Chief Plenty Coups State Park Chief Plenty Coups State Park holds many attractions. Our Visitor Center hosts interactive exhibits about Crow culture and on the Chief’s life along with our book/gift shop. Chief Plenty Coups’ National Historic Landmark house and store are preserved. There is a ¾ of a mile walking trail that winds around the park going past the sacred spring, the Chief’s apple orchard, Pryor Creek, and the grave site for the chief, his wives and adopted daughter. Many people come to the sacred spring to enjoy the tranquillity. There are picnic areas with barbecues, a playground, and horseshoe pits for pleasant afternoon picnics.

SALES

The creation of this State Park was part of Chief Plenty Coups’ dream to have a space where all peoples could come together to learn about each other. Chief Plenty Coups’ life encompassed a period of transition from nomadic to a sedentary way of life for the Crow Tribe. There is a rich history here, preserved and protected by the Crow Tribe and the State of Montana.

Pompeys Pillar Visitor Center Open for the season Pompeys Pillar National Monument is excited to announce that it is open for the summer beginning on April 28th.

Open Hours

April 28th – Sept. 30th: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Oct.: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Walk-ins from the front gate are always welcome after operating hours. $7 per vehicle. Interagency passes are honored and can be purchased at the fee station.

Famous Engraving

A boardwalk leads to Captain Clark’s signature and to the top of the Pillar for a great view of the surrounding landscape. There are stationary binoculars on top for better viewing. Trails lead visitors past interpretive signs, a replica of Captain Clark’s canoes, and a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. These several miles of hiking trails are a great place for bird and wildlife viewing. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts a Signature Event on July 25th commemorating the day Clark visited and signed the Pillar.

Riverwalk

The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretive center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path include quotes from Clark’s journals and tell the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15th, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on August 3rd.

Interpretive Center

The interpretive center offers various types of educational resources such as interactive displays and a movie theater. A junior ranger program is also provided by the Bureau of Land Management.

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1989 to support Pompeys Pillar National Monument, which contains the last physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806. Their mission is to preserve and protect the monument by educating visitors through interpretation, special projects, and support the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in its management of the site. The efforts of the Friends group was a driving force to get the site into the public lands domain, which resulted in the purchase of the historical land from the Foote family by the BLM in 1991. By working cooperatively with the BLM in the planning and administration of the site, the Friends group successfully accomplishes this mission.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at Alberta Bair on June 15 Fresh off their 50th Anniversary Tour, legendary Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performs at Alberta Bair Theater on Friday, June 15, 2018. Tickets, $57, $45, and $35, go on sale to the public on Friday, March 16 at 10 a.m. at the ABT Box Office on the corner of 3rd Ave N and N Broadway, by phone at 406-256-6052 (box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10 -5 and Saturday 10 - 3) and/ or online at www.albertabairtheater.org. The iconic and profoundly influential Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, often cited as a catalyst for an entire movement in Country Rock and American Roots Music, prove their legendary status with multiplatinum and gold records; strings of top ten hits such as “Fishin’ In The Dark” and “Mr. Bojangles;” multiple Grammy, IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association), CMA (Country Music Association) Awards and nominations; and accolades such as their groundbreaking Will The Circle Be Unbroken album inducted into the U.S. Library of Congress, as well as the Grammy Hall of Fame. In addition their recording of “Mr. Bojangles” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2014 “Fishin’ In the Dark” was certified platinum for digital downloads by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). Today, NGDB ( Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden, Bob Carpenter) continue their non-stop touring in their 52nd year together. Recent tour stops included Stagecoach, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and many more. In 2015 they played to a sold out crowd at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN with some close friends to film a 50th Anniversary Special, which began airing on PBS in March, 2016. The TV special earned a 2016 Emmy award for Special Event Coverage at the Mid South Regional Emmy Awards.

The Growling Old Men in concert Acoustic Americana/bluegrass mandolin and guitar duo Growling Old Men will be performing at MSU-B Cisel Hall on Saturday, June 23rd at 8 p.m. Ben Winship (mandolin, octave mandolin and vocals) and John Lowell (guitar and vocals) present a relaxed set of original, traditional and obscure music that changes each night. The Growling Old Men are featured at festivals and concerts all over the western world, having played at the Shetland Folk Festival, the Didmarton and Shrewsbury festivals in England, plus many festivals in the US and Canada. They were a favorite on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, and are in demand as instructors at music schools in the UK, Europe, Canada and the US. Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine said, “A huge strength of this act is that their playing and singing are totally complimentary, both in vitality and elegance. And while it’s risky to declare that any act has a distinctive sound, I’ll venture that the Growling Old Men has one, inspired by the hills of Appalachia, but informed by the plains and mountains of the West.” “I really enjoy playing with Ben. We challenge each other every evening,” said John Lowell in an interview from his home in Livingston, Mont. “We never know how any individual song is going to turn out, and we try to add a couple of new songs every show.” “The Growling Old Men is a musical framework which allows both John and I an ideal combination of comfort and freedom,” added Ben Winship from his home in Victor, Idaho. “Given our long history of playing together, we have built up a large repertoire from which to draw from; but more importantly, we have built a mutual trust which allows us to stretch out and explore new ground - both vocally and instrumentally.” “We’re really looking to playing in Cisel Hall– and we’re going to

have our bass player and good friend David Thompson along with us for the show,” said Lowell. “The Growling Old Men are on a miniMontana tour with additional stops in Dillon, Bozeman, Helena, and Virginia City.” The show is sponsored by Yellowstone Public Radio, Yellowstone Bluegrass Association, MSU-B Music Department, Hansen Music and Kirk Violins. Tickets are $20 dollars at the door. For more information on the band, please visit www. growlingoldmen.com.

7:30 p.m. Directed by Dave Kinnard By Jessie Jones, Nicolas Hope, and Jamie Wooten In this hilarious, fast-paced comedy, the inhabitants of one of the smallest trailer parks in Texas—four doublewides and a shed—are thrown for a loop when they realize the nearby town of Tugaloo is determined to annex them. These friends, enemies, and neighbors realize they’ll have to work together to defeat the encroaching annexation if they—and their way of life—have a snowball’s chance to survive being swallowed up by “the big guys.” So grab your Stetson and come on over to Doublewide, Texas, where life is double the fun, double the joy, and where audiences double over with laughter! Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

Hardin Area

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Museum and Visitor Center Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Enjoy the gift shop and interpretive exhibits 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily May-Sept., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct.-April. Admission is $Adult- $6, Seniors-$5, Student & Active Military $3, and 6 & under is free. For information about the museum and the area call 406665-1671 or visit BigHornCounty Museum.org. Historic District Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. The District earned a listing on the National Historic Register in 1984. Call 406-629-0134 to 7 schedule a walking tour. The Historic Preservation Office is in the depot. The 1959 Yellowstone Earthquake

June 21, 2018 — Noon | By: Larry Morris At 11:37 p.m. on August 17, 1959, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake rocked Montana’s Yellowstone country. In an instant, an entire mountainside fractured and thundered down onto the sites of unsuspecting campers. The mammoth avalanche generated hurricane-force winds ahead of it that ripped clothing from backs and heaved tidal waves in both directions of the Madison River Canyon. More than two hundred vacationers trapped in the canyon feared the dam upstream would burst. As debris and flooding overwhelmed the river, injured victims frantically searched the darkness for friends and family. Acclaimed historian Larry Morris tells the gripping minute-by-minute saga of the survivors who endured the interminable night, the first responders who risked their lives and the families who waited days and weeks for word of their missing loved ones.

Cowboy Tales, Eaton Trail in Yellowstone

June 28, 2018 — Noon | By: Don W. DeJarnett Cowboy Howard Eaton began taking people into Yellowstone country in the late 1880s, after it became the first National Park. He and his brothers established the world’s first “Dude Ranch” in Medora, North Dakota, and in 1904 moved the Eaton Ranch to Wolf, Wyoming. Howard began taking Dudes on 15 and 20 day trips through Yellowstone with as many as 100 people on horseback, including all the food, tents and other requirements for “taking a leisurely riding tour through the Park, roughing it in comfort.” Don DeJarnett, himself, spent some time as an Eaton Cowboy and will lead you on an imaginary trip through today’s Yellowstone, following as closely as possible Howard Eaton’s trail, and “camping” in the same spots where Eaton and his guests spent their nights.

16 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

Northern-Cheyenne, Busby, Lame Deer and Ashland Loop Busby

Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a Northern Cheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial.

Lame Deer

Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv.

Ashland

Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. The Museum and Gift Shop summer hours are: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend: Mon.Fri., 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Varied weekend hours. Tours of the facility are available. The St. Labre Museum is filled with Indian artifacts from all over the country. Adjacent to the museum is a Native American gift shop.

St. Labre

Founded in 1884 to serve the Northern Cheyenne Indians, St. Labre is located in the beautiful and historic Tongue River Valley, bounded by the Tongue River and the scenic Custer National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days.

In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Cheyennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides pre-school to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepeestyle church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.

18 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

Drive to the top of the world The Beartooth Highway was the brainchild of Dr. J.C.F. Siegfriedt, a local doctor who wanted to lure tourists to the Red Lodge area that was financially suffering from a waning coal industry. To obtain federal aid, Siegfriedt teamed up with O.H.P. Shelley, founder of Carbon County News, and Congressman Scott Leavitt. Together, the men successfully lobbied for the passage of the Park Approach Act in 1931. The act allocated funds to build roads to national parks. The pass was opened in 1936. The Beartooth Highway begins in the mountain town of Red Lodge and quickly starts climbing steep switchbacks. After winding 20 miles through 50-60 million-year-old mountains, you come to a pullout that provides excellent panoramas of the Beartooth Plateau. From here you can see the Hell Roaring and Silver Run Plateaus to the north. Glacier Lake is also visible, and if you look hard enough, you might even spot a mountain goat or other wildlife. From here, the road keeps ascending and reveals magnificent canyons carved by the Clark’s Fork River. Thirty miles from Red Lodge, you reach the summit of the pass at 10,974 feet. Shortly after, you come upon the only service area along the entire highway at the tiny settlement of Top of the World. The descent provides views of many mountain lakes. Besides breathtaking landscapes, look for wildflowers and wildlife. Wildflowers grow below treeline in the summers. Indian Paintbrush, monkeyflower, senecio, buttercups, lupine, arrowleaf, balsamroot, beardstongue, and forget-me-nots are among the wildflowers that carpet the country along the Beartooth Highway. Drive with caution and keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mule deer, black bears, grizzly bears, and moose. When you decide to drive the Beartooth Scenic Highway, take your time. There are many excellent recreational opportunities along the way. There are numerous hiking trails off the road, including some that lead to Island Lake and Beartooth Lake. You can take off for a short day hike or a long multi-day trek. The Beartooth Loop National Recreation Trail is an excellent 15- to 20-mile hike that goes past the original site of Camp Sawtooth, formerly an exclusive vacation retreat. Cross country skiing is also possible in early June and July. The pass is closed to cars in the winter but is groomed for snowmobiles. That’s what you get when you take a mother and daughter who describe themselves as “a couple of country gals who always loved sewing.” You’ll shop and sew in the midst of chatter and laughter. Here for an extended stay? Come in and quilt! They have a huge selection of quilting supplies and sell finished quilts, too. They have masculine, Western and other theme favorites also. Judy Niemeyer Certified Shop, Batiks, and Anita Godesign Embroidery Cards. Brother and Nolting Long Arm Dealer, sewing machine repairs and antique sewing machine sales round out their offerings.
