It’s time to carry the banner on our stage with Disney’s Newsies! Set in turn-of-the-century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy, and leader of a band of teen-aged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right! Featuring the now-classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience. Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 7:30 p.m. (Doors Open At 7 p.m.) Sunday Matinees: 2 p.m. (Doors Open At 1:30 p.m.) To Season Ticket Holders August 14, 2018 To The General Public and On-Line Sales August 21, 2018 Ticket Prices: Adults: $22 Student/Senior/Military: $20 The Pub Station 2502 1st Ave N September 21

Watch out, though – you could be the next victim! The game begins at 7 p.m. with a briefing on the rules, character assignments, and dispersal of investigation material. Points are earned (or lost) and while the results are tallied refreshments are available. Must be 18 to play. Reservations are $25 per person, costumes are welcome (though characters are not assigned ahead of time). Moss Mansion Museum 914 Division St. September 21, 22

Little River Band
The Eagles founding member, the late Glenn Frey, knew what he was saying when he dubbed Little River Band “the best singing band in the world.” Through the ‘70s and ‘80s, LRB enjoyed huge chart success with multi-platinum albums and charttopping hits like: “Reminiscing,” “Cool Change,” “Lonesome Loser,” “The Night Owls,” “Take It Easy On Me,” “Help Is on Its Way,” “Happy Anniversary,” “We Two,” “Man On Your Mind,” “The Other Guy,” and “It’s A Long Way There.” A worldwide album, CD sales, and digital downloads now top 30 million and LRB has set a record for having had Top 10 hits for 6 consecutive years – In fact, they were the very first band to achieve that remarkable status. According to BMI, “Reminiscing” has garnered rare status with over 5 million airplays on American radio, and “Lady” follows with more than 4 million airplays. Love Letters
Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters tells the story of childhood friends Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Michael Grossman and Meredith Baxter, best known as the parents from the 1980’s sitcom Family Ties, reunite to perform this two-person play. They continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes
on to excel at Yale and law school and Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually, she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them. However Andy’s last letter, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant, and gave, to each other over the years—physically apart, perhaps, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be. Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.
Western Room
Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.
American Indian Collection
A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Give Young Wildlife A Chance Montana laws prohibit the capture, feeding, possession and harassment of wildlife—both game and nongame species—necessary in part to curb the urge to “help” newborn wildlife.
Wildlife biologists see too often cases of newborn wildlife being removed from the wild by people who fear the animal has been abandoned by its parent—when the adult is actually nearby. “Please remind friends and family to leave young wildlife untouched this spring,” said Ron Aasheim, FWP spokesman. “If you care, leave them there. It is the best way to ensure that young wildlife is raised as nature intended—in the wild.” To learn more about living with Montana’s wildlife, visit FWP online at fwp.mt.gov; click the Fish & Wildlife tab, then click “Living With Wildlife”.
Bats in Billings
From the Montana Audubon Center. With all of these mosquitoes around, it's a great time to cheer on the bats and other animals that eat them! Montana is home to 15 species of bats, 12 of which can be found in Yellowstone County. The most common is the Little Brown Bat (also called Little Brown Myotis), which is about the size of a swallow and zips around in the air catching insects at dusk. If you are near a pond or lake or ditch, really anywhere in Billings, you have a good chance of seeing one. Bats are well known for navigating via echolocation, emitting short, high-pitched calls that bounce off objects and give them an audio picture of the surrounding space. The closer they need to pay attention, the higher the frequency of sounds and the more detail they are able to hear. When going after prey, for example, Little Brown Bats can make up to 200 of these calls per second! The bat-themed programs at the Montana Audubon Center are some of our most popular, and the first of them, on June 29th, saw a sold-out crowd. If you'd like to join in for our next (August 17th), make sure and register in advance - look for the registration link on our calendar page. https://mtaudubon.org/ center/upcoming-programs-events/ While the program is free, registration is required.

Yellowstone Kelly By www.visitbillings.com
Keep Not Standing Fixed and Rooted, Briskly Venture, Briskly Roam... At the end of the summer in 2017 a promise 89-years in the making was finally fulfilled when the Yellowstone Kelly Interpretive Site officially opened to the public. The restoration was led by the Billings Chamber of Commerce under the leadership of Bill Cole. In 1928 the Billings Chamber, City of Billings and State of Montana promised a burial site befitting the three-time veteran and American legend, Luther Sage “Yellowstone” Kelly. While it took a bit longer than planned, the site today absolutely fulfills the promise. ali C ree k Rd Kelly (1849-1928) was one of the most notable American veterans, scouts, and warriors of his time. Born to an affluent family in upstate New York, Kelly obtained a fine education but yearned for the adventure of the Wild West. Sitting back and waiting was not part of Kelly’s character, so at the age of 16, Kelly lied about his age, enlisted in the military, and thus his adventures began. Yellowstone Kelly was an authentic Western character. His real-life adventures inspired many articles, books and even a Hollywood movie. He was a scholar and author, a veteran of three wars, an exceptional hunter and trader, and a key player in scouting and taming the Wild West. His friends and confidants included the likes of Col. Nelson A. Miles, “Buffalo Bill” Cody, and President Teddy Roosevelt. His travels and military assignments took him from New York to the Dakotas and Montana, and Skyview Dr Skyway from Alaska to the Philippines before retiring to a quieter life in California. School High In his twilight years, Luther Sage “Yellowstone” Kelly requested to have his body buried in the land where his restless spirit had experienced its greatest adventures, stating “I feel my body will rest better in Montana, the scene of myLn Wicks earlier activities, than it would in the vastness of Arlington, where I purposed having it laid.” Thanks to the tireless work of the Yellowstone Kelly Interpretive Site Committee, major gifts from Singh Contracting and Phillips 66 as well as the investment of many incredible sponsors and donors, the new Interpretive Site opened within Swords Rimrock Park in September of 2017. Here Yellowstone Kelly rests peacefully atop Kelly Mountain in Billings, overlooking the Yellowstone River. The Site celebrates the history not only of Yellowstone Kelly, but of the heritage of our region. It offers ample parking, an amphitheater for seatingAlduring kal presentations, informational Crebreathtaking views only found signage, a celebratory donor wall and, of course,i the ek Rd from the Rimrocks. To get to the site, head to Swords Rimrock Park, east of Billings Logan International Airport. The park has two entrances; one near the airport roundabout and another about a mile east on Airport Rd. A paved trail system connects the two entrances and the entire park provides spectacular vistas. The Yellowstone Kelly Interpretive Site is located at the east end of Swords Rimrock Park. Take the second entrance to the park, near the bathroom and picnic shelter. At the stop sign, turn left and follow the road slowly up the mountain to the parking area. The site can be enjoyed on foot. Learn more at www.YellowstoneKelly.org.

Famous Engraving
A boardwalk leads to Captain Clark’s signature and to the top of the Pillar for a great view of the surrounding landscape. There are stationary binoculars on top for better viewing. Trails lead visitors past interpretive signs, a replica of Captain Clark’s canoes, and a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. These several miles of hiking trails are a great place for bird and wildlife viewing. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts a Signature Event on July 25th commemorating the day Clark visited and signed the Pillar.
Riverwalk
The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretive center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path include quotes from Clark’s journals and tell the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15th, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on August 3rd.
Interpretive Center
The interpretive center offers various types of educational resources such as interactive displays and a movie theater. A junior ranger program is also provided by the Bureau of Land Management.
The Friends of Pompeys Pillar
The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1989 to support Pompeys Pillar National Monument, which contains the last physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806. Their mission is to preserve and protect the monument by educating visitors through interpretation, special projects, and support the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in its management of the site. The efforts of the Friends group was a driving force to get the site into the public lands domain, which resulted in the purchase of the historical land from the Foote family by the BLM in 1991. By working cooperatively with the BLM in the planning and administration of the site, the Friends group successfully accomplishes this mission.

Bozeman Trail & Fort C. F. Smith
The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 18631866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Fort Custer
Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest
Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.
Crow Agency The Crow Reservation, covering about 2,500,000 acres in Big Horn County, encompasses Lodge Grass, St. Xavier, Crow Agency, Pryor and Fort Smith. Crow Agency has a hospital designed with unique Indian architecture. The Crow tribe has its own government. Rosebud Battle was a foreshadowing to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Battle of the Rosebud symbolizes the Indians’ first stiff resistance in the Sioux War of 1876. Its outcome had an impact on Lt. Col. George A. Custer’s devastating defeat on the Little Bighorn only a week later. The June 17, 1876, battle between the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians and General George Crook’s cavalry and infantry was one of the largest Indian battles ever waged in the United States. It set the stage for the Indian victory eight days later when Lt. Col. George A. Custer and his immediate command were wiped out on the Little Bighorn. A self-guided tour with interpretive signs is managed by Montana State Parks. (25 miles east of Crow Agency on U.S. 212, then 20 miles south on Secondary 314, then 1.5 miles west on county road) In June 2010, the site was designated as a National Historic Landmark. There is no charge for entrance. Camping is not allowed.

Drive to the top of the world
The Beartooth Highway was the brainchild of Dr. J.C.F. Siegfriedt, a local doctor who wanted to lure tourists to the Red Lodge area that was financially suffering from a waning coal industry. To obtain federal aid, Siegfriedt teamed up with O.H.P. Shelley, founder of Carbon County News, and Congressman Scott Leavitt. Together, the men successfully lobbied for the passage of the Park Approach Act in 1931. The act allocated funds to build roads to national parks. The pass was opened in 1936. The Beartooth Highway begins in the mountain town of Red Lodge and quickly starts climbing steep switchbacks. After winding 20 miles through 50-60 million-year-old mountains, you come to a pullout that provides excellent panoramas of the Beartooth Plateau. From here you can see the Hell Roaring and Silver Run Plateaus to the north. Glacier Lake is also visible, and if you look hard enough, you might even spot a mountain goat or other wildlife. From here, the road keeps ascending and reveals magnificent canyons carved by the Clark’s Fork River. Thirty miles from Red Lodge, you reach the summit of the pass at 10,974 feet. Shortly after, you come upon the only service area along the entire highway at the tiny settlement of Top of the World. The descent provides views of many mountain lakes. Besides breathtaking landscapes, look for wildflowers and wildlife. Wildflowers grow below treeline in the summers. Indian Paintbrush, monkeyflower, senecio, buttercups, lupine, arrowleaf, balsamroot, beardstongue, and forgetme-nots are among the wildflowers that carpet the country along the Beartooth Highway. Drive with caution and keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mule deer, black bears, grizzly bears, and moose. When you decide to drive the Beartooth Scenic Highway, take your time. There are many excellent recreational opportunities along the way. There are numerous hiking trails off the road, including some that lead to Island Lake and Beartooth Lake. You can take off for a short day hike or a long multi-day trek. The Beartooth Loop National Recreation Trail is an excellent 15- to 20-mile hike that goes past the original site of Camp Sawtooth, formerly an exclusive vacation retreat. Cross country skiing is also possible in early June and July. The pass is closed to cars in the winter but is groomed for snowmobiles. Monroe Crossing
Bluegrass band Monroe Crossing will be in concert on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Cisel Recital Hall at MSU-B. Doors open at 6:30, concert starts at 7 pm. Admission is $20 at the door. Sponsored by: Yellowstone Bluegrass Association, Yellowstone Public Radio, Hansen Music and Kirk House of Music. For more info about the band go to: www.monroecrossing.com
Band bio: Named in honor of Bill Monroe, “The Father of Bluegrass Music,” Monroe Crossing dazzles audiences with an electrifying blend of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and heartfelt originals. Their superb musicianship and on-stage rapport have entertained audiences across the United States, Canada and Europe. Based in the twin cities of Minnesota, Monroe Crossing plays an average of 150 shows a year in intimate rooms, at major venues and outdoor festivals. They are favorites among bluegrass connoisseurs and non-bluegrass audiences alike. They love introducing newcomers to bluegrass music! Monroe Crossing is made up of five very distinct personalities with differing musical backgrounds. When combined their individual histories make for a very unique ensemble sound. Band members are: Derek Johnson - guitar & lead vocals; Lisa Fuglie - fiddle, mandolin, guitar & lead vocals; Matt Thompson - mandolin, fiddle & harmony vocals; Mark Anderson - bass & bass vocals; and David Robinson - banjo, dobro, harmonica & harmony vocals. Because they met through the music of Bill Monroe they like to say they had a “Monroe Crossing.” Among their many honors, Monroe Crossing was awarded "Bluegrass Album of the Year" by the Minnesota Music Academy In 2003. In 2007 they were inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. They have twice been selected to perform at the annual “World of Bluegrass” convention hosted by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA). And they have appeared twice at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2016, Monroe Crossing had the honor of being the first Minnesota bluegrass band to ever perform in South Korea. Monroe Crossing has recorded 15 CDs to date. Their latest release, “Monroe Crossing Plays Classic Country," is a collection of some of our favorite songs from the golden ear of county music. Whether playing traditional bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, original bluegrass or even songs outside the bluegrass genre, Monroe Crossing is one of the most active and most entertaining acts on the bluegrass scene today!
