ArtWalk Downtown Billings Fetes Summer on Friday, August 3rd ArtWalk Downtown Billings fetes summer on Friday, August 3, 2018 from 5 – 9 p.m. This is the third of six events scheduled in ArtWalk’s 24th Season. ArtWalk is a festive outpouring of the eclectic, creative spirit alive in the Magic City. ArtWalk extends a special welcome to Liberty and Vine, now open at 2019 Montana Avenue. Five new Season Members have joined the ArtWalk: Cassie Crafton Kramer’s 504 Square Feet, This House of Books, The Sassy Biscuit Co., Bishops Cut and Color and the Fieldhouse Annex Bakery & Cafe. They will participate in the 24th Season remaining events on the first Fridays of October and December 2018 and February 2019. Kucera’s Annual Classic Car and Art Show at 2111 Montana Avenue is a One-Time Participant. Free Spirit Rock School Band plays classic music, rock and jazz selections on North Broadway near Skypoint and 2nd Avenue North. McCormick Cafe is the only ArtWalk location within the boundary of the co-occurring Magic City Blues Fest at North 25th Street and Montana Avenue. Other Montana Avenue locations are open and accessible. ArtWalk locations include art studios, galleries, museums, a downtown church, downtown businesses and other “artworthy” venues. Special Events Add Excitement to ArtWalk Downtown Billings will be bustling during the ArtWalk scheduled for Friday, August 3, 2018 from 5 - 9 p.m. In addition to the offerings at 40 ArtWalk locations across downtown, several exciting special events will coincide with the popular and well-attended ArtWalk. 4:00 p.m. The Yellowstone Art Museum offers free admission for ArtWalk beginning at 4 p.m. This is the first chance to see the just opened Montana Triennial which features over 40 Montana artists. 5:00 p.m. The newest addition to the Downtown Billings Alliance’s (DBA) “Sculpture Under Skypoint” program will be unveiled on the northeast corner of North Broadway and 2nd Avenue North. The sculpture, entitled “Grassland,” was created by local artist and metal sculptor Jennifer Tolton. Funding was provided in part by a Big Sky Economic Development Alliance (EDA) “Space to Place” grant.

Pompeys Pillar Visitor Center Open for the season Pompeys Pillar National Monument is excited to announce that it is open for the summer beginning on April 28th.

Open Hours

April 28th – Sept. 30th: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Oct.: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Walk-ins from the front gate are always welcome after operating hours. $7 per vehicle. Interagency passes are honored and can be purchased at the fee station.

Famous Engraving

A boardwalk leads to Captain Clark’s signature and to the top of the Pillar for a great view of the surrounding landscape. There are stationary binoculars on top for better viewing. Trails lead visitors past interpretive signs, a replica of Captain Clark’s canoes, and a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. These several miles of hiking trails are a great place for bird and wildlife viewing. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts a Signature Event on July 25th commemorating the day Clark visited and signed the Pillar.

Riverwalk

The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretive center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path include quotes from Clark’s journals and tell the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15th, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on August 3rd.

Interpretive Center

The interpretive center offers various types of educational resources such as interactive displays and a movie theater. A junior ranger program is also provided by the Bureau of Land Management.

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1989 to support Pompeys Pillar National Monument, which contains the last physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806. Their mission is to preserve and protect the monument by educating visitors through interpretation, special projects, and support the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in its management of the site. The efforts of the Friends group was a driving force to get the site into the public lands domain, which resulted in the purchase of the historical land from the Foote family by the BLM in 1991. By working cooperatively with the BLM in the planning and administration of the site, the Friends group successfully accomplishes this mission.

Hardin Area

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Museum and Visitor Center Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a NorthernLnCheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of . ain the Little ssm Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the o M army forever,Rd.he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort e tag Keogh . (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue ron SF River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. EXIT In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home 437 the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial.

Lame Deer

Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv.

Ashland

Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. The Museum and Gift Shop summer hours are: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend: Mon.Fri., 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Varied weekend hours. Tours of the facility are available. The St. Labre Museum is filled with Indian artifacts from all over the country. Adjacent to the museum is a Native American gift shop.

Founded in 1884 to serve the Northern Cheyenne Indians, St. Labre is located in the beautiful and historic Tongue River Valley, bounded by the Tongue River and the scenic Custer National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days.

In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Cheyennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides pre-school to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepeestyle church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.
