Enrichment Workshops

1 p.m. Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary 615 2nd Street East, Red Lodge Enrichment affords opportunities for our residents to explore, play, and problem solve. The right kind of enrichment increases the overall wellness of animals in captivity. However, these items take a great deal of time to create. You can be a part of working with Sanctuary staff in building enrichment items from various materials- retired fire hose, PVC pipes, and natural materials like willow. During this workshop, you will learn more about the different kinds of enrichment, and the types of behaviors our animal care staff look for when they evaluate enrichment. Due to the nature of these workshops, we ask that participants be ages 10 to adult. May 30

Huntley Project Museum

Universal Accessibility It is the goal to make the museum accessible to everyone. Public restrooms, located in the main building, are fully accessible. Pioneer boardwalk town and main building are fully accessible. The ten-acre campus is on flat ground with boardwalks and grass paths. Please call with any special arrangement requests.

The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture tells the unique story of the Huntley Irrigation Project. With 10.4 acres, 18 homestead buildings, hundreds of farm implements, and thousands of other artifacts on display, the Museum interprets, preserves restores and portrays life on the Project from the early 1900s to the late 20th century. The display at Osborn Park has one of the largest collections of horse-drawn machinery, early sugar beet equipment, corn, grain and hay mowers. Other displays include a tar paper shack, 2 school houses, an early day doctor’s office, bank, and a horse barn made from sawed cottonwood. The Huntley Irrigation Project was the fifth U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project in the United States and opened June 26th, 1907. Staff gives custom guided tours year-round! From Labor Day until Memorial Day the museum is open from Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Expanded hours after Memorial Day for the summer. Summer hours are 9 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week. Tours Daily tours generally last 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. Staff can do an abbreviated tour for inclement weather or time constraints. Several times a year there are special tours. Visit in October for a haunted tour and in December for a candlelight tour. The museum also does group tours and school tours. Please call to schedule your tour today! The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis

and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

Bats in Billings From the Montana Audubon Center.

With all of these mosquitoes around, it's a great time to cheer on the bats and other animals that eat them! Montana is home to 15 species of bats, 12 of which can be found in Yellowstone County. The most common is the Little Brown Bat (also called Little Brown Myotis), which is about the size of a swallow and zips around in the air catching insects at dusk. If you are near a pond or lake or ditch, really anywhere in Billings, you have a good chance of seeing one. Bats are well known for navigating via echolocation, emitting short, high-pitched calls that bounce off objects and give them an audio picture of the surrounding space. The closer they need to pay attention, the higher the frequency of sounds and the more detail they are able to hear. When going after prey, for example, Little Brown Bats can make up to 200 of these calls per second! The bat-themed programs at the Montana Audubon Center are some of our most popular, and the first of them, June 2018, saw a sold-out crowd. If you'd like to join in for our next one, make sure and register in advance - look for the registration link on our calendar page. https://mtaudubon.org/center/upcoming-programs-events/ While the program is free, registration is required.

South Park Easter Egg Hunt

Montana State University Billings is teaming up with the South Side Neighborhood Task Force for the Annual South Park Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 20 at 12 p.m. All are welcome to attend this family-friendly event. All children under the age of 12 may participate in the hunt for toys, candy, and many great prizes. MSU Billings is providing a number of student volunteers coordinated through the Center for Engagement to assist with the event. A costumed bunny will be on hand to take photos and interact with participants. Partnering with the South Side Neighborhood Task Force for this community egg hunt was a logical decision made by MSUB, which allows the university the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with a community partner and to not compete with other egg hunt opportunities in the area. Hop on over to South Park, located at South Broadway and 6th Avenue South for all the egg-citement! Audubon Center is a place to go! The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and

Please Don’t Feed the Bears: Close Encounters with Yellowstone Wildlife

February 28 – December 28, 2019 The relationship between Yellowstone Park visitors and resident wildlife is a complicated one. At one time, visitors could pet and feed park animals including marmots, elk, and of course, the bear. Please Don’t Feed the Bears: Close Encounters with Yellowstone Wildlife tracks the park’s transition from a visitor playground where these interactions were encouraged to today’s wildlife preserve where visitor behavior is closely monitored. The exhibit is highly interactive and includes family-friendly activities. Special thanks to the National Park Service, MSU Billings Biology Department, Reliable Tent & Awning, The Base Camp, Billings West High School, and Amberly Whiteman.

Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year. To get there: Turn south at the South Billings Boulevard exit off of I-90. Look for the sign on the right side of the road ¼ mile past the off-ramp. Drive down the gravel road and turn left through the gate just before the Norm’s Island Trailhead parking lot. Park in the large lot with the green tent and look for maps and information at the trailhead kiosk. To contact: 406-294-5099. www.mtaudubon.org/center.

The Historic Hardin Area

cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Museum and Visitor Center

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

Big Horn County

Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Bozeman Trail & Fort C. F. Smith

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 18631866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Enjoy the gift shop and interpretive exhibits 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily May-Sept., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct.-April. Admission is $Adult- $6, Seniors-$5, Student & Active Military $3, and 6 & under is free. For information about the museum and the area call 406-665-1671 or visit bighorncountymuseum.org.

Historic District

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. The District earned a listing on the National Historic Register in 1984. Call 406-629-0134 to schedule a walking tour. The Historic Preservation Office is in the depot. Big Horn County and Hardin information are also on the National Register data base.
