HarvestFest 2018

9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, October 13th, 2018 is Downtown Billings’ 15th Annual Harvestfest under Skypoint from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hosted by the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA), this fall festival features arts and crafts tents, farmers market produce, a variety of food trucks, a pumpkin pie baking contest, a gift-basket raffle, and live entertainment under Skypoint at Broadway and 2nd Ave. N. The Montana Brewing Company is the Title Sponsor of Harvestfest and will host a beer garden outside at 113 N. Broadway which will feature several varieties of German beer, seasonal pumpkin ales, and Montana Brewing Company’s own Octoberfest Ale. The beer garden will include outdoor games and the traditional German Stein Holding Contest. The pumpkin pie baking contest will take place under SkyPoint starting at 11 a.m. with a special panel of Judges from the Chefs and Cooks of Montana; the contest results will be announced at 1 p.m. The contest is open to the public and applications can be found on www.downtownbillings.com. The

The NILE’s Beer & BBQ at the Metra Park

the food industry and support the agriculture industry that grows the products. It’s comprised of two elements, BBQ contests for competitive BBQ teams and a festival for the public to sample meat and beer. Get 10 sampling tickets for $25, the tickets can be used for sampling beer (must be 21+) or bbq. You can use the sampling tickets for all beer, all bbq, or a combination of both! The NILE Beer-B-Q includes a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned contest--the winning team is qualified for the world championships. Battles of the Rosebud and Little Bighorn

Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Wild Pony Racing Now Accepting Entries When even the most seasoned rodeo goers are leaning on the fence watching, you know it's good viewing. In place of mutton busting the NILE has Wild Pony Racing during the three ProRodeo performances. It's wild and hilarious--don't miss the most entertaining event at the rodeo. The objective is to hold on, get on and stay on. Three kids 13-yearold and under and weighing less than 120 pounds make up a team. Each team is given one haltered, wild, pony. The three kids must work together to hold on to the lead rope of the pony, and one must get on the pony. Once one of the team members is astride, they must stay on for two seconds. Five teams will compete each night, the top two teams from Thursday (October 18) and Friday (October 19) will return for the finals Saturday night (October 20). Ponies provided by Lazy 3S Rodeo Co. • Teams must be turned into office with all three teams members forms completed and signed before teams are considered entered. • Teams must also pay in full at time of entry to be considered entered. • We will accept 10 total teams and entries close Friday, October 12th. • Teams will be drawn but can indicate at entry time whether they have a preference of Thursday or Friday night. Drive to the top of the world The Beartooth Highway was the brainchild of Dr. J.C.F. Siegfriedt, a local doctor who wanted to lure tourists to the Red Lodge area that was financially suffering from a waning coal industry. To obtain federal aid, Siegfriedt teamed up with O.H.P. Shelley, founder of Carbon County News, and Congressman Scott Leavitt. Together, the men successfully lobbied for the passage of the Park Approach Act in 1931. The act allocated funds to build roads to national parks. The pass was opened in 1936. The Beartooth Highway begins in the mountain town of Red Lodge and quickly starts climbing steep switchbacks. After winding 20 miles through 50-60 million-year-old mountains, you come to a pullout that provides excellent panoramas of the Beartooth Plateau. From here you can see the Hell Roaring and Silver Run Plateaus to the north. Glacier Lake is also visible, and if you look hard enough, you might even spot a mountain goat or other wildlife. From here, the road keeps ascending and reveals magnificent canyons carved by the Clark’s Fork River. Thirty miles from Red Lodge, you reach the summit of the pass at 10,974 feet. Shortly after, you come upon the only service area along the entire highway at the tiny settlement of Top of the World. The descent provides views of many mountain lakes. Besides breathtaking landscapes, look for wildflowers and

wildlife. Wildflowers grow below treeline in the summers. Indian Paintbrush, monkeyflower, senecio, buttercups, lupine, arrowleaf, balsamroot, beardstongue, and forget-me-nots are among the wildflowers that carpet the country along the Beartooth Highway. Drive with caution and keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mule deer, black bears, grizzly bears, and moose. When you decide to drive the Beartooth Scenic Highway, take your time. There are many excellent recreational opportunities along the way. There are numerous hiking trails off the road, including some that lead to Island Lake and Beartooth Lake. You can take off for a short day hike or a long multi-day trek. The Beartooth Loop National Recreation Trail is an excellent 15- to 20-mile hike that goes past the original site of Camp Sawtooth, formerly an exclusive vacation retreat. Cross country skiing is also possible in early June and July. The pass is closed to cars in the winter but is groomed for snowmobiles. The Historic Hardin Area

cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Big Horn Museum Battlefield, isCounty situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest 7 town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. 8 S. U. d l Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman O who came to this territory from Texas.

Big Horn County

Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Bozeman Trail & Fort C. F. Smith

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 18631866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Enjoy the gift shop and interpretive exhibits 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily May-Sept., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct.-April. Historic District

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. The District earned a listing on the National Historic Register in 1984. Call 406-629-0134 to schedule a walking tour. The Historic Preservation Office is in the depot. Huntley Project Museum The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture tells the unique story of the Huntley Irrigation Project. With 10.4 acres, 18 homestead buildings, hundreds of farm implements, and thousands of other artifacts on display, the Museum interprets, preserves restores and portrays life on the Project from the early 1900s to the late 20th century. The display at Osborn Park has one of the largest collections of horse-drawn machinery, early sugar beet equipment, corn, grain and hay mowers. Other displays include a tar paper shack, 2 school houses, an early day doctor’s office, bank, and a horse barn made from sawed cottonwood. The Huntley Irrigation Project was the fifth U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project in the United States and opened June 26th, 1907. Staff gives custom guided tours year-round! From Labor Day until Memorial Day the museum is open from Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Expanded hours after Memorial Day for the summer. Summer hours are 9 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week.

Universal Accessibility It is the goal to make the museum accessible to everyone. Public restrooms, located in the main building, are fully accessible. Pioneer boardwalk town and main building are fully accessible. The ten-acre campus is on flat ground with boardwalks and grass paths. Please call with any special arrangement requests. Tours Daily tours generally last 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. Staff can do an abbreviated tour for inclement weather or time constraints. Several times a year there are special tours. The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

Crow Agency The Crow Reservation, covering about 2,500,000 acres in Big Horn County, encompasses Lodge Grass, St. Xavier, Crow Agency, Pryor and Fort Smith. Crow Agency has a hospital designed with unique Indian architecture. The Crow tribe has its own government. Rosebud Battle was a foreshadowing to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Battle of the Rosebud symbolizes the Indians’ first stiff resistance in the Sioux War of 1876. Its outcome had an impact on Lt. Col. George A. Custer’s devastating defeat on the Little Bighorn only a week later. The June 17, 1876, battle between the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians and General George Crook’s cavalry and infantry was one of the largest Indian battles ever waged in the United States. It set the stage for the Indian victory eight days later when Lt. Col. George A. Custer and his immediate command were wiped out on the Little Bighorn. A self-guided tour with interpretive signs is managed by Montana State Parks. (25 miles east of Crow Agency on U.S. 212, then 20 miles south on Secondary 314, then 1.5 miles west on county road) In June 2010, the site was designated as a National Historic Landmark. There is no charge for entrance. Camping is not allowed.

Pictograph Cave State Park

Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana. The Pictograph Cave site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, because of its archeological significance. Today's visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the mystery of this extraordinary site and tour the new visitor center. Prehistoric hunters who camped in Pictograph Cave left behind artifacts and over 100 pictographs, or rock paintings. The oldest rock art in the cave is over 2,000 years old. Their interpretations are still subject to debate. The images of animals, warriors and even rifles tell a story that has lasted thousands of years. The park's three main caves - Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost cave - were home to generations of prehistoric hunters. The caves were carved from the Eagle sandstone cliff by the forces of water and wind. The first recorded discovery of artifacts and paintings in the caves was made in 1936. Approximately 30,000 artifacts, ranging from stone tools, weapons, paintings and the instruments used, were excavated from the site. The pigments used in the rock art provide researchers to date when people inhabited the region and give insights into their lifestyle. The artifacts discovered allow researchers to pinpoint which native peoples used the caves and when they inhabited the region. The park has a pleasant 1/4 loop trail to the caves, with interpretative displays along the route identifying and explaining the natural features, the prehistoric paintings and vegetation found in the area. Pictograph Cave is the deepest of the three

main caves, at approximately 160 feet wide and 45 feet deep. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars to get a better view of the rock art. Allow at least an hour to enjoy the park, it's visitor center and trail. Also an excellent site for bird watching. There are picnic facilities available for day use only, but no camping is permitted. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the new Visitor Center's interpretive displays and gift shop. The park is 23 acres in size and 3,500 feet in elevation.

Bats in Billings ZooMontana ZooMontana is a 70-acre wildlife From the Montana Audubon Center. With all of these mosquitoes around, it's a great time to cheer on the bats and other animals that eat them! Montana is home to 15 species of bats, 12 of which can be found in Yellowstone County. The most common is the Little Brown Bat (also called Little Brown Myotis), which is about the size of a swallow and zips around in the air catching insects at dusk. If you are near a pond or lake or ditch, really anywhere in Billings, you have a good chance of seeing one. Bats are well known for navigating via echolocation, emitting short, high-pitched calls that bounce off objects and give them an audio picture of the surrounding space. The closer they need to pay attention, the higher the frequency of sounds and the more detail they are able to hear. When going after prey, for example, Little Brown Bats can make up to 200 of these calls per second! The bat-themed programs at the Montana Audubon Center are some of our most popular, and the first of them, on June 29th, saw a sold-out crowd.
