7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Out of the Ashes: a belly dance fusion benefit show Presented by Tesseract Dance Collective. Out of the Ashes is a Mad Max themed dance production calling attention to child abuse: how to stop it, how to help and challenges us not to look away. It is about the survivors, emerging anew from something that has been ruined. Like the funeral pyre of the legendary Phoenix, children of abuse have to resurface from the ashes. Proceeds from the event will go to Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.). B.A.C.A. creates a safe environment for abused children, they stand with adolescents who have to face their offenders, a shield of honor to protect the innocent: their own personal bodyguards. For children who have been abused, the love and support from B.A.C.A can make a world of difference. Out of the Ashes will be from 7-9 p.m., November 9, at the Shrine Auditorium. The show is for 18 years and older. Tickets are $15 at the door or $12 pre-sale. For more information check out Tesseract Dance Collective on Facebook. Al Bedoo Shriners, 1125 Broadwater Ave

CHICAGO

2 p.m. Multi Tony® awarded CHICAGO is back in town, and it’s pure entertainment. With a legendary book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, CHICAGO is now the #1 longest-running American musical in Broadway history—and it still shows no sign of ever slowing down! Produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, CHICAGO earned six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. The national tour is directed by David Hyslop and choreographed by David Bushman. Walter Bobbie is the director of the original New York Production and Ann Reinking was the original choreographer in the style of Bob Fosse. CHICAGO features set design by John Lee Beatty,

costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Ken Billington and sound design by Scott Lehrer. The production also features orchestrations by Ralph Burns, supervising music direction by Rob Fisher. CHICAGO is a production not to be missed. Reviewers agree. Time Magazine calls it “A Triumph;” Newsweek raves “Smashing;” and Entertainment Weekly sums it up by calling CHICAGO “Broadway’s Most Electrifying Show.” Alberta Bair Theater 2722 3rd Ave. N www.albertabairtheater.org November 10-11

The Oak Ridge Boys Celebrate Christmas

For 30 years, Country Music Hall of Fame members The Oak Ridge Boys have been a part of their fans’ holiday seasons with their annual Christmas tour. This year, the Grammy Awardwinning group will play to sold out venues across America during the 2018 Celebrate Christmas tour, which takes the group to more than two dozen cities in 18 states throughout the U.S., November 14 through December 22. A mixture of traditional and contemporary songs—including religious, romantic and fun holiday tunes—makes up the set list, which includes songs from the Oaks’ six bestselling Christmas CDs. A highlight of the evening is the muchloved ‘rocking chair’ segment where each BOY rocks by the fireplace and shares personal thoughts about Christmas. “Christmas is my favorite time of year,” says Oaks’ lead singer, Duane Allen. “I love the positive things about the season.... the joy, happiness, giving, sharing, time with family, and gifts, the beautiful lights and decorations, Christmas music, special food, and most of all the true meaning, which, of course, is celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Every year I look forward to taking our Christmas tour all over the USA. I hope everyone will come out this year and celebrate Christmas with The Oak Ridge Boys.” Known for their iconic and multiplatinum selling hit “Elvira,” along

Made up of members Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban, whose unmistakable bass on the lyric “oom poppa, mow mow,” has become one of music’s most recognized singalongs on an international scale, The Oak Ridge Boys are members of the Grand Ole Opry and achieved arguably country music’s highest honor in October 2015 when they were inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. NOVA Center For The Performing Arts’ Youth Conservatory presents

THE MIKADO (sort of )

The Mikado (Sort of) will be performed November 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $16 for adults, $10 for students, seniors and military. The Mikado (Sort of) is based on the Gilbert and Sullivan production of the same name. This reimagining takes place in a galaxy far, far, away. Nanki-Who, son of the potentate of Mars-apan, The Mikado, fled his father’s imperial court to escape a forced marriage with Katisha, a not-so-attractive, elderly robot. Nanki-Who met and fell in love with Hum-Hum, a lovely young woman with two protective sisters. Hum-Hum, however, was already betrothed to her overlord, which forced Nanki-Who to contemplate leaving ZuZu-Who, once again, in despair. Boasting a talented cast filled with both new and familiar faces, The Mikado (Sort of) presents a rollicking and fresh look at the machinations of love and politics. Co-directed by Janie Sutton, DeLaney Hardy, and Ginger Roll, and stage managed by Kristin Mayer, this production is a not-to-be-missed treat with costumes and sets that will amuse and amaze, thanks to the creative and talented Glenda Brauneis. For more information or tickets contact NOVA Center for the Performing Arts at 406.591.9535, visit the box office, open noon-6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at 2317 Montana Avenue, Billings, or visit the website at www.novabillings.org.

Donate game meat

Local food pantries across the state are preparing to receive donations from the Hunters Against Hunger program. The program, a partnership between FWP and the Montana Food Bank Network, allows hunters to donate a portion or all of their legally harvested big game animals to be processed free of charge. The meat is then provided directly to a local food pantry in the area. Since its inception in 2014, over 130,000 pounds of meat has been donated through the program and distributed to Montanans struggling with food insecurity through 29 local food pantry sites. Meat is extremely expensive for food pantries to provide, yet a highly nutritious resource for their clients. “We have never in my time here had this much game. Truly a huge gift,” said Jill Holder, operations manager at Gallatin Valley Food Bank, about the impact of the program. Participation by local meat processors and hunters are the keys to success for this growing program. Big game donations (deer, elk, antelope, moose and wild buffalo) can only be accepted as part of the program by authorized participating meat processors set up around the state. Only legally harvested or confiscated big game animals can be donated. No road kill can be donated. A full list of authorized processors can be found at the Montana Food Bank Network website at mf bn.org/ hunters-against-hunger To offset the cost of processing, hunters purchasing a Montana hunting license are given the opportunity to make a monetary donation to this program. Additional donations to the program are being accepted by the Montana Food Bank Network.

MSU Billings Hispanic Tradition class to host free movie screening

Screening to occur Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. Montana State University Billings’ Hispanic Tradition class will be hosting a free screening of the 2017 documentary film, Dolores: Rebel, Activist, Feminist, Mother on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Art House Cinema, located at 109 North 30th Street in Billings. Dolores Huerta is among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century – and she continues the fight to this day, at 88. With intimate and unprecedented access to this mother of eleven children, the film reveals the personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change. The film is directed by Peter Bratt. This screening is free and open to the public. Sponsors include MSU Billings Department of English, Philosophy and Modern Languages, and MSU Billings Women and Gender Studies Center with community partner, Angela’s Piazza. Learn more about the film here. For more information about the event, contact Dr. Rebecca Berru Davis at (406) 657-2356 or rebecca.davis6@msubillings.edu.

Due to the speed at which the last event sold out, the Billings Depot has added two more shows to let even more children enjoy the event. The Polar Express will begin on Thursday, November 29 and run through Sunday, December 9. The price of tickets will be $26 per child, $18 per adult and $5 per infant under one year. This price includes all crafts, hot cocoa, cookies, Santa photo and book for each child. Tickets go on sale Monday, November 5 on the Billings Depot website: BillingsDepot.org.

NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, 6 p.m., December 9th, For over 60 years, A Child’s Christmas in Wales, a family recollection written by Dylan Thomas, one of the best known and loved poets of the 20th Century, has been as much a part of the Christmas pageant of stories and films as A Christmas Carol and ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, both published in the early 19th Century. Aside from the biblical story of the Nativity, few holiday-related works of literature can claim the distinction of being so universally loved and enjoyed, as well as embody the fundamental ideals the holiday represents. A Child’s Christmas in Wales is a joyful, memoir of Welsh traditions and family quirks, the humor and pathos of life in an ordinary community with extraordinary characters and charm. Like Under Milkwood, Dylan Thomas’s tale is a classic because, like its predecessors, including the story of the lowly birth the holiday celebrates, it encompasses and revels in the reality of the human condition. This delightful story is presented by NOVA, read by Welshman, and recently arrived Montana resident, Dulais Rhys, and includes a five minute, non-optional, compulsory, Welsh language lesson. Dulais has the unique experience of A Child’s Christmas in Wales reminding him of his own childhood and the audience is invited to join in the riotous fun. The presentation includes events in Dylan Thomas’s life and visits to the U.S., his work, as well as audio examples of the poet’s unique reading voice.

Country Store

The Polar Express is a family-favorite event based off the award-winning book and movie. This magical production for children of all ages begins when the kids arrive dressed in their pajamas. The kids receive hot chocolate and cookies, then eagerly snuggle up on a large red rug surrounding the stage where local actors reenact scenes from the story. At the appropriate point in the story, Santa arrives at the Depot on a train headed for the North Pole! Santa will come in to sing songs and take a photo with the children. Each child will receive a Christmas book to take home and share with the family. Kids will also have an opportunity to participate in a number of crafts, listen to a story, and take a ride around the Depot on our miniature train. Recommended ages for Polar Express are 3 to 8 years of age but of course, any child is welcome to participate.

This fall in Southeast Montana

Yard Office Rd.

As fall moves into full swing, Visit Southeast Montana tourism suggests a throwback activity; Sunday afternoon drives. “While fall in the mountains is spectacular, the prairies, buttes and breaks of Southeast Montana have their own beauty,” said marketing manager Brenda Maas. “Look to river valleys for the golden splendor of massive cottonwoods, but remember that the leaves on prairie grasses change, too. The mauve colors are amazing.” Maas suggests daybreak and dusk as ideal times for prairie “colors,” especially as they pertain to photography and wildlife watching. She offers the following sample routes for travelers and locals alike. Prairie Tour Montana Highway 7 from Wibaux to Baker to Ekalaka cuts across the rolling prairies of Southeast Montana. Be sure to stop at Medicine Rocks State Park for a closer look at the pictographs and petroglyphs from past centuries. See http://www.southeastmontana.com/medicine-rocks for more information.

Prairie Tour 2 The Warrior Trail, or what is locally known as the “212 Cutoff,” crosses both the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations and exemplifies the autumn beauty of Southeast Montana’s prairies. Just east of Ashland, the Custer National Forest surprises visitors with more jagged terrain, dotted with pines. For more details on recreation areas, see the Ashland Ranger District’s map at: https://www.fs.usda. gov/recarea/custergallatin/recarea/?recid=60823 Musselshell River Tour Follow MT Highway 12 from Ryegate to Roundup to Melstone, Ingomar and Forsyth. Stop at the RiverWalk in Roundup for a closer look and to stretch your legs. From Forsyth, follow the Yellowstone River tour but don’t forget to stop at a local shop for a bite to eat. Yellowstone River Middle Tour Montana Old Highway 10, which skirts between the Yellowstone River and I-90, features golden cottonwood colors and several stops along the Trail to the Little Bighorn, a series of 19 roadside markers that highlight the U.S.7th Cavalry’s activities leading up to and immediately following the Battle of Little Bighorn. Download a detailed map at: http://www. southeastmontana.com/files/little-bighorn-trail-map.pdf. Traveling west from Forsyth, take Old Highway 10, which becomes Montana Highway 311, continue through Hysham (stop for a selfie with the statues at the Yucca Theater) on 311, and veer right when 311 turns to become Myers Road/ Highway 311. Cross the Yellowstone River on Myers Bridge – stop on the north side for a brief walk-about at Howrey Island Recreation Area – continue on Myers Road, which becomes Pease Bottom Road to Musselshell Trail Road south to I-90 in

Custer. To view Bighorn River Valley colors, backtrack east and take Highway 47 south to Hardin to I-90 or continue up the valley to Fort Smith and the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Battlefield Tour The five-mile ridgetop drive from Last Stand Hill to the Reno-Benteen Battlefield at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument reveals more fall-flaming 437 Exitundulating, prairies with the Wolf and Bighorn Mountain ranges in the distance. For a more enriched experience, continue east on highway 212 and turn south on Montana 314 to the Rosebud Battlefield State Park.

Fall does not mean closed

Several attractions continue with seasonal hours, and Pompeys Pillar National Monument is another great option for fall colors. Climb the 202 steps to the top of the pillar for an uninhibited 360-degree view of fall splendor along the Yellowstone River. With extended seasonal hours until Oct. 31, the Pompeys Pillar experience includes a short introductory video, interactive exhibits, dugout canoes that kids can climb into and William Clark’s signature carved into the rock in 1806 – the only remaining visible, physical evidence that the Corps of Discovery traversed this area.

Huntley Museum

Several other region museums are open year-round, including Big Horn County Museum, WaterWorks Art Museum, Range Riders Museum, Huntley Museum of Irrigated Agriculture, Carter County Museum, St. Labre Indian School Museum, O’Fallon Historical Museum and numerous Billings-area museums. Several others, like Prairie County Museum and Evelyn Cameron Gallery will open by appointment. Visit Southeast Montana, one of the state’s tourism regions, strives to increase visitation by increasing awareness of the region, showcasing cultural heritage, developing memorable experiences and educating residents about the economic benefits of tourism. The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would

become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

Pictograph Cave State Park

Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana. The Pictograph Cave site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, because of its archeological significance. Today's visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the mystery of this extraordinary site and tour the new visitor center. Prehistoric hunters who camped in Pictograph Cave left behind artifacts and over 100 pictographs, or rock paintings. The oldest rock art in the cave is over 2,000 years old. Their interpretations are still subject to debate. The images of animals, warriors and even rifles tell a story that has lasted thousands of years. The park's three main caves - Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost cave - were home to generations of prehistoric hunters. The caves were carved from the Eagle sandstone cliff by the forces of water and wind. The first recorded discovery of artifacts and paintings in the caves was made in 1936. Approximately 30,000 artifacts, ranging from stone tools, weapons, paintings and the instruments used, were excavated from the site. The pigments used in the rock art provide researchers to date when people inhabited the region and give insights into their lifestyle. The artifacts discovered allow researchers to pinpoint which native peoples used the caves and when they inhabited the region. The park has a pleasant 1/4 loop trail to the caves, with interpretative displays along the route identifying and explaining the natural features, the prehistoric paintings and vegetation found in the area. Pictograph Cave is the deepest of the three

main caves, at approximately 160 feet wide and 45 feet deep. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars to get a better view of the rock art. Allow at least an hour to enjoy the park, it's visitor center and trail. Also an excellent site for bird watching. There are picnic facilities available for day use only, but no camping is permitted. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the new Visitor Center's interpretive displays and gift shop. The park is 23 acres in size and 3,500 feet in elevation.

CWD Check Stations Open on Hi-Line

Deer, elk and moose hunters need to remember the chronic wasting disease check stations on the Hi-Line and the meaning of the transportation restriction zone in northern Liberty County. Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 4 has CWD check stations set up in Chester and just north of Shelby on Interstate 15. Additional CWD check stations are being run in Region 6, as well as in Regions 2,3 and 5.

All hunters are required to stop at all check stations.

Because a CWD positive deer was taken in last fall north of Chester, any member of the deer family – which include mule and white-tailed deer, elk and moose – taken this year in Liberty County north of U.S. Highway 2 must have the head and spinal column removed before it can be taken out of Liberty, Hill and Toole counties. Generally, FWP Region 4 check station workers report good compliance from hunters in the area. CWD is a progressive, fatal neurological disease that effects deer, elk and moose. The disease has not been shown to spread to people, pets, livestock or wildlife outside of the deer family. However, the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend not consuming meat from an animal known to be infected with CWD. The CDC also recommends that hunters have deer tested if they were harvested in areas where CWD is known to be present.

Hunters can help prevent spread of AIS Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks reminds waterfowl hunters that they can help prevent aquatic invasive species from infesting Montana’s wetlands, rivers and lakes. The three steps of Clean, Drain, Dry greatly minimize the risk of spreading invasive species. Waterfowl hunters use gear that should be inspected before hunting in a new area. Waterfowl hunters should: Clean aquatic plants, animals, and mud from boat, trailer, waders, boots, decoys, decoy lines, and push poles. Drain water from decoys, boats, motors, and other hunting equipment. Brush hunting dogs and rinse off muddy paws. Never move plants from one body of water to another. When using vegetation to construct blinds or conceal duck boats, use only what is available in the immediate hunting area.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks photos FWP’s Indian Fort fishing access site at Reed Point is again open to motor vehicles after temporary repairs this week to the access road that was washed out by the Yellowstone River during spring runoff.

Indian Fort FAS reopened to vehicles Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reopened the Indian Fort fishing access site at Reed Point to motor vehicles Wednesday. The site closed to all but walk-in traffic in May after the Yellowstone River washed out part of the access road during high spring runoff. This past week, FWP crews were able to repair the washout enough to reopen the site to vehicles. About 200 yards of the access road still are too narrow for two vehicles to pass, so motorists will need to observe one-lane courtesies when meeting another vehicle entering or exiting the fishing access site. While the repaired roadway is wide enough to accommodate most vehicles, motorists will need to use their own best judgement when deciding whether they can safely tow trailers or drive large vehicles, such as some motorhomes, into the site. The repairs that allowed FWP to reopen the site to motor vehicles are temporary, so high water next spring or other factors may necessitate new restrictions or closures in the future. FWP originally planned a permanent fix to the washout, but construction was stalled because of questions about anticipated costs, expanding the current right-of-way and permits to work in the river. The temporary fix will allow people to use the popular fishing access site while those questions are debated.

Hunters’ watercraft must be inspected if: • You are coming into Montana from out of state. • You are traveling west over the Continental Divide into western Montana (the Columbia River Basin). • You are coming off Tiber or Canyon Ferry reservoirs. • You are launching anywhere within the Flathead Basin and your watercraft last launched on waters outside of the Flathead Basin. Many inspection stations are closed for the season, but FWP offers inspections at all FWP area and regional offices. For more information or to find an inspection station, visit CleanDrainDryMT.com or contact the FWP fisheries office at 406-444-2440.

FWP employees work this past week to widen and stabilize the access road at Indian Fort fishing access site, which was washed out by the Yellowstone River during spring runoff.
