Much Ado About Nothing

Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” opens Friday, May 31st at NOVA Center for the Performing Arts. Directed by Katie Rehberg, this production promises to be a delight. With The Bard’s use of words, wit and wisdom, it matters not where the story takes place. In this case, Shakespeare’s characters find themselves in the Old West. A new spin on the story of unexpected love found, unrequited love assumed and all the hilarity of misunderstanding. Featuring local actors playing characters from “Hero” to “Dogberry” there is plenty to snicker and guffaw at. Join in the mischief and the fun May 31st, June 1st and 2nd and the following weekend June 7th, 8th and 9th at NOVA. Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30PM, Sundays, matinee at 2:00PM. Tickets are $21/adults, $16/seniors or military, $10/students. Please call or stop by the NOVA box office Tuesday-Friday 126pm at 406-591-9535 or go to http://www.novabillings.org Upcoming Events: Roald Dahl’s BFG – Three weekends during July, beginning Saturday, July 13th. A Youth Conservatory Production taking on a giant story. Tickets $16/adults, $10 for senior, military and students. NOVA’s 2019 Summer Theatre Camps -Grades kindergarten through 12, June through August. Acting, movement, voice, opera, improv. Prices range from $125 – $325. Register now before the slots fill up!

His captivity ended while working in a Japanese coal mine, just 80 miles from the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. Theige’s Guitar Show

Red Lodge, Montana – Beau Theige’s Guitars, a traveling exhibition organized by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association (NDAGA), will be loved by music enthusiasts (guitar players in particular), artists, and recyclers. The show is open to the public May 3 through June 23, 2019 in the Main Gallery. In conjunction with the exhibition, artist Beau Theige will be at the Guild from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2019 to talk to guests while demonstrating his work. The Closing Reception for the show will be Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 2- 4 p.m. with a brief artist talk at 3 p.m. These events are free and open to the public. Beau Theige, a husband, father, and hobby rancher on the windswept plains of North Dakota found his passion making guitars. Although Theige isn’t a guitar player he was instantly intrigued by this varied and unique craft to create hand-made guitars from everyday utilitarian objects, antiques, or plain old trash. He uses discarded items such as cake pans, license plates, and cigar boxes for inspiration. If you want to get trendy, it’s called “upcycling.” The pieces are half art and half junk but each one makes music. A couple of pieces in the show will be available for guests to play. This traveling exhibition is sponsored by the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association and supported in part by grants from the Montana Arts Council, the Coal Tax Trust Fund for Cultural and Aesthetic Projects, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The mission of the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is to support, inspire, and encourage all artists. Reaching out, the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery provides art education and exposure to the visual, performing and literary arts for the benefit of the broadest possible audience. Please Don’t Feed the Bears: Close Encounters with Yellowstone Wildlife

February 28 – December 28, 2019 The relationship between Yellowstone Park visitors and resident wildlife is a complicated one. At one time, visitors could pet and feed park animals including marmots, elk, and of course, the bear. Please Don’t Feed the Bears: Close Encounters with Yellowstone Wildlife tracks the park’s transition from a visitor playground where these interactions were encouraged to today’s wildlife preserve where visitor behavior is closely monitored. The exhibit is highly interactive and includes family-friendly activities. Special thanks to the National Park Service, MSU Billings Biology Department, Reliable Tent & Awning, The Base Camp, Billings West High School, and Amberly Whiteman.

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Welcome! Visitor’s Guide – 17

Crow & Northern Cheyenne Reservation Loop Busby

Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a Northern Cheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial.

Lame Deer

Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv.

Ashland

Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. The Museum and Gift Shop summer hours are: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend: Mon.Fri., 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Varied weekend hours. Tours of the facility are available. The St. Labre Museum is filled with Indian artifacts from all over the country. Adjacent to the museum is a Native American gift shop.

St. Labre Indian School & Museum

Founded in 1884 to serve the Northern Cheyenne Indians, St. Labre is located in the beautiful and historic Tongue River Valley, bounded by the Tongue River and the scenic Custer National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days.

In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Cheyennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides pre-school to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepeestyle church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes. The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis

and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.
