The Oak Ridge Boys Celebrate Christmas

For 30 years, Country Music Hall of Fame members The Oak Ridge Boys have been a part of their fans’ holiday seasons with their annual Christmas tour. This year, the Grammy Awardwinning group will play to sold out venues across America during the 2018 Celebrate Christmas tour, which takes the group to more than two dozen cities in 18 states throughout the U.S., November 14 through December 22. A mixture of traditional and contemporary songs—including religious, romantic and fun holiday tunes—makes up the set list, which includes songs from the Oaks’ six bestselling Christmas CDs. A highlight of the evening is the muchloved ‘rocking chair’ segment where each BOY rocks by the fireplace and shares personal thoughts about Christmas. “Christmas is my favorite time of year,” says Oaks’ lead singer, Duane Allen. “I love the positive things about the season.... the joy, happiness, giving, sharing, time with family, and gifts, the beautiful lights and decorations, Christmas music, special food, and most of all the true meaning, which, of course, is celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Every year I look forward to taking our Christmas tour all over the USA. I hope everyone will come out this year and celebrate Christmas with The Oak Ridge Boys.” Known for their iconic and multiplatinum selling hit “Elvira,” along with other chart-toppers like “Bobbie Sue,” “Thank God For Kids,” and “Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight,” The Oak Ridge Boys have achieved a decorated career, winning five Grammy® Awards, and multiple CMA, ACM and Dove Awards for their cross-over brand of pop, country and gospel music that spans multiple generations. Made up of members Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban, whose unmistakable bass on the lyric “oom poppa, mow mow,” has become one of music’s most recognized singalongs on an international scale, The Oak Ridge Boys are members of the Grand Ole Opry and achieved arguably country music’s highest

honor in October 2015 when they were inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Alberta Bair Theater 2722 3rd Ave. N www.albertabairtheater.org December 7

Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

Hot Club of San Francisco

This ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Quintette du Hot Club de France. The HCSF borrows the instrumentation of violin, bass, and guitars from the original Hot Club while breathing new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist, Paul Mehling. Featuring the silken violin of twice GRAMMY® Award-winning Evan Price, the velvet vocals of Isabelle Fontaine, and a swinging rhythm section, the group never fails to surprise and delight. To hear the ensemble live or on any of their 13 albums is to be carried back to the tight, smoky jazz clubs of 1930’s Paris and to the refined lounge of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entranced audiences around the globe for over 25 years. Acoustic Guitar has hailed the group’s playing as “intricate, scorching and often brilliant.” With frequent national and international tours—from Iceland to Lincoln Center and the Monterey Jazz Festival—The Hot Club of San Francisco keeps this historic music fresh and alive. ZooMontana Receives Two Bison

ZooMontana is wrapping up construction on the new Valley Credit Union Bison Exhibit and plans to unveil it, and its residents, to a select few who have sponsored the exhibit. A grand opening to the public will be planned for the end of November. The exhibit is possible thanks to a generous gift from Valley Credit Union. CEO Darla Card is excited about their partnership with the Zoo. "Valley Credit Union is very pleased to be a part of helping ZooMontana grow by sponsoring the new Bison Exhibit. We are very excited for the arrival of these native Montana Bison and look forward to sharing this experience with the community and visitors of our wonderful zoo" said Card. The exhibit is several acres large and is adjacent to the Zoo's Homestead House, which currently houses the ZooSchool Preschool. Executive Director Jeff Ewelt is excited to bring the story of Bison to Billings. "Bison are such an iconic part of American history", Ewelt said. "They deserve to have their story told and we look forward to housing America's national mammal." ZooMontana recently welcomed in 1-year old Bert and 6-month-old Nellie, two native North American Bison. Bison are the heaviest land mammals in North America, topping the scales at over a ton. Despite their weight, they are incredibly agile and can run over 35 miles per hour. Bison were nearly wiped out in the 19th century after settlers slaughtered nearly 50 million of them, reducing the population to only a few hundred. Since then, the population has rebounded slightly to just over 500,000 animals.

NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, 6 p.m., December 9th,

For over 60 years, A Child’s Christmas in Wales, a family recollection written by Dylan Thomas, one of the best known and loved poets of the 20th Century, has been as much a part of the Christmas pageant of stories and films as A Christmas Carol and ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, both published in the early 19th Century. Aside from the biblical story of the Nativity, few holiday-related works of literature can claim the distinction of being so universally loved and enjoyed, as well as embody the fundamental ideals the holiday represents. A Child’s Christmas in Wales is a joyful, memoir of Welsh traditions and family quirks, the humor and pathos of life in an ordinary community with extraordinary characters and charm. Like Under Milkwood, Dylan Thomas’s tale is a classic because, like its predecessors, including the story of the lowly birth the holiday celebrates, it encompasses and revels in the reality of the human condition. This delightful story is presented by NOVA, read by Welshman, and recently arrived Montana resident, Dulais Rhys, and includes a five minute, non-optional, compulsory, Welsh language lesson. Dulais has the unique experience of A Child’s Christmas in Wales reminding him of his own childhood and the audience is invited to join in the riotous fun. The presentation includes events in Dylan Thomas’s life and visits to the U.S., his work, as well as audio examples of the poet’s unique reading voice.

This fall in Southeast Montana As fall moves into full swing, Visit Southeast Montana tourism suggests a throwback activity; Sunday afternoon drives.

“While fall in the mountains is spectacular, the prairies, buttes and breaks of Southeast Montana have their own beauty,” said marketing manager Brenda Maas. “Look to river valleys for the golden splendor of massive cottonwoods, but remember that the leaves on prairie grasses change, too. The mauve colors are amazing.”

Yard Office Rd.

Maas suggests daybreak and dusk as ideal times for prairie “colors,” especially as they pertain to photography and wildlife watching. She offers the following sample routes for travelers and locals alike. Prairie Tour Montana Highway 7 from Wibaux to Baker to Ekalaka cuts across the rolling prairies of Southeast Montana. Be sure to stop at Medicine Rocks State Park for a closer look at the pictographs and petroglyphs from past centuries. See http://www.southeastmontana.com/medicine-rocks for more information. Prairie Tour 2 The Warrior Trail, or what is locally known as the “212 Cut-off,” crosses both the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations and exemplifies the autumn beauty of Southeast Montana’s prairies. Just east of Ashland, the Custer National Forest surprises visitors with more jagged terrain, dotted with pines. For more details on recreation areas, see the Ashland Ranger District’s map at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/ custergallatin/recarea/?recid=60823 Musselshell River Tour Follow MT Highway 12 from Ryegate to Roundup to Melstone, Ingomar and Forsyth. Stop at the RiverWalk in Roundup for a closer look and to stretch your legs. From Forsyth, follow the Yellowstone River tour but don’t forget to stop at a local shop for a bite to eat. Yellowstone River Middle Tour Montana Old Highway 10, which skirts between the Yellowstone River and I-90, features golden cottonwood colors and several stops along the Trail to the Little Bighorn, a series of 19 roadside markers that highlight the U.S.7th Cavalry’s activities leading up to and immediately following the Battle of Little Bighorn. Download a detailed map at: http://www. southeastmontana.com/files/little-bighorn-trail-map.pdf. Traveling west from Forsyth, take Old Highway 10, which becomes Montana Highway 311, continue through Hysham (stop for a selfie with the statues at the Yucca Theater) on 311, and veer right when 311 turns to become Myers Road/ Highway 311. Cross the Yellowstone River on Myers Bridge – stop on the north side for a brief walk-about at Howrey Island Recreation Area – continue on Myers Road, which becomes Pease Bottom Road to Musselshell Trail Road south to I-90 in

Custer. To view Bighorn River Valley colors, backtrack east and take Highway 47 south to Hardin to I-90 or continue up the valley to Fort Smith and the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Battlefield Tour The five-mile ridgetop drive from Last Stand Hill to the Reno-Benteen Battlefield at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument reveals more fall-flaming 437 Exitundulating, prairies with the Wolf and Bighorn Mountain ranges in the distance. For a more enriched experience, continue east on highway 212 and turn south on Montana 314 to the Rosebud Battlefield State Park.

Fall does not mean closed

Several attractions continue with seasonal hours, and Pompeys Pillar National Monument is another great option for fall colors. Climb the 202 steps to the top of the pillar for an uninhibited 360-degree view of fall splendor along the Yellowstone River. With extended seasonal hours until Oct. 31, the Pompeys Pillar experience includes a short introductory video, interactive exhibits, dugout canoes that kids can climb into and William Clark’s signature carved into the rock in 1806 – the only remaining visible, physical evidence that the Corps of Discovery traversed this area. Several other region museums are open year-round,

Huntley Museum

including Big Horn County Museum, WaterWorks Art Museum, Range Riders Museum, Huntley Museum of Irrigated Agriculture, Carter County Museum, St. Labre Indian School Museum, O’Fallon Historical Museum and numerous Billings-area museums. Several others, like Prairie County Museum and Evelyn Cameron Gallery will open by appointment. Visit Southeast Montana, one of the state’s tourism regions, strives to increase visitation by increasing awareness of the region, showcasing cultural heritage, developing memorable experiences and educating residents about the economic benefits of tourism. The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis

and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

Pictograph Cave State Park

Pictograph Cave State Park is a place to contemplate the origins of human habitation in Montana. The Pictograph Cave site was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, because of its archeological significance. Today's visitors can enjoy a unique opportunity to explore the mystery of this extraordinary site and tour the new visitor center. Prehistoric hunters who camped in Pictograph Cave left behind artifacts and over 100 pictographs, or rock paintings. The oldest rock art in the cave is over 2,000 years old. Their interpretations are still subject to debate. The images of animals, warriors and even rifles tell a story that has lasted thousands of years. The park's three main caves - Pictograph, Middle, and Ghost cave - were home to generations of prehistoric hunters. The caves were carved from the Eagle sandstone cliff by the forces of water and wind. The first recorded discovery of artifacts and paintings in the caves was made in 1936. Approximately 30,000 artifacts, ranging from stone tools, weapons, paintings and the instruments used, were excavated from the site. The pigments used in the rock art provide researchers to date when people inhabited the region and give insights into their lifestyle. The artifacts discovered allow researchers to pinpoint which native peoples used the caves and when they inhabited the region. The park has a pleasant 1/4 loop trail to the caves, with interpretative displays along the route identifying and explaining the natural features, the prehistoric paintings and vegetation found in the area. Pictograph Cave is the deepest of the three

main caves, at approximately 160 feet wide and 45 feet deep. Visitors are advised to bring binoculars to get a better view of the rock art. Allow at least an hour to enjoy the park, it's visitor center and trail. Also an excellent site for bird watching. There are picnic facilities available for day use only, but no camping is permitted. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the new Visitor Center's interpretive displays and gift shop. The park is 23 acres in size and 3,500 feet in elevation.

CWD in deer in Liberty and Carbon counties

Second tests on tissue samples from a white-tailed buck harvested in southern Liberty County and a mule deer doe harvested within the CWD-positive area in Carbon County came back positive for chronic wasting disease. The lab at Colorado State University confirmed the tests. The whitetail in Liberty County was harvested in hunting district 400, but outside both the current CWD-positive area and the 2018 priority surveillance area, which includes the northern half of Liberty County. As a result, FWP expanded the CWD-positive area to include all of Liberty County. All of HD 400 is now included in the 2018 CWD surveillance effort. The suspect deer in HD 575 was harvested northeast of Joliet in a current CWD-positive area, which encompasses Carbon County, east of U.S. Highway 212 and the Roberts-Cooney Road. Information for hunters With FWP establishing all of Liberty County as a CWD positive area, hunters who harvest deer, elk or moose within the county must adhere to the established Transport Restriction Zone (TRZ) rules, which means hunters cannot move brain or spinal column tissue outside of the TRZ. Hunters harvesting a deer within the expanded Liberty County positive area are also encouraged to have their animals tested prior to consuming the meat. The TRZ for the Liberty County CWD positive area is all of Liberty, Hill and Toole Counties. Hunters also need to be aware that by expanding the priority surveillance efforts to include all of HD 400, FWP is relying on collecting more samples from the area to determine CWD prevalence among the deer population and potential distribution of the disease. This information is critical for FWP in developing a plan for managing the disease. HD 400 and neighboring HD 401 are unique in that they both have three-week deer seasons as opposed to the standard five-week season typical in the state. FWP would like hunters who harvest deer, elk or moose within the priority surveillance area, which includes the Hi-Line from the Blackfeet Reservation to the North Dakota border and HDs 210, 212 and 217 in western Montana, to submit the animals for CWD testing. This can be done by visiting surveillance area check stations, which are open on weekends, or by contacting or visiting the FWP regional office in Great Falls at 406-454-5840, Glasgow at 406-228-3700, Havre at 406-265-6177, Missoula at 406-542-5500, or Billings at 406247-2940 during the week. There currently is no convincing evidence that the agent of CWD affects humans. However, public health officials recommend that human exposure to the CWD agent be avoided as they continue to evaluate any potential risk. Research indicates that it is unlikely that direct transmission of CWD from infected animals to humans occurs. However, the similarities between CWD, mad cow disease, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease are cause for concern, and appropriate precautions should be taken with harvested animals. Hunters should not harvest animals that appear sick, nor should they eat meat from suspect animals. Animals that are suspected of having CWD should not be eaten. If you harvest an animal and are unsure whether it is safe to eat, contact your local FWP staff for guidance soon after the animal is harvested.

That’s what you get when you take a mother and daughter who describe themselves as “a couple of country gals who always loved sewing.” You’ll shop and sew in the midst of chatter and laughter. Their way of making quilting as fun for you as it is for them includes offering classes (one day or a series), helping you with fabric selections and quilting techniques, and offering open sewing times. Here for an extended stay? Come in and quilt! They have a huge selection of quilting supplies and sell finished quilts, too. They have masculine, Western and other theme favorites also. Judy Niemeyer Certified Shop, Batiks, and Anita Godesign Embroidery Cards. Brother and Nolting Long Arm Dealer, sewing machine repairs and antique sewing machine sales round out their offerings. Open Mon.-Sat. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. 406-6551001. Located next to West End Perkins behind King Town Center at 712 Carbon Street. “Come in and let us share our love of quilting with you!” www. backdoorquiltshoppe.com Spring Blossom Quilt N Sew Welcome to Spring Blossom Quilt N Sew.
