Author Event: Roger Dunsmore
5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. In our continuing celebration of poetry month, we welcome Roger Dunsmore who will read from his recently published book of a lifetime of poems, lead a brief discussion, and answer questions. The event takes place on Friday, April 12, 2019, beginning at 5:30. Roger Dunsmore firmly believes “ poetry is our birthright. It’s as old as song. It’s all over the world,” He says “poetry needs to be shared beyond formal education. It needs to be brought to life.” To this end, he spent more than a year after his retirement stapling poems to utility poles in his community. Now, thanks to a grant from Corby Skinner, he will be in Billings at This House of Books, spreading poetry as a form of spiritual practice. Roger Dunmore is described as “one of the finest poets of the Great Subculture.” His poetry is said to be “ informed by the lyric past of ancient Greece and the visionary traditions of ancient America as expressed by the Sioux visionary Black Elk.” His new volume, published by the Drumlummon Institute, is titled ‘On the Chinese Wall: New & Selected Poems, 1966-2017.’ Following the presentation, he will be available to sign copies of his book. Spring is Here
And so are the birds in Southeast Montana! Sparring Sharptail by Sharon Borla
Bluebird by Connor Maas
From www.southeastmontana.com After a long winter, the high prairies, rolling hills and dynamic badlands of Southeast Montana are once again revealed to visitors. A sure sign of spring, migratory birds arrive in large numbers to color the landscape and fill the air with their songs. Whether you are a casual observer or an ornithologist-in-training, birding across the region is a great way to get outside and revel in the longer days. Where are the best places for birding in Southeast Montana? We’ve compiled a brief list of a few favorite spots.
Welcome! Visitor’s Guide – 11 By Nathan Satran Photography
Makoshika State Park – Bluebird Trail*
A pretty harbinger of spring, mountain bluebirds love wide open spaces – and Southeast Montana has that in spades. This preference in scenery is exactly why bluebirds are constantly spotted throughout Makoshika State Park. Local volunteers maintain and track 75 bluebird houses that make Makoshika even more hospitable for these colorful and curious birds. In 2017, the park’s bluebird houses set a record with 149 bluebirds fledging their nests. As its name implies, the Bluebird Trail is a good location to spot bluebirds but they flit across the nearly all of the 12,000-acre park. Additionally, you might see turkey vulture (locally known as a buzzard), the Northern flicker, Western meadowlark, horned lark, rock wren and numerous sparrow species. Tip: Plan to attend Buzzard Day on June 8 to celebrate the park’s most common avian, the turkey vulture. You can meet Lurch the Buzzard from ZooMontana, run Montana’s toughest 5K, experience a paleo hike and be entertained by Lakota Sioux Bad Bear drummers and dancers.
Bighorn River
Locally known as “The Horn,” this river’s epic reputation as a trout fishery is well-documented. The river’s open water is also a great spot to watch for raptors. From Fort Smith and Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, drive north on Montana highway 313 then continue on highway 47 to follow the water from Afterbay to the confluence with the Yellowstone. Tip: Public fishing access sites are an easy place to “glass” for birds like eagles, hawks and osprey along with other non-raptor species.
Pompeys Pillar National Monument
Another river spot, this one along the Yellowstone River, is home to massive, century-old cottonwood trees and feathered friends who thrive in that environment such ferruginous hawk, loggerhead shrike, Franklin’s gull, Northern goshawk and peregrine falcon, which are all considered “sensitive species.” Additionally, you might see American while pelican, doublebreasted cormorant, greater and lesser yellowlegs, spotted sandpiper, belted kingfisher, hairy woodpecker, Western wood peewee, tree and cliff swallows, bluejay, white-breasted nuthatch, house wren, brown thrasher and many more. Tip: Use your national park service (NPS) pass for entrance. If not yet open for the season, you may walk in from the gate and may have this incredible site to yourself.
Medicine Rocks State Park
The hallmark sandstone rocks that erupt from the prairie provide nirvana for birds and bird-lovers alike. Additionally, the rock cavities, buttes, ponderosa pine and rolling prairies
offer a unique mix of landscapes, which harbors Western meadlowlark, sage and sharptail grouse, rock wren, killdeer, golden and bald eagles, mountain bluebird, song sparrow, American robin, red-tailed hawk, great horned owl, downy woodpecker and red-winged blackbird. Tip: Avian adventurers will love the out-of-the-way-ness of the Chalk Buttes in the Custer Gallatin National Forest near Ekalaka, which offers stunning views and a diverse pine-covered landscape.
Roundup RiverWalk Heritage Trail
Located about 45 minutes north of Billings and the Bull Mountains, the Roundup area is highlighted by the Musselshell River. Find the RiverWalk at east end of 2nd Ave. East with a kiosk near the fairgrounds. Designated pathways guide you among aged cottonwood and green ash trees that line the river and ponderosa pine, chokecherry and juniper on the sandstone bluffs above the river. This area is home to about 80 species of birds such as lazuli bunting, yellow-breasted chat, great horned owl, belted kingfisher and several varieties of warblers. Tip: While in the area, be sure to at Lake Mason National Wildlife Refuge where you might see burrowing owl, Lapland longspur, snow bunting and horned lark along with sage grouse in the sagebrush areas.
Little Bighorn Battlefield National Park
The rolling prairies of this national park features the ideal environment for many grassland birds including killdeer and Western meadowlark, Montana’s state bird. National Park Service rangers know the park the best, so be sure to ask which avian friends they have been seeing. Tip: Calhoun Hill, named after Lt. Calhoun leader of Company L, is an area frequented by sharp-tail grouse. The worn area where male grouse “dance” to impress their mate is known as a lek (pronounced: lěk). These birds will spook easily so we suggest arriving early in the day and being patient – and, have your camera or video recorder ready.

Student work showcased at MSUB Research and Creativity Conference The sixth annual Research, Creativity, and Community Involvement Conference (RCCIC) will be held on Friday, April 12 at Montana State University Billings. A variety of student work from over 140 MSUB students will be on display for all to enjoy.
This event is free and open to the public and will include various demonstrations ranging from music concerts and the Student Art Exhibition to the first-ever student presentation formatted as a discussion forum. Guests will also get to enjoy oral presentations covering a wide variety of topics including Google trends concerning psychological disorders and analyses of favorite television shows. The annual Juried Student Exhibition ( JSE) reception and awards ceremony will be held Thursday, April 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Northcutt Steele Gallery. The exhibition will remain open for viewing throughout the conference and through April 30. “Submissions were received in response to an exhibition call extended earlier this year to all students currently enrolled at MSUB and City College” shared David Craig, honors program director and RCCIC coordinator. “The artworks selected for exhibition testify to rich talents and diverse visions of MSUB students working across a range of media.” Following the JSE reception, the MSU Billings Music Department will present a Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. featuring MSUB groups and guest musician Jeff Troxel of Wyo. On Friday, April 12 at 12:45 p.m., Gary Ferguson, a noted nature and ecology writer, will open the conference with the keynote lecture in Petro Theatre located on the MSUB campus. A well-known author in the science community and beyond, Ferguson has published 26 books and hundreds of articles centered on ecology, conservation, and nature. After graduating from the University of Indiana in 1979, Ferguson worked for the U.S. Forest Service before beginning his successful career in writing. From there, he has been recognized for many awards from several renowned organizations, including the Society of American Travel Writers, High Plains Book Festival, and the Montana Book
Award committee. He continues to be a frequent contributor to a wide variety of publications, including Vanity Fair, Orion, and the Los Angeles Times. His first book, titled Hawks Rest, was the first book to be awarded Book of the Year by the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Association as well as the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association. His newest book, The Eight Master Lessons of Nature, will be released this October. Immediately following the keynote address, students will begin to deliver their presentations. They will be standing next to their displays, available to discuss their projects with passing visitors. Poster presentations will be featured in the Glacier Room with oral presentations located in the Academic Support Center. “This sixth annual RCCI Conference showcases and celebrates student creativity, discovery, and research,” said Craig. “Whether at the Juried Art Show, the Jazz Concert, the creative writing sessions, or the research posters and presentations, there is something wonderfully infectious to seeing our students’ achievements.” An ice cream social open to all guests and participants will round out the event at 3:30 p.m.
A sampling of this year’s presentations:
• Jennifer Downing, a student of Dr. Melissa Boehm, will focus on the ABC sitcom “American Housewife,” conducting rhetorical analysis on the correlation between body image and social class portrayed in the series. • Rusty Butler, a student of Dr. Lisa Kemmerer, will hold the first-ever RCCIC discussion forum highlighting ideas for an Environmental Policy in hopes of consideration and adoption by MSUB. • Shalese Gentry, a student of Dr. Jennifer Scroggins, has performed a content analysis of children’s toys in six stores in Billings to ascertain how often and to what degree gender stereotypes are used. For more information, visit http://www.msubillings.edu/ research/ or contact Director of the University Honors Program David Craig at (406) 657-2908.

He is also an alumnus of MSU Billings.
The Montana State University Billings Department of Art presents its 2019 Juried Student Exhibition, Autonomous Intersections, open to the public from April 4 to April 30. Nerves, sweat, and creativity all lead to the beginning of something amazing. Autonomous Intersections is an exhibition developed, designed, promoted, and run by the Department of Art students at MSU Billings. Twenty-six artists will display their works of art; all of which are MSUB students and have been accepted into the show by our region’s well-known curator, Bob Durden. The opening reception for Autonomous Intersections, MSUB’s 2019 Juried Student Exhibition, will be held at the Northcutt Steele Gallery on the campus of MSU Billings beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2019. It is catered, free to the public, and parking is free after 5 p.m. Awards will be presented at 6 p.m. The reception will be held in conjunction with MSUB’s annual Research, Creativity & Community Involvement Conference. The students responded to our call for art by submitting their best work from the last two years of classes. The results are a mixed medium mash-up with many independent ideas, more 3D works (sculpture, installation, and ceramics) than in the last two years combined, all connecting in a space truly worthy of exploration. Please Don’t Feed the Bears: Close Encounters with Yellowstone Wildlife
February 28 – December 28, 2019 The relationship between Yellowstone Park visitors and resident wildlife is a complicated one. At one time, visitors could pet and feed park animals including marmots, elk, and of course, the bear. Please Don’t Feed the Bears: Close Encounters with Yellowstone Wildlife tracks the park’s transition from a visitor playground where these interactions were encouraged to today’s wildlife preserve where visitor behavior is closely monitored. The exhibit is highly interactive and includes family-friendly activities. Special thanks to the National Park Service, MSU Billings Biology Department, Reliable Tent & Awning, The Base Camp, Billings West High School, and Amberly Whiteman.

Pioneer boardwalk town and main building are fully accessible. The ten-acre campus is on flat ground with boardwalks and grass paths. Please call with any special arrangement requests.
The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture tells the unique story of the Huntley Irrigation Project. With 10.4 acres, 18 homestead buildings, hundreds of farm implements, and thousands of other artifacts on display, the Museum interprets, preserves restores and portrays life on the Project from the early 1900s to the late 20th century. The display at Osborn Park has one of the largest collections of horse-drawn machinery, early sugar beet equipment, corn, grain and hay mowers. Other displays include a tar paper shack, 2 school houses, an early day doctor’s office, bank, and a horse barn made from sawed cottonwood. The Huntley Irrigation Project was the fifth U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project in the United States and opened June 26th, 1907. Staff gives custom guided tours year-round! From Labor Day until Memorial Day the museum is open from Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Expanded hours after Memorial Day for the summer. Summer hours are 9 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week. Tours Daily tours generally last 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. Staff can do an abbreviated tour for inclement weather or time constraints. Several times a year there are special tours. Visit in October for a haunted tour and in December for a candlelight tour. The museum also does group tours and school tours. Please call to schedule your tour today! The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis
and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.
