NOVA presents Blodwen In May of 2019, NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, in a co-production with Rimrock Opera Foundation in Billings, Montana, will premiere Joseph Parry’s Blodwen (the first Welsh opera) – yn Gymraeg! [in Welsh]. This will be the first staged performance of Blodwen in the United States and the first American company to produce an opera sung in Welsh. Composer Joseph Parry (1841-1903), was born in Wales and emigrated with his family to Danville, Pennsylvania, when he was twelve years old. As a musician, Parry rose to fame among immigrant Welsh communities and became equally wellknown and beloved on both sides of the Atlantic. Following the pattern of Romantic Italian opera, Blodwen takes place in 14th century Wales and includes a wedding, lovers, dying heroes and a dramatic final twist. The opera’s stirring music shows Parry at his dramatic best: heroic and romantic solos, exciting ensembles, powerful choruses and of course, the famous ‘Hywel a Blodwen’ love duet which remains popular as a concert item and is considered one of the highlights of amateur performances of the opera. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see a rare milestone in the history of Welsh-American music. Blodwen will be sung in Welsh with English super-titles on May 10, 11 and May 18, 19, 2019.

A multi-award-winning musician, the charismatic songstress is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music embodying the folk and mountain blues sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian hills of Kentucky mixed with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. With the power of her gospel singing African-American father’s voice and the determined spirit of her Cherokee/ Shawnee/Choctaw mother, Redbone broadens all boundaries of Americana. Her latest CD, The Garden of LoveSongs of William Blake, produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder/ Grammy Winner John McEuen is an unexpected twist – “a brilliant collision of cultures” (New Yorker) features Martha’s magnificent voice, Blake’s immortal words and a masterful cornucopia of roots music (folk, country, Piedmont blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul and traditional Southeastern Native American). Redbone and her long-term collaborator, pianist Aaron Whitby are called “the little engine that could” by their “band of NYC’s finest blues and
Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.
Western Room
Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.
American Indian Collection
A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. From grassroots beginnings with residencies at the original Living Room NYC, then Joe’s Pub and nationally at powwows across Indian Country in support of her debut album, Home of the Brave – “Stunning album, the kind of woman who sets trends” (Billboard) – Redbone has built a passionate fan base with her mesmerizing presence and explosive live shows. Her album Skintalk is described as the soulful sound of “Earth, Wind, and Fire on the Rez”(Native Peoples Magazine) and is recognized as an example of Contemporary Native American music in the Library Collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Tech Tips for Holiday Travel
(Family Features) As another busy travel season approaches, roadweary parents and families can hold on to holiday cheer a little longer by counting on tech as their preferred travel companion. Every year, tens of millions of travelers brave planes, trains and automobiles to celebrate year-end holidays and exchange goodwill with family and friends. Consider these ideas for using tech to make this year's travel a little easier.
Electronic Entertainment
Nearly every parent is wary of excess screen time, but holiday travel is a good time to set aside those concerns. Hours of chaotic travel, unfamiliar scenery and overall disruption to typical daily schedules can wreak havoc on kids. One way to keep those stressful feelings at bay is entertainment, and there are plenty of options that can serve as aides to keep kids calm and collected when travel gets tiresome. Handheld video games, portable DVD players and tablets can all be customized with kid-friendly content to make it from point A to point B with your sanity intact, or to simply enjoy an uninterrupted hour catching up with loved ones.
Savvy Smartphones
It's a trend on the rise: More than 70 percent of U.S. travelers responding to Google Consumer Insights agreed they "always" use their smartphones when traveling to research activities or attractions, locate shopping areas and restaurants, or look up directions. For value-conscious travelers, a smartphone like the Alcatel 7 offers robust talk time, nonstop streaming and lightning-fast charging. Up to 28 hours of talk time makes it ideal for connecting with family and friends down the street or around the globe, and after just 22 minutes of charging, it can be used for up to six hours. With more than 10 hours of nonstop streaming in a single charge, kids won't have to miss out on any social media stories or updates from their favorite vloggers while waiting for grandma's pecan pie to cool. Sleek and compact, the phone also features a large six-inch Full HD+ display and dual cameras that let you shoot in portrait mode. Learn more at alcatel7. com.
Give the gift of the Alberta Bair Theater Alberta Bair Theater has been a gathering place where family and friends have shared the excitement of the performing arts for more than 30 years. An ABT gift certificate, which equals cash at the ABT Box Office, is a great gift idea that can be purchased in any amount and redeemed for any show ticketed by Alberta Bair Theater, like An Evening With Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt on February 7, the electrifying music and dance show iLuminate on February 24 and Murphy’s Celtic Legacy that features acclaimed Irish dancer Chris Hannon and a cast of 30 on March 1. Take a look at AlbertaBairTheater.org to see all upcoming shows and then give the box office a call at (406) 256-6052. Although you can buy tickets on the website, gift certificates cannot be purchased online. The ABT Box Office is located at 2801 Third Ave N in Downtown Billings with convenient 10 minute free parking on Third Ave N and is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. , except for major holidays like Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Board of Directors, Staff, and Volunteers would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supports the performing arts by attending performances and donating to the Annual Fund Campaign, which supports operational needs of the theater. Sponsors continue to help bring quality performances to the stage. Be watching for upcoming announcements regarding the renovation that is scheduled to begin this Spring. With community by its side, Alberta Bair Theater will continue to be a source for world-class entertainment, a home for community performances, and a connection for education and conversation.
Deer shot with fishing arrow
Power Up
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is offering a reward of as much as $1,000 for information about a mule deer buck that was killed illegally with a fishing arrow over the weekend in a Lockwood residential area.
Connectivity Crashes
FWP game warden Connor Langel said someone shot the buck with a fishing arrow, which had string still attached, near Hemlock Lane northeast of the school complex in Lockwood. The deer was shot either late Sunday, Dec. 9, or early Monday morning, Langel said. The buck had six points on one side and a broken antler on the other. Those responsible for poaching the deer apparently did not try to retrieve any part of the deer.
You've heard the tongue-in-cheek adage that technology is great when it works. One thing is sure: it won't work if it isn't properly charged. Take time to lay out all your devices and their respective charging equipment before you pack your bags. Fully charge all devices, install new batteries and, when you're done, stash the cords and extra batteries in your carry-on bag where you can access them easily later. If you're planning to rely heavily on your tech devices while traveling, be sure you're aware of any potential connectivity issues that may limit your access to certain apps and features. Remember that in certain areas signals can be spotty. If there's essential info you may need, download it directly into your device so you can retrieve it with or without a good connection.
Protective Care
Away from home, you're likely to encounter situations and environments that put your family's tech devices in precarious places. Even a suitcase with liquid toiletries can pose a hazard, but a simple plastic bag can prevent damage from spills en route. Before you embark on your trip, also take steps to safeguard your tech devices with screen protectors and snug-fit covers or cases. #14561, Source: Alcatel
No laws nor seasons would allow hunting or shooting a deer in Lockwood over the weekend, Langel said. Anyone with information about the poaching is encouraged to call Langel at (406) 860-7805 or FWP’s 24-hour crime-reporting line at 1-800-TIP-MONT (800847-6668). Those who call with information leading to a conviction of the persons responsible for the illegal waste qualify for a cash reward of as much as $1,000.

Great Tips for an Outdoor Winter Adventure (StatePoint) There’s no need to resign yourself to the gym all winter long. Outdoor adventures are the perfect way to stay fit and have fun, even during the chilliest months of the year. All it takes to stay comfortable is the right gear and a bit of preparation. With that in mind, check out these tips for a great season. • Get an Early Start: Remember that winter means early sunsets. So, get your journey started early in the morning to take advantage of the limited sunlight. Plan your hike or other outdoor adventure carefully, knowing how long you expect it to take and be sure your pack includes a flashlight or headlamp. In the event you are still on the trail as the sun sets, you’ll be happy you did. • Stretch: Before getting started, be sure to give your muscles time to warm up. To avoid injury, it is always important to do a dynamic stretch workout before embarking on a workout, but it becomes especially important in cold weather. • Stay Informed: High-quality wearable tech is crucial for today’s outdoor enthusiast. Seek out a durable watch specifically designed to help you make the most of outdoor sports. The WSD-F20AGN from Casio, boasts a variety of popular outdoors and sports apps, including ViewRanger, Hole19, Ski Tracks, and more. Additional features include water resistance up to 50 meters, a digital compass, altimeter, barometer and an activity tracker. And with Wear OS by Google technology, you can use your timepiece to learn about your surroundings and support you in the things you want to do, for a safer, more connected journey.
Lets Go
Skiing How far to travel
• Cover Up: You may be working up heat but you’ll still want to keep your head, fingers and toes well-protected in cold weather temperatures. These are the areas of the body most vulnerable to frost bite. Select socks, gloves and a hat specifically designed for sports that offers moisture wicking, comfort and warmth. Be aware of the signs of frostbite and take care to get indoors at the earliest sign. This winter, don’t shy away from the great outdoors. A little preparation can help you make the most of an outdoor adventure.
Little Women
Billings, MT- Little Women, directed by Susan Hayes, will be performed Friday through Sunday, January 11-13 and January 18 -20. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 P.M. and the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $21 for adults, $16 for seniors and military, and $10 for students. The story of Little Women, Louisa M. Alcott's famous novel, is so well-known and so well-loved that it is hardly surprising that many attempts have been made to portray its characters on the stage. None has yet been so successful, however, as this brilliant dramatization by Peter Clapham. The structure of the play faithfully covers the theme of the novel, interweaving the lives of the March girls--Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy--and Laurie (the boy next door), as the audience follows them through a tumultuous year together. All the overtones of gaiety and the undertones of sadness are here, bringing the story completely to life in a way which is both accurate and dramatically satisfying. Every performer in the current production has read the book or seen the movie, which was their impetus for auditioning. The entire cast brings that passion for the story to the stage for this Rankin File production, celebrating the strength of women, an annual event at NOVA. Begin your 2019 with a live theater production that will make your New Year’s resolutions mean more than a promise. Bring the family and watch together the rich integrity, compassion, wisdom and humor of the March family. Little Women Performance Schedule January 11,12,13*, 18, 19, 20*, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.. 5 Tips for a Great Season of Winter Sports (StatePoint) It’s time to enjoy all your favorite winter sports. Whether you are traveling afar to hit the slopes or enjoying a close-to-home day of sledding and snow ball fights, it’s important to keep in mind that outdoor adventure in cooler weather requires preparation.
Here are five tips to help you best enjoy the season. 1. Dress for Warmth. Going on a ski weekend? Ice skating? To avoid exposure, ensure your clothes and accessories will stand up to the elements. They should be waterproof, windproof and durable, for maximize comfort, warmth and safety. 2. Use Tech Tools. Stay informed with wearable technology, such as the WSD-F30 Pro Trek Smart Outdoor Watch from Casio, which includes a compass, barometer and altimeter for outdoor adventures. The smart outdoor watch offers wearers the pertinent information needed for a safe and happy day of outdoor sports and adventure, including sunrise and sunset times. Apps such as Ski Tracks (which records your day on the slopes) are designed specifically for winter sports. 3. Stay Healthy. Just because the temperature is colder doesn’t mean you should skip on the important things you do to stay healthy at other times of the year. For example, drinking water and staying hydrated is important whenever you are
physically active. And while the days may be shorter, the sun can still be quite powerful, so keep using SPF on any exposed skin, and wear eye protection such as sunglasses designed for sports or goggles. 4. Consider Renting. Before investing in expensive, spaceconsuming equipment upfront, consider whether it’s more worthwhile to rent or buy these items. Factor in such details as how much use you will get out of the equipment each winter, the location of your upcoming trips, how you are getting there and how much storage space you have at home. 5. Prioritize Safety. Winter sports can be a lot fun, particularly when everyone stays safe and injury-free. Ensure that everyone in your family is properly fitted for safety equipment. For children, sizing may change year to year. Listen to the advice of any instructors you work with and always follow the directions and safety rules at the facility.

Destination: Out-School The term "Out-School" at the Montana Audubon Center refers to programs that are for kids and happen outside of school time. That includes our summer camps, of course, but also Afterschool Adventures in Nature, Discovery Day Camps (on Billings School District days off ), Homeschool Science, and our after-school mentor training program LINKS. We also love the term because it connects to our emphasis on OUTdoor play and learning -- the standard for all of our programs is 80% time outside. The way kids spend daytime hours when they're not in school can make a huge difference in their well-being and success. In most cases, we here at the Audubon Center would suggest those hours are filled with unstructured, outdoor play. But it is also true that many families just don't have access to outdoor spaces, or that having an older kid or adult mentor could make a big difference, or that parents need to hold intentional spaces in kids' schedules for outdoor experiences. What we do know is that most kids don't get outside on their own. And that's where the Out-School programs at the Audubon Center can help. Over the holiday break, we're offering a special Discovery Day Camp: Winter Survival. This camp will be held on Thursday, Dec 27th and Friday, Dec 28th from 7:45am - 4pm. Camps are for children in grades K-6, and the fee is $75/ camper. Back-to-back days are themed together but do not require students to register for both. Maximum 12 kids/session on a first-come, first-served basis. Scholarships available (email us!), 10% discount for members. The focus will be on how animals and humans survive during the winter and include plenty of outdoor play time. Activities to include: animal tracking, observing and exploring pelts/skulls, fort building, and hopefully a lot of sledding. Registration here!

This fall in Southeast Montana As fall moves into full swing, Visit Southeast Montana tourism suggests a throwback activity; Sunday afternoon drives.
“While fall in the mountains is spectacular, the prairies, buttes and breaks of Southeast Montana have their own beauty,” said marketing manager Brenda Maas. “Look to river valleys for the golden splendor of massive cottonwoods, but remember that the leaves on prairie grasses change, too. The mauve colors are amazing.” Maas suggests daybreak and dusk as ideal times for prairie “colors,” especially as they pertain to photography and wildlife watching. She offers the following sample routes for travelers and locals alike. Prairie Tour Montana Highway 7 from Wibaux to Baker to Ekalaka cuts across the rolling prairies of Southeast Montana. Be sure to stop at Medicine Rocks State Park for a closer look at the pictographs and petroglyphs from past centuries. See http://www.southeastmontana.com/medicine-rocks for more information. Prairie Tour 2 The Warrior Trail, or what is locally known as the “212 Cut-off,” crosses both the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations and exemplifies the autumn beauty of Southeast Montana’s prairies. Just east of Ashland, the Custer National Forest surprises visitors with more jagged terrain, dotted with pines. For more details on recreation areas, see the Ashland Ranger District’s map at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/ custergallatin/recarea/?recid=60823 Musselshell River Tour Follow MT Highway 12 from Ryegate to Roundup to Melstone, Ingomar and Forsyth. Stop at the RiverWalk in Roundup for a closer look and to stretch your legs. From Forsyth, follow the Yellowstone River tour but don’t forget to stop at a local shop for a bite to eat. Yellowstone River Middle Tour Montana Old Highway 10, which skirts between the Yellowstone River and I-90, features golden cottonwood colors and several stops along the Trail to the Little Bighorn, a series of 19 roadside markers that highlight the U.S.7th Cavalry’s activities leading up to and immediately following the Battle of Little Bighorn. Download a detailed map at: http://www. southeastmontana.com/files/little-bighorn-trail-map.pdf. Traveling west from Forsyth, take Old Highway 10, which becomes Montana Highway 311, continue through Hysham (stop for a selfie with the statues at the Yucca Theater) on 311, and veer right when 311 turns to become Myers Road/ Highway 311. Cross the Yellowstone River on Myers Bridge – stop on the north side for a brief walk-about at Howrey Island Recreation Area – continue on Myers Road, which becomes Pease Bottom Road to Musselshell Trail Road south to I-90 in
Custer. To view Bighorn River Valley colors, backtrack east and take Highway 47 south to Hardin to I-90 or continue up the valley to Fort Smith and the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Battlefield Tour The five-mile ridgetop drive from Last Stand Hill to the Reno-Benteen Battlefield at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument reveals more undulating, fall-flaming prairies with the Wolf and Bighorn Mountain ranges in the distance. For a more enriched experience, continue east on highway 212 and turn south on Montana 314 to the Rosebud Battlefield State Park.
Fall does not mean closed
Several attractions continue with seasonal hours, and Pompeys Pillar National Monument is another great option for fall colors. Climb the 202 steps to the top of the pillar for an uninhibited 360-degree view of fall splendor along the Yellowstone River. With extended seasonal hours until Oct. 31, the Pompeys Pillar experience includes a short introductory video, interactive exhibits, dugout canoes that kids can climb into and William Clark’s signature carved into the rock in 1806 – the only remaining visible, physical evidence that the Corps of Discovery traversed this area. Several other region museums are open year-round,
Huntley Museum
including Big Horn County Museum, WaterWorks Art Museum, Range Riders Museum, Huntley Museum of Irrigated Agriculture, Carter County Museum, St. Labre Indian School Museum, O’Fallon Historical Museum and numerous Billings-area museums. Several others, like Prairie County Museum and Evelyn Cameron Gallery will open by appointment. Visit Southeast Montana, one of the state’s tourism regions, strives to increase visitation by increasing awareness of the region, showcasing cultural heritage, developing memorable experiences and educating residents about the economic benefits of tourism. Bozeman Trail & Fort C. F. Smith
The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 18631866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.
Little Bighorn Battlefield
On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.
Fort Custer
Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest
Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Enjoy the gift shop and interpretive exhibits 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily May-Sept., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct.-April. Admission is $Adult- $6, Seniors-$5, Student & Active Military $3, and 6 & under is free. For information about the museum and the area call 406-665-1671 or visit bighorncountymuseum.org.

The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis
and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.
