Straight No Chaser

If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither straitlaced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of nine unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense... and with a sense of humor. On the road, Straight No Chaser has built a reputation as an unforgettable live act. The upcoming tour coincides with the 10th Anniversary of Straight No Chaser signing with Atlantic Records and the release of their debut album, HOLIDAY SPIRITS after a video of the group performing “12 Days of Christmas” went viral on YouTube and became the most viewed video of 2007. Upon the release of HOLIDAY SPIRITS in 2008, The New York Times predicted: “this may be the year’s most unlikely major label story.”

Now, ten years later with six fulllength albums and four EPs under their belt, the group will hit the road to celebrate and invite fans to join them on the “One Shot Tour.” Alberta Bair Theater 2722 3rd Ave. N www.albertabairtheater.org November 2

Cirque Mechanics 42 FT—A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels

Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages. At the center of every circus rests a 42-foot ring full of thrills, laughs, and excitement. 42FT – A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels, is the latest invention from the creative minds of Cirque Mechanics. The company dares us to leap into the circus ring and experience the timelessness of this evolving art form. The shows’ unique mechanical interpretations of the traditional, and its story full of the lore of the historic one-ring circus create a welcoming place, like a big top, where we can be amazed. The action showcases a galloping mechanical metal horse and a rotating tent frame for strongmen, acrobats, and aerialists. Cirque Mechanics signature style is wrapped in acrobatics, mechanical marvels, and a bit of clowning around. 42FT follows the great successes of Birdhouse Factory, Boomtown, and Pedal Punk. Proceeds from the event will go to Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.). B.A.C.A. creates a safe environment for abused children, they stand with adolescents who have to face their offenders, a shield of honor to protect the innocent: their own personal bodyguards. Produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, CHICAGO earned six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to

transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. The national tour is directed by David Hyslop and choreographed by David Bushman. Walter Bobbie is the director of the original New York Production and Ann Reinking was the original choreographer in the style of Bob Fosse. CHICAGO features set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Ken Billington and sound design by Scott Lehrer. The production also features orchestrations by Ralph Burns, supervising music direction by Rob Fisher. CHICAGO is a production not to be missed. Reviewers agree. Time Magazine calls it “A Triumph;” Newsweek raves “Smashing;” and Entertainment Weekly sums it up by calling CHICAGO “Broadway’s Most Electrifying Show.” Alberta Bair Theater 2722 3rd Ave. N www.albertabairtheater.org November 14

Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

THE MIKADO (sort of )

The Mikado (Sort of) will be performed November 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $16 for adults, $10 for students, seniors and military. The Mikado (Sort of) is based on the Gilbert and Sullivan production of the same name. This reimagining takes place in a galaxy far, far, away. Nanki-Who, son of the potentate of Mars-apan, The Mikado, fled his father’s imperial court to escape a forced marriage with Katisha, a not-so-attractive, elderly robot. Nanki-Who met and fell in love with Hum-Hum, a lovely young woman with two protective sisters. Hum-Hum, however, was already betrothed to her overlord, which forced Nanki-Who to contemplate leaving ZuZu-Who, once again, in despair. Boasting a talented cast filled with both new and familiar faces, The Mikado (Sort of) presents a rollicking and fresh look at the machinations of love and politics. Co-directed by Janie Sutton, DeLaney Hardy, and Ginger Roll, and stage managed by Kristin Mayer, this production is a not-to-be-missed treat with costumes and sets that will amuse and amaze, thanks to the creative and talented Glenda Brauneis. For more information or tickets contact NOVA Center for the Performing Arts at 406.591.9535, visit the box office, open noon-6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at 2317 Montana Avenue, Billings, or visit the website at www.novabillings.org.

Local food pantries across the state are preparing to receive donations from the Hunters Against Hunger program. The program, a partnership between FWP and the Montana Food Bank Network, allows hunters to donate a portion or all of their legally harvested big game animals to be processed free of charge. The meat is then provided directly to a local food pantry in the area. Since its inception in 2014, over 130,000 pounds of meat has been donated through the program and distributed to Montanans struggling with food insecurity through 29 local food pantry sites. Meat is extremely expensive for food pantries to provide, yet a highly nutritious resource for their clients. “We have never in my time here had this much game. Truly a huge gift,” said Jill Holder, operations manager at Gallatin Valley Food Bank, about the impact of the program. Participation by local meat processors and hunters are the keys to success for this growing program. Big game donations (deer, elk, antelope, moose and wild buffalo) can only be accepted as part of the program by authorized participating meat processors set up around the state. Only legally harvested or confiscated big game animals can be donated. No road kill can be donated. A full list of authorized processors can be found at the Montana Food Bank Network website at mf bn.org/ hunters-against-hunger To offset the cost of processing, hunters purchasing a Montana hunting license are given the opportunity to make a monetary donation to this program. Additional donations to the program are being accepted by the Montana Food Bank Network.

Looking for some fun-in-the-sun for the whole family? Lake Elmo is a terrific place to go play in the water. Hosting outdoor activities year-round, there’s something to do for everyone. The main attraction, the lake itself, is a great place to swim, paddleboard, boat and fish. Only non-motorized boating allowed, but that does not restrict the fun activities in the lake. Locals can be seen doing yoga in the water on paddleboards taught by local instructors. Families come out to fish and swim and even bring along their dogs to enjoy the water. With 64 acres of lake to explore, water lovers can easily spend an entire day paddle boarding and boating. The lake is re-stocked with fish every year and fishing can be enjoyed from the handicapped-accessible dock, the surrounding trail or a boat. The 200-square-foot dog park has become a favorite place for dogs and their people. It even includes a lake front area for dog paddling. Dogs must be 3 months or older and be on a leash. No one can have more than two dogs in the park at a time. If hiking or walking is more your speed, A 1.4-mile trail surrounds the lake. It is perfect for bird watching. The path isn’t paved all the way around, but is packed, level and maintained. There is plenty of parking with the trails connecting the amenities around the lake including the Fish, Wildlife & Parks office on the south side of the lake. The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks office is this region’s main office and interpretive center. This fall in Southeast Montana

Yard Office Rd.

As fall moves into full swing, Visit Southeast Montana tourism suggests a throwback activity; Sunday afternoon drives. “While fall in the mountains is spectacular, the prairies, buttes and breaks of Southeast Montana have their own beauty,” said marketing manager Brenda Maas. “Look to river valleys for the golden splendor of massive cottonwoods, but remember that the leaves on prairie grasses change, too. The mauve colors are amazing.” Maas suggests daybreak and dusk as ideal times for prairie “colors,” especially as they pertain to photography and wildlife watching. She offers the following sample routes for travelers and locals alike. Prairie Tour Montana Highway 7 from Wibaux to Baker to Ekalaka cuts across the rolling prairies of Southeast Montana. Be sure to stop at Medicine Rocks State Park for a closer look at the pictographs and petroglyphs from past centuries. See http://www.southeastmontana.com/medicine-rocks for more information.

Prairie Tour 2 The Warrior Trail, or what is locally known as the “212 Cutoff,” crosses both the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations and exemplifies the autumn beauty of Southeast Montana’s prairies. Just east of Ashland, the Custer National Forest surprises visitors with more jagged terrain, dotted with pines. For more details on recreation areas, see the Ashland Ranger District’s map at: https://www.fs.usda. gov/recarea/custergallatin/recarea/?recid=60823 Musselshell River Tour Follow MT Highway 12 from Ryegate to Roundup to Melstone, Ingomar and Forsyth. Stop at the RiverWalk in Roundup for a closer look and to stretch your legs. From Forsyth, follow the Yellowstone River tour but don’t forget to stop at a local shop for a bite to eat. Yellowstone River Middle Tour Montana Old Highway 10, which skirts between the Yellowstone River and I-90, features golden cottonwood colors and several stops along the Trail to the Little Bighorn, a series of 19 roadside markers that highlight the U.S.7th Cavalry’s activities leading up to and immediately following the Battle of Little Bighorn. Download a detailed map at: http://www. southeastmontana.com/files/little-bighorn-trail-map.pdf. Traveling west from Forsyth, take Old Highway 10, which becomes Montana Highway 311, continue through Hysham (stop for a selfie with the statues at the Yucca Theater) on 311, and veer right when 311 turns to become Myers Road/ Highway 311. Cross the Yellowstone River on Myers Bridge – stop on the north side for a brief walk-about at Howrey Island Recreation Area – continue on Myers Road, which becomes Pease Bottom Road to Musselshell Trail Road south to I-90 in

Custer. To view Bighorn River Valley colors, backtrack east and take Highway 47 south to Hardin to I-90 or continue up the valley to Fort Smith and the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Battlefield Tour The five-mile ridgetop drive from Last Stand Hill to the Reno-Benteen Battlefield at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument reveals more fall-flaming 437 Exitundulating, prairies with the Wolf and Bighorn Mountain ranges in the distance. For a more enriched experience, continue east on highway 212 and turn south on Montana 314 to the Rosebud Battlefield State Park.

Fall does not mean closed

Several attractions continue with seasonal hours, and Pompeys Pillar National Monument is another great option for fall colors. Climb the 202 steps to the top of the pillar for an uninhibited 360-degree view of fall splendor along the Yellowstone River. With extended seasonal hours until Oct. 31, the Pompeys Pillar experience includes a short introductory video, interactive exhibits, dugout canoes that kids can climb into and William Clark’s signature carved into the rock in 1806 – the only remaining visible, physical evidence that the Corps of Discovery traversed this area.

Huntley Museum

Several other region museums are open year-round, including Big Horn County Museum, WaterWorks Art Museum, Range Riders Museum, Huntley Museum of Irrigated Agriculture, Carter County Museum, St. Labre Indian School Museum, O’Fallon Historical Museum and numerous Billings-area museums. Several others, like Prairie County Museum and Evelyn Cameron Gallery will open by appointment. Visit Southeast Montana, one of the state’s tourism regions, strives to increase visitation by increasing awareness of the region, showcasing cultural heritage, developing memorable experiences and educating residents about the economic benefits of tourism. The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would

become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

Pictograph Cave State Park

Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana. The Pictograph Cave site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, because of its archeological significance. Today's visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the mystery of this extraordinary site and tour the new visitor center. Prehistoric hunters who camped in Pictograph Cave left behind artifacts and over 100 pictographs, or rock paintings. The oldest rock art in the cave is over 2,000 years old. Their interpretations are still subject to debate. The images of animals, warriors and even rifles tell a story that has lasted thousands of years. The park's three main caves - Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost cave - were home to generations of prehistoric hunters. The caves were carved from the Eagle sandstone cliff by the forces of water and wind. The first recorded discovery of artifacts and paintings in the caves was made in 1936. Approximately 30,000 artifacts, ranging from stone tools, weapons, paintings and the instruments used, were excavated from the site. The pigments used in the rock art provide researchers to date when people inhabited the region and give insights into their lifestyle. The artifacts discovered allow researchers to pinpoint which native peoples used the caves and when they inhabited the region. The park has a pleasant 1/4 loop trail to the caves, with interpretative displays along the route identifying and explaining the natural features, the prehistoric paintings and vegetation found in the area. Pictograph Cave is the deepest of the three

main caves, at approximately 160 feet wide and 45 feet deep. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars to get a better view of the rock art. Allow at least an hour to enjoy the park, it's visitor center and trail. Also an excellent site for bird watching. There are picnic facilities available for day use only, but no camping is permitted. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the new Visitor Center's interpretive displays and gift shop. The park is 23 acres in size and 3,500 feet in elevation.

Sotelo to perform senior guitar recital at MSUB Performance is Nov. 8 in Cisel Hall

Asher Sotelo, a music education major at Montana State University Billings, will present his senior guitar recital on Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Cisel Recital Hall. Sotelo is very active in the MSU Billings Department of Music. He is a member of the Symphonic Band, Jackets Only a Capella, and is a founding member of the MSUB Guitar Ensemble. The music performed will include pieces by Ferdinand Carulli, J.S. Bach, Mir Ali, Giuseppe Farrauto, Narciso Yepes, and Daft Punk. Asher is a student of Elizabeth Adcock. The recital is free and open to the public. For more information about this recital or other programs, contact the Department of Music at 6572350.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reopened the Indian Fort fishing access site at Reed Point to motor vehicles Wednesday. The site closed to all but walk-in traffic in May after the Yellowstone River washed out part of the access road during high spring runoff. This past week, FWP crews were able to repair the washout enough to reopen the site to vehicles. About 200 yards of the access road still are too narrow for two vehicles to pass, so motorists will need to observe one-lane courtesies when meeting another vehicle entering or exiting the fishing access site. While the repaired roadway is wide enough to accommodate most vehicles, motorists will need to use their own best judgement when deciding whether they can safely tow trailers or drive large vehicles, such as some motorhomes, into the site. The repairs that allowed FWP to reopen the site to motor vehicles are temporary, so high water next spring or other factors may necessitate new restrictions or closures in the future. FWP originally planned a permanent fix to the washout, but construction was stalled because of questions about anticipated costs, expanding the current right-of-way and permits to work in the river. The temporary fix will allow people to use the popular fishing access site while those questions are debated.

FWP employees work this past week to widen and stabilize the access road at Indian Fort fishing access site, which was washed out by the Yellowstone River during spring runoff.
