Little River Band
The Eagles founding member, the late Glenn Frey, knew what he was saying when he dubbed Little River Band “the best singing band in the world.” Through the ‘70s and ‘80s, LRB enjoyed huge chart success with multi-platinum albums and charttopping hits like: “Reminiscing,” “Cool Change,” “Lonesome Loser,” “The Night Owls,” “Take It Easy On Me,” “Help Is on Its Way,” “Happy Anniversary,” “We Two,” “Man On Your Mind,” “The Other Guy,” and “It’s A Long Way There.”
A worldwide album, CD sales, and digital downloads now top 30 million and LRB has set a record for having had Top 10 hits for 6 consecutive years – In fact, they were the very first band to achieve that remarkable status. According to BMI, “Reminiscing” has garnered rare status with over 5 million airplays on American radio, and “Lady” follows with more than 4 million airplays. Love Letters
Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters tells the story of childhood friends Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Michael Grossman and Meredith Baxter, best known as the parents from the 1980’s sitcom Family Ties, reunite to perform this two-person play. They continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school and Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually, she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them. However Andy’s last letter, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant, and gave, to

Chief Plenty Coups State Park
Chief Plenty Coups State Park holds many attractions. Our Visitor Center hosts interactive exhibits about Crow culture and on the Chief’s life along with our book/gift shop. Chief Plenty Coups’ National Historic Landmark house and store are preserved. There is a ¾ of a mile walking trail that winds around the park going past the sacred spring, the Chief’s apple orchard, Pryor Creek, and the grave site for the chief, his wives and adopted daughter. Many people come to the sacred spring to enjoy the tranquillity. There are picnic areas with barbecues, a playground, and horseshoe pits for pleasant afternoon picnics. The creation of this State Park was part of Chief Plenty Coups’ dream to have a space where all peoples could come together to learn about each other. Chief Plenty Coups’ life encompassed a period of transition from nomadic to a sedentary way of life for the Crow Tribe. There is a rich history here, preserved and protected by the Crow Tribe and the State of Montana. The Park hosts several cultural community events throughout the year. There are programs at the Park on select day’s during the summer months, Day of Honor and Heritage Day during September. In addition to public-welcome events, Chief Plenty Coups State Park also hosts teacher trainings and school field trips with standards-based curriculum, as well as tours for groups. Tim Holmes exhibit “Art & Transformation” Rocky Mountain College’s Ryniker-Morrison Gallery will host the exhibit “Art & Transformation” by artist Tim Holmes in Tech Hall on the RMC campus from August 23 through September 20, 2018. Tim Holmes is the first American artist to be invited to a solo exhibition at the Hermitage, the world's largest art museum, in St. Petersburg, Russia. Holmes notes that his work “has gained notice among some of the world's peacemakers, from the Chinese dissident students of Tiananmen Square to the Physicians for Social Responsibility.” Holmes’ work has been privately collected by Archbishop Desmond Tutu - Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr. Jonas Salk - Polio vaccine developer, Sen. Mike Mansfield, President Jimmy Carter - Nobel Peace Prize winner, Coretta Scott King, Dr. Benjamin Spock - “The Baby Doctor,” and Czech President and social transformer Václav Havel. In his Artist Statement, Holmes notes the following personal thoughts regarding himself and his passion for art: “Though most well-known for sculpture, he has worked in a variety of other media from museum installation to film to foster a rich and imaginative future. His attention has steadily drifted from making objects toward creating stories of transformation, leaving him tinkering with cultural elements that can hardly be called ‘art.’ He's keenly interested in fostering creative approaches to contemporary problems, particularly among growing social challenges of living together in a rapidly shrinking world.” Rocky Mountain College is honored to showcase Holmes’ work. The opening reception is free and open to the public. The RynikerMorrison Gallery hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., MondayFriday.

A boardwalk leads to Captain Clark’s signature and to the top of the Pillar for a great view of the surrounding landscape. There are stationary binoculars on top for better viewing. Trails lead visitors past interpretive signs, a replica of Captain Clark’s canoes, and a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. These several miles of hiking trails are a great place for bird and wildlife viewing. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts a Signature Event on July 25th commemorating the day Clark visited and signed the Pillar.
Riverwalk
The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretive center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path include quotes from Clark’s journals and tell the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15th, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on August 3rd.
Interpretive Center
The interpretive center offers various types of educational resources such as interactive displays and a movie theater. A junior ranger program is also provided by the Bureau of Land Management.
The Friends of Pompeys Pillar
The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1989 to support Pompeys Pillar National Monument, which contains the last physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806. Their mission is to preserve and protect the monument by educating visitors through interpretation, special projects, and support the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in its management of the site. The efforts of the Friends group was a driving force to get the site into the public lands domain, which resulted in the purchase of the historical land from the Foote family by the BLM in 1991. By working cooperatively with the BLM in the planning and administration of the site, the Friends group successfully accomplishes this mission.

Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest
Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. Visit in October for a haunted tour and in December for a candlelight tour. The museum also does group tours and school tours. Please call to schedule your tour today! The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.
Crow Agency The Crow Reservation, covering about 2,500,000 acres in Big Horn County, encompasses Lodge Grass, St. Xavier, Crow Agency, Pryor and Fort Smith. Crow Agency has a hospital designed with unique Indian architecture. The Crow tribe has its own government. Rosebud Battle was a foreshadowing to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Battle of the Rosebud symbolizes the Indians’ first stiff resistance in the Sioux War of 1876. Its outcome had an impact on Lt. Col. George A. Custer’s devastating defeat on the Little Bighorn only a week later. The June 17, 1876, battle between the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians and General George Crook’s cavalry and infantry was one of the largest Indian battles ever waged in the United States. It set the stage for the Indian victory eight days later when Lt. Col. George A. Custer and his immediate command were wiped out on the Little Bighorn. A self-guided tour with interpretive signs is managed by Montana State Parks. (25 miles east of Crow Agency on U.S. 212, then 20 miles south on Secondary 314, then 1.5 miles west on county road) In June 2010, the site was designated as a National Historic Landmark. There is no charge for entrance. Camping is not allowed.

Gordon McConnell Monroe Crossing Exhibit will be viewable from September 5 through October 11
The Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University Billings will host an artist reception for Gordon McConnell’s exhibition, When the West Was Won, beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 20. At 5:30 p.m., Gallery Director Dr. Leanne Gilbertson will conduct a conversation with the artist about the exhibition in the gallery. A question and answer session with the audience will follow. When the West Was Won is comprised of paintings and mixed-media works completed by Billings-based Gordon McConnell over the past five years. Since the late 1980s, McConnell has created works inspired by Western film frames and informed by his sustained study of the history of the American West and its representations in literature, art, film, and photography. While his personal visual language is likely familiar to most in the region, When the West Was Won brings together familiar images with some of the artist’s latest departures. Together, these works offer a unique opportunity to reflect on the breadth and depth of the artist’s interrogations of our collective cultural fantasies and individualized experiences of the American West. Throughout his work, McConnell utilizes keen wit, sustained research and painterly sincerity to explore the aesthetic allure and cultural fascination of the American West. This suite of longingly-wrought works prompts viewers to consider their investments in each deceptively familiar, yet ultimately mysterious image—the promises they hold, and the losses they contain. Ultimately, When the West Was Won raises questions about the roles these images play in constructing ideals of American masculinity, loyalty, and independence and offer a timely meditation on what the West and its frontier myth has meant and continues to mean for the collective American psyche. Gordon McConnell received a BA in Studio Art from Baylor University and an MA in Art History from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He served as Curator at Yellowstone Art Center, now Yellowstone Art Museum, for over twenty years. In a gallery adjacent to the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to view some of the Western films that have inspired the artist and will be invited to create their own visual or written interpretations of the impact these images have had on their own lives. This interactive exhibition is designed and installed by MSU Billings art students and gallery assistants, Angel Shandy and Morgan Syring. The reception is catered, free and open to the public. For more information about the artist visit: www. gordonmcconnellstudio.com. The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts building on the Montana State University Billings campus. Parking on the campus is free after 5 p.m. For more information visit www.msubillings.edu/gallery or www. facebook.com/northcuttsteelegallery. Bluegrass band Monroe Crossing will be in concert on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Cisel Recital Hall at MSU-B. Doors open at 6:30, concert starts at 7 pm. Admission is $20 at the door. Sponsored by: Yellowstone Bluegrass Association, Yellowstone Public Radio, Hansen Music and Kirk House of Music. For more info about the band go to: www.monroecrossing.com
Band bio: Named in honor of Bill Monroe, “The Father of Bluegrass Music,” Monroe Crossing dazzles audiences with an electrifying blend of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and heartfelt originals. Their superb musicianship and on-stage rapport have entertained audiences across the United States, Canada and Europe. Based in the twin cities of Minnesota, Monroe Crossing plays an average of 150 shows a year in intimate rooms, at major venues and outdoor festivals. They are favorites among bluegrass connoisseurs and non-bluegrass audiences alike. They love introducing newcomers to bluegrass music! Monroe Crossing is made up of five very distinct personalities with differing musical backgrounds. When combined their individual histories make for a very unique ensemble sound. Band members are: Derek Johnson - guitar & lead vocals; Lisa Fuglie - fiddle, mandolin, guitar & lead vocals; Matt Thompson - mandolin, fiddle & harmony vocals; Mark Anderson - bass & bass vocals; and David Robinson - banjo, dobro, harmonica & harmony vocals. Because they met through the music of Bill Monroe they like to say they had a “Monroe Crossing.” Among their many honors, Monroe Crossing was awarded "Bluegrass Album of the Year" by the Minnesota Music Academy In 2003. In 2007 they were inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. They have twice been selected to perform at the annual “World of Bluegrass” convention hosted by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA). And they have appeared twice at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2016, Monroe Crossing had the honor of being the first Minnesota bluegrass band to ever perform in South Korea. Monroe Crossing has recorded 15 CDs to date. Their latest release, “Monroe Crossing Plays Classic Country," is a collection of some of our favorite songs from the golden ear of county music. Whether playing traditional bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, original bluegrass or even songs outside the bluegrass genre, Monroe Crossing is one of the most active and most entertaining acts on the bluegrass scene today!
