Billings-area hunter education classes set
Eight week-long hunter education classes are scheduled in the Billings area for February and March. Certified volunteers will teach the free Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks classes, which are required for most people to hunt in Montana. Online registration for the classes is encouraged. Students may register online at the Montana FWP web site – http://fwp. mt.gov and follow the links to education, “hunter education programs” and “find a class.” Students must be at least 10 years old to register. Students younger than 18 years old must bring a parent or guardian to the orientation and registration session. All classes include a 6:30 p.m. registration and orientation session – which is required for all students, including those who have registered online – five evenings of classes and a Saturday outdoor field exercise. Here is a list of spring hunter education classes in the Billings area: • Castle Rock and Lewis and Clark middle schools: Orientation Monday, Feb. 18; classes Feb. 25 through March 1 with a field day at Lake Elmo State Park March 2. • Shepherd Elementary, Lockwood Middle School and Riverside Middle School: Orientation Monday, Feb. 25; classes March 4-8 with a field day at Lake Elmo State Park March 9. • Laurel High School: Orientation Monday, March 4; classes March 11-15 and a field day March 16 with the venue to be announced during orientation. • Medicine Crow and Will James middle schools: Orientation Monday, March 11; classes March 18 through 22 with a field day at Lake Elmo State Park March 23. Additional classes will be scheduled at towns throughout south central Montana this spring. Residents of towns outside of Billings should watch bulletin boards at local schools or check FWP’s website at http://fwp.mt.gov and follow the links to education, “hunter education programs” and “find a class.” Mandatory field exercises for adult students who complete an online hunter education course will be scheduled for later in the year with registration information posted on the FWP website. Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1985, must complete a hunter education class or qualify as a youth apprentice hunter before purchasing a Montana hunting license.

5 p.m. – 9 p.m. ArtWalk Downtown Billings began in 1994 when a group of visionary folks created a recurring event that highlighted the ever-growing community of artists and art galleries in downtown Billings. In 2016, ArtWalk became affiliated with the Downtown Billings Alliance. ArtWalk begins its 24th Season in April 2018. All ArtWalk events are free to the public. The events are organized and paid for by Season Members, OneTime Participants, and generous Sponsors. Featured artists frequently attend. Food and beverages are often served and live music offered. In addition to the many fine arts and fine crafts offered for sale, ArtWalk has grown to include opportunities to make art, gallery talks, dance and theatre performances. Host sites include galleries, art studios, businesses, a downtown Billings church, non-profit entities, restaurants, and other venues who value the creative spirit that thrives in downtown Billings. ArtWalk is “weather-resistant.” We don’t cancel our events for rain, thunder or hailstorms in the summer. Nor do we cancel if there are blizzards and below zero temperatures in the winter. Hot Club of San Francisco
This ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Quintette du Hot Club de France. The HCSF borrows the instrumentation of violin, bass, and guitars from the original Hot Club while breathing new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist, Paul Mehling. Featuring the silken violin of twice GRAMMY® Award-winning Evan Price, the velvet vocals of Isabelle Fontaine, and a swinging rhythm section, the group never fails to surprise and delight. To hear the ensemble live or on any of their 13 albums is to be carried back to the tight, smoky jazz clubs of 1930’s Paris and to the refined lounge of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entranced audiences around the globe for over 25 years. Acoustic Guitar has hailed the group’s playing as “intricate, scorching and often brilliant.” With frequent national and international tours—from Iceland to Lincoln Center and the Monterey Jazz Festival—The Hot Club of San Francisco keeps this historic music fresh and alive. Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.
Western Room
Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.
American Indian Collection
A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale Presents
Motown Magic The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale (BSO&C) presents Motown Magic, Saturday, February 2. Motown Magic features Broadway stars Sydney Morton and Jarran Muse along with the Skyview Chorale and the Skyview Chamber Choir, performing hits from esteemed Motown performers such as Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and Aretha Franklin. Motown Magic showtime is 7:30 p.m. Concert Cues with Tom Singer begins at 6:45 p.m. at the Alberta Bair Theater. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Motown Records was founded on January 12, 1959, by Berry Gordy. During the 1960s, Motown exploded on the music scene with acts like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (first act to be signed), The Supremes (the most successful group to be signed), Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, and many more. With more than 180 number one hits and the development of the Motown sound, Gordy “reached across the racial divide with music that could touch all people, regardless of the color of their skin.” (Gordy’s induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame) Originally hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Sydney Morton started training in ballet at four years old. Growing up in a musical family (her grandfather was a Broadway performer and music teacher), she also sang in school choirs and played piano from a young age. Her interest in the performing arts grew, and eventually included other styles of dance and acting. Sydney went on to receive a BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Michigan (go blue!), as well as studying Shakespeare in London at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Upon graduating, Sydney moved to New York and began performing in professional theatre, first landing the role of “Gabriella” in High School Musical at Paper Mill Playhouse. From there, she joined the Chicago company of the hit, Jersey Boys, playing the role of “Francine.” Broadway soon followed, as she had the honor of performing in four Original Broadway Casts: Memphis, Evita, American Psycho, and Motown, where
Sydney Morton
she worked closely with Berry Gordy himself and played the controversial member of the Supremes, “Florence Ballard.” Jarran Muse recently performed the role of Marvin Gaye on Broadway and in the National Touring productions of Motown the Musical. Some of his other Broadway, International Tours include Green Day’s American Idiot, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, 42nd Street, and the new Broadway-bound inspirational musical Born for This. This Jersey boy studied at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and at various Acting Studios in Los Angeles and New York City. He is currently finishing his degree with Full Sail University in Florida. Sydney Morton and Jarran Muse will be participating in several outreaches through our Explore Music! program. These include the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, Senior High School, St. Charles Indian Mission, Jarran Muse Montana State Women’s prison, and Riverside Middle School. These outreaches are due to a grant received by the National Endowments of the Arts (NEA). The Skyview Chorale and Chamber Choir are two of the five curricular choirs offered at Skyview High School. In a choral program of nearly 300 students, these two choirs represent the top level of vocal music at the high school. Chorale is a mixed choir of 60 students and Chamber Choir is a treble choir of about 30. These two ensembles, along with several extra-curricular groups at Skyview, represent the school in various ways throughout the school year. They participate in numerous festivals, sing the National anthem at games and assemblies and perform at events within the school and in the community, particularly throughout the Heights. Their director, Amy Logan, is in her 13th year at Skyview and is proud to have these fantastic students perform with the Billings Symphony Orchestra. Motown Magic is proudly sponsored by Diane Boyer Jerhoff, USBank, & Underriner Motors. The 2018 -2019 host Hotel is The Northern Hotel. The 2018 -2019 Media Sponsor is KTVQ2. The 2018 -2019 season is proudly sponsored by The Oakland Companies. Tickets for Motown Magic are available by calling 406-2523610, online at billingssymphony.org, or at 2721 2nd Ave N. Ste. 350. MSUB Library and the Writer's Voice present The NEA/Big Read Program
Billings to read and celebrate “Station Eleven” during event featuring lectures, films, and discussions In partnership with the Montana State University Billings Library, The Writer’s Voice will introduce Montanans to the writing of Emily St. John Mandel through a dynamic collaboration among the university faculty and students, Billings Public Library, area high schools, and Billings community. The program is also supported by Yellowstone Public Radio. The Writer’s Voice is once again hosting the NEA Big Read in Billings this spring. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The NEA Big Read in Billings will focus on Mandel’s book, Station Eleven. The critically acclaimed novel won the Arthur C. Clarke Award, was a finalist for the National Book Award and PEN/Faulkner Award, and was named one of the best books of the year by more than a dozen publications.
“The MSU Billings Library is excited to partner with the Writer’s Voice on this Big Read grant. We have partnered on many successful Big Read grants together; however, this one is particularly exciting because the choice of Emily St. John Mandel’s dystopian novel, Station Eleven, appeals to a broad range of audiences, including younger readers,” shared Darlene Hert, MSU Billings library director. “We have planned a wide array of programming and activities that will engage and encourage thoughtful discussions and excite people about the power of story.” Events begin January 17, with the opening of an art exhibition, This Vibrant, Tarnished World, by Jennifer Eli French in the Northcutt Steele Gallery at MSU Billings. The exhibit is inspired by the futuristic novel, Station Eleven. The public is invited to pick up a free copy of the book at the MSUB Library and sign up for a discussion group. Sixteen book discussions are scheduled at various times, dates and venues; information is available here. Discussion groups begin January 29. Books will also be available at the Billings Public Library, This House of Books, and the art exhibition. A national initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The Writer's Voice was founded in 1991 to provide access to the arts in non-traditional communities and opportunities for active engagement between writers and audiences. For more information about The Writer’s Voice contact Corby Skinner at 294-2390 or Corby@skinnerbenoit.com.
