DEAR FRIENDS, after the extensive renovations that took two years, we are happy to welcome back the first visitors to the historic building of the Museum of Decorative Arts, which now looks even more beautiful and has tripled the exhibition capacity. The museum opened its doors on 15 November 2017 to show the most precious items from its collections at the Director’s Choice exhibition until March 2018. Almost 300 exhibits, spanning from the Gothic and the Renaissance to the 20 th century, are very special for their design and significance and are also tied with interesting stories. The exhibition thus presents the fate of the museum collections throughout the periods of social metamorphosis. Not just individuals but institutions also experience the fate of a nation. From the time of its founding in 1885, the Museum of Decorative Arts has reflected the political circumstances that the society in Central Europe underwent during the 20 th century. The museum was founded during the Hapsburg monarchy thanks to active individuals, mostly members of the Chamber of Commerce and Trades in Prague, many of whom tied significant parts of their lives with the museum as collectors, art enthusiasts, and dedicated donors. Until the beginning of WW II, the museum was always integrated in international circles. This continuity was interrupted for the first time during the Nazi occupation, and then again after 1949, when the museum

was nationalized and went – along with the entire society – into international isolation. The museum collections were filled with confiscated property of noble families, entrepreneurs, and churches, the classical solicitation and expert activities were disrupted, and things would not be back to normal until 1989, when the museum renewed its international connections. The Director’s Choice exhibition will be accompanied by other exhibitions at the beginning of 2018: Habitat: Panel House Suburbs presenting the architecture of the typical urban houses of the second half of the 20 th century and the interior culture of the period will open in January. Small Stories is an itinerant exhibition of the Victoria and Albert Museum for Childhood that will bring about 1,900 miniature items of dollhouses furniture and accessories, telling about the everyday life in the last two centuries. The third planned big exhibition is a retrospective of the world famous photographer Josef Koudelka honoring his 80 th birthday. We have many great plans and you – the visitors – are part of them. We are looking forward to seeing you. Yours Museum of Decorative Arts

TIPSFORTRIPS Czech Touches of Music 16 December 2017 – 6 January 2018, Prague The Czech Touches of Music international music festival takes place every year during the Advent, Christmas, and New Year season. It is one of the biggest Czech festivals of classical music. Every year, the opening concert is in the Spanish Hall at the Prague Castle, on 16 December, the birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven. The grand opening gala concert of the 19 th edition of the festival is dedicated to Czech composer Jan Václav Stamic at the occasion of the 300 th anniversary of his birth (1717–1757). The Prague Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Petr Vronský, will accompany German violin virtuoso Sophia Jaffé. The program includes the Symphony in D Major Pastoral, by J. V. Stamic, the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra A Major, by W. A. Mozart, and the Eroica in E flat Major symphony, by Ludwig van Beethoven. www.ceskedotekyhudby.cz

The Czech Christmas Mass The time of Advent and Christmas The Czech Christmas Mass, composed by Jakub Jan Ryba (1765– 1815), every year, during Advent and Christmas, fills churches and concert halls with enthusiastic listeners and it is a symbol of the season. It was a big hit already in 1796, when it was premiered in a little church in Rožmitál, in Central Bohemia, during the midnight Christmas Mass. It was a modest performance, only a choir and the composer on organ. Today you can expect an orchestra, a big choir, and four soloists. According to experts, this compositions is not a classical Latin mass; it is melodic and poetic, which has made it so popular. Although the gifted composer, writer, and teacher Jakub Jan Ryba did not live a very happy life, this composition doesn’t bear any trace of it. He embodied in it joy that can still be felt by today’s listeners, both in Bohemia and throughout Europe. (see p. 61) www.prague.eu

Carnival in the Hlinsko Region 3, 10 February 2018, Hamry, Veselý kopec, Studnice, Vortová Cold January days in East Bohemia will spark with carnival parades, feasts and fun. The traditional masquerade processions, included in the UNESCO List, have their origin in the 19 th century and have remained unchanged ever since. The procession of masques is led by the “motley” and his spouse, who wish well and sing at every house. Four Turks dance, and the procession culminates with the “slaughter of a mare”. All masques have their traditional look and

function, and are worn mostly by men. The carnival is inseparable from hearty feast that includes doughnuts, sandwiches, and liquors. www.czechtourism.com

Jizerská padesátka – The Iser Mountains 50 16 – 18 February 2018, Iser Mountains (Jizerské hory), the Bedřichov ski center The Iser Mountains 50 is the most popular classic-style ski race in the Czech Republic and its 51 st edition takes place in 2018. In 1970, 14 Czech mountain climbers who had taken place in the race perished during an earthquake in the Andes, in Peru and the race has been organised as a tribute to them ever since. The starting post is the ski center in Bedřichov, where thousands of professionals (including world stars), amateurs (the capacity of the race is 4,800 runners) and visitors gather every year. The 50 kilometer long track runs through a beautiful mountain countryside with woods and meadows. Along with the main race, the organizers also prepare 30, 25 and 10 kilometers races. Since 1999 the Iser Mountains 50 is included into the Worldloppet world long distance races. With the Vasaloppet, in Sweden, and Birkenbeiner Renet, in Norway, it is the third longest long distance cross-country classic style ski race in Europe. MAN WITH BURNING Man with burning mane!MANE! Emil Filla and Surrealism, 1931–1939 28 October 2017 – 11 February 2018 Museum Kampa presents an exhibition of famous painter, graphic designer and sculptor Emil Filla, an important promoter in the Czech scene of the leading trends in modern art.

their first exhibition in January, 1935. They also allowed them to publish articles in the magazine “Volné směry” and their work was included in the Mánes library.

The exhibition is a showcase of the works of Filla and other representatives of Czech Surrealism like Jindřicha Štyrský, Toyen, Frantiešk Janoušek, Vincent Makovský, František Muzika and Alois Wachsman borrowed from state and private collections.

In return, Surrealists took Filla as their predecessor in the radical efforts to promote modern art, similar to what their Parisian counterparts had done with Picasso. During the 1930s, Filla went through a sharp development, impressed by the poetry of Surrealism, but he would remain within the Intuitive Surrealism and Concrete Irrationality.

In the early 1930s, Filla was the only representative of the original Osma group and the Group of Fine Artists to unwaveringly promote modern art, supporting the work of many authors of a younger generation who expressed themselves differently than him. He was a major help to a group of young painters, sculptors, poets and theorists who had been part of the Devětsil, but, from the early 1930s, had no fixed group or organisation.

Surrealism set Filla’s imagination free, ridding him of the remains of Synthetic and Lyrical Cubism. It also sharpened and unsettled his expression, leading him to an interest in ancient mythology. Emil Filla, Woman in chair

Thanks to him, several of those younger artists were able to be accepted as members of the Mánes Association of Fine Artists, where Filla was increasingly strengthening his leading position and was an important influence in the association’s exhibition and publication activities. Filla was quick to realise that there was a strong artistic current in Surrealism that could not stand outside the modern art of the time, even if Surrealist defined themselves against it. Thanks to Filla, Mánes took a group of Surrealists under its wing and lent them the association’s big hall for

At the occasion of the 100 th anniversary of the founding of the republic, the festival will present music of Czech and Slovak composers that found its response on the world stages and contributed to the creation of the modern cultural image of Czechoslovakia, today, the Czech Republic. In this context, it’s worth mentioning figures such as Bohuslav Martinů, Klement Slavický, Pavel Bořkovec, Miloslav Kabeláč, and Eugen Suchoň, as well as the representatives of the young Czech and Slovak generation: Ondřej Adámek, Lukáš Sommer, and Marko Ivanović. Several compositions have been commissioned directly by the Prague Spring festival and more than 10 compositions by Czech and world composers of the 20 th and 21 st centuries will have their world or Czech premiere.

The works of this leading composer and conductor will thread the entire festival and culminate with the concert of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Keith Lockhart, presenting the best pieces under the subtitle “Bernstein on Broadway”. A free series of the Ibero-American program (Spain, Catalonia, Portugal, South and Central America) will be presented in 2018. For example, Jordi Savall will present a project named “The city of two peaces: The History of Jerusalem”, and the series will include young jazz guitar player Amós Lora and his quartet.

During the festival, the Municipal House and Rudolfinum will host numerous world famous orchestras, such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam (rated as the world’s best) with Daniele Gatti and phenomenal pianist Daniil Trifonov, the Budapest Festival Orchestra with its chief conductor Iván Fischer, the Tonhalle Zürich with its artistic director Lionel Bringuier, and the Warsaw Philharmonic. The chamber ensembles coming to Prague will include the English Baroque Soloist with Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir, and Accademia Bizantina.

The opening will be commissioned symbolically to the most important Czech orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic conducted by Tomáš Netopil, while the closing concert will present the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by its chief conductor James Judd. The list of symphonic orchestras also includes the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the PKF-Prague Philharmonia, the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava, and the Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra. The festival doesn’t omit young visitors and artists and has prepared the 70 th edition of the Prague Spring International Music Competition. This year’s disciplines are cello and French horn. At the same time, festival’s musical matinees and concerts present young artists who already proved their qualities in this and other international competitions, such as Olga Šroubková (the last year’s violin competition winner), the cembalist Anastasia Antonova, accordionist Markéta Laštovičková, bass player Indi Stivín, soprano Slávka Zámečníková, conductor Chuhei Iwasaki, and organist Pavel Svoboda.

CITY GALLERY City Gallery Prague PRAGUE Jaroslav Róna 1997–2017

23 June – 31 December 2017 The Stone Bell House, Prague 1 Tue–Sun 10 am–8 pm Jaroslav Róna (*1957) first became known to the broad cultural public as a co-founder of the most notable Czech artistic collective of the generation of the 1980s, the Tvrdohlaví (“Hardheaded”) group. Still as its member, Róna already came to stand apart as a distinctively individual figure incompatible with

any of the dominant trends of that time, a fact which was also convincingly evidenced by his first major solo exhibition, staged by GHMP at The Stone Bell House, in 1997. This new exhibition, linking up chronologically with his work dating from 1997, brings together his sculptures and paintings produced over also the last twenty years. In a special section, it will feature videoinstallations acquainting visitors with the artist’s outdoor realizations, some of sometimes have attracted exceptional attention, sparking off exacerbated polemics and controversial response.

JOSEF LADA’S Josef Lada’s Sevens SEVENS A combination of modern architecture and the works of a classic Czech art

Dancing House Gallery 15 November 2017 – 1 April 2018

with a subtext of affable humour. His pictures are also an inseparable part of Czech culture and traditions, and his winter motifs are the typical image of the Czech Christmas.

In 2017, 130 years will have passed since the birth, and 60 since the death of the famous Czech artist Josef Lada. The Dancing House Gallery will commemorate these anniversaries with a large retrospective titled Josef Lada’s Sevens life with more than 400 works in four floors. It is an exceptional cultural event that combines classic Czech art with a visit to the Dancing House, an important building of Czech modern architecture.

The work of Josef Lada has accompanied many generations of Czech children, who grew up with his book illustrations. They know Kocour Mikeš (Mikeš the Cat), a typical character of Lada’s creation, or children rhymes and folk sayings with his illustrations. The illustrations for adult books are also a big part of his work. Among them, the most successful are the drawings for the writings of Jaroslav Hašek, in particular, The Good Soldier Švejk. The genius of the combination of text and illustration resulted in a book that is still read all over the world.

Josef Lada (1887–1957) was a renowned Czech painter, illustrator and caricaturist. His work is characterised by a stylised Czech village and its inhabitants,

Josef Lada’s Sevens is the biggest showcase of his work in Prague in ten years. The Dancing House Gallery will present in four floors a complete crosssection of his works that will include his most famous pictures and book, magazine and newspaper illustrations from the inter-war years, as well as lesser known works from the early years before WWI. It will also include a number of previously unpublished drawings, film costumes he designed and a reconstruction of his studio.

“The exhibition is symbolically hosted in the Dancing House, which is in Podskalí, a part of Prague between Jiráskovo nám. and Výtoň where Josef Lada lived. We are happy that, after a long time, we can again present the whole extent of his work, especially in connection with this year’s anniversaries”, says Josef Lada, grandson of the artist. The curators are Lev Pavluch, Jana Sommerová, Jindřich Ulrich and Josef Lada.

For the children, there will be presentations of Lada’s books, interactive games and screenings of fairy tales with his characters.

Josef Lada’s Sevens is at the Gallery of the Dancing House between 15/11/2017 through 1/4/2018, every day from 9 am to 8 pm.

Today, portrait galleries give us the opportunity to see reminders of personalities from families that used to make the country’s history, but now are long gone. We can look into the faces of men and women whose fates became legends as well as fictional images of legendary ancestors made for their distant offspring by contemporary portrait artists. The exhibition Images and Stories – Portraits of Renaissance Aristocracy presents a selection of preserved Renaissance portraits. Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria. A Renaissance Ruler and Art Patron between Prague and Innsbruck 3 November 2017 – 25 February 2018 Waldstein Riding School, Prague 1 In 2017, 470 years have elapsed since the arrival in Bohemia of Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria (1529 –1595), the son of Ferdinand I, King of Bohemia and Hungary, to represent the entire Habsburg dynasty. The same year also marks the 450 th anniversary of the archduke’s assumption of rule over Tyrol. Significant jubilees that launched a large exhibition Ferdinand II. 450 Jahre Tiroler Landesfürst in Ambras Castle in Innsbruck and a subsequent one in the National Gallery in Prague. The two exhibitions are jointly sponsored by Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, National Gallery in Prague, and Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Beginning in 1547, Archduke Ferdinand II stayed in the Czech lands, playing an important role in the political and social life. One important task was the reconstruction of the royal residence – Prague Castle. He also holds a significant place in history as an avid collector. He built one of the largest libraries of the time in Central Europe, a vast cabinet of curiosities inspired by Italian magnates, and an outstanding collection of armour belonging to famous men. The archduke’s example inspired many Czech aristocrats including his nephew, the future Emperor Rudolf II, whose pastimes were similar. Both the exhibitions, in Ambras Castle and the Waldstein Riding School in Prague, have a common theme. Visitors will see more than three hundred exhibits of various kinds, from paintings, precious arts and crafts objects, Renaissance armour, and valuable documents,

Francesco Terzio, Portrait of Archduke Ferdinand II to products of nature and curiosities from his collections, as well as everyday objects of the archduke and his family. More than half of the exhibits are lent from foreign collections. Loans from Czech institutions will be similarly exceptional. The exhibition not only seeks to introduce the archduke to the public as a historic figure strongly connected with the destiny of the Czech lands and the Renaissance art, but also as a man with personal relationships and interests. NATIONAL THEATRE National Theatre Billy Budd

or should he abide by the law of war? He does not prevent the tragedy and the memory of his fateful failure will haunt him throughout his life. Billy Budd is a purely masculine and, after Peter Grimes, the second “nautical” opera of Britten’s, in which the sea, the rocking of the waves and the gusts of wind are reflected in every single bar. The National Theatre will present the opera in its Czech premiere, in the original version, made up of four Acts.

Benjamin Britten Premiered on 18 & 20 January 2018 The National Theatre Prague Billy Budd, by the British composer Benjamin Britten (1913–1976), is based on Herman Melville’s eponymous novel and tells the story of the events that took place on board a British battleship during the Napoleonic Wars. Britten was a passionate pacifist with a great sense of justice, and he personally resented violence, be it in war or committed on individuals. All these topics are afforded a significant role in the opera Billy Budd, in which a naïve and trustful young man becomes the object of hatred on the part of a sadistic manipulator, master-atarms Claggart, who falsely accuses Billy of inciting the crew to mutiny. Billy inadvertently kills his torturer and is duly sentenced to death. Captain Vere faces an agonising decision: should he pardon the innocent boy,

create another opera. Along with Mozart’s inspired music, Beaumarchais’s brilliant play, which served as the basis for Lorenzo da Ponte’s no less fabulous libreto, is the reason why Le nozze di Figaro has never ceased to enchant audiences and performers alike.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Premiered on 1 & 3 February 2018 The Estates Theatre Prague There is just one still operational theatre in the world at which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart personally conducted performances of his operas: the Estate Theatre in Prague, on whose stage Mozart’s music has been played since 1783, when it presented the opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail. In the wake of the resounding success Le nozze di Figaro had in Prague, three years later, in January 1787, the composer paid his first visit to the city for the world premiere of his Symphony No. 38 in D major and to conduct a production of an opera that earned the audience’s immense enthusiasm and resulted in his being commissioned to

MUSEUM DECORATIVE ARTS Museum of OF Decorative Arts in Prague

After two years, the renovation of the main building of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague has been completed.

The library on the ground floor of the north wing, with the restored historical furniture, has been modernised to meet modern standards.

Visitors can once again admire the permanent exhibitions of the museum’s rich collections, that include items of crystal, porcelain, ceramics, wood and metal, as well as furniture, textile, clothes, toys, jewellery, clocks and watches, and photos.

Three of the rooms on the ground floor of the southern wing will be used for temporary exhibitions, while the south-eastern room has been designed to be multifunctional, for exhibitions, and social events, concerts, and lectures.

The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague was founded in 1885 by the city’s Business and Trade Chamber. The construction of the building began in February 1897, according to the project of Czech architect Josef Schulz. It was completed very quickly, in December of the following year, and was inaugurated in 1899 with a Christmas exhibition. It was the last building of its type in the Neo-Renaissance style, with impressively decorated interiors (Josef Schulz also designed the National Museum building on Wenceslas Square, and collaborated on the design of the Rudolfinum, located opposite to the Museum of Decorative Arts).

The restoration of the exhibition rooms on the 1 st and 2 nd floors (seven rooms of 1,180 m 2 each) was carried out in order to create a universal space for permanent exhibitions. The HVAC system, the central lightning control, the window shading and the security systems have also been modernised. The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague opened its doors to the first visitors on 15 November 2017. The welcome short-term exhibition presents the most interesting exhibits from the museum’s collection.

Seventeen rooms with restored original decorations, as well as a newly built patio with a gift shop and restaurant await their visitors. The museum’s garden has also been opened. It has been restored as it was in 1940, when it was built for an exhibition on new architecture.

BOATBREWERY

– a rarity on the river Vltava

Republika® Lager, and the 13° Plato Monarchie® Dark Lager tasting of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Other beer specialties will be regularly rotating on the tap: Irish Stout, English India Pale Ale and the strongest beer in the Czech Republic with 34° Plato, appropriately named “Titanic”. This beer will be available at the end of this year in 0,33 l bottles.

“With this project I have fulfilled several of my childhood dreams,” says Vojtěch Ryvola, founder of this unconventional brewery. “I always longed for a boat, and I also wanted to have a restaurant where you can have a nap and rest after a good meal. For years, I had dreamed about brewing a batch of beer on the Vltava. I am a patriot and consider Czech beer our national treasure. On top of everything, our boat offers a beautiful view of Prague Castle.”

The lower deck houses a beer hall with hot and cold meals, smoked delicacies and a direct view of the lagering tanks. If you love fish, do not miss a unconventional specialty: marinated fishburger. Grilled specialties will be offered on the deck during the summer months. The upper deck offers a relaxation section with 8 deck chairs on sunny days for those who want to enjoy the panoramic view of Prague, from the Petřín Hill to Strahov and Prague Castle. The designers have not forgotten the children: there is a mini-playground with a sand box and a slide on the terrace.

A unique boat-brewery, the only one on the Vltava, and Czech rivers in general, now has fulfilled the dreams of its creator, and Prague visitors’, too. On three decks, visitors can enjoy a brewery, highquality Old-Bohemian cuisine, an elegant restaurant, an original on-board bar, deck chairs, and showers. On the main deck there is the a la carte restaurant, kitchen, and a two-tun 500 liter brewhouse and, in a glass-walled room, two 5 hl and two 10 hl open fementation vessels. This is a place where gourmet experiences are enriched by the aroma of malt and hops brewing. You can see and, above all, taste the result of the process, a golden brew with a creamy head. The choice of beers on tap always includes four kinds named after Czech boats: Legie® (Legion), Republika® (Republic)and Monarchie® (Monarchy). The lovers of bitter beers can enjoy the full-bodied Legie®, with 10° Plato, the well-balanced, 12° Plato

The Boat Brewery anchors on a steady place in the center of Prague, by the right bank, under the Štefánik Bridge. It is not a classical boat but it is able to sail at various occasions or upon request. It can host parties or you can just come to relax after sightseeing in Prague. From September there are regular concerts of different genres from jazz to country and folk. Come and you will understand, especially if you love beer, good food, and an unconventional view of the charming Prague panorama.

And how to say “Good Bye” to the Boat Brewery? Unconventionally. You can choose the sailors’ “Ahoy” or the traditional brewmasters’ “May God Give Luck”.

St. Vitus Cathedral

This Gothic Cathedral, which was built over nearly six centuries, was finally completed in 1929. In the 10th century a rotunda originally stood in its place. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parléř, who also built the St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is adorned with frescoes and semi-precious stones; in the catacombs underneath there are tombs of Czech kings.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m2. The site of the castle was established in the 9th century, and in the 12th century the Romanesque palace was built. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the last reconstruction of the Royal Palace was carried out under the rule of the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, At that time (1497 to 1500) the famous Vladislav Hall was built in the late Gothic style. The castle was enlarged in the 16th century following the great fire in 1541. After World War I, the interior and gardens of the castle were redesigned by the architect J. Plečnik. The castle is the seat of the president of the republic and the historical and political centre of the city and the state. The changing of the guards takes place at Prague Castle every hour on the hour from 5:00 am to 10 pm. The guard changes at noon are accompanied by a solemn fanfare. See the map on page 44. It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many wellpreserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a four purpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is located, there used to be a vineyard and a utility garden in 1517. Its construction started on 16 March 1891 and was finished on 20th August of the same year. The tower is located at an altitude of 324 m above sea level and is 60 m tall. It

form the most significant part of the interior decoration. Most of the sculptures in the church are works by I. F. Platzer. The oldest sculpture in the church is Our Lady of Foyen on the left altar, brought by the Jesuits from Belgium in 1629. The tower of the church (the baroque belfry) actually never was an integral part of the church as it was an independent property owned by the Lesser Town of Prague. It served as the bell- and observation-tower. Important facts about the church: Height of the cupola: 50 m inside; 70 m outside; 79 m with the clerestory Width of the church: 40 m • Width of the nave: 30 m Length of the church: 60 m (without the stairs) Surface area of the murals: 3000 m 2 The church is open daily: 9 am–5 pm (III–X), 9 am–4 pm (XI–II) The Observation Tower open daily: 10 am–6 pm (XI–II), 10 am–8 pm (III, X), 10 am–10 pm (IV–IX) Admission: 70 CZK (the Church); 100 CZK (the Belfry)

TIME COFFEE… Time forFOR Coffee…

For 100 years, Prague cafés have been places for pleasant encounters of friends, artists, journalists, and students. Some have vanished, but some still offer elegant interiors, comfort, morning newspapers, and – of course – good coffee.

The Slavia Café is one of Prague’s legends. It is a centre of cultural and intellectual life. Its traditional atmosphere and unique interior – accented with the famous picture “Absinth Drinker” – invite you for a cup of hot and delicious espresso. Our pastry shop prepares daily home-made cakes, and we offer quiet breakfasts, business lunches, or romantic evening moments over a glass of wine with a view of the National Theatre, Prague Castle, and the river Vltava. Of our 320 seats, the one with the best view awaits you, and we’ll do our best to make the Slavia Cafe a special place for you, too.

LIVE PIANO DAILY FROM 5 PM TO 11 PM

The Louvre Café was founded in 1902. We

are honoured to carry on the tradition of this establishment, which has been a top café culture and cultural life centre ever since its origin. We are proud to have experienced repeated visits by personalities of world-wide significance such as Franz Kafka, Karel Čapek, Albert Einstein, and many others. The café opens at 8 am and offers a wide selection of breakfasts and newspapers. The restaurant serves traditional Czech cuisine, and light fare specialties. The non-smoking part of the restaurant, and several salons, seat parties of up to 15–20 guests. We maintain the tradition of “café sports” – thus you can borrow chess sets and play pool on one of five pool tables. On hot days you can enjoy a stay on an openair summer terrace. Covering 400 sq m, our newly opened Louvre Photogallery displays the best works of leading Czech photographers. The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.”

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360. St. Barbara’s Cathedral

– UNESCO family member for 23 years

KUTNÁHORA Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, and the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, and the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city. Photo: Jiří Coubal and Pavel Gryč Italian Court

“Hrádek” (Little Castle), one of the most famous burghers’ houses in Kutná Hora, is today the home of the Czech Museum of Silver, with exhibitions on silver mining. The museum regularly appears on leading positions of TripAdvisor travelers’ surveys. Once again, it received the Certificate of Excellence in 2015. The museum also offers a tour through an original medieval silver mine, the St. George drift. Visitors are equipped with medieval mining gear, a helmet and a torch. The drift is 35 meters deep, and 250 meters long. During the tour, visitors also pass by rooms filled with crystal clear water. (Open: April – November) Art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral in the Jesuit college.

HRADECKRÁLOVÉ – the Salon of the Republic

www.hkregion.cz

The biggest town of the region has a history of a medieval dower city of Bohemian queens and a military fortress. It is an admired, unique urban complex. Its denomination as the “Salon of the Republic” is not just a mere nickname used by its proud citizens, but a result of the high quality urban development between the world wars. Between 1926 and 1928, the enlightened major of the city, František Ulrich, the architect Jan Kotěra, and the urbanist Josef Gočár were the three men who can be credited that Hradec Králové is not just another mediocre city. A regular circle cut by radials make it a unique urban location, both in the Czech Republic and abroad. We can dare to say that no other city has something like that. After the demolition of the fortress of the old Hradec, the new “Great” Hradec could be built on a greenfield site. This gave great scope for action to Josef Gočár and he used it in full. Both Gočár’s circle, and a set of valuable buildings of other significant architects who gathered in Hradec Králové carried on a sophisticated urban concept that turned this city into the Salon of the Republic. See for yourselves the Hradec Králové genius loci and take a stroll around the Salon of the Republic, going past Art-Nouveau, Functionalistic and Constructivist buildings, walking the monumental riverside and pedestrian boulevards to realize why the unique urban concept and structures by Kotěra, Gočár and other significant architects of the beginning of the 20 th century earned the city this honorable title.

KUKS

THE STORY OF A PLACE THAT HAS FOUND ITSELF ANEW

The Kuks Baroque Complex was built at the beginning of the 18 th century by František Antonín Špork (1662–1738).

100,000 people came to the Elbe valley near Dvůr Králové, in East Bohemia, to admire the rebirth of this Baroque gem.

Charmed by the grandiosity of the social life at the court of Luis XIV in Versailles, Špork decided to realize his vision of “heaven on earth” in a deserted valley of the Elbe when he was only thirty years old.

Along with classical sightseeing tours, in August visitors can travel to the times of Baroque theater with the Theatrum Kuks Festival, enjoy a vintage in September, and celebrate St. Hubertus day in October.

Only fragments remain of the chateau, the spa buildings, the colonnade, the horse racing park, the library, and the theater that hosted ensembles from all over Europe. But the hospital building for old men, the mighty Holy Trinity Church with the Špork family tomb, the monastery garden, and the open-air gallery of allegoric statues of the Virtues and the Vices by Matyáš Bernard Braun have survived to these days.

These Baroque Festivals bring Kuks back to its days of glory. The valley will once again live the Baroque whirl that was last time experienced by Count Špork with live scenes from the period, theatrical performances, parades of noblemen and court ladies, a military camp, jugglers, musicians, jousting, and a fire show in the evening.

The reopening of the complex after its restoration attracted 140,000 visitors in 2015, and last year, over

KRKONOŠEMOUNTAINS Krkonoše is the largest and most popular Czech mountain range. As early as the 19th century, Krkonoše became a popular and sought-after tourist destination. Krkonoše is full of skiers and snowboarders today, too.

Lázně, along with numerous smaller, charming centers, are well-equipped with cableways, ski lifts, groomed cross-country trails, and cycling routes, as well as hotels, B & Bs, and everything necessary for a good vacation stay.

In the spring, skiers are replaced by hikers. Their routes lead over mighty mountain ridges, glacier-formed valleys, table lands, and alpine meadows.

Krkonoše – an isle of tundra in the heart of Europe – boasts a unique mosaic of mountainous eco-systems. The slopes are covered with forests and meadows, the upper parts of the flat ridges are home to dwarf pines and knee timber, and peat bogs. For its uniqueness and natural value, the first Czech national park, one of the largest in Europe, was declared in Krkonoše in 1963.

Tourists wander in the restful Krkonoše foothills, and to the source of the river Elbe. Krkonoše and its foothills are also popular with cyclists. The most famous centers, like Špindlerův Mlýn, Pec pod Sněžkou, Harrachov, Rokytnice, and Jánské
