Billings-area hunter education classes set

Eight week-long hunter education classes are scheduled in the Billings area for February and March. Certified volunteers will teach the free Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks classes, which are required for most people to hunt in Montana. Online registration for the classes is encouraged. Students may register online at the Montana FWP web site – http://fwp. mt.gov and follow the links to education, “hunter education programs” and “find a class.” Students must be at least 10 years old to register. Students younger than 18 years old must bring a parent or guardian to the orientation and registration session. All classes include a 6:30 p.m. registration and orientation session – which is required for all students, including those who have registered online – five evenings of classes and a Saturday outdoor field exercise. Here is a list of spring hunter education classes in the Billings area: • Castle Rock and Lewis and Clark middle schools: Orientation Monday, Feb. 18; classes Feb. 25 through March 1 with a field day at Lake Elmo State Park March 2. • Shepherd Elementary, Lockwood Middle School and Riverside Middle School: Orientation Monday, Feb. 25; classes March 4-8 with a field day at Lake Elmo State Park March 9. • Laurel High School: Orientation Monday, March 4; classes March 11-15 and a field day March 16 with the venue to be announced during orientation. • Medicine Crow and Will James middle schools: Orientation Monday, March 11; classes March 18 through 22 with a field day at Lake Elmo State Park March 23. Additional classes will be scheduled at towns throughout south central Montana this spring. Residents of towns outside of Billings should watch bulletin boards at local schools or check FWP’s website at http://fwp.mt.gov and follow the links to education, “hunter education programs” and “find a class.” Mandatory field exercises for adult students who complete an online hunter education course will be scheduled for later in the year with registration information posted on the FWP website. Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1985, must complete a hunter education class or qualify as a youth apprentice hunter before purchasing a Montana hunting license.

You’ll have access to the rooms on the first and second floors as you use your best strategy to search for clues, garner weapons, and avoid the murderer who is still on the loose. Reservations are required – admission is $25 per person (should be 18 or older to play) and includes light snacks and a beverage while the points are tallied about 8:30 p.m. Make your reservations early – we’ve done away with the wait list, so watch our Facebook page and this website closely. Reservations will open six weeks before each event and can be made through the links in this calendar, the links on Facebook, or by calling the Moss Mansion. This ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Quintette du Hot Club de France. Yellowstone Historical Society Monthly meeting

YHS meetings are held on the 3rd Friday of the month, at the Elk’s Club on Lewis Avenue. “Our Town”

The Big Read: Station Eleven

5 p.m. – 6 p.m. Here is your chance to share in a book discussion with everyone in the nation right here in Billings. Our first discussion, on Monday, February 4 at 5 will be moderated by Julie Schultz who tells us with no little enthusiasm, “I ADORE Station Eleven.” This year’s The Big Read novel, Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, tells the story of a small band of actors and musicians 20 years after a flu pandemic has wiped out 99% of the Earth’s population. Like other books in the post-apocalypse genre, it presents some of the horrors that follow complete social collapse. Unlike other books in the genre, Mandel brings the story into the world that remains 20 years after the collapse, when things have settled a little. Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Participants must comply with state fishing contest regulations, including daily and possession limits. Applications for fishing contests may be approved, approved with conditions, or denied by the FWP Fisheries Division in Helena. Conditions placed on contests may help to minimize

ZooMontana is a 70-acre wildlife park located in Billings, Montana. As Montana’s only zoo and botanical park, we focus on wildlife native to Montana, the Rockies, and other cold temperature regions at or above the 45th Parallel. Three Grand Prizes at the MATE The 43rd annual Montana Agri-Trade Exposition (MATE) provides three opportunities to win a grand prize February 14-16, 2019.

Guests use their free tickets as entrance into the contests. Once the back of the ticket is filled out and signed, attendees can place them in the drawing drums. The final day of the MATE show, Saturday, February 16, the winners are randomly selected from each corresponding drawing drum. Need not be present to win. Must be 18 years of age or older. Winners are taxed on the retail value of the prize. The MATE Grand Prize is proudly provided by John Deere C & B Operations. This year the winner will take home a Z540M Zero Turn Lawnmower. Everything about the MATE Show The MATE show, February 14-16, highlights agriculture products and services for just in time for the upcoming Spring season. D rawing visitors from 500 miles radius the MATE is the largest Agriculture trade show in the region. Since 1976 the MATE, short for Montana Agri-Trade Exposition, invites agricultural businesses to MetraPark for a three-day trade show. Increased interest, and attendance grew the MATE to become the largest Ag trade show in the region. The businesses that set up booths capture their target audience and build relationships with customers.

The MATE show focuses on agriculture, but it also features the Home & Health show. Businesses that offer products and services for the home set up in the Montana Pavilion. The home is a part of the farm or ranch after all. Clothing, food, nutrition, insurance, crafting supplies, and a menagerie of other things fill the Home & Health show.

Equipment dealers bring in the latest models of tractors. Seed specialist display new varieties. Livestock nutritionist answer questions and provide strategies. Visitors come because they can test out products, investigate new technologies, and come up with ideas to take back to the farm or ranch to make operation better.

Every year Grand Prizes are given away on the last day of the show. This year's grand prizes are a John Deere lawn mower, a selection of pork and beef from Ranch House Meats, and one ton of SweetPro from AgriBest Feeds. For a chance to win fill out the back of the MATE ticket and put it in the drawing drums. The winners will be announced Saturday, February 16 starting at 4:15 p.m.

The spring-like February weather usually encourages cabin-fevered neighbors to come out and catch up. MATE provides an atmosphere of swapping stories and one-upping who got more moisture.

Traveling Frankenstein exhibit at MSU Billings Library Open through March 17 The Montana State University Billings Library is featuring a traveling exhibit Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature, on display through March 17. The six-banner traveling exhibit explores the Birth of Frankenstein, the life of author Mary Shelley, the scientific search for the principle of life, and the transformation of the “monster” in popular culture. Hours: • Monday-Thursday: 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. • Friday: 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. • Saturday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. • Sunday: 2 p.m. – 10 p.m. Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature is produced by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) which works in touring the exhibit to American Libraries. Their goal is to create exciting and informative exhibits that increase awareness and appreciation for the health information resources of the NLM. “We are very excited to be hosting another exhibit from the NLM; we enjoy seeing students come into the library to check out the display,” said reference librarian Eileen Wright,

“We are very happy that we get to be a part of this national exhibition tour once again.” On a dark and stormy night in 1816, Mary Shelley began writing a story that posed profound questions about individual and societal responsibility for other people. To make her point, the young novelist used the scientific advances of her era and the controversies surrounding them as a metaphor for issues of unchecked power and self-serving ambition, and their effect on the human community. Since that time, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, has become one of the Western world’s most enduring myths. The story provides a framework for discussions of medical advances that challenge our traditional understanding of what it means to be human. A lecture highlighting this exhibit will be presented by Tom Nurmi on March 12 at 6:30 p.m. to begin the Library’s spring lecture series. His lecture, The Prometheus Paradox: How Monsters Make Us Human, is based on Frankenstein and the display by the NLM. Those who attend the lecture are encouraged to check out the exhibit as they visit the library.
