Crampons Vs Snowshoes

Hiking still happens in the winter. When hiking in the winter, you have to think about your footwear differently than in the summer. Snow comes in different depths and ice can show up anywhere along the trail. It is good to know what to wear when you come to an obstacle. You have two main options in attachments for boots; crampons and snowshoes. Each one is for a special purpose and use.

Crampons

Crampons are fastened to the bottom on your boot and consist of jagged metal teeth. They are for providing traction on ice and hard packed snow. It is not recommended for soft or thick snow. They come in a variety of grades, type of teeth and methods of fastening for different hiking activities from glacier travel to mountaineering. When buying, ask your sales clerk about the different options and how to attach them correctly based on the brand. You might want to also look at ice axes if you are planning going up steep trails.

Snowshoes

If your trail is covered in deep, soft snow then snowshoes are what you want. They are wide frames with fabric, or straps, extending the frame that goes under and around your boot. They increase the service area your weight is distributed to on the snow, keeping you from sinking (postholing) in the snow, keeping your feet dry. They are also fastened around your boots. Snowshoes are for primarily hiking on flat surfaces and are not designed for going up or down steep inclines. With snowshoes, you want to have good walking poles to assist you in staying upright and moving. Ask your sales clerk for appropriate sizes and how to correctly fasten and use them.

Hot Club of San Francisco

This ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Quintette du Hot Club de France. The HCSF borrows the instrumentation of violin, bass, and guitars from the original Hot Club while breathing new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist, Paul Mehling. Featuring the silken violin of twice GRAMMY® Award-winning Evan Price, the velvet vocals of Isabelle Fontaine, and a swinging rhythm section, the group never fails to surprise and delight. To hear the ensemble live or on any of their 13 albums is to be carried back to the tight, smoky jazz clubs of 1930’s Paris and to the refined lounge of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entranced audiences

Our Town by NOVA presents Thornton Wilder Blodwen “Our Town,” by Thornton Wilder, will be performed Feb. 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, & 20. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 and the Sunday matinee will be at 2. Ticket prices are $21 for adults, $16 for seniors and military, and $10 for students. Described by Edward Albee as “…the greatest American play ever written,” Our Town follows the small town of Grover’s Corners through three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage,” and “Death and Eternity.” Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love and marry. The story, eventually, culminates in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre. Playwright, Thornton Wilder’s final word on how he wanted his play performed is an invaluable addition to the American stage and to the libraries of theatre lovers internationally. For more information contact NOVA Center for the Performing Arts at 406.591.9535. Or visit them at 2317 Montana Ave, Billings, MT 59101. Follow NOVA Center for the Performing Arts on Facebook. And check out their website at www.novabillings.org.

Little Women

“Little Women,” will be performed Friday through Sunday, January 11-13 and January 18 -20. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $21 for adults, $16 for seniors and military, and $10 for students at the NOVA Center The story of Little Women, Louisa M. Alcott's famous novel, is so well-known and so well-loved that it is hardly surprising that many attempts have been made to portray its characters on the stage. None has yet been so successful, however, as this brilliant dramatization by Peter Clapham. The structure of the play faithfully covers the theme of the novel, interweaving the lives of the March girls--Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy--and Laurie (the boy next door), as the audience follows them through a tumultuous year together. All the overtones of gaiety and the undertones of sadness are here, bringing the story completely to life in a way which is both accurate and dramatically satisfying. Every performer in the current production has read the book or seen the movie, which was their impetus for auditioning. The entire cast brings that passion for the story to the stage for this Rankin File production, celebrating the strength of women, an annual event at NOVA. Begin your 2019 with a live theater production that will make your New Year’s resolutions mean more than a promise. Bring the family and watch together the rich integrity, compassion, wisdom and humor of the March family. Little Women Performance Schedule January 11,12,13*, 18, 19, 20*, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.. Sunday matinee at *2 p.m. only.

In May of 2019, NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, in a co-production with Rimrock Opera Foundation in Billings, Montana, will premiere Joseph Parry’s “Blodwen (the first Welsh opera) – yn Gymraeg! [in Welsh].” This will be the first staged performance of Blodwen in the United States and the first American company to produce an opera sung in Welsh. Composer Joseph Parry (1841-1903), was born in Wales and emigrated with his family to Danville, Pennsylvania, when he was twelve years old. As a musician, Parry rose to fame among immigrant Welsh communities and became equally wellknown and beloved on both sides of the Atlantic. Following the pattern of Romantic Italian opera, Blodwen takes place in 14th century Wales and includes a wedding, lovers, dying heroes and a dramatic final twist. The opera’s stirring music shows Parry at his dramatic best: heroic and romantic solos, exciting ensembles, powerful choruses and of course, the famous ‘Hywel a Blodwen’ love duet which remains popular as a concert item and is considered one of the highlights of amateur performances of the opera. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see a rare milestone in the history of Welsh-American music. Blodwen will be sung in Welsh with English super-titles on May 10, 11 and May 18, 19, 2019.

Snowshoeing In Yellowstone

Welcome! Visitor’s Guide – 11

Under a blanket of snow, Yellowstone’s landscape is transformed, and so is the park experience. From photography to wildlife watching and geyser gazing, any familiar activity can seem new and different in the wintertime. What you choose to wear on your feet in winter may also allow you to see and do things in Yellowstone you might otherwise miss. “Snowshoes let you get out of your car and explore more of the park—maybe discover a small waterfall or wander through a forested area looking for birds,” says Yellowstone Forever Institute instructor Julianne Baker, who will co-lead the Institute’s newest field seminar this winter: Yellowstone by Ski or Snowshoe. “It’s a fun and convenient way to tour the park on scenic trails, even when the snow is deep,” says Baker. “Like walking, it’s easy to balance while carrying binoculars or a camera, and it’s easy to make sudden stops to look around or take photos.”

surrounding Old Faithful, are particularly enchanting during the wintertime. “The juxtaposition of colorful hot springs, steam, and cold snow is incredible and well worth braving the cold weather to see,” says Baker. Baker offers a few tips for beginners, including the use of poles to help with balance and starting out simple by staying on groomed trails before venturing off into parts unknown. Also, the most basic etiquette rule to remember is to avoid snowshoeing directly on ski tracks.

If you’ve never been on snowshoes before and are intimidated by the prospect, Baker says don’t be. “If you can walk, you can snowshoe.” She explains that there’s a very small learning curve compared to cross-country skiing, and most people quickly find snowshoes easy to maneuver. Many Yellowstone trails are groomed for skiing and snowshoeing throughout the winter season, including some boardwalks. Thermal areas, such as the Upper Geyser Basin

Before You Go

If you don’t have your own snowshoes you can rent them at the Bear Den Ski Shop in either Mammoth or Old Faithful. Some shops in gateway communities also offer rentals. Inquire at the Ski Shop about current trail conditions and whether trails that interest you require a shuttle drop-off. You can also get ski shuttle information at ynplodges.com/skiing. Wear waterproof, lace-up boots that fit well but provide room to wiggle your toes even with thick socks. Be prepared for changing weather conditions. Bring a pack with warm layers, extra gloves, and sunscreen. Also bring extra water - snowshoeing can be vigorous exercise.

Martha Redbone Roots Project Alberta Bair Theater’s Orser Outstanding Performances Series resumes on Friday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m. with multi-award winning Martha Redbone Roots Project. Martha Redbone, a charismatic songstress and vital voice in American Roots music, is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music embodying the folk and mountain blues sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian hills of Kentucky mixed with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. With the power of her gospel singing African-American father’s voice and the determined spirit of her Cherokee/ Shawnee/Choctaw mother, Redbone broadens all boundaries of Americana. Redbone’s latest CD, The Garden of Love- Songs of William Blake, produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder/Grammy Winner John McEuen, is “a brilliant collision of cultures,” says New Yorker Magazine. It features Redbone's magnificent voice, Blake's immortal words, and a masterful cornucopia of roots music (folk, country, Piedmont blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul and traditional Southeastern Native American). Redbone and her long-term collaborator, pianist Aaron Whitby are called “the little engine that could” by their band, some of NYC’s finest blues and jazz musicians. From grassroots beginnings with residencies at the original Living Room NYC, then Joe’s Pub and nationally at powwows across Indian Country in support of her debut album, Home of the Brave – “Stunning album, the kind of woman who sets trends” (Billboard) – Redbone has built a passionate fan base with her mesmerizing presence and explosive live shows. Her album Skintalk is described by Native Peoples Magazine as the soulful sound of “Earth, Wind and Fire on the Rez” and is recognized as an example of Contemporary Native American music in the Library Collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. This performance by Martha Redbone Roots Project is sponsored by Eileen Orser, KULR 8, and Upstream Media/ Hot 101.9. Tickets, $42, $27 and $22 for students with valid I.D., are available at the Alberta Bair Theater Box Office on the corner of 3rd Ave N and N Broadway, by phone at 406256-6052 (box office hours are Monday through Friday, 10-5; Saturday 10-3) and/or online at www.albertabairtheater.org. Alongside her career as a recording artist and songwriter Martha Redbone has maintained a steady involvement with

causes she believes in. Ms. Redbone is contracted by The Department of Indian Education- Louisiana, LaFourche Parish and teaches Southeastern Traditional Singing Workshop for the United Houma Nation’s Bayou Healers Cultural Enrichment Camp program. Redbone guest lectures on subjects ranging from Indigenous rights to the role of the arts in politics and Native American Identity at many institutions including New York University, the University of Michigan and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, to name a few. Redbone includes workshops and motivational talks with grade school children as part of her touring schedule on numerous reservations including Red Lake, MN, Cherokee, NC, Yuma AZ and Menominee, WI, among others. An exemplary ambassador for both Native and AfricanAmerican Youth for the National HIV/Aids Partnership, she was awarded the Red Ribbon Award for Outstanding Leadership presented on World AIDS Day at the United Nations in 2005. After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the communities of the United Houma Nation on the Gulf Coast, Martha single-handedly helped generate publicity that raised more than $30,000. Redbone also performed with Bonnie Raitt and the late Floyd Red Crow Westerman and helped raise over $130,000 in scholarships for the Heart of the Earth Foundation where 12 outstanding Native American students who have overcome adversity receive full tuition to study in higher education. Currently Martha advocates for Why Hunger’s Artists Against Hunger and Poverty program which raises and awareness of poverty and hunger in the United States, with particular attention to Appalachia in Martha’s instance. Redbone supports the Man Up Campaign, the global youth movement to eradicate violence against women and girls for whom she served as the indigenous affairs consultant and creative advisor. She is particularly proud of her accomplishment in having the Campaign’s Board of Directors include an Indigenous North American contingent (independent of the USA) to the roll call of 50 countries taking part in their Youth Leadership Summit held at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Redbone is currently an Advisory Board member of The Carlisle Indian School Project.

What to do in Winter

We are happy to provide programs year-round at the Montana Audubon Center. In fact, January and February are nearly as busy as other times of the year for public programs, field trips, and of course Fledglings Nature Preschool. We are more vigilant about safety and preparation in these months. But we also know that getting outside when the weather makes it more complicated is just as fun, and just as important. One of our high school program participants even said that their favorite part of the day was “being in the cold.” Check out our program calendar for all of our upcoming opportunities to take advantage of the season. Everything from after-school and family programs to full-moon walks and a (slightly cozier) Sip and Sketch workshop.

Five suggestions for winter:

Explore snow! Take a magnifying glass outside and look at all the amazing snowflake shapes. Catch a few on your sleeve or brush fallen snow onto a dark surface. Go birding. Winter is great for beginning birders -- the birds don’t move as much, there are no pesky leaves in the way, and fewer species makes it easier to master your own list. Bird feeders see lots of action in the winter, so remember to keep it full and you can enjoy the view from indoors, as well. Use Montana eBird to keep track of what you see. Slide down a hill. Find yourself some skis, a hard plastic sled, a piece of cardboard (go the extra mile and add some candle wax or cooking spray to the bottom)...get creative! Snow forts come in all shapes and sizes. We love this snow fort construction guide from the Wall Street Journal (!) a few weeks ago. If you’re really hard core, find inspiration in this (dated but awesome) video about igloo construction. Start a nature journal. The clean shapes and muted colors of winter provide are great for practicing lines, negative spaces, shadows, and shading. Plus its an excuse to bundle up and look out the window. Feeling especially intimidated by the combination of kids and winter weather? This recent article from Outside Magazine featured a highly relatable story about family adventuring, along with some great hints.

Huntley Project Museum

Universal Accessibility It is the goal to make the museum accessible to everyone. Public restrooms, located in the main building, are fully accessible. Pioneer boardwalk town and main building are fully accessible. The ten-acre campus is on flat ground with boardwalks and grass paths. Please call with any special arrangement requests.

The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture tells the unique story of the Huntley Irrigation Project. With 10.4 acres, 18 homestead buildings, hundreds of farm implements, and thousands of other artifacts on display, the Museum interprets, preserves restores and portrays life on the Project from the early 1900s to the late 20th century. The display at Osborn Park has one of the largest collections of horse-drawn machinery, early sugar beet equipment, corn, grain and hay mowers. Other displays include a tar paper shack, 2 school houses, an early day doctor’s office, bank, and a horse barn made from sawed cottonwood. The Huntley Irrigation Project was the fifth U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project in the United States and opened June 26th, 1907. Staff gives custom guided tours year-round! From Labor Day until Memorial Day the museum is open from Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Expanded hours after Memorial Day for the summer. Summer hours are 9 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week. Tours Daily tours generally last 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. Staff can do an abbreviated tour for inclement weather or time constraints. Several times a year there are special tours. Visit in October for a haunted tour and in December for a candlelight tour. The museum also does group tours and school tours. Please call to schedule your tour today! The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis

and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Enjoy the gift shop and interpretive exhibits 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily May-Sept., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct.-April. Admission is $Adult- $6, Seniors-$5, Student & Active Military $3, and 6 & under is free. For information about the museum and the area call 406-665-1671 or visit bighorncountymuseum.org.

Historic District

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. The District earned a listing on the National Historic Register in 1984. Call 406-629-0134 to schedule a walking tour. The Historic Preservation Office is in the depot.
