FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND: A self-guided tour of the Magic City

Billings is the comfort zone of the West. In the Yellowstone Valley below, the city bustles with shopping, industry, art galleries, 200 restaurants, Billings Mustangs baseball, first-class live theater and entertainment, 4,000 hotel/motel rooms, horse, car and motorcycle racing, new movie theaters, performing arts theaters, museums and historic attractions. Multitudes of parks and river accesses offer outdoor fun. Geographically, Billings is divided into the West End, Downtown and Historic District, The Heights, Lockwood, and the southside/southwest corridor. The West End Access the West End from the Zoo Drive I-90 Exit 443 or the City Center Exit 446. ZooMontana is just off Exit 443. See its acres of habitat filled with exceptional animal species. It opens at 10 a.m. daily. Shiloh Road, which intersects Zoo Drive, will lead you to the major West End arterials of Shiloh Road, King Avenue, Central, Broadwater, Grand, and Rimrock Road. From Shiloh, Rimrock Road leads you to Zimmerman Trail and up to the top of the rimrocks. Turn right (east) on Highway 3 to reach the airport. Exits 443 and 446 lead you to West End hotels, and a wide variety of shopping and dining. Take I-90 Exit 447 to reach the Bureau of Land Management State Office, and the motels and businesses surrounding it. Exit 447 is also the access to Amend Park, Riverfront Park and the Audubon Center on South Billings Boulevard. It offers a small lake with non-motorized boating, picnicking, fishing, equestrian trails (horses not provided) and hiking. The park covers several acres and offers a perfect place to get some exercise. There is plenty of shade. No admission is charged. Downtown If you are coming from the west, Downtown is most easily accessed at Exit 450. North 27th Street is the spine of Downtown, leading straight to the airport. First, Third, and Sixth Avenues North are downtown one-way arterials running west. (First Avenue becomes a two-way at North 18th Street.) Montana Avenue, Second and Fourth Avenues North are downtown one-way arterials running East. If you are coming from the east, Downtown and the Heights can be accessed from Exit 452. Take First Avenue to go Downtown. The restored train depot on Montana Avenue in the Historic District, where passengers boarded in days gone by, is now a great place to tour and take pictures. It is a neighbor to a great selection of restaurants, shops and art. Billings Historic District buildings and businesses have been renovated and refurbished back to the bustling atmosphere of the days when the Magic City sprang from the fertile banks of the Yellowstone River. Enjoy the modern-day cobblestones, ironwork any blacksmith would be proud of, flowers and trees. The heart of Downtown Billings is at Second Avenue North and Broadway (North 28th Street). Skypoint points to the Big Sky of Montana and offers you shade and shelter. You’ll find helpful maps and merchant lists in kiosks around town. Billings Heights If you are coming from the east along I-94, we recommend that you take Exit 23 at Pompeys Pillar (28 miles east of Billings). Visit the National Monument that bears Captain William Clark’s carved signature. Then proceed along Highway 312. Stop in Worden and Huntley to discover unhurried businesses and friendly people. Follow 312 into Billings Heights. The Heights is a geographical benchland that rises above the Yellowstone River Valley. At Pemberton Lane, turn right and check out the wildlife displays at the Fish, Wildlife and Parks center overlooking Lake Elmo. Return to Main Street for a wide variety of food and shopping. Main Street in the Heights will lead you to MetraPark, the home of MontanaFair, concerts, sports shows, ag shows, trade shows, motorsports and rodeos. Pose for a picture in front of the statue of world famous Saddle Bronc Champion Dan Mortensen. It is right in front of the MetraPark arena.

The Boothill Cemetery Monument, on the corner of E. Airport Road and Route 87, is a burial ground for two score residents of Coulson — a rough and ready forerunner of Billings — most of whom “cashed it in with their boots on.” The last burial at Boothill was in 1882.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL

Located in the streets of downtown Billings, the Strawberry Festival is a long-time cherished community event that opens the summer season on the second Saturday in June. In the heart of our urban center, experience rich diversity in arts and crafts, fresh produce and strawberries, the scents of foodtruck fare from Asian to BBQ, live street entertainment, and a 60’ strawberry shortcake created by the Chefs and Cooks of Montana. With an interactive children’s area including free crafts and activities for all ages, this draws people throughout the northwest region to Downtown Billings under Skypoint at 2nd Ave N. and Broadway. 10,000 people enjoy the Strawberry Festival every summer; families, children, local professionals, college students, and retired citizens comprise a comprehensive demographic.

Works by nineteenth- and twentieth-century masters join contemporary works from the YAM’s collection The Yellowstone Art Museum is pleased to announce an exclusive exhibition comprising loans of work by European master artists and works from the YAM’s permanent collection. The museum continues to attract loans of impeccable quality, giving area art lovers unique opportunities to view world-class works in relationship to regional contemporary paintings and sculptures. Throughout recorded time, artists have used visual forms to comment on or express the relationship between humankind and the spaces we have occupied in our collective history and psychology. In this exhibition, viewers can consider the evolution of visual abstraction spanning the stretch of time from the late nineteenth century to today, from France to New York to Montana. Selections reveal the pursuit of artistic excellence in conveying the relationship between “figure” and “ground” in a variety of distinguished attitudes towards visual abstraction. These art works range from Romantic realism to Neoclassicism to the Modernist “isms” of Cubism, Constructivism, and Surrealism. The exhi-

bition emphasizes the magnitude of expression that exists in the visual world, exemplifying the adoration of form and content. This remains a central tenet of the artistic community even in today’s age of artmaking that has no easily identifiable predominant “isms” of its own. The aim of the exhibition is to celebrate three centuries of artistic vision. The beholder

will no doubt find abundant intersections between these works along with the obvious collisions that occur as the result of the broad human imagination that seeks to define our “primal urge” to know who we are and where we exist in the real world. Of the exhibition, Senior Curator Bob Durden stated, “We have a unique opportunity to offer works of notable European artists alongside works of a similar nature from our own collection. The exhibition includes mature content—primarily nudes, figures in the landscape, and a rarely seen Troy Dalton painting from the museum’s collection. Strawberry Festival The 25th Annual Strawberry Festival is Saturday, June 11th from 7:30am-4pm. This community event takes place under Skypoint and starts with a public pancake breakfast, includes a Kid’s Area, and includes Arts & Crafts booths, food trucks, live entertainment, and a 65’ strawberry shortcake prepared by the Chefs & Cooks of Montana. The Strawberry Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Billings Heights Lions Club kicks off the event at 7:30am. The Kid’s Area sponsored by the Center for Children and Families, Wise Wonders Children’s Museum, and the YMCA will have free activities for children including face painting, crafts, and Zumba. All children must accompanied by an adult. The Strawberry Festival’s Arts & Crafts vendors come from around the region to showcase a collection of creations including photography, oil paintings, jewelry, textiles, woodwork, sculptures, glass, ceramics, garden art, and more. The festival will also have booths from local non-profit and commercial organizations, as well

as, food vendors specializing in Asian, Mexican, BBQ, Italian, and Greek cuisines. In total, the festival hosts over 150 booths. Always a crowd favorite, the Chefs and Cooks Association of Montana will once again assemble the 65ft Strawberry Shortcake. This year, the shortcake will be set-up in a new location on 2nd Ave. between N. 27th and Broadway, just east of Skypoint, and serving will begin around the noon hour. The cake serves approximately 1,500 people and costs $2.00 a slice. Proceeds from the shortcake go to the Chefs and Cooks of Montana’s scholarship program and toward downtown street beautification projects. Pompeys Pillar Visitor Center open for the season Pompeys Pillar National Monument is excited to announce that it is open for the summer. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven daysv a week. The main entrance gate will also be open during these hours of operation. Walk-ins are always welcome every day from dawn to dusk. Daily fees are $7 per vehicle. Interagency passes are honored and can be purchased at the fee station.

In 1806, Captain William Clark camped at the Clarks Fork Ditch Yellowstone mouth of the Clark’s Fork River where it joins the Yel- River S. Park City Rd. lowstone River. This site eventually became known as Reiter Dr. Laurel. Dug-out canoes were made for their trip on the Yellowstone River at a site near Park City ( 7 miles west of Laurel). You can retrace the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition through Montana — the state with more distance than any other state that was traveled through during the expedition. Pompey’s Pillar Rock

From Billings: 30 min. One of America’s most famous sandstone buttes. It bears the only remaining physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, appearing on the trail today as it did 200 years ago. On the face of the 150-foot butte, Captain William Clark carved his name on July 25, 1806, during his return to the United States through the Yellowstone Valley. The Pillar overlooks the Yellowstone River about 25 miles east of Billings, Montana. The area is easily accessible from Interstate 94, using exit 23, or from State Highway 312. The Pillar is a sandstone butte or mesa covering about 2 acres at its base and standing about 150 feet high. Because it is the only sandstone outcrop on the south side of the Yellowstone River for several miles in either direction, it has been a landmark for centuries with spectacular views of the canyon and the Bighorn River below.

Cooney Reservoir

From Billings: 60 min. This reservoir is a popular recreation area serving south-central Montana offering boating, swimming, camping and fishing. Attractions include good walleye and rainbow trout fishing. Boating opportunities are abundant. 72 campsites are available, 11 of which have electrical hookups on this 309 acre site at 4,252 feet in elevation.

Lake Elmo State Park

From Billings: 0 min. This 64-acre reservoir is a popular swimming, nonmotorized boating, and fishing area. The park is 123 acres in size at an elevation of 3,199 feet. The site offers flush and vault toilets, disabled fishing pier, showers, change rooms, picnic tables, trash cans, drinking water and a 1.4 mile hiking/ nature trail.

Tongue River Reservoir

From Billings: 120 min. Tongue River provides a 12-mile long reservoir set in the scenic red shale and juniper canyons and open prairies of southeastern Montana. Boating and other water sports are popular here and the park boasts excellent bass, crappie, walleye and northern pike fishing.

The height of Montana summer – early August – a serene Flathead Lake framed by cedar, ponderosa and spruce confronts me. It is 6 p.m., the sun is still high in its arc but low enough on the western horizon to fade and blend the low-slung ridges and tops of the Salish Mountains, rising from the lake’s western shore 13 miles or more in the distance. The dark, seemingly featureless massifs become progressively lighter the farther west they extend. A smoke haze from forest fires adds to the silhouetting created by the sun and distance. Silence has taken over. The water is still. The mechanized watercrafts have been put to bed. Nothing is left to disturb the peace and vision. The human intrusion is vanquished by the expanse of water stretching to the sunset side. A setting is in place to picture the lake’s and northwest Montana’s yesterday. Looking south toward the foot of the lake, my imagination takes me back to March 1812, when explorer and fur trader David Thompson crested a hill to become the first known white man to stand in awe before the sparkling Flathead Lake. “In 1880, Nate Leavengood’s meadow, where Anaconda now stands, was a lush and quiet place. As far as the eye could see in all directions there was nothing but the valley, the swelling foothills and mountain ramparts. “Four years later, the meadow was gone, blighted by arsenic fumes from the largest copper smelter in the world. There had been no gradual encroachment of civilization, no creeping in of small farms and little stores. There was no village. First there was nothing, and then all of a sudden there was the world’s largest smelter and around it

a raw new city.” Recognizing and appreciating Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery’s time in Montana is essential. When Lewis penned his journals on the night of April 27, 1805, in essence he was recording the first written history of Montana. Big Sky Country was uncharted and cloaked in ambiguity. These explorers mapped the land and noted all they witnessed, thereby hoisting the veil. Their account was one of not only biological wonders and magnificent country, but also of wealth. Again K. Ross Toole explains, “Although they left only the ashes of their campfires behind, Montana would never be the same again.” After studying the words of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, it is essential to learn of the fur trade. The trappers or “mountain men” as they were often referred to, took over where Clark, the topographer, left off. Their wanderings to almost every quarter of Montana provided more detailed mapping – small compensation for what they took in return. Their mark on our terrain was one of exploitation, setting a pattern that continues to this day. In addition, they had a profound and disastrous effect on the Indians. The ensuing steamboat era lasted from 1859 through 1888. It started when high waters of the early summer of 1860 brought the steamboat Chippewa to Fort Benton, providing accessibility to the soon-to-be Montana Territory. And the chronology of our underpinnings marches on – the mining, the railroad, the so-called Indian Wars and the homestead era, to name a few. To know these happenings is to better appreciate the terrain of the present.

Western Heritage Center tells the stories of Montana Housed in the historic Parmly Billings Memorial Library building, the Western Heritage Center (WHC) strives to bring a deeper understanding of the region by collecting, preserving and telling the stories of the people and places of the Yellowstone River Valley and the northern High Plains region. Incorporated in 1971, the Western Heritage Center began as a community center to display a private collection of western artifacts. Over the years, it has grown to include nationally recognized education and outreach programs, long term exhibits with interactive components, traveling exhibits, a vast collection of historic artifacts, fine art, textiles, photographs and memorabilia and climate controlled archival storage. As an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the WHC

adheres to national exhibit and archival standards. Geographically, the WHC serves an area defined by the 72,000 square miles of the Yellowstone River watershed, which includes much of eastern Montana, northern Wyoming, and the western reaches of North Dakota. “We do this by implementing

comprehensive arts and humanities projects, programs and exhibits based on broad regional interest and need,” said Executive Director Julie Dial. “The strength of the Western Heritage Center lies in its ability to reach out to local, state and national partners throughout the region it serves. DOWNTOWN – The Moss Mansion Historic House Museum, located in Billings on 914 Division St., is a red-stoned mansion built in 1903 by Preston B. Moss, who moved to Billings from Paris, MO. It was inhabited solely by Mr. and Mrs. Moss, their six children, and three servants until 1984. The house was built for a cost of $105,000, when most homes averaged about $3,000. It has 28 rooms, and is 60 feet square. It rises 45 feet above the surrounding gardens. The home became an historic house museum shortly after the last family member passed away in 1984. The house was well preserved by the family with very few alterations. For this reason, the home is filled with most of the original contents and design features: interior curtains, wall coverings, furniture, light fixtures, carpets and color. The originality of the artifacts makes the Moss Mansion a unique community treasure. The Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Seasonal exhibits are

also featured. The Moss Mansion was designed by the famous New York Architect Henry Hardenbergh, who also designed the original WaldorfAstoria, Plaza Hotel, The Dakota, Williard Hotel, and Copely Hotel. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday with tours on the hour starting with the first tour at 10 a.m. and the

last tour at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the museum is open 1-4 p.m. with tours on the hour starting with the first tour at 1 p.m. and the last tour at 3 p.m. The museum is closed Monday. Admission is adults $10, seniors (age 65+) and military $7, ages 6-17 $6, and children age 5 and younger admitted free. To reach the Moss Mansion Historic Museum Home, take

Because of its outreach and these collaborations, the Western Heritage Center is considered a leader in community dialogue.” The Western Heritage Center is one of six Montana museums accredited by the American Association of Museums. In 2001, the Western Heritage Center received the Montana Governor’s Humanities Award. It is the second organization to receive this honor, which is usually given to individuals. Many avid hikers say that East Rosebud is the most scenic valley of all. It is filled with lakes and waterfalls. Slough Lake is found within the East Rosebud valley and is not only beautiful, but great for fishing as it fills from Slough Creek which connects all the way to Yellowstone National Park. Two unique ranges

Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness was created from existing National Forest lands in 1978. The wilderness is partly in Gallatin, Custer and Shoshone National Forests and is composed of 944,000 acres (3,820 km2). The wilderness encompasses two distinct mountain ranges, namely the Beartooth and Absaroka ranges. These ranges are completely distinct geologically speaking with the Absarokas composed primarily of volcanic (or extrusive) and metamorphic rock, while the Beartooths are made up almost entirely of granitic rocks.

Hosted by the Real Bird Family, the 26th Annual Battle of the Little Bighorn Re-enactment is held on the 140th Anniversary (25 June) of “Custer’s Last Stand. Learn and experience the historic struggle for control of the West by visiting the amazing Little Bighorn Re-enactment firsthand - where the Sioux Nation was encamped. The Reenactment is located just south of Crow Agency, MT and between the historic points of Custer’s Last Stand Hill, Reno’s Charge / Retreat, and Reno Benteen Battlefield. Legends of the Little Bighorn live in Hardin

Big Horn County, Yellowtail Lake Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. General Custer meets his demise here every year. Civilized fun and comforts include a pioneer museum, an art gallery, trading posts, a variety of interesting shops, a kiddie playground, an indoor swimming pool and exercise rooms, and a golf course. All the Comforts Accommodations: Motels, campgrounds, and restaurants will keep you comfortable while you explore the Little Bighorn Battlefield and Custer National Cemetery, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Yellowtail Dam, and the Bighorn River. Chamber of Commerce Hospitality: Besides being the home of Little Big Horn Days, Hardin has other events from rodeos and parades to street dances, art and craft shows, to quilt shows. Hardin, a cattle man from Wyoming who leased tracts of land on the Crow Reservation to range his cattle. Local industry now includes farming and ranching, surface coal mining, fishing and recreational opportunities.

You’ll see sugar beets, corn, wheat, and barley in the fields. The raising of beef cattle, sheep, hogs, and quarter horses is part of the livestock economic picture. Just east of Hardin, where the Little Bighorn River joins the Bighorn, is the island site where the Far West sternwheeler boat anchored on June 27, 1876, to evacuate the wounded from the Reno and Benteen battles. It was the Far West that carried survivors with the story of Custer’s defeat to the rest of the world. Museum and Visitor Center Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of

early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment. Historic District Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. Located near Crow Agency, on Highway 212 (I-90 Exit 510), Little Bighorn Battlefield is just 15 miles east of Hardin. Crow Agency Apsaalooke The Crow Reservation is where culture and tradition are a way of life, perpetuated from generation to generation. Experience the culture of the Apsaalooke, “Children of the LargeBeaked Bird,” the Crow People. Big Horn County Big Horn County is a land made up of varying jurisdic-

tions. As you drive across the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Nations, be aware that each has its own unique regulations and law enforcement agencies. The National Park Service maintains jurisdiction at Little Bighorn Battlefield and the Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape. Visitors may want to enjoy fishing the Big Horn, Little Big Horn, and Tongue Rivers which wind through this region. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports including boating, water skiing and more. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, at Pryor, contains much history of the Crow Indians. Among the primary attractions within Big Horn County is the Little Bighorn Battlefield, site of the defeat of Lt. Colonel George Custer and the 7th Calvary by a combined force of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors in 1876. Annual reenactments of the battle occur each June . In August, Crow Agency, capital of the Crow Nation, hosts Crow Fair when the landscape is transformed by the addition of over 1,000 pitched teepees and thousands of people gathering for traditional dances, drumming and other events. Big Horn County is rich in culture and time-honored traditions.

Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial. Lame Deer Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is

held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv. Ashland Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. St. Labre Founded in 1884 to serve the Northern Cheyenne Indians, St. Labre is located in the beautiful and historic Tongue River Valley, bounded by the Tongue River and the scenic Custer National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days. In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Chey-

ennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the

site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides preschool to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepeestyle church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.

THE CROW AND NORTHERN CHEYENNE THE CROW

About 75 percent of the Crow tribe’s approximately 10,000 or more enrolled members live on or near the reservation. Eighty-five percent speak Crow as their first language. This tribe was called “Apsaalooke,” which means “children of the largebeaked bird.” White men later misinterpreted the word as “crow.” Chief Plenty Coups was the last chief to gain that status in the traditional Crow manner. He lived until 1932, leaving his land and home as a park for all people. The Crow Reservation is in southcentral Montana, bordered by Wyoming on the south, with its northwestern boundary about 10 miles from Billings. For many years the vast coal deposits under the eastern portion of the reservation remained untapped. One mine is now in operation and providing royalty income and employment to tribal members. The Crow operate only a small portion of their irrigated or dry farm acreage and about 30 percent of their grazing land. They maintain a buffalo herd of 300 head.

Attractions include The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area features spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing, boating, fishing and camping. There are two visitor centers, one at Fort Smith and one at Yellowtail Dam. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument/Reno-Benteen Battlefield commemorating the Sioux/Cheyenne victory over the Seventh Cavalry. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument features museum exhibits, an interpretive center and ranger-led programs. Chief Plenty Coups State Park, home and grave site of the well-known Crow chief, Plenty Coups. There is a display of Crow artifacts and history, and a scenic picnic area. Crow Agency becomes the ‘tepee capital of the world’ in mid-August during the annual Crow Fair celebration. Approximately 5,000 Northern Cheyenne, along with members of other tribes and with non-Native Americans, live on the reservation. Lame Deer is the tribal and government agency headquarters. There are four other districts that comprise the whole reservation. The rugged country of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation is in southeastern Montana. It covers 445,000 acres and is bounded on the east by the Tongue River and on the west by the Crow Reservation. Major employers include the St. Labre Indian School, the federal government, tribal government, power companies and construction companies. The education system,

farming, ranching and small businesses contribute to the economy. A historical buffalo jump, burial sites of Indian chiefs, Custer’s last camp before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Cheyenne Indian Museum and Gift Store, St. Labre Indian School and the Ashland Pow Wow are of special interest in the Ashland area. Lame Deer is tribal headquarters and home of the Northern Cheyenne Powwow. Some features are the Northern Cheyenne Arts and Crafts Center, Charging Horse Casino and Cafe, Chief Dull Knife College Cultural Center and Lame Deer Museum. Custer’s Last Stand and the Little Bighorn Real Bird Family stages Little Bighorn re-enactment Twenty-six years ago, the Real Bird family wanted to share more of Native Americans’ history and showcase the land where Sitting Bull’s camp was located when it became forever memorialized in the history books through the Indian Wars. History comes alive again June 24-26, each afternoon at 1 p.m. Held on the banks of the Little Bighorn River where Sitting Bull’s Camp was between Crow Agency and Garryowen, Montana, the Real Bird Re-enactment of the 140th Anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, also known as Custer’s Last Stand or Battle of the Greasy Grass, allows audiences to experience firsthand the historic struggle for control of the West where the Sioux Nation was encamped. Witness Brevet Major General Armstrong Custer, played by Steve Alexander, and the Seventh US Cavalry Troopers come out of the Medicine Tail Coulee and clash with authentic Indian braves as they cross the Little Bighorn River to recreate that infamous day of June 25, 1876. First time ever done, we will have an open public horse ride with the Cavalry of the Custer’s Trail on Saturday 9:30 a.m. to noon before the show! We have room for up to 100 extra riders for the Custer’s Trail Ride. Witness Bvt. Major General Armstrong Custer, played by Steve Alexander (recognized by Congress to be today’s foremost Custer Historian), and the 7th US Cavalry Troopers come out of the Medicine Tail Coulee and clash with authentic Indian Braves as they both cross the Little Bighorn River, showcasing their great riding ability, to recreate that famous day of June 25th, 1876. This re-enactment briefly reviews the history of the interaction of the Whites and the Native Americans in the West, Native American culture and horsemanship, and the major battles of the Northern Tribes. Experience with all your senses this epic battle of 600 7th US Cavalry and over 1,800 Warriors of

Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe Indian Nations. The Battle of the Little Bighorn re-enactment was started to share more of the Native American story of the Indian Wars and to have the re-enactment on the ground where the teepees of the Indian Village were located, between Custer’s Last Stand Hill and Reno-Benteen Battlefield. The Real Bird re-enactment is located just south of Crow Agency, between the historic points of Custer’s Last Stand Hill, Reno’s Charge/Retreat, and the Reno-Benteen Battlefield. Held at Medicine Tail Coulee and Minneconjou Ford, this is where Custer’s Battalion was closest to the village and where E and F Troops were sent to attack the Indian village. From Billings, travel south on Interstate 90 until you reach Crow Agency. Exit at the Little Bighorn Memorial Exit. Turn east (left) and cross over the interstate. Turn right onto the frontage road and travel 2 miles. Then turn left on to Real Bird Loop. Follow signs to the far side of the loop to the re-enactment. Arrive 20-30 minutes early. Bleacher seating is on a first come, first seated basis. Feel free to interact with re-enactors and tour the vendor tents, Indian tepees, and (with permission) the cavalry camps. Weather could be sunny and hot or windy and rainy so bring sunscreen, hat, and a light coat. Photography is encouraged. Some troopers have been training as students here all week on horsemanship, history, weapons and more; camped in Wall tents on the banks of the Little Bighorn and living as troopers of the 1870s while attending the Custer’s Last Ride 8 day adventure by the US Cavalry School. The Real Bird re-enactment lasts about 90 minutes. Cost is $20 for adults, $10 for kids 8 to 14 , and free to kids 7 and under. For quick processing at the entrance, exact change is appreciated. CPT. Fetterman, a Civil War Veteran, stationed at Fort Phil Kearney (18 miles south of present day Sheridan, WY) had said that with 80 men he could ride straight through the heart of Sioux Country. Fetterman lead a relief force of 81 men of the 2nd Cavalry, 18th Infantry, and two civilians. One of the Braves that performed this stunt was a man named, Crazy Horse. The Government abandoned the Forts along the Bozeman trail, and the tribes were free of intrusion of whites for a time. The discovery of Gold in the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory changed the course of history for the region. There had been rumors for a time, in 1874 the Government commissioned an expedition into the Black Hills to confirm the stories. It was lead by Bvt. Major General Custer of the 7th Cavarly; he took almost a thousand men on his march through the heart of Souix Territory. Gold was discovered, and soon the secret was out. The land was owned by the Sioux as per the Laramie Treaty, so the US Government was required to charge the Military and mainly the Cavalry with keeping the white man from plundering their sacred Black hills. This proved to be impossible for a small force to secure an area of thousands of square miles. After conflicts arose with the flood of treasure hunters, the civilian population pressured the government to control the threat. Hence, an order from the Commissioner of Indian Affairs went out in December of 1875, that all Indians must return to their reservations by January of 1876 or be deemed hostiles to the US Government. Runners were sent out from the reservations, those that received the message laughed at the craziness of the demand. Even if they wanted to they could never return in the dead of winter. The War Department had planned for a winter campaign, as had been successful in previous conflicts with the Plains tribes. Due to heavy snow fall, COL. Gibbons 2nd Cavalry from Ft Ellis, MT (Bozeman) and Gen. Terry/Bvt. Gen. Custer’s command from Ft. Abraham Lincoln,

Dakota Territory could not take to the field till spring. General Crook’s force did take to the field under Col. J.J. Reynolds and engaged a Cheyenne village in March of 1876. But victory slipped from this commander, and General Crook’s men were forced to return to Fort Fetterman. General Sherman then planned to have a three prong attack on the Sioux. This provided all the nations of the Sioux and their allies that the US Government was serious and the military were going to attack if they found them off the reservation. On June 25, 1876, General Custer and more than 600 of his 7th Cavalry Troopers fought 2-3,000 warriors on the Banks of the Little Bighorn. They had been in the saddle for over 5 weeks since living Ft Abraham Lincoln on May 17, 1876. General Custer was called to atop the ridge at the Crow’s Nest at mid morning to see what his chief of scouts, Lt. Varnum and his scouts had seen of a signs of a big Village that morning. After weeks on the trail and dust and the rising temperature of the day, General Custer could not see of what he was been told of a large village that is nearly 20 miles in the distance. He breaks his command into three Battalions. Then further separates his first two from the third Battalion commanded by Cpt. Benteen, who he sends to the Southwest and clearly away from the Village. CPT. Benteen and General Custer have been at odds for quite some time. Custer attacks! Reno to the south end of the village, while Custer skirts the cliffs moving north. His men fight a running battle from the middle of the village at Minniconjou Ford to Last Stand Hill and all are wiped out, Reno who he promised help barely escapes with half his men from his attack on the southern end of the village. He is supported and saved by the return of Benteen. The braves are led by warriors of great courage - such as Crazy Horse, Gall, Sitting Bull and others carry the day. They hold Benteen and Reno for two days as the village escapes before Col. Gibbon and Gen Terry arrive from the north.

United States Air Force Academy Concert Band performs FREE patriotic concert at ABT on June 28 BILLINGS, MT —Alberta Bair Theater hosts the United States Air Force Academy Concert Band on Tuesday, June 28 with a FREE performance beginning at 7 p.m. “As part of our week-long tour through Montana,” said Staff Sergeant Adam Porter, “the performance features a diverse repertoire celebrating our Nation’s Independence Day and the patriotic spirit of its people.” The United States Air Force Academy Concert Band proudly represents the Air Force Academy, the leading institution for educating, training, and inspiring men and women to become officers of character. The Concert Band is composed of 50 active-duty Air Force professionals and is one of nine Academy Band ensembles. In addition to performing for Air Force troop morale, recruiting, and community outreach events, the group often appears on radio and television broadcasts and presents educational performances and clinics at national music conferences. For over 60 years, the Academy Band has used the power of music to honor our nation’s heroes, inspire Air Force personnel and the nation they serve, produce innovative musical programs and products, and communicate Air Force excellence to millions around the world. Interpretive center, trails reveal Pictograph State Park A new, sandstone-hued interpretive center rises at the foot of rimrocks where Pictograph Cave has drawn human beings for over 3,000 years. Designed for high energy efficiency, the center features a classroom, restrooms, gift shop and indoor exhibits with replicas of artifacts — such as a wooden paint applicator and a bone turtle effigy — found during a Works Progress Administration excavation. A short 5-mile drive from

Billings, the park is an ideal spot to enjoy a shady picnic, add to your birding life list, attend an interpretive program, or just take a stroll in the quiet outdoors. The Pictograph, Middle and Ghost cave complex was home to generations of prehistoric hunters. With its abundant wildlife and vegetation, the fertile river valley provided an ideal campsite for travelers. These caves were the site of Montana’s first professional

archaeological studies and excavations beginning in 1937. Over 30,000 artifacts have been identified from the park. A short paved trail allows visitors to view the rock paintings, known as pictographs, that are still visible in Pictograph Cave, the largest of the three. Interpretive signs tell the story of the archaeological studies. In Billings, take Lockwood Exit off I-90, then 5 miles south on Coburn Road. Leashes are required for pets. The maxi-

mum combined length of a vehicle unit is 40 feet. In April and May, the park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The visitor center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to Pictograph Cave State Park is free for Montana residents, but park fees apply to non-residents. The Charles M. Bair Family Museum opened May 27 with two new exhibitions This summer, the Charles M. Bair Family Museum is proud to present the exhibition titled “Light on Glass: Edward Curtis Photogravures of the Apsáalooke” Edward Sheriff Curtis published The North American Indian between 1907 and 1930 with the intent to record traditional Indian cultures. The work comprises twenty volumes of narrative text and photogravure images. Each volume is accompanied by a portfolio of large photogravure plates. The Bair Museum Collection consists of over 180 photogravures from Volumes 1 through 5 and the accompanying portfolios. In addition to the Curtis Exhibit the Museum has a new exhibit In the Special Projects Gallery: “Walk in Beauty: Navajo Rugs from the Bair Family Collection” from May 27 – June 26, 2016. The Bair Collection of

early twentieth-century Navajo weavings offers a snapshot of rug collection by a prominent Montana family at a time when Navajo weaving was undergoing a critical period of change referred to as the Transitional Period. The Bair Museum features Western art and culture in a state-of-the-art complex. Located in Martinsdale, the museum features several galleries for visitors to browse and a gift shop that sells books by Montana authors, baskets, jewelry, and pottery. The state-of-the art 7,300 square foot museum houses the Bair’s collection of valuable western artworks by Edward Sharp and Charles Russell, priceless Indian artifacts, and an eclectic collection of American and European paintings. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, the Charles M. Bair Family Museum will be open seven days a

Delight the senses in ZooMontana’s Botanical Gardens WEST END — Next time you are planning a “Walk on the Wild Side” at ZooMontana, consider a “Walk on the Blooming Side” to complete your visit! Nestled in the heart of ZooMontana, in a clearing amid the trees, is the Sensory Garden, home to a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names. Ornamentals, culinary, and species native to Montana delight the senses — from the familiar lavender lobes of bearded iris, to succulent wild strawberries, to the downy texture of Stachys byzantina, commonly known as Lamb’s Ear.

Dottie’s Garden, a memorial garden in honor of Dottie Barnett, is an excellent example of successful Montana xeri-

scaping. A vegetable garden growing near the barn was planted by Zoo Preschool this spring. And the Children’s

Garden, populated by large ceramic animals and located across from the main entrance to the grounds, has recently undergone a revitalization. The gardens, scattered throughout the zoo, are managed by The Botanical Society at ZooMontana volunteers. ZooMontana and Botanical Garden is located at 2100 South Shiloh Road. Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New in 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, Montana. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were

trailed into the Yellowstone River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular

view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is now open

Little Bighorn Battlefield is 15 miles east of Hardin. Picture, if you can, June 25, 1876, the day when over 210 troopers of the 7th Cavalry fell in battle. The thunder of hooves, war cries of the Teton Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indians, rifle fire and death chants softly echo across the plain. This was...Custer’s Last Stand. June 25, 2015 will mark the 139th anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Visitor Center displays exhibits on the battle, Indian culture, and frontier soldiers. New interpretive exhibits include “People of the Plains,” a story of the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho people at the time of the battle in 1876. Full-size photographic cut-outs and artifacts from the battlefield collection interpret the many roles that tribal members played, including the warrior’s dual role as hunter and warrior. “Tools of the Battle” describes the vast assortment of weapons used in the battle by the 7th Cavalry and the Native American warriors. “Unraveling the Mystery” is an exhibit of the important archaeological surveys conducted on the battlefield and how the recovered artifacts provide an understanding of what may have happened during the battle. Firearms analysis and forensic pathology have revealed not only individual weapon types and details of movements during the battle, but also important clues about the various equipment used by both sides. The Memorial is open Memorial Day through Labor Day 8 a.m.-8 p.m., after Labor Day through September 8 a.m.-6 p.m., OctoberMarch 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and April through Memorial Day 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Daily ranger talks and movies are provided. Hiking is permitted on a 3/4 mile interpretation trail, selfguided with brochures. There is also a self-guiding booklet for the cemetery. The battlefield is located 61 miles south of Billings, Montana, and 65 miles north of Sheridan, Wyoming, at the junction of Interstate 90, and Montana Highway 212, I-90 Exit 510. Little Bighorn offers a wide range of interpretive opportunities. Self-guided walking tours are available for the battle-related sites and the national cemetery.

Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer

A self-guiding, 5-mile tour road enables visitors to follow and observe the sites related to the battle. Three walking trails have been established: Reno-Benteen Defense site, 5 miles south of the Custer field; Keogh/Crazy Horse position on battle ridge; and along Deep Ravine, west of battle ridge. Custer National Cemetery contains burials that are historic to northern plains events as well as burial of veterans and dependents from 1879-present. White Swan Memorial Library contains the finest collection of research materials available on the battle of the Little Bighorn, as well as other related historical events. A Powwow is held in conjunction with the fair and rodeo. The authentic Indian event features colorful costumes made with feathers, rawhide, and millions of beads. Parades, dancing contests, racing events and pari-mutuel betting are featured daily. Visitors are always welcome.

Crow Agency has a hospital designed with unique Indian architecture. The Crow tribe has its own government. The Crow Reservation, covering about 2,500,000 acres in Big Horn County, encompasses Lodge Grass, St. Xavier, Crow Agency, Pryor and Fort Smith. Rosebud Battle was a foreshadowing to the Battle of the Little Bighorn Rosebud Battle The Battle of the Rosebud symbolizes the Indians’ first stiff resistance in the Sioux War of 1876. Its outcome had an impact on Lt. Col. George A. Custer’s devastating defeat on the Little Bighorn only a week later. The June 17, 1876, battle between the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians and General George Crook’s cavalry and infantry was

one of the largest Indian battles ever waged in the United States. It set the stage for the Indian victory eight days later when Lt. Col. George A. Custer and his immediate command were wiped out on the Little Bighorn. A selfguided tour with interpretive signs is managed by Montana State Parks. (25 miles east of Crow Agency on U.S. 212, then 20 miles south on Secondary 314, then 1.5 miles west on county road; 3,052 acres; 4,300’ el. 406-232-0900.) In June 2010, the site was designated as a National Historic Landmark. There is no charge for entrance. Camping is not allowed.
