Billings-area hunter education classes set
Eight week-long hunter education classes are scheduled in the Billings area for February and March. Certified volunteers will teach the free Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks classes, which are required for most people to hunt in Montana. Online registration for the classes is encouraged. Students may register online at the Montana FWP web site – http://fwp. mt.gov and follow the links to education, “hunter education programs” and “find a class.” Students must be at least 10 years old to register. Students younger than 18 years old must bring a parent or guardian to the orientation and registration session. All classes include a 6:30 p.m. registration and orientation session – which is required for all students, including those who have registered online – five evenings of classes and a Saturday outdoor field exercise. Here is a list of spring hunter education classes in the Billings area: • Castle Rock and Lewis and Clark middle schools: Orientation Monday, Feb. 18; classes Feb. 25 through March 1 with a field day at Lake Elmo State Park March 2. • Shepherd Elementary, Lockwood Middle School and Riverside Middle School: Orientation Monday, Feb. 25; classes March 4-8 with a field day at Lake Elmo State Park March 9. • Laurel High School: Orientation Monday, March 4; classes March 11-15 and a field day March 16 with the venue to be announced during orientation. • Medicine Crow and Will James middle schools: Orientation Monday, March 11; classes March 18 through 22 with a field day at Lake Elmo State Park March 23. Additional classes will be scheduled at towns throughout south central Montana this spring. Residents of towns outside of Billings should watch bulletin boards at local schools or check FWP’s website at http://fwp.mt.gov and follow the links to education, “hunter education programs” and “find a class.” Mandatory field exercises for adult students who complete an online hunter education course will be scheduled for later in the year with registration information posted on the FWP website. Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1985, must complete a hunter education class or qualify as a youth apprentice hunter before purchasing a Montana hunting license.

An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt
@ The Alberta Bair Theater 7:30 p.m. One Night Only! Lyle Lovett, a singer-composer actor, has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. With a gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in an inclusive, eclectic manner that breaks down barriers. John Hiatt, a singer-songwriter, has just completed his 23rd studio album The Eclipse Sessions. Following his move to Nashville, the material came quickly, showing he still has much to say. Long celebrated as a skilled storyteller and keen observer of life’s twists and turns, Hiatt can get at the heart of a knotty emotion or a moment in time with just a sharp, incisive lyric or witty turn of phrase. This latest album proves Hiatt is only getting better with age, his guitar playing more rugged and rootsy, his words wider and wrier. Alberta Bair Theater 2801 3rd Ave N February 7

The Big Read: Station Eleven
@ This House of Books 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. Here is your chance to share in a book discussion with everyone in the nation right here in Billings. Our first discussion, on Monday, February 4 at 5 will be moderated by Julie Schultz who tells us with no little enthusiasm, “I ADORE Station Eleven.” This year’s The Big Read novel, Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, tells the story of a small band of actors and musicians 20 years after a flu pandemic has wiped out 99% of the Earth’s population. Like other books in the post-apocalypse genre, it presents some of the horrors that follow complete social collapse. Unlike other books in the genre, Mandel brings the story into the world that remains 20 years after the collapse, when things have settled a little. Station Eleven describes a world of hope, of people coping with nostalgia and loss, both in the present and the future, of the power of art and relationships to fulfill us, sustain us, and nurture us back to our best selves. Hot Club of San Francisco
This ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Quintette du Hot Club de France. The HCSF borrows the instrumentation of violin, bass, and guitars from the original Hot Club while breathing new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist, Paul Mehling. Featuring the silken violin of twice GRAMMY® Award-winning Evan Price, the velvet vocals of Isabelle Fontaine, and a swinging rhythm section, the group never fails to surprise and delight.
To hear the ensemble live or on any of their 13 albums is to be carried back to the tight, smoky jazz clubs of 1930’s Paris and to the refined lounge of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entranced audiences around the globe for over 25 years. Acoustic Guitar has hailed the group’s playing as “intricate, scorching and often brilliant.” With frequent national and international tours—from Iceland to Lincoln Center and the Monterey Jazz Festival—The Hot Club of San Francisco keeps this historic music fresh and alive. 6 Steps to Safer Ryniker-Morrison Winter Driving Gallery to host Red (Family Features) The winter season is typically one of the busiest times of the year for travelers. While millions prepare to hit the road to visit family and see sights they may never have seen before, there's one essential travel tip that cannot be overlooked: the proper tires.
Winter tires are an essential safety feature for drivers and deliver as much as a 25-50 percent increase in traction over all-season tires, which could be the margin you need to brake in time to avoid trouble. Winter tire tread design uses thousands of extra traction edges for added grip, and the softer rubber of the tire surface allows the tires to stay pliable in colder temperatures to maintain contact with the road. In addition, winter tires feature aggressive groove patterns for more confident grip on ice, slush and snow. Learn the best time to install your winter tires and how to keep them in safe condition with these guidelines from the experts at Discount Tire: Plan ahead. A good rule of thumb: if you can see your breath, you should think about winter tires for all four wheels, even if your area isn't often affected by ice or snow. When the temperature drops to 45 F and below, all-season tires can start to lose traction and grip. Keep tabs on pressure. Check your tire pressure at least once a month. For every 10-degree drop in temperature, your tires lose one pound of pressure (PSI). Use a tire pressure gauge to get the proper reading or stop by a tire store, such as your local Discount Tire, for a free air check. Check your tread with the penny test. Tread depth determines a vehicle's safe stopping distance. To check your tread depth, stick a penny upside-down in a tread groove. It's time to replace your tires if Lincoln's head is visible. Know the limitations of all-wheel drive. Drivers often mistake all-wheel drive as sufficient for driving in sleet or snow. In reality, all-wheel drive only helps you start from a stop. It doesn't function in the stopping or steering of a vehicle. Designate a winter set of wheels, too. Having a set of wheels specifically for your set of winter tires can save you money in the long run. A second set of wheels eliminates the cost of changeover and spares nicer wheels from the wear and tear of ice, slush, snow and salt. Extend your winter tires' use. Rotate your tires at least every 6,000 miles, or earlier if irregular or uneven wear develops. Change out your winter tires around tax season. This can help avoid wearing out the rubber in hot months and increase the tires' lifespans. As you prepare for winter travel season, visit discounttire.com to find a tire store near you, or search for winter tires specific to your vehicle's make and model. Lodge Clay Center
Rocky Mountain College’s Ryniker-Morrison Gallery will host an exhibit of work by Red Lodge Clay Center artists in Tech Hall on the RMC campus from Feb. 7 through Feb. 28, 2019. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2019, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The exhibit features four permanent artists from the Red Lodge Clay Center; Kelsie Bowen, Crista Ann Ames, Emily Nickel, and Karl Schwiesow. Kelsie Bowen studied at the California College of Arts and Ceramics. She has been featured in exhibitions at the American Museum of Ceramic Arts, located in Los Angeles. Bowen began work with the Red Lodge Clay Center after earning her undergraduate degree. Bowen’s work is inspired by the truth and fairy tale elements in child imagery. "To dwell within the naivety of childhood is to simultaneously exist within both a fairy tale and a nightmare,” said Bowen. Crista Ann Ames captures myth, animals, and the female figure in her sculptures. Her mediums include clay, textiles, and wood. After earning a B.A. in ceramics with a minor in art history and disability studies, Crista attended Utah State University for Post Baccalaureate studies in ceramics. She received her M.F.A. from the University of Montana. "In bridging the gap between myth and experience,” said Ames, “I utilize my artistic practice to create altogether new stories that tell contemporary tales of trauma, joy, and womanhood.” Emily Nickel earned her M.F.A. at Indiana University and has been exhibited across the world from Baltimore, Md. to Kyoto, Japan. Currently, she is an artist and art educator at the Red Lodge Clay Center. Her recent work focuses on ceramic figures of magical animals with humans beside them. “My sculptures reference Portal Fantasy: a literary genre featuring a protagonist’s journey through a magical passageway to another world,” said Nickel. Karl Schwiesow earned a B.F.A. in sculpture and ceramics from Sierra Nevada College in 2012. He went on to earn an M.F.A. from the University of Montana in 2017. Schwiesow has exhibited works in Calif., Nev., Wash., Mont., and Pa. His work captures the breakdown of objects as he reconstructs them. “The work is both formal and object-based dependent upon the viewer’s engagement and cultural understanding in order to appreciate them as art objects,” said Schwiesow. The Ryniker-Morrison Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday, except during College holidays. High resolution images from the upcoming show are available on request. Located near Kalispell, Lone Pine State Park provides incredible views of the Flathead Valley, as well as year-round and wide-ranging outdoor recreation activities. Originally owned as part of a large sheep ranch by Ernest and Hazel White, in 1941 the White’s donated the land that now makes up Lone Pine State Park, for public use and education. The Whites stipulated that the land be developed for public use and to teach an appreciation for the benefits of conservation. Did you know? Lone Pine hosts extensive educational and recreation opportunities throughout the year? In the next month alone, events range from fly tying to avalanche awareness to birding and snowshoeing. Be sure to check out their Facebook page for more listings. Looking for activities at Lone Pine? You’ll find: • Archery • Bird Watching/Wildlife Viewing • Cross Country Skiing • Hiking • Horseback Riding • Horseshoes • Mountain Biking • Snowshoeing • Plus so many more! The visitor center has a gift shop and provides visitors with highlights of the wildlife and forest ecology of the park. A great spot for meetings or social gatherings (can host up to 100 people), the visitor center has a spacious meeting room with audio/visual capabilities and wrap around decks! 7.5 miles of trails can accommodate for short or long hikes where you’ll find great views of wildflowers and local wildlife. Snowshoe rentals are available for $5 per person or $10 per family during the winter months. With adult workshops, children's activities and interpretive programs throughout the year, Lone Pine State Park is an ideal stop for field trips, out of state visitors or Montana residents interested in learning more about northwestern Montana. DID YOU KNOW? You wouldn’t know from looking around the heavily forested Lone Pine today, but when the land was originally donated, there were barely a handful of trees. At one of the main overlooks, there was a single pine growing out of a cliff and this tree gave the park its name. Although this “lone pine” is no longer standing, a plaque now marks its location.

The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis
and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

MSUB Library and the Writer's Voice present The NEA/Big Read Program
Billings to read and celebrate “Station Eleven” during event featuring lectures, films, and discussions In partnership with the Montana State University Billings Library, The Writer’s Voice will introduce Montanans to the writing of Emily St. John Mandel through a dynamic collaboration among the university faculty and students, Billings Public Library, area high schools, and Billings community. The program is also supported by Yellowstone Public Radio. The Writer’s Voice is once again hosting the NEA Big Read in Billings this spring. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The NEA Big Read in Billings will focus on Mandel’s book, Station Eleven. The critically acclaimed novel won the Arthur C. Clarke Award, was a finalist for the National Book Award and PEN/Faulkner Award, and was named one of the best books of the year by more than a dozen publications.
“The MSU Billings Library is excited to partner with the Writer’s Voice on this Big Read grant. We have partnered on many successful Big Read grants together; however, this one is particularly exciting because the choice of Emily St. John Mandel’s dystopian novel, Station Eleven, appeals to a broad range of audiences, including younger readers,” shared Darlene Hert, MSU Billings library director. “We have planned a wide array of programming and activities that will engage and encourage thoughtful discussions and excite people about the power of story.” Events begin January 17, with the opening of an art exhibition, This Vibrant, Tarnished World, by Jennifer Eli French in the Northcutt Steele Gallery at MSU Billings. The exhibit is inspired by the futuristic novel, Station Eleven. The public is invited to pick up a free copy of the book at the MSUB Library and sign up for a discussion group. Sixteen book discussions are scheduled at various times, dates and venues; information is available here. Discussion groups begin January 29. Books will also be available at the Billings Public Library, This House of Books, and the art exhibition. A national initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The Writer's Voice was founded in 1991 to provide access to the arts in non-traditional communities and opportunities for active engagement between writers and audiences. For more information about The Writer’s Voice contact Corby Skinner at 294-2390 or Corby@skinnerbenoit.com.
