles, Persecution”. The ten weekend concerts will feature pianist and artist in residence Alexander Lonquich, violinist Vilde Frang, violoncellist Nicolas Altstaedt, the Sacconi Quartet, Wihan Quartet and David Oistrach Quartet, among others.

A concert prepared together with the Berg Orchestra will focus on the younger audience with the world premiere of a composition by Petr Wajsar commissioned by the Prague Spring Festival, which intends to follow up the Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra with a perspective of the contemporary young listeners of the beginning of the 21st century.

An original concert is being prepared in cooperation with the the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague. It will take place in the National Technical Museum and will present the world premiere of a composition by Jan Trojan, also commissioned by the Prague Spring Festival, that will use a combination of live musicians, electro-acoustic music, and “robotic” speakers moving among the listeners.

The festival’s closing concert will meet all the parameters of a unique event. The festival will culminate under the baton of Krzysztof Penderecki, one of the greatest personalities of the second half of the 20 th century. He will present his own famous symphony, the Seven Gates of Jerusalem, composed to celebrate the 3000 th anniversary of the foundation of the city. (see p. 3)

JIŘÍAnderle ANDERLE CABINET Jiří – Cabinet– of Curiosities 15 September 2016 – 15 January 2017 Municipal House, Prague

The Municipal House in Prague hosts a retrospective exhibition of works by worldfamous graphic artist and painter Jiří Anderle, honoring the artist’s 80 th birthday. The extensive and diverse body of work which Jiří Anderle (born 1936) has created over more than fifty years includes prints, drawings, paintings and sculptures. The varied forms and techniques used by Anderle share a common denominator: critical humanist perception focused on specific historical phenomena and universal human themes. In a specific and timeless way, his graphic and picture series express the existential anxiety of man. At the same time, he perceives the world as a theater (Theatrum Mundi), and his works are unified by his belief in humanity. Since he first appeared on the Czech art scene in the mid-1960s, Jiří Anderle has earned a unique place not only in the Czech cultural context, but internationally as well. The number of Anderle’s individual exhibitions is getting close to one hundred. He has received around 40 pres-

tigious awards and his work is represented in the collections of many Czech museums and galleries and around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He gained his renown primarily through his graphic art, in which he developed unmistakable artistic expression based on the mastery and combining of various printmaking techniques. The current exhibition makes it possible to form one’s own opinion on the artist’s development. However, Richard Drury, the curator, points that he could only present the “tip of the iceberg” of Anderle’s work; though he has tried to present the most various themes and periods of the artist’s career. The exhibition is held under the patronage of the Prague Mayor Adriana Krnáčová.

The 140 prints on display represent graphic art production from the colonial and the Revolution periods, to iconic works of the 20 th century. 19 October 2016 – 28 February 2017 Kinsky Palace Stables Open daily except Monday, 10 am–6 pm

You can support the project purchasing special photographs at the exhibition or through www.buddhovydcery.cz. The revenues will be used to support the education and improvement of the basic life conditions of Buddhist nuns in North India.

The National Gallery in Prague is hosting a charity exhibition documenting the life of Buddhist nuns in the Himalayas. It is organized in cooperation with the Most Pro Tibet (Bridge for Tibet) non-profit organization, and was included into the accompanying program of the Forum 2000 Conference – a Festival of Democracy, which took place in Prague, in midOctober. The Forum was founded by former Czech President, and Dalai Lama’s close friend, Václav Havel. The exhibition was organized under auspices of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The photographer Olivier Adam, together with his partner and journalist Dominique Butet, spent more than eight years documenting the path of Buddhist nuns in five monasteries in the Himalayas, in North India. The Tibetan Nuns Project was founded in 1987, and has helped to open primary and secondary schools. In December 2016, for the first time ever, 20 nuns will be awarded the title “geshema”, similar to a doctorate of Buddhist philosophy, allowing them to become teachers in convents. Paintings by Lucas Cranach and His Circle from the Collections of the National Gallery in Prague The exhibition “Cranach from All Sides” will present the German Renaissance painter and his circle not only via unique works from the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, but also via the most interesting results of research conducted by a team of experts from the Cranach Digital Archive Düsseldorf, headed by Gunnar Heydenreich. The group of the Prague works linked with the artist’s name is extraordinarily heterogeneous and includes very attractive and popular scenes such as The Old Fool, Christ and the Adulteress and The Original Sin (Adam and Eve). The research has revealed many yet unknown facts about these and other works, as well as information about their technological process and, especially their copies. The exhibition in the Sternberg Palace will introduce visitors to the most recent discoveries linked with the most precious works held by the National Gallery in Prague, and also present the Cranach work-

His works attracted not only intellectuals like Guillaume Apollinaire and collectors such as Wilhelm von Uhde, but also many artists. In his paintings he anticipated or resolved similar problems as Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Frida Kahlo, etc. He was highlighted as a source of inspiration in particular by the group known as Der Blaue Reiter, headed by Vassily Kandinsky.

This exhibition has been realised in cooperation with the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, on the basis of a concept prepared by Gabriella Belli (Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia) and Guy Cogeval (Musée d’Orsay). The authors place Rousseau in the context of other, no less famous artists and try to trace the stimuli linked with archaism, classicism and his original vision of realism. The National Gallery in Prague will present Henri Rousseau in the autumn of 2016, after the exhibition in the Musée d’Orsay has closed. NATIONAL GALLERY PRAGUE National Gallery in Prague The Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia Comes Alive A historical jewel in the metropolis center After almost two years, the National Gallery in Prague has finished the revitalization of its oldest building, the St. Agnes of Bohemia Convent. This national cultural landmark has metamorphosed from purely gallery and historical rooms, into a place for relax and various cultural experiences. The convent opened its gates to the public for the first time on 25 October 2016.

a busy city; a remnant of the original gardens. Although the monastery was closed down in 1782, its unique Gothic architecture has been remarkably well preserved. The National Gallery in Prague acquired the complex in 1963 and opened the north gate garden in the 1980s, only to be closed down by the floods in 2002. Visitors now have the chance to see for the first time the remnants of the monastery of the Friars Minor, and relax in the gardens.

The St. Agnes Convent, the former seat of the Poor Clares and the Friars Minor, and the first Clarisses convent beyond the Alps, is one of the most significant Gothic structures in Prague. It was founded in the 1230s by the Přemyslid Princess Agnes of Bohemia, together with her brother King Wenceslas I. She joined the order in the new monastery and lived there as head of the community until her death. Visitors can see the most important rooms, including the St. Agnes oratory, the St.Salvatore Shrine, and the St. Frances Church, where the remains of King Wenceslas I rest.

Just a few of the passers-bys know that an oasis can be found behind the monastery walls, in the heart of

Along with restored, tiny, colorful houses, it offers a new permanent exhibition presenting the life in the Lane throughout its 500 years of existence. Visitors can peek in the household of a famous seer, learn about the dwellings of the goldsmiths, the shooter, and the castle healer, while others have traditional little shops and a small exhibition of items discovered during the most recent archaeological survey. The exhibition in the Golden Lane can be visited as part of two sightseeing tours. The access to the Lane is free from 4 pm to 9 pm but the exhibitions are closed.

NATIONAL THEATRE National Theatre Tosca

been a permanent part of the repertoire on the stage ever since. The renowned French director Arnaud Bernard has been invited to stage the new production of Tosca.

Giacomo Puccini Premiered on 27 and 28 January, 2017 The National Theatre In 1889, Puccini saw in Florence a performance of La Tosca, an acclaimed play by the French author Victorien Sardou, an engrossing melodrama about love and hate, passion and death, against the backdrop of political intrigues and the struggle for freedom. The premiere of the opera, on 14 January 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, was a resounding success. Today, the opera-thriller set in 1800, in Italy, is one of the most popular worldwide. Puccini’s Tosca was first staged in Bohemia by the National Theatre in Prague, on 21 November 1903 and has

Viva la Mamma Gaetano Donizetti

Premiered on 9 and 10 February, 2017 The Estates Theatre An opera about opera – thus can be briefly characterised Donizetti’s dramma giocoso Conventions and Inconveniences of the Stage, also known as Viva la Mamma. The action takes place during the preparations and rehearsals for a new opera production, featuring singers, artists, theatre-makers and staff, both on stage and backstage. The conduct of the protagonists is funny, annoying, but also moving. And equally funny, annoying and moving is the behaviour of today’s descendants of Donizetti’s characters.

The timelessness of this operatic farce is actually what makes it so enthralling. In addition to an amusing plot, the audiences can also savour Donizetti’s brilliant bel canto music at its peak.

Nacho Duato

Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness. Premiered on 2 and 3 March, 2017 The National Theatre Music: Johann Sebastian Bach Choreography & Stage direction: Nacho Duato Every choreographer has a signature piece – the one work that particularly stands out in an artist’s ouevre; the basis of the worldwide reputation of an exceptional talent. The signature piece of the globally renowned Spanish creator Nacho Duato, the current artistic director of the Staatsballett Berlin, is indisputably the modern choreography Multiplicity.

The piece is made up of two parts, with the rapid first, Multiplicity, dominated by a wealth of choreographic variations, as they result from the very different musical excerpts of Bach’s music, The second half, Forms of Silence and Emptiness, is based solely on Bach’s Art of Fugue.

Forms of Silence and Emptiness, created for the European Capital of Culture 1999, Weimar. Behind the somewhat unwieldy title hides a unique tribute to the composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

TIME COFFEE… Time forFOR Coffee…

For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends, artists, journalists, and students. Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee.

The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and delicious espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too.

SWETT CHOCOLATE FAIRY Sweet moments with a chocolate fairy

In 2008, the company Viva Praha – The Finest Belgian Chocolate opened a retail store with the best Belgian chocolate in the very center of Prague, just a few steps from the Old Town Square, in Celetná. The store specializes in Belgian chocolate, hand-made by the best chocolatiers from the chocolate capital, Bruges, in Belgium. The freshness of chocolate plays a great role, and that is why at the Viva store you can find only the best products imported directly from artisan producers. Together with classical chocolate products, such as pralines, figures, and bars, at the Viva store you can also buy novelties of the chocolate world, for example chocolate with high content of antioxidants, organic chocolate, and pralines with unusual flavors and combinations. Those who do not like chocolate can enjoy nougat, marzipan, or homemade fudge. Right at the store, while sitting over a cup of coffee in the Jungle bar, you can enjoy cakes, original Belgian wafers, fresh fruits dipped in chocolate, and the original hot chocolate that boasts several awards. The selection is now also supplemented with a section of Belgian beer specialties. Besides chocolate, the store produces the so-called “Rock Candy”. The store has tables prepared for the manufacture of this treat, so you can see the process, which dates back more than 400 years. The store is joined to the ChocoStory chocolate museum – a member of an international network of museums with branches in Bruges, Paris, and Mexico. In the museum you can dive into the 3,000-year-old history of chocolate. You can learn when, where, and who used it for the first time, who brought it to Europe, how it spread, and how it is made today. You can also learn that chocolate is good for your health, and remember the good old times over a collection of chocolate wraps. In the showroom, our chocolatiers will show how pralines are made; and you can also taste them or to try the work with the chocolate yourselves in one of the workshops. Along with that you can see the largest chocolate cascade in the Czech Republic. In Celetná 10, you can dive into the fabulous world of chocolate and candy with all your senses.

St. Vitus Cathedral

This Gothic Cathedral, which was built over nearly six centuries, was finally completed in 1929. In the 10th century a rotunda originally stood in its place. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parléř, who also built the St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is adorned with frescoes and semi-precious stones; in the catacombs underneath there are tombs of Czech kings.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m2. The site of the castle was established in the 9th century, and in the 12th century the Romanesque palace was built. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the last reconstruction of the Royal Palace was carried out under the rule of the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, At that time (1497 to 1500) the famous Vladislav Hall was built in the late Gothic style. The castle was enlarged in the 16th century following the great fire in 1541. After World War I, the interior and gardens of the castle were redesigned by the architect J. Plečnik. The castle is the seat of the president of the republic and the historical and political centre of the city and the state. The changing of the guards takes place at Prague Castle every hour on the hour from 5:00 am to 10 pm. The guard changes at noon are accompanied by a solemn fanfare. See the map on page 46. It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many wellpreserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a four purpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is located, there used to be a vineyard and a utility garden in 1517. KONĚPRUSY CAVES

267 18 Karlštejn Tel.: +420 311 681 617 e-mail: karlstejn@npu.cz

www.hradkarlstejn.cz

The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.”

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360. ONEDAYTRIPSFROMPRAGUE KUTNÁ HORA

ČESKÝ KRUMLOV … a treasure trove full of history and arts Český Krumlov has been spinning its story for over 700 years, and each century has added a unique trait into its features. The result is a picturesque town proud of its architectural beauty and magical atmosphere.

Český Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a lively, cosmopolitan town with a unique atmosphere surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Dominated by a Castle stretching over the meandering Vltava River, Český Krumlov’s narrow cobblestone streets wind along romantic nooks between patrician houses, where you’ll find attractive exhibits of world-renown artists, music festivals, concerts, and theatre performances. The cosy inns, coffee shops, and ancient taverns entertain a diverse international crowd. (see p. 10)

Kutná Hora was an ancient mining town at the end of the 13th century. In the 14th century it was the second most significant town after Prague. In Kutná Hora, there are plenty of precious Gothic constructions such as the Cathedral of St Barbora (1388 to 1565), one of the most beautiful Czech Gothic buildings, and the Church of St James (1340–1420). A direct witness to the mining glory of Kutná Hora is the late Gothic style Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr) where the famous Prague grosches were minted. (see p. 96–97)

ONEDAYTRIPSFROMPRAGUE TŘEBÍČ

LITOMYŠL

Třebíč is a picturesque town with rich history and a lot of valuable architectural monuments. The most remarkable have been included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List – the St. Procopius Basilica and the Jewish Quarter with the Jewish Cemetery.

Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre, you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. Other places worth a visit are the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, with a lookout tower and the exhibition Angels on the Hill, and the former Bishop’s Gymnasium, which today houses a successfully restored museum. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest.

The Basilica, built in the Romanesque style with some early Gothic features, is one of the treasures of medieval architecture. The most valuable part of the Basilica is the crypt. The Jewish Quarter is the only evidence of Jewish culture outside the territory of Israel included in the UNESCO list and it’s a unique complex of 123 buildings, among them the Front and Rear Synagogue, and the Seligmann Bauer’s House, with an exhibition of a typical Jewish household.

ONEDAYTRIPSFROMPRAGUE ARCHITECTURE IN BRNO

TELČ Telč is one of the most sought-after cultural destinations, where you can pleasantly spend your free time. You can visit historical landmarks and the Telč undergrounds, now open to the public, located below most of the houses on the Zacharias of Hradec square and part of the chateau complex. You can also visit festivals, concerts, exhibitions at the city gallery, or a historical festival organized every year, moderated by the historical personalities Zacharias of Hradec, and Katerina of Wallenstein.

Photo: Villa Tugendhat by David Židlický It is said that Brno is a living gallery of functionalist architecture, where not a single one of the important names of that era is missing. The St. Johannus Nepomuceni pilgrimage church on Green Hill (Zelená hora) is a state-of-the-art work in the Bohemian baroque Gothic. Its extraordinary value was rewarded with its listing in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. It was built between 1719 and 1722 by one of the greatest Bohemian baroque architects, Jan Blažej Santini Aichel. The ambit surrounding the temple was built on a decagonal pattern while the temple itself has the shape of a pentagram. The entire complex has five entrances, inside the temple there are five chapels and five altars. On top of the cupola there is a big tongue, the attribute of St. Johannus Nepomuceni. The entire structure combines two architectonic styles: Gothic and baroque. The main altar features a saint, standing on a globe, optically rising up. St. Barbara’s Cathedral

KUTNÁHORA – UNESCO family member for 21 years Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In the Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, and the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city. Photo: Jiří Coubal and archive Italian Court

“Hrádek” (Little Castle), one of the most famous burghers’ houses in Kutná Hora, houses today the Czech Museum of Silver, with exhibitions on silver mining. The museum regularly appears on leading positions of TripAdvisor travelers’ surveys. Once again, it received the Certificate of Excellence in 2015. The museum also offers a tour through an original medieval silver mine, the St. George drift. Visitors are equipped with medieval mining gear, a helmet and torch. The drift is 35 meters deep, and 250 meters long. During the tour, visitors also pass by rooms filled with crystal clear water. (Open: April – November) Art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral in the Jesuit college.

BESKYDYMOUNTAINS – a bring your skis along! As soon as first snow covers the wooden houses, churches, and chapels in Beskydy Mountains, the hiking boots and bicycles of mountain sports enthusiasts are swapped for snowboards and skis of all kinds. Beskydy Mountains is a very popular destination for vacations and weekends among Moravia-Silesia citizens. The big cities of the region are not too far away. For example, the regional metropolis, Ostrava, the third largest city in the Czech Republic, is just some 25 km away. Moravia and Silesia share the Beskydy massif with southern Poland and the northern part of Slovakia. The mountain Lysá Hora (1323 m) dominates the Czech part of Beskydy; two ski lifts reach almost to its peak. Most often, many local ski centres start operating their cableways and ski lifts and maintaining their cross-country trails at the end of November or the beginning of December. Snow cover in Beskydy usually lasts a long time – up to 4 or 5 months. What is probably the most popular ski complex in the Pustevny mountain pass operates 8 ski lifts and a double-seat cableway, and maintains 46 kilometres of cross-country trails. Skiers also know and love to come to Velké Karlovice, Grúň, Soláň, Morávka, Bílá, Lomná, and Mosty u Jablunkova. Everywhere you will find high-quality services, ski rentals,

skiing and snowboarding schools, pleasant restaurants and hotels. Winter vacation has long meant more than just skiing. Skiers can enjoy pleasant moments in wellness centres and aquaparks, and appreciate the chance to find spa towns close to the mountains, in their foothills. You can recharge your energy in Lázně Darkov, a spa town with iodine-bromine healing water, a sauna complex with three kinds of saunas, and a cryocentre. You can choose from 17 healing and relaxation procedures. Just a few kilometres away from Ostrava, skiers can pamper their bodies – maybe lightly battered from skiing – in Sanatoria Klimkovice while they admire the view of the Beskydy skyline. This spa specialises in this. Very close to the ski runs in Frýdek-Místek you will find an aquapark. Bad weather in Beskydy is no problem, either. In Ostrava you can visit a zoo, the Silesian-Ostrava castle, and/or the largest mining museum in the Czech Republic. Hukvaldy is the birthplace of Leoš Janáček, probably one of the most famous Czech composer in the world. Rožnov pod Radhoštěm boasts an open-air museum of local rural structures. Further information on skiing in Beskydy, the region, and its beautiful countryside and precious landmarks can be found at:

KRKONOŠEMOUNTAINS Krkonoše is the largest and most popular Czech mountain range. As early as the 19 th century, it became a popular and sought-after tourist destination. Krkonoše is full of skiers and snowboarders today, too.

Lázně, along with numerous smaller, charming ones, are well-equipped with cableways, ski lifts, groomed cross-country trails, and cycling routes, as well as hotels, B & Bs, and everything necessary for a good vacation stay.

In spring, skiers are replaced by hikers. Their routes lead over mighty mountain ridges, glacier-formed valleys, table lands, and alpine meadows.

Krkonoše – an isle of tundra in the heart of Europe – boasts a unique mosaic of mountains eco-systems. The slopes are covered with forests and meadows, the upper parts of the flat ridges are home to dwarf pines and knee timber, and peat bogs. For its uniqueness and natural value, the first Czech national park, one of the largest in Europe, was declared in Krkonoše in 1963.

Tourists wander in the restful Krkonoše foothills, to the source of the river Elbe. Krkonoše and its foothills are also popular with cyclists. The most famous centers, like Špindlerův Mlýn, Pec pod Sněžkou, Harrachov, Rokytnice, and Jánské

INVITATIONTOTHEKARLOVYVARYREGION Are you thinking about your holidays or a trip? Try the Karlovy Vary Region. The Karlovy Vary Region lies in the west of the Czech Republic, on the border with Germany. Although it’s the country’s smallest region, when it comes to heritage sites and natural beauties, is one of the most beautiful and sought after by tourists. It’s also the place with the highest concentration of spa towns. It has five spa centres: Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Františkovy Lázně, Jáchymov and Lázně Kynžvart, where you can enjoy a therapy or relax throughout the year. Spa therapy has a long tradition here, with the first procedures dating back to the 14 th century, when King Charles IV (1316–1378) ordered the first spa to be built, which would be later called Karlovy Vary. If you are visiting the Karlovy Vary Region, do not forget about the castles from the Middle Ages – Cheb, Libá, Loket, Seeberg, Vildštejn – and the well preserved Baroque palaces – Bečov, Kynžvart, Chyše, Valeč. Bečov is the home of a unique monument of European significance, the reliquary of St. Maurus.

Admirers of unique natural beauties can visit, between March and November, the mysterious moonscape in the Soos National Natural Reserve – the remains of a salt-water lake that became a peat bog with natural springs. The slopes of Krušné Hory, famous for the quality of their ski centres and the extensive network of groomed cross-country ski trails, are located on the German border. The most popular ski centres are Klínovec, Boží Dar and Plešivec, with slopes of all degrees of difficulty, as well as tracks for free-ride and ski-cross, and parks where children can learn to ski. You can find more information on the tourist sites and points of interest in the Karlovy Vary Region at:
