Jennifer Eli French unveils exhibit
“This Vibrant, Tarnished World” on display Jan. 16-Feb. 21. The Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University Billings is pleased to present Jennifer Eli French's “This Vibrant, Tarnished World” beginning January 16. “This Vibrant, Tarnished World” is an installation created in response to the novel, Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel. The exhibition is French's intricate, personal interpretation of the futuristic novel, Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. A series of lectures, films, and book discussions will continue through February as a part of a community-wide celebration of the novel through the NEA Big Read. In a mobile society, the things that we choose to preserve and carry become sacred. In Station Eleven, these cherished objects represent memory and longing for lost people, technologies, and ‘the sweetness of life on Earth’. “This Vibrant, Tarnished World” is a mixed media installation created by Billings artist Jennifer Eli French in response to the themes of nostalgia and longing in Station Eleven. Incorporating found objects, wire, polymer clay, acrylic paint, and a carousel slide projector, French’s ‘relics from the future’ depict objects submerged in the ocean of time, encrusted with natural growths and detritus of a lost civilization. Born in Colorado, Jennifer Eli French moved frequently while growing up but always spent summers on her family ranch in Montana. After attending high school in England, she earned a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. She returned to live and work in Montana in 2013. French derives inspiration from the worlds of Medieval art, Victoriana, the Western landscape, and “the strange beauty she finds in the darker corners of history” to create her intricately painted skulls, surreal paintings, and installations. She is represented by the Stapleton Gallery in Billings. French’s exhibit will be on display until February 21. Both the reception and Conversation with the Artist are free and open to the public. The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts building on the Montana State University Billings campus. Parking on the campus is free after 5 p.m. For more information visit www.msubillings.edu/gallery or www.facebook.com/northcuttsteelegallery. Hot Club of San Francisco
This ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Quintette du Hot Club de France. The HCSF borrows the instrumentation of violin, bass, and guitars from the original Hot Club while breathing new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist, Paul Mehling. Featuring the silken violin of twice GRAMMY® Award-winning Evan
Price, the velvet vocals of Isabelle Fontaine, and a swinging rhythm section, the group never fails to surprise and delight. To hear the ensemble live or on any of their 13 albums is to be carried back to the tight, smoky jazz clubs of 1930’s Paris and to the refined lounge of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entranced audiences around the globe for over 25 years. Acoustic Guitar has hailed the group’s playing as “intricate, scorching and often brilliant.” With frequent national and international tours—from Iceland to Lincoln Center and the Monterey Jazz Festival—The Hot Club of San Francisco keeps this historic music fresh and alive. Anglers should practice safety
Ice fishing is a great winter activity that the entire family can enjoy. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reminds anglers that safety should be the number one concern during a day out on the ice. Anglers should be familiar with the water body they plan to fish. The safest ice anglers are those who pay as much attention to the changing conditions of the ice as they do to the fishing conditions. When on the ice, remember: • If you have even the slightest doubt about the safety of the ice; stay off it. No fish is ever worth a fall into frigid water. • Blue ice is usually hard. Watch out for opaque, gray, dark or porous spots in the ice that could be weak, soft areas. Ice also tends to thin more quickly at the shorelines. • Watch for pressure ridges. These are areas of open water or thin ice where the ice has cracked and heaved due to expansion from freezing. • Test the ice ahead of you with an ice spud bar or an auger. • Don’t leave children unsupervised on the ice. • Lakes and ponds do not freeze at the same thickness all over. • Moving water, rivers, streams and springs, weaken ice by wearing it away from underneath. Avoid ice on rivers and streams, or where a river or stream enters a lake, pond or reservoir. • The least safe ice usually occurs early and late in the season, when the weather is warmer. The following are MINIMUMS needed with ice thickness: • 4 inches: 1 person with gear5 inches: small group spread out • 6 inches: snowmobile or ATV • 9 inches: small automobile* • 12 inches: pickup truck or SUV* • *not recommended, but if you must, proceed at your own risk! Some other common ice-safety reminders to keep in mind include: • Dress warm and waterproof to help prevent frostbite and hypothermia. • Consider changes in the weather (and ice conditions) during the prior 24 hours. • It's OK to wear a life jacket (PFD) or carry a throwable floatation device while out on the ice — safe ice-anglers do it all the time. • Before you head from home, tell someone where you plan to fish and when you plan to return. • Carry a pair of ice picks (long spikes on a heavy string around your neck). If you break through the ice, you can use the spikes to grip the ice and pull yourself out of the water. FWP wishes all anglers a safe, adventurous, and successful ice fishing season!
NOVA presents Blodwen
In May of 2019, NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, in a co-production with Rimrock Opera Foundation in Billings, Montana, will premiere Joseph Parry’s “Blodwen (the first Welsh opera) – yn Gymraeg! [in Welsh].” This will be the first staged performance of Blodwen in the United States and the first American company to produce an opera sung in Welsh. Composer Joseph Parry (1841-1903), was born in Wales and emigrated with his family to Danville, Pennsylvania, when he was twelve years old. As a musician, Parry rose to fame among immigrant Welsh communities and became equally well-known and beloved on both sides of the Atlantic. Following the pattern of Romantic Italian opera, Blodwen takes place in 14th century Wales and includes a wedding, lovers, dying heroes and a dramatic final twist. The opera’s stirring music shows Parry at his dramatic best: heroic and romantic solos, exciting ensembles, powerful choruses and of course, the famous ‘Hywel a Blodwen’ love duet which remains popular as a concert item and is considered one of the highlights of amateur performances of the opera. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see a rare milestone in the history of Welsh-American music. Blodwen will be sung in Welsh with English super-titles on May 10, 11 and May 18, 19, 2019.

Historic locations in Billings? There’s a site for that History buffs can go back to the future the next time they want to tour historic downtown Billings. www. walkhistoricbillings.com Employing 21st century technology for a better understanding of the past, a free website with a tour of historic downtown Billings has been created through a partnership between the Yellowstone Historic Preservation Board and Western Heritage Center. The website must be opened on a smartphone or other mobile devices such as iPads and iPods. www. walkhistoricbillings.com Western Heritage Center Executive Derector Kevin Kooistra said the walking tour of downtown Billings needed to be updated and the Historic Preservation Board decided to go with a website. After visting the web page on a mobile device, a person can use the map of downtown Billings with teardrop-shaped icons marking older buildings. Touch an icon and up pops the history of the building and description of the architectural style, as well as factoids and quotes from period publications. Kooistra writes in his description of the Montana Power Building at 113 North Broadway, “The Montana Power Company five-story landmark, completed in 1916, was the tallest building on the Billings’ skyline for years. The Billings Gazette commented, in 1916, ‘from the standpoint of electrical illumination [the Montana Power Building is] one of the most striking buildings in the country.’ The building cost a staggering $250,000 and became a centerpiece of North Broadway.” Kooistra also dug up gems from Billings’ brush with celebrity.
In the description for the Babcock Theatre, 2808 Second Avenue North, Kooistra writes, “Political VIPs Theodore Roosevelt, Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryan all spoke from the Babcock stage, while Ethel Barrymore and David Warfield and many others performed in theater productions.” Other building biographies show the local impact of national issues. In the description of the Carlin Hotel, 2501 Montana Avenue, Kooistra tells of a prohibition drama worthy of its own episode on HBO. “The Carlin Hotel was the site of a federal sting operation that netted Billings’ Mayor Arthur Trenerry and Mrs. A.M. Leach, the lessee, for violating Prohibition laws. The hotel had a reputation as a place for handling liquor. Trenerry was accused of providing drinks and promising police protection for an illegal bootlegging operation. At their trial, the Mayor claimed he was set up. After 17 hours of deliberation, with the defense making the case that federal officers framed the Mayor to satisfy a personal grudge, the jury found Trenerry and Leach innocent of the charge of conspiring to violate the prohibition law.” According to Kooistra’s research, the metropolis that sprang up at the foot of the rimrocks was a beautiful — and tough — city. Kooistra included references that he consulted in his research so web page users can find more information about the buildings. Kooistra welcomes comments or additional information. The website project was paid for by a $2,000 state historic preservation grant.

What to do in Winter
We are happy to provide programs year-round at the Montana Audubon Center. In fact, January and February are nearly as busy as other times of the year for public programs, field trips, and of course Fledglings Nature Preschool. We are more vigilant about safety and preparation in these months. But we also know that getting outside when the weather makes it more complicated is just as fun, and just as important. One of our high school program participants even said that their favorite part of the day was “being in the cold.” Check out our program calendar for all of our upcoming opportunities to take advantage of the season. Everything from after-school and family programs to full-moon walks and a (slightly cozier) Sip and Sketch workshop.
Five suggestions for winter:
Explore snow! Take a magnifying glass outside and look at all the amazing snowflake shapes. Catch a few on your sleeve or brush fallen snow onto a dark surface. Go birding. Winter is great for beginning birders -- the birds don’t move as much, there are no pesky leaves in the way, and fewer species makes it easier to master your own list. Bird feeders see lots of action in the winter, so remember to keep it full and you can enjoy the view from indoors, as well. Use Montana eBird to keep track of what you see. Slide down a hill. Find yourself some skis, a hard plastic sled, a piece of cardboard (go the extra mile and add some candle wax or cooking spray to the bottom)...get creative! Snow forts come in all shapes and sizes. We love this snow fort construction guide from the Wall Street Journal (!) a few weeks ago. If you’re really hard core, find inspiration in this (dated but awesome) video about igloo construction. Start a nature journal. The clean shapes and muted colors of winter provide are great for practicing lines, negative spaces, shadows, and shading. Plus its an excuse to bundle up and look out the window. Feeling especially intimidated by the combination of kids and winter weather? This recent article from Outside Magazine featured a highly relatable story about family adventuring, along with some great hints.

Huntley Project Museum
Universal Accessibility It is the goal to make the museum accessible to everyone. Public restrooms, located in the main building, are fully accessible. Pioneer boardwalk town and main building are fully accessible. The ten-acre campus is on flat ground with boardwalks and grass paths. Please call with any special arrangement requests.
The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture tells the unique story of the Huntley Irrigation Project. With 10.4 acres, 18 homestead buildings, hundreds of farm implements, and thousands of other artifacts on display, the Museum interprets, preserves restores and portrays life on the Project from the early 1900s to the late 20th century. The display at Osborn Park has one of the largest collections of horse-drawn machinery, early sugar beet equipment, corn, grain and hay mowers. Other displays include a tar paper shack, 2 school houses, an early day doctor’s office, bank, and a horse barn made from sawed cottonwood. The Huntley Irrigation Project was the fifth U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project in the United States and opened June 26th, 1907. Staff gives custom guided tours year-round! From Labor Day until Memorial Day the museum is open from Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Expanded hours after Memorial Day for the summer. Summer hours are 9 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week. Tours Daily tours generally last 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. Staff can do an abbreviated tour for inclement weather or time constraints. Several times a year there are special tours. Visit in October for a haunted tour and in December for a candlelight tour. The museum also does group tours and school tours. Please call to schedule your tour today! The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis
and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

Bozeman Trail & Fort C. F. Smith
The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 18631866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest
Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop.
