YAM hosts information session for artists about copyright law and intellectual property The Yellowstone Art Museum will host an informative session on the essentials of protecting copyright and intellectual property rights. The session is designed for artists, writers, and other creative professionals, but all are welcome. “Know Your Rights: Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights for Artists” will be presented by attorneys Bob Griffin, Shalise Zobel, and Isaac Potter from Crowley Fleck PLLP and Billings attorney Jennifer L. Webber of WEBBERpllc. Digital technologies have made it easier than ever before for forgers and plagiarists to

steal creative work. It is also important for artists who use other artists’ work in their own to know the limitations and definitions. Learn what you need to know at this important session. The presentation and Q&A will take place in the YAM’s Murdock Gallery on Thursday, April 20, 2017, beginning at 6:30 p.m. It is sponsored by the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of Montana. The program is free of charge and will include free admission to the YAM’s galleries beginning at 6:00 p.m.

NOVA Center for the Performing Arts announces 2017-2018 Season!

Auditions for teen summer musical

NOVA Center for the Performing Arts’ artistic committee and managing producer Dodie Rife have announced its 201718 season! NOVA has picked productions that will fit this year’s theme of, “Around the World!” The season will have 10 productions including 4 mainstage theater productions (Mouse Trap, Quilters, Celtic Christmas, and The Complete History of America (Abridged)), 4 youth shows (Madeline, Brundibar, Gulliver’s Travels, and School House Rock), and 2 operas ( Festival of One-Act Operas, and Pirates of Penzance), NOVA’s youth conservatory first travels to Germany in October 2017 with Brundibár, the youth opera about children banding together to save their sick mother. In January, audiences will travel to fantastic places such as Lilliput and Laguda with Gulliver’s Travels. NOVA will leave the land of fantasy to visit Paris with Madeline in April. Finally, the youth conservatory will end the season with Schoolhouse Rock in July. NOVA’s mainstage productions begin in America with a production of The Complete History of America (Abridged) in September. These very talented actors of the Reduced Shakespeare Company tackle such controversial questions as: Who really discovered America? Why did Abe Lincoln free the slaves? How many Democrats does it take to screw in a lightbulb? History is normally written by the winners… now it’s the Reduced Shakespeare Company’s turn. Then NOVA audience members take a trip across the pond with Agatha Christie’s “whodunnit” Mousetrap in November followed by the world premiere of Celtic Christmas in December. NOVA will return back to the States in February with the Rankin File Production of The Quilters. NOVA Center for the Performing Arts musical and opera schedule will include The Festival of One-Act Operas (Bon Appetit, The Telephone, and The Lantern Marriage) in October, and the mainstage production of Pirates of Penzance in March. The NOVA Center for the Performing Arts season will also include fundraisers: Reds, White, & Brews (September 7), Auction of Arias (October 22), Love of the heArts (February 17), and Opera Fest (March 17). NOVA Center for the Performing Arts box office hours are Tuesday through Friday 12-6. If you are interested in volunteering this season, please contact NOVA’s box office at 406.591.9535.

NOVA Center for the Performing Arts will hold auditions for the 2017 teen-summer musical, School of Rock: The Musical, on April 30 & May 1 at 6 P.M. Please wear clothes you are comfortable moving in and prepare a contemporary musical theater piece appropriate for the show. Audition pieces should be between 16-32 measures. An accompanist will be provided. Playing an instrument is required when auditioning for a lead; feel free to bring your own instruments but we will also have instruments if needed. Those doing an instrument audition need to prepare 32 measures of a Broadway-rock, musical number. Actors are needed to play the following instruments: bass guitar, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, drums, and keyboard. Orchestra musicians are needed for the following instruments: bass guitar, second keyboard, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and drums. Auditioners must be going into 7th grade in 2017-18 school year and no older than a recent graduate from high school.

divide between the past and future acoustic music. The quartet released their third studio album ‘Blue Ruin’ on July 9th which has received positive praise. The album has charted in the CMJ Top 200 and the band was featured by CMont. – Edge mentioning – ‘Head for the Hills’ Blue Ruin effortlessly matches integrity against innovation’. Renowned artist Timothy Doyle (Muse, The Black Keys, Lucas Films, NASA) created the stunning cover art for ‘Blue Ruin.’ Whether playing in sweat-soaked clubs or at beautiful mountain festivals, the five-piece has shown a tenacity for quick-picking and all the right polish without sacrificing the raw feeling of well-executed bluegrass. Keeping an eye on traditions of the past but boldly forging into new territory, Trout Steak Revival takes us back to memories of whiskey, laughter, and the misty high country where the band was born. With Danielle Egnew. You are born with specific gifts for a reason – it’s time to embrace those gifts! With so much energetic change during this ascension, people are recognizing that their “careers” may not be a “fit” for their own personal design. What happens when we realize the career we’ve dedicated 10, 20, or even 30 years toward – is no longer emotionally or socially fulfilling? Perhaps it never has been, yet we’ve needed something to “pay the bills”. Barton’s Books, 223 N. 29th St. Billings (406) 252-4398

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and calling Colorado home, Gregory Alan Isakov has been traveling all his life. Songs that hone a masterful quality tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place. His song-craft lends to deep lyrical masterpieces, with hints of his influences, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen. He has been described as “strong, subtle, a lyrical genius.” Isakov’s most recent album is a collaboration with the Colorado Symphony. Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future.

Landmarks Gallery

This gallery space is updated annually and currently features the exhibit “A Rip-Roaring Good Time: Sin in the Magic City.” Using historic photos and objects, it explores the rowdy early days of Billings with stories of gambling, alcohol, theft, vigilantism, and more. The museum’s patio affords a spectacular view of Billings and the Yellowstone Valley. (It can be rented for private events!)The expansive grounds surrounding the museum are a perfect place to rest on a sunny day. Old Engine 1031 and the Range Rider of the West statue are a short walk from the museum. The museum gift shop is well stocked with a variety of gifts and souvenirs. An array of books covers many Yellowstone Valley topics. Don’t miss our unique two-headed calf plush toy - it’s a replica of the real deal in the museum and there’s nothing else like it! The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The Armed Man & a Mass for Peace The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale (BSO&C) closes the 66th season with A Mass for Peace, Saturday, April 22nd at the Alberta Bair Theater. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Concert Cues with Tom Singer, an interactive pre-concert talk, begins at 6:45 p.m. The Armed Man, A Mass for Peace by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins was commissioned by the Royal Armories Museum as part of the Millennium celebrations to mark the move of the Museum from London to Leeds, in 1999. The contemporary piece is a combination of religious hymns, psalms and text used to create a musical representation of war-torn Kosovo. Excerpts from the Catholic Mass, the 15th Century folk song L’hommé, Armé, the Islamic Call to Prayer, plus works from writers Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tenneyson and Hiroshima bombing survivor, Sankichi Toge, shows that “sorrow, pain and death can be overcome.” (Wilson, Guy. "Programme Note to The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace". Boosey & Hawkes website) Since its release, The Armed Man, a Mass for Peace has become a fixture on classical music stations. July 3, 2016 marked its 2,000th performance since 2001 (boosey.com.) The BSO&C welcomes special guest Kimberly Gratland James, mezzo-soprano. Gratland James is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Montana. She has performed with the London Sinfonietta, the New World Symphony, the Los Angeles Symphony and numerous operas throughout the country. The Armed Man, A Mass for Peace is sponsored by John H. & Carol L. H. Green. The 2016-2017 Host Hotel is The Northern Hotel. The 2016-2017 season is proudly sponsored by The Oakland Companies. 11:11 Presents Shook Twins

April 22 at the Pubstation. Born and raised in Sandpoint Idaho, Shook Twins are an Indie folk-pop band hailing from Portland, Oregon. Identical twins, Katelyn and Laurie are the main songwriters, but they also back up their band member Niko Slice (electric guitar, mandolin and vocals) adding his uniquely compelling songs to the mix. Barra Brown is on Drums, vocals and Drum Pad, and Josh Simon is on Bass, vocals, Electric guitar, and synth. Central to Shook Twins’ sound is their wide range of instrumentation: banjo, acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass, mandolin, electronic drums, face drum (beat-box), glockenspiel, ukulele, banjohead drumming and their signature Golden Egg. Beautiful twin harmonies, layered upon acoustic and electric instrumentation, coupled with Laurie’s inventive use of percussive and ambient vocal loops, and Katelyn’s re-purposed telephone microphone, set their sound apart, creating a unique and eccentric blend of folk, roots, groove and soul. Shook Twins have shared the stage with artists including: Ryan Adams, Gregory Alan Isakov, Greensky Bluegrass, Mason Jennings, Blitzen Trapper, Railroad Earth, Keller Williams, David Grisman, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Sarah Jarosz, Laura Veirs, The Fruit Bats, Jonathan Brooke, JJ Grey and MoFro, The Indigo Girls, Crooked Still, Jason Webley, The BoDeans, Elephant Revival and more. Spanning the spectrum from distinctive and genuine to amusing and whimsical, Shook Twins’ laid-back and fun stage presence draws the listener in, allowing them to take the audience on an adventure. 2016 saw the band opening up for Greensky Bluegrass on a 13 show tour, supporting Keller Williams for several shows in Northern California, and playing Red Rocks Amphitheater with Gregory Alan Isakov and Ani Difranco. The band also embarked on a Spring tour to Europe where they played two festivals in Germany and six shows in the UK. Festivals for this year included WinterWonderGrass Tahoe (CA), Huckleberry Jam (ID), Safety Harbor Fest (FL), Apple Jam Music Festival (OR), Beaverstock (CA), Summer Camp Music Festival (IL), Revival Fest (MN), Northwest String Summit (OR), Fayetteville Roots Festival (AR), Summer Meltdown (WA), Oregon Country Fair (OR), Suwannee Roots Revival (FL) and more! Shook Twins have never been sonically confined to the indie-folk world in which they’ve become well-known artists. Always harnessing an adventurous spirit, Shook Twins are never shy to incorporate beat boxing, banjo-head drumming, vocals using a re-purposed telephone microphone, and other ambient sources within their arrangements. On their latest single, “Call Me Out” (Release Date: August 19, 2016), Shook Twins once again take another leap from the acoustic music scene with a vibey, pop-infused soundscape with a poignant message ready to be embraced by the masses. Lush harmonies, delayed banjo pickin’, deep drums, and multi-layered lead vocals draw the listener in to this intimate breakout summer 2016 single.

Two Bit Franks in concert at Harper & Madison Acoustic Bluegrass/Americana four-piece band will be performing at Harper & Madison on Friday, April 21. John Lowell (guitar & vocals), Tom Murphy (mandolin & vocals), Jeff Shouse (banjo) and special guest Wes Horton (standup bass) present a relaxed set of original, traditional and obscure music that changes each night. The members of the Two Bit Franks have collectively and individually traveled the world playing their music. The band has performed at the Targhee Bluegrass Festival in Alta, Wyoming, the River Roots Festival in Missoula, has been a constant favorite at the Big Grass festival in Big Sky, and numerous shows all over the region. Lowell has toured and taught music extensively throughout the US, UK, Canada and Europe, and Murphy often joins him in Europe as a member of the John Lowell Band. Wes Horton will be sitting in on bass for this special night of music and laughter. Horton is nearing the end of his second contract in Billings with Phillips 66, which makes this night even more special. Having been in the Billings music scene for the last two years, he leaves to return to Nashville in June. “I’ve known these guys for a long time, and I’m excited about playing

with them on the 21st. It’s going to be a great show!,” said Horton. “There’s nothing like playing with a bunch of good musicians who also are your friends,” said Lowell from his home in Livingston. “We always play each song a little bit differently than the last time we played it, and have a great time doing it.” “John is the primary songwriter and singer, but I write instrumental tunes that challenge the band. You never know what these guys are going to do on any one of them,” mandolinist Tom Murphy added. “It keeps things fresh.” Harper & Madison is located at 3115 10th Avenue North. The evening starts with a cocktail hour with a no-host bar at 6:00 pm, with wine, beer, and handcrafted cocktails from the Edgar Bar. The music of the Two Bit Franks starts at 7:00 and will go until 9:00 or so. Seating is limited to 50 seats. Tickets are $25 at the door, or can be reserved by calling Harper & Madison at 406-281-8550. 22 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

The Greater Billings Area

Shaped by the Yellowstone River and sheltered by the Rims, Billings is a regional hub for commerce. Whether you’re looking for bronco busting rodeo action or the relaxation of fishing or hunting, you’ll be in good company around Billings. Watch Montana’s wildlife by grabbing your binoculars and heading to the plains or hiking in the mountains that surround Billings. Use Billings as a central point to the best western attractions, events, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. Folks have found Billings a comfy haven for at least 2,000 years—just study the paintings at Pictograph Cave State Park. The wildlife drawn on the cave’s rock walls still roam this area— catch real-life glimpses along the Rimrock Trail or on a Yellowstone River float. Then fast forward to more recent history at the Moss Mansion, Pompeys Pillar National Monument or Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, less than an hour’s drive off I-94. When it comes to dining, Billings spans classic cattletown flare, authentic world taste, and even modern eating scattered all over. Where ever you go, you will find something tasty. For the microbrew fans, Billings features Montana’s only walkable brewpub crawl—six craft breweries all within walking distance in Downtown Billings. Start your tour at Angry Hanks. Billings also sports one of the states largest art galleries Yellowstone Art Museum. It houses many works from local and world artists. Courtesy of VisitMt.com
