The Downtown Billings Alliance is pleased to announce the Alive After 5 summer schedule. The concert series will open with Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band on Thursday, June 7th from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Pub Station, 2502 1st Ave. N. Alive After 5 will take place on Thursday evenings from 5-8 p.m. in downtown Billings, starting on June 7th and continuing King Ave E King Ave E through August 30th. Lots going on at MontanaFair

Here We Go with MontanaFair opening its nine-day run August 10 with big time new concerts, new rides from the Mighty Thomas Carnival, a new themed day—Service to America Day, a new high flying high diving stunt team, and a few classic acts from past fairs. MontanaFair’s Pepsi Entertainment Series stepped up big time this year with pop superstar and the winner of this year’s “The Voice” competition, Kelly Clarkson hitting the main stage at Rimrock Auto Arena August 11. Country music star Dustin Lynch brings country back to MontanaFair for the first time in three years and kicks off the fair Friday night, August 10. Bret Michaels brings the rock to the fair with his show Sunday August 12.

Western Ranch Animal Expo

The home of the “most comfortable animals in Montana” is the Western Ranch Animal Expo at MontanaFair. That’s a quote from MontanaFair General Manager Bill Dutcher referring to the 63,000 square foot air-conditioned barn holding all the animals during shows at MontanaFair. You will be able to see and feel that comfort for yourself inside the Western Ranch Supply Animal Expo. There are all types of animals on display such as goats, hogs, sheep, turkeys, steer, rabbits, and cows just to name a few. Animals are one of the big attractions every year at MontanaFair. Western Ranch Supply with two Billings locations is a primary supplier to ranchers in Montana, Wyoming, and the western part of the Dakotas. Western Ranch Supply features a large line of animal care and handling products. This is the second year the business has been

involved in sponsorship of the Animal Expo. “From the beginning, Western Ranch Supply has focused on ag producers and 4-H,” said Keith Robinson of Western Ranch Supply. “Helping kids show their hard work and get recognized for the effort is important to our next generation and our food supply.” When you visit the Western Ranch Animal Expo, there are a few precautions to keep in mind. Animals shown on the floor of the building are in competition and being judged. Often you will see animals being prepared for their turn in the show ring. Be sure and practice proper safety when near farm animals. Always wash your hands thoroughly after leaving animal areas or after animal contact. Farm animals can expose you to pathogens which could make you ill. Frequent hand washing can help prevent illness. Taking precautions while enjoying the animals is the best way to protect yourself. Handwashing stations are provided in the Western Ranch Animal Expo and at other locations on the grounds by VIP Services.

Famous Engraving

A boardwalk leads to Captain Clark’s signature and to the top of the Pillar for a great view of the surrounding landscape. There are stationary binoculars on top for better viewing. Trails lead visitors past interpretive signs, a replica of Captain Clark’s canoes, and a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. These several miles of hiking trails are a great place for bird and wildlife viewing. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts a Signature Event on July 25th commemorating the day Clark visited and signed the Pillar.

Riverwalk

The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretive center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path include quotes from Clark’s journals and tell the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15th, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on August 3rd.

Interpretive Center

The interpretive center offers various types of educational resources such as interactive displays and a movie theater. A junior ranger program is also provided by the Bureau of Land Management.

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1989 to support Pompeys Pillar National Monument, which contains the last physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806. Their mission is to preserve and protect the monument by educating visitors through interpretation, special projects, and support the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in its management of the site. The efforts of the Friends group was a driving force to get the site into the public lands domain, which resulted in the purchase of the historical land from the Foote family by the BLM in 1991. By working cooperatively with the BLM in the planning and administration of the site, the Friends group successfully accomplishes this mission.

SuperCross at the Fair August 14, 6 p.m. at the Grandstands

When you love MotoCross as much as Harvey Singh at Singh Contracting loves MotoCross, you can do a couple of different things. First is find a great rider to start your own MotoCross team, Singh MX with Tristan Alexander as the rider. Second is to sponsor everything MotoCross you can to help support the sport. Again this year, Singh Contracting presents MontanaFair SuperCross sponsored by Archie Cochrane Ford. The Billings Motorcycle Club produces the show for the fair. This year, the club is looking to produce their biggest Super Cross event ever at the Northern Hotel Grandstands during MontanaFair. Tuesday night’s Super Cross will Pack the Place in Pink. The local breast cancer charity foundation will be Exit 497 the focal point of this year’s event. Topping off a night of Super Cross action will be a special Pit Bike Race at intermission. This special relay race will put up to 20 teams facing off on the Super Cross track at MontanaFair to raise money for breast cancer awareness and treatment. Tweaks have been madeBigon Hornthe video programming for the event. New County Museum this year, the Singh Contracting scoreboard will keep Super Cross race fans up to the moment with the position of their favorite riders in all the classes. By prioritizing the race order, the scoreboard will add to the enjoyment and excitement of the event. The Super Cross track construction from flat ground takes a lot of 87 work. S. Three days of effort go into forming the track each year. Hardin Area

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Museum and Visitor Center Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse 7 drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that ONE STOP serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. SCRaP Tacular

Every day in the 4-H Building at veries times. SCRaP in Billings is back for MontanaFair. SCRaP (Share Create Reuse and Promote) is an organization working to reuse and recycle products into useful and creative art and furniture. During MontanaFair, the upcycle Boutique will have Artist’s work available for sale. You can also get hands-on during MontanaFair. The creation station will be set up for fair-goers to come in and create crafts like a scrap wrap bracelet, a calendar journal, and bottle cap jewelry among other items. The Magic City Makerspace will have a sampling of all the fun creative things you can do in a shared space with shared tools and equipment. SCRaP partners with other nonprofits in Billings and will have information on their good works available. SCRap welcomes any nonprofit with the mission of making life better for kids and the community of Billings to join. SCRaP will also have a daily featured artist demonstrating what they do and how they do it. SCRaP will be in the 4-H Building at MontanaFair open from noon to 9 pm daily with a special early opening at 10am on Monday, August 13. They will have interactive demonstrations along with a donation station. building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. Crow Agency The Crow Reservation, covering about 2,500,000 acres in Big Horn County, encompasses Lodge Grass, St. Xavier, Crow Agency, Pryor and Fort Smith. Crow Agency has a hospital designed with unique Indian architecture. The Crow tribe has its own government. Rosebud Battle was a foreshadowing to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Battle of the Rosebud symbolizes the Indians’ first stiff resistance in the Sioux War of 1876. Its outcome had an impact on Lt. Col. George A. Custer’s devastating defeat on the Little Bighorn only a week later. The June 17, 1876, battle between the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians and General George Crook’s cavalry and infantry was one of the

largest Indian battles ever waged in the United States. It set the stage for the Indian victory eight days later when Lt. Col. George A. Custer and his immediate command were wiped out on the Little Bighorn. A self-guided tour with interpretive signs is managed by Montana State Parks. (25 miles east of Crow Agency on U.S. 212, then 20 miles south on Secondary 314, then 1.5 miles west on county road) In June 2010, the site was designated as a National Historic Landmark. There is no charge for entrance. Camping is not allowed.

The 100th Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 15-20, 2018 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, Crow Fair begins on the third Thursday in August and attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

Crow Fair Morning Parade

Besides the pow-wow, there are many other attractions. Each year the fair holds a parade, which winds its way through the campsites. A large number of women on horseback using old-style saddles (many family heirlooms) of bone and rawhide, ride in the parade. The parade begins each morning of the Fair at ten o’clock. The Color Guard leads the parade with retired veterans and active members of the armed services. Following the Color Guard are the President, Vice-President, and First Vice-President of the Crow Fair. The President carries the American Flag. In the past, the royalty of the Crow Nation would follow the Presidents; however, in modern parades the Crow Tribal Officials replace Crow royalty. The parade includes contests for best traditional dress in more than half a dozen categories. Riders on horseback were followed by elaborately decorated cars, trucks and trailers. Some of the vehicles are decorated in memorial to tribal elders who have passed during the prior year. Others carry multiple generations from elders to newborns. Princesses, ranging in age from preschool to 18, ride along the route, on horseback or by vehicle, wearing traditional, elaborate dress with perfect, modest poise.

The Crow Fair Pow Wow is much like pow wows throughout the west, except for more emphasis on traditional dance styles. You can pick out [the Crow tribe’s style] from hundreds of dancers because the dress ways are the same as the turn of the last century. The only additions are material things to decorate their regalia. The pow wow grand entry begins at 1 p.m. sharp. It is led by the veteran honor guard, followed by all the dancers who will participate in the contests that have been held throughout the week. The announcer introduces competing drum groups that surround the arbor, each taking a turn keeping the beat. In addition to the Crow people, members of other tribes come to dance and sing and sell their goods on the midway that surrounds the arbor. Dance contests, with substantial prize money, are held throughout the week with participants ranging in age from preschool to elders.

Crow Fair Rodeo

The Crow Fair Rodeo is sponsored annually by the Crow Nation. The rodeo is a daily feature at the Crow Fair, offering a full day’s entertainment of youth events, professional Indian cowboys and cowgirls, and horse racing. Rodeos occur throughout the United States, through the various rodeo associations like the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The Northern Plains Indian Rodeo Association, organized under the Indian National Finals Rodeo, is the current association that sanctions the rodeo event. The Rodeo is held at the Edison Real Bird Memorial Complex, in Crow Agency, Montana. The rodeo arena, race track, stables, and campgrounds are all part of this complex. Northern-Cheyenne, Busby, Lame Deer and Ashland Loop Busby

Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a Northern Cheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial.

Lame Deer

Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv.

Ashland

Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. The Museum and Gift Shop summer hours are: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend: Mon.Fri., 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Varied weekend hours. Tours of the facility are available. The St. Labre Museum is filled with Indian artifacts from all over the country. Adjacent to the museum is a Native American gift shop.

Founded in 1884 to serve the Northern Cheyenne Indians, St. Labre is located in the beautiful and historic Tongue River Valley, bounded by the Tongue River and the scenic Custer National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days.

In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Cheyennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides pre-school to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepeestyle church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.
