The Irish Comedy Tour

The Irish Comedy Tour combines the party atmosphere of a Dublin pub with a boisterous, belly-laugh band of hooligans, who include Detroit native Derek Richards (The Bob & Tom Show, SiriusXM, and The Weather Channel’s Top 10), Boston-born Mike McCarthy (Comedy Central and Showtime), Nova Scotia’s Damon Leibert, and from Inchicore, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland Derrick Keane. Laugh as they tear apart and validate Irish myths and stereotypes. Intended for an adult audience. Alberta Bair Theater 2722 3rd Ave. N www.albertabairtheater.org March 8

Live Action Clue Game

7 p.m. The most popular item in our calendar – live-action Clue Games are a great evening of fun! The game starts at 7 p.m. sharp with brief rules and character selection, and the fun begins almost immediately. You’ll have access to the rooms on the first and second floors as you use your best strategy to search for clues, garner weapons, and avoid the murderer who is still on the loose. Reservations are required – admission is $25 per person (should be 18 or older to play) and includes light snacks and a beverage while the points are tallied about 8:30 p.m. Make your reservations early – we’ve done away with the wait list, so watch our Facebook page and this website closely. Reservations will open six weeks before each event and can be made through the links in this calendar, the links on Facebook, or by calling the Moss Mansion. No paper tickets or refunds are issued for this event. Each game is limited to 25 guests. Private Clue Games may be booked with Aly Winterhalter, our Tour Coordinator, at 406-256-5100. Minimum 15 guests, maximum 25. Special kid-friendly versions are available by request, more suitable for ages 12 and up. Moss Mansion Museum 914 Division St. March 8, 9, 10*, 14, 1, 16

Mamma Mia!

Music and Lyrics by Benny Adnersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus And some songs with Stig Anderson Book by Catherine Johnson ABBA’s hits tell the hilarious story of a teen’s search for her birth father on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, her quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. The story-telling magic of timeless songs like “Honey, Honey,” “Dancing Queen,” and “Take a Chance on Me” propels this enchanting tale of love,

laughter, and friendship, creating an unforgettable show. *Denotes Matinee Show Times: Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 7:30 p.m. (Doors Open At 7 p.m.) Sunday Matinees: 2 p.m. (Doors Open At 1:30 p.m.) Adults: $22 Student/Senior/Military: $20 Billings Studio Theatre 1500 Rimrock Rd

Glenn Miller Orchestra

7:30 p.m. The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all dance bandleaders back in the Swing Era of the 1930s and 40s. A matchless string of hit records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts and the drawing power at theatres, hotels and dance pavilion, built and sustained the momentum of popularity. Glenn disbanded his musical organization in 1942 at the height of its popularity to volunteer for the Army. There, he organized and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went to Europe to entertain servicemen performing numerous live and radio shows. On December 15, 1944, Major Miller took off in a singleengine plane from Europe to precede his band to France, disappearing over the English Channel, never to be seen again. The army declared him officially dead a year later. With the release of the major motion movie The Glenn Miller Story featuring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson in 1954, interest and popular demand led the Miller Estate to authorize the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra. On June 6, 1956, and under the direction of drummer Ray McKinley who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappearance, the reformed Glenn Miller Orchestra performed its first concert and has been on the road ever since. Other leaders have followed Ray including clarinetists Buddy DeFranco and Peanuts Hucko, trombonists Buddy Morrow, Jimmy Henderson, Larry O’Brien, and Gary Tole, and tenor saxophonist Dick Gerhart. Since January 2012, vocalist Nick Hilscher leads the band.

Irish Comedy Tour creates laughter Four boisterous, irreverent Irishmen walk into a pub, er, Alberta Bair Theater on Friday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. to create the party atmosphere of a Dublin pub, complete with accomplished fiddle and guitar, and a whole lot of belly-laughs. The clover - make that clever - comedians of The Irish Comedy Tour, whose ancestors hail from the Emerald Isle, include Detroit native Derek Richards; Boston-born Mike McCarthy; Nova Scotia's Damon Leibert; and from Inchicore, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland Derrick Keane. Richards is known for telling hilarious stories about his mom's dog, the holidays, and dating a stripper. He has appeared on The Bob & Tom Show, Sirius/XM, and The Weather Channel's Top 10. McCarthy's no-holds-barred humor has landed him on Comedy Central and Showtime. The "comedy barbarian," as he calls himself, takes no prisoners when it comes to poking fun at society's most sensitive topics. Leibert's unique, energetic style of fiddle playing lies somewhere between the driving dance beat of Cape Breton and the lyrical melodies of Ireland. His power packed performance adds an incredible dimension to the show. And finally Keane, who first distinguished himself musically when the duo in which he sang and played swept the All Ireland Talent Competition. His band, Inchicore, sets the gold standard for the Irish music scene in New England and across North America. Don't miss these hilarious Irish American comedians as they tear apart, as well as validate, Irish myths and stereotypes. This show is intended for an adult audience.

Great Tools for Winter Adventures (StatePoint) It may be winter, but that’s no reason to put your outdoor adventures on hold. When you’re properly equipped, you may find you can brave all kinds of weather. Stay safe, smart and warm with the following tools and gear: • Moisture-Wicking Fabrics: Fabrics aren’t what they used to be. While long johns and other cool weather gear were once comprised of natural fabrics, such as cotton, textile engineering has taken true warmth to new frontiers. Be sure that you layer up the right way with moisture-wicking fabrics, which are designed to wick away moisture from the skin and allow it to dry rapidly. This is particularly essential for your base layer, as even in cold weather, you’re going to sweat when you are active, and your outermost layer which is in contact with the elements. • Tough Tech: The latest rugged watches are standing up to the toughest conditions. Check out the G-SHOCK MUDMASTER GG1000-1A8 from Casio, particularly if you like to get muddy. The watch, which is built to withstand extreme weather, boasts a cylindrical guard structure to prevent mud, dust, and debris from entering, as well as features

that enhance button operation even when you’re wearing gloves. Twin sensor technology accurately determines compass bearing and temperature and each model comes equipped with such useful features as 200M water resistance, shock resistance, an auto super illuminator LED light, world time, alarms, a stopwatch, timer and more. • Fire-Starting Gear: You may be a crackerjack at starting the campfire on balmy summer nights, but come winter, things can be a bit trickier. Be sure your pack includes a high-quality fire-starting kit that include long-burning, wind-resistant, waterproof matches, extra strikers and a durable, waterproof case. • Hydration: Staying hydrated remains just as important as ever in cold weather. Whether you prefer a simple bottle set-up or a reservoir and tube you wear on your back, look for a hydration system specifically designed for winter weather that can withstand hot liquids and prevent your drinks from freezing. If there are no limits and no off-season for you,

Generation Irish Dance ‘Murphy’s Celtic Legacy’ fills the stage at Alberta Bair Theater on March 1 On a dark and stormy night in 1816, Mary Shelley began writing a story that posed profound questions about individual and societal responsibility for other people. To make her point, the young novelist used the scientific advances of her era and the controversies surrounding them as a metaphor for issues of unchecked power and self-serving ambition, and their effect on the human community. Since that time, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, has become one of the Western world’s most enduring myths. The story provides a framework for discussions of medical advances that challenge our traditional understanding of what it means to be human. A lecture highlighting this exhibit will be presented by Tom Nurmi on March 12 at 6:30 p.m. to begin the Library’s spring lecture series. His lecture, The Prometheus Paradox: How Monsters Make Us Human, is based on Frankenstein and the display by the NLM. Those who attend the lecture are encouraged to check out the exhibit as they visit the library. For more information and to learn more about this exhibit, contact reference librarian Eileen Wright at ewright@ msubillings.edu or (406) 657-1656.

The Historic Hardin Area

cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Museum and Visitor Center

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

Big Horn County

Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Bozeman Trail & Fort C. F. Smith

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 18631866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Enjoy the gift shop and interpretive exhibits 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily May-Sept., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct.-April. Admission is $Adult- $6, Seniors-$5, Student & Active Military $3, and 6 & under is free. For information about the museum and the area call 406-665-1671 or visit bighorncountymuseum.org.

Tippet Rise Fourth Concert Season Seven weeks of classical music at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains showcase internationally celebrated performers and outstanding emerging artists from around the world New sculptural pavilion, Xylem, designed by renowned architect Francis Kéré to open at start of season, offering a meditative gathering place on the Tippet Rise landscape

Artists include:

Pianists Anderson & Roe, Behzod Abduraimov, Julien Brocal, Jenny Chen, Stephen Hough, Pedja Muzijevic, Roman Rabinovich, and Aristo Sham; violinists Benjamin Beilman, Jennifer Frautschi, Paul Huang, and Katie Hyun; violists Ayane Kozasa and Nathan Schram; cellists Gabriel Cabezas and Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir; bassist Anthony Manzo; oboist James Austin Smith; flutist Brandon Patrick George; the Escher, JACK, Rolston, and St. Lawrence string quartets; and the Gryphon Trio Fishtail, MT, February 20, 2019—Tippet Rise Art Center today announced full program details for its fourth concert season, to be presented from July 12 to September 7, 2019. The season’s artists will perform 23 classical music concerts both indoors and out at the art center, which is set on a 12,000-acre working ranch at the foot of Montana’s Beartooth Mountains. Under the direction of newly appointed Artistic Advisor Pedja Muzijevic, the season features an international roster of celebrated artists and rising stars, in programs that span more than four centuries of repertoire. Peter and Cathy Halstead, founders of Tippet Rise Art Center, said, “The artists are engaged, the programs have been set, and we’re looking forward to the fourth season at Tippet Rise with joy and gratitude. We thank Pedja Muzijevic for helping create such a satisfying and fascinating season of the old and the new, the musicians for joining what has become a Tippet Rise family of artists, and especially our wonderful audiences, who come from right next door and around the world to share these experiences with us. We have new music to offer this season, including our John Luther Adams world premiere. We have a new place where visitors can gather with friends or contemplate nature quietly, at Francis Kéré’s beautiful pavilion, which we will call Xylem. And we have the age-old connection between the land, the sky, and music. We are eager to begin.” Continuing Tippet Rise’s commitment to commissioning new works, the 2019 season features the world premiere of John Luther Adams’s Lines Made By Walking (String Quartet No. 5), to be performed on August 3 by the JACK Quartet. John Luther Adams was in residence at Tippet Rise in summer 2018 and began composing this new work then.

John Luther Adams said, “Throughout my creative life, I’ve found insight and clarity by walking. Lines Made By Walking took this further. Composing in the mornings and walking in the afternoons, I discovered this music not so much through my fingers on the piano keyboard, but rather through my feet on the ground. On my walks at Tippet Rise, I followed the contours of the land—along animal trails and old roads or striking out cross-country following watersheds and ridgelines. Then, at my desk, I searched for the most fluid and beautiful routes across the musical landscape.”

The Fourth Season: An Overview

The Gryphon Trio will begin the season on Friday, July 12 with a program contrasting early chamber music by Beethoven and Brahms with a work by the globe-trotting, Sri Lankanborn composer Dinuk Wijeratne. The next day, members of the Gryphon Trio will be joined by flutist Brandon Patrick George for a concert with works by Haydn, Debussy, Ravel, and Steve Reich (Vermont Counterpoint, for flute and tape). Internationally acclaimed pianist Stephen Hough will return to Tippet Rise to conclude the first week’s schedule on July 13 with a deeply thoughtful and virtuosic program of works by Bach, Chopin, Busoni, and Liszt, as well as his own Sonata No. 4 (Vida Breve). Also returning to Tippet Rise is the St. Lawrence String Quartet, whose program on July 19 will combine quartets by Haydn with Latin-tinged contemporary works by Jonathan Berger and Osvaldo Golijov. The following day, members of the quartet will perform works by Bach, Beethoven, and Prokofiev, including a Golijov arrangement of Beethoven bagatelles. Pianist and composer Julien Brocal, who received the 2018 Newcomer of the Year Award from BBC Music Magazine, will return to Tippet Rise on July 20 to perform the world premiere of three of his own compositions – Reflections, Into the Wild, and Snowing on the Moon—as well as two of Chopin’s Ballades and works by Bach and the distinguished nature-inspired Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks. Pianist Aristo Sham made a stir internationally in 2017 by winning prizes at the Verbier Festival and the Clara Haskil, Saint-Priest, and Viotti international piano competitions. On August 2, he will play a Romantic recital with works by Schumann and Brahms, followed the next day by a performance with cellist Gabriel Cabezas and violinist Katie Hyun in works by Haydn and Mendelssohn. The season’s third week will reach its climax on August 3 with an all-John Luther Adams program featuring the JACK Quartet, including the world premiere of the Quartet No. 5.

Week four of the season will be a mini-residency for pianist Roman Rabinovich, violinist Paul Huang, and the Escher String Quartet. Their wide-ranging programs will span repertoire from Bach, Schubert, Brahms, Dvořák, and SaintSaëns to György Ligeti’s trailblazing 1951-53 Musica ricercata. Celebrated pianist Behzod Abduraimov will make his Tippet Rise debut on August 16 in a concert of music by Liszt and Mussorgsky, including Liszt’s transcription of Wagner’s Liebestod. On August 17, the Rolston String Quartet will perform works by Haydn and Debussy in the morning, followed by an evening performance by pianist Jenny Chen. A rising star who has performed annually at Tippet Rise since the 2016 inaugural season, she will appear at the art center this year after making her Carnegie Hall debut, playing an ambitious selection of pieces by Chopin and Beethoven. A special “festival weekend” on August 23-25 will feature the art center’s Artistic Advisor, pianist Pedja Muzijevic, joined by seven musicians in residence. They are acclaimed violinist Benjamin Beilman; violinist Jennifer Frautschi, a two-time Grammy nominee and Avery Fisher career grant recipient; violists Ayane Kozasa and Nathan Schram from the Aizuri and Attacca quartets, respectively; cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir; oboist James Austin Smith; and bassist Anthony Manzo. They will join forces for five concerts, each sixty minutes long, with solo and chamber music by Telemann, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Dvořák, Dohnányi, Berio, and Reich. Tippet Rise will close the concert season by welcoming members of Ensemble Connect, a two-year fellowship program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. These rising young talents will showcase pieces by Boccherini, Kodály, and Brahms on September 6, and by Mozart, Paul Wiancko, Alexandra Gardner, and David Bruce on September 7. Piano duo Anderson & Roe will perform the last concert of the season with a program of Mozart, Stravinsky, Piazzolla, and Paul Schoenfield, along with the duo’s arrangements of the ballet music from Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story Suite and their own Hallelujah Variations (Variations on a Theme by Leonard Cohen). Ticketing Information Tickets for the season’s performances will be available through a randomized drawing, for which registration via the Tippet Rise website is required. 98-foot-long, 16-foot-tall, acoustically rich sculptural structure designed by the innovative Ensamble Studio. Pre-concert lectures are offered at the Tiara, a 100-seat outdoor acoustic shell, and at Stillwater cabin, a gathering and rehearsal space. In addition to regularly scheduled programs, two family concerts especially designed for younger audiences will also be presented, with details to be announced at a later date.

A New Gathering Space Opens at Tippet Rise Summer 2019 will feature the inauguration of a new 1,900-square-foot pavilion at the art center designed by the world-renowned architect Francis Kéré. Named Xylem to evoke the vital internal layers of a tree’s living structure, the pavilion was inspired by the traditional togunas of the Dogon culture of Mali - sacred shelters with wooden pillars and layered roofs of wood and millet straw, which protect from the sun and provide ventilation for the space. Xylem is being constructed of locally and sustainably sourced ponderosa and lodgepole pine and features a canopy of vertical logs above the seating areas to create both shelter and a play of light and shadow. In keeping with the educational mission of Tippet Rise, the Tippet Rise Fund of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation is supporting Kéré in his work to build environmentally sustainable and climatically appropriate schools in West Africa. Tippet Rise is funding the construction of the Naaba Belem Goumma Secondary School, a new school the architect has designed in his birthplace, the village of Gando in Burkina Faso. Sculpture Tours at Tippet Rise Tippet Rise is anchored in the belief that art, music, architecture, and nature are inextricably linked in the human experience, each making the others more powerful. In addition to its music program, the art center presents large-scale sculptures and other works by some of the world’s foremost artists and architects. Tippet Rise will reopen to the public on Friday, July 5, 2019, one week before the start of the summer music series, for tours of its monumental outdoor sculptures on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Concerts and van tours are priced at $10; free to those 21 and under. Hiking and biking at the art center are free for everyone. Prior registration via the website is required for all visitors, available beginning March 13 at 8:00 AM Mountain Time. Dining at Tippet Rise For concert ticket holders, dinner will be available for purchase before each evening’s performance, provided by chefs Nick Goldman and Wendi Reed of Wild Flower on the Rise. Sandwiches, snacks, desserts, and drinks are also available for purchase on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Dining takes place in Will’s Shed, a pavilion adjacent to the Olivier Music Barn. Getting to the Art Center Located in Stillwater County, Tippet Rise is approximately one hour southwest of Billings, two hours southeast of Bozeman, and two-and-a-half hours north of Yellowstone National Park.

18 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide

Pirogue Island State Park This week's focus takes us to just a mile north of Miles City, a little more than two hours from Billings by way of Interstate 94, on the north side of a bend in the Yellowstone River, to Pirogue Island State Park. In addition to extensive hiking, birding, and wildlife viewing, the island is a documented site where Lewis and Clark camped in 1806 on the return voyage of their famous expedition. An isolated, cottonwood-covered island located on the Yellowstone River, Pirogue Island State Park is an excellent location for enjoying the natural beauty of Montana. While wading through channels of the Yellowstone River is the most popular way to get to Pirogue Island, others stop by as they float down the river. Did you know? Pirogue Island State Park is 500 miles from where the Yellowstone River begins and 170 miles from where it ends. No camping at Pirogue Island, but you can go: • Bird Watching or Wildlife Viewing • Boating • Fishing • Hunting • Picnicking • Plus so much more! A local treasure with a wide variety of bird species including passerines, belted kingfishers, shorebirds, waterfowl, and bald eagles as well as both whitetail and mule deer, the island is an excellent location for wildlife viewing. The island also boasts prominent plant life with more than 140 species of plants including a healthy population of cottonwood trees, peach-leaf willow, green ash and red-osier dogwood. For visitors who enjoy hiking, Pirogue Island features 2.8 miles of designated hiking trails with interpretive signs offering insights on the history and wildlife of the island. Looking for more than 2.8 miles? You’re in luck! As a very level site, visitors will find an easy walk throughout the 269 acres and when the water isn’t flowing, visitors can take a walk along the tree-shaded side channels and wade through the pools of water that form during hot weather.

DID YOU KNOW? Enjoy a treasure hunt? Pirogue Island is a great location to search for moss agates. Moss agates are a unique agate that is often found with a lime coloring and gets its name for its resemblance of the color of moss, which was given to it prior to its scientific name and has stuck. Curious what other visitors had to say? • "Good spot for hunting and fishing." • "Growing up in this area I never discovered this until I went back and visited. There is a great trail (about 6 miles) that takes you all around the park and next to the river." • "I love the walking trail and having the chance to see wildlife." • "This state park is in a very interesting setting. It is an island in the Yellowstone River outside of Miles City, MT. There are picnic tables and restrooms and interesting trails to walk beside walking over to the island when the water is low. This is a great place to go with a family when the weather is nice. Springtime would not be good, the water would be too high to reach the island."

Quick Facts Park Open Year-Round 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Location 46.44181 / -105.82253 (Latitude/Longitude) Open Year Round • 269 Acres • Pets Allowed • Toilets (Vault) • Maps • Grills/Fire Rings
