1 p.m. Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary 615 2nd Street East, Red Lodge Enrichment affords opportunities for our residents to explore, play, and problem solve. The right kind of enrichment increases the overall wellness of animals in captivity. However, these items take a great deal of time to create. You can be a part of working with Sanctuary staff in building enrichment items from various materials- retired fire hose, PVC pipes, and natural materials like a willow. During this workshop, you will learn more about the different kinds of enrichment, and the types of behaviors our animal care staff look for when they evaluate enrichment. Due to the nature of these workshops, we ask that participants be ages 10 to adult.

Playhouse Parade returns to Rimrock’s Center Court with a display of playhouses and the ultimate patio setup on Monday, April 29th through Saturday, June 9th. Registration begins May 1st. Register by calling (406) 446-1133, or visiting our gift shop. Each day campers will learn about different animals and how to draw them. The camp will provide an opportunity for the kids to draw animals they may never have seen up close before, like porcupines, bears, and birds of prey. Campers will work with pencils, colored pencils, pen & ink, pastels, and paints, and start from the beginning with each medium. The cost of the program is $140 for five half-days and covers all materials. No prior art experience is necessary. The art camp will be taught by Lindi O’Brien of Lindi’s Art Adventures. She is also an art teacher in Fromberg, taught art camps at the Carbon County Arts Guild and the Ava Art Center in Gillette. She also worked at ZooMontana as a keeper and did art camps there as well.

Chief Plenty Coups State Park Chief Plenty Coups State Park holds many attractions. Our Visitor Center hosts interactive exhibits about Crow culture and on the Chief’s life along with our book/gift shop. Chief Plenty Coups’ National Historic Landmark house and store are preserved. There is a ¾ of a mile walking trail that winds around the park going past the sacred spring, the Chief’s apple orchard, Pryor Creek, and the grave site for the chief, his wives and adopted daughter. Many people come to the sacred spring to enjoy the tranquillity. There are picnic areas with barbecues, a playground, and horseshoe pits for pleasant afternoon picnics. The creation of this State Park was part of Chief Plenty Coups’ dream to have a space where all peoples could come together to learn about each other. Chief Plenty Coups’ life encompassed a period of transition from nomadic to a sedentary way of life for the Crow Tribe. There is a rich history here, preserved and protected by the Crow Tribe and the State of Montana. The Park hosts several cultural community events throughout the year. There are programs at the Park on select day’s during the summer months, Day of Honor and Heritage Day during September. In addition to public-welcome events, Chief Plenty Coups State Park also hosts teacher trainings and school field trips with standards-based curriculum, as well as tours for groups. During the summer, the park is an excellent choice for a day trip, a stop on a further road trip to Yellowtail Dam, or a stop-over point for travellers heading into the Pryor Mountains. Birders enjoy the park in both summer and winter as the Park hosts a stunning variety in both seasons. Winter sport lovers come to the Park in the winter time to cross-country ski or snowshoe.

Prisoner of War: 28th Annual Billings Ben Steele’s Art Strawberry Festival May 16, 2019 – October 5, 2019 Western Heritage Center Steele, a Montana native, was a survivor of the Bataan Death March and 3 ½ years as a Japanese prisoner of war during World War II. Ben Steele’s original paintings and drawings chronicle his prisoner of war experience. Steele is one of thousands of American soldiers captured by the Japanese while defending the Philippines. Imprisoned in labor camps, the American and Filipino soldiers suffered terribly. His captivity ended while working in a Japanese coalmine, days after the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Tears in the Darkness, a 2009 New York Times bestseller, shares Ben Steele’s story incredible of survival. The paintings and drawings are on loan from the Montana Museum of Art & Culture, Missoula. The Charles M. Bair Family Trust is the exhibit sponsor.

The 28th annual Strawberry Festival will take place in downtown Billings under Skypoint at N. Broadway and 2nd Ave. N. from 8am-4pm on Saturday, June 8. The Strawberry Festival is downtown’s largest street festival and includes over 120 Arts & Crafts booths, food trucks, live entertainment, and a 65′ strawberry shortcake prepared by the Chefs & Cooks of Montana. The Strawberry Festival’s Arts & Crafts vendors come from around the region to showcase a collection of creations including photography, oil paintings, jewelry, textiles, woodwork, sculptures, glass, ceramics, garden art, and more. The festival also includes booths from local retailers and nonprofit organizations. The public can expect a wide variety of cuisine and beverages hosted by local and regional food trucks specializing in BBQ , Mexican, Pan Asian, German cuisine, shaved ice, and more. Always a crowd favorite, the Chefs and Cooks Association of Montana will once again assemble the 65ft Strawberry Shortcake. Nature Journaling

Red Lodge, Montana – On Saturday, June 1, 2019 artist Dominique Paulus will instruct a unique journaling workshop. From 8:30 am until 2 pm participants will learn to identify and sketch the wildflowers, trees, and wildlife they see on the trails at the Nordic Center in Red Lodge. The class will begin and end at the Arts Guild. Dominique will discuss nature journaling and how to gather and use the information for future studio art making. If the weather is inclement, we will work from resources found at the Arts Guild. All skill levels will be able to participate. We ask students to wear comfortable clothes, bring a hat, sunscreen, bottle of water, snacks or bag lunch, and if possible a portable chair. Art supplies will be provided. Space is limited to 8. The Hardin Area Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 1863-1866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo

The 101st Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 14-19, 2019 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, Crow Fair begins on the third Thursday in August and attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

The Crow Fair Rodeo is sponsored annually by the Crow Nation. The rodeo is a daily feature at the Crow Fair, offering a full day’s entertainment of youth events, professional Indian cowboys and cowgirls, and horse racing. Rodeos occur throughout the United States, through the various rodeo associations like the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The Northern Plains Indian Rodeo Association, organized under the Indian National Finals Rodeo, is the current association that sanctions the rodeo event. The Rodeo is held at the Edison Real Bird Memorial Complex, in Crow Agency, Montana. The rodeo arena, race track, stables, and campgrounds are all part of this complex. Mark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo at Crow Agency in August. Besides the pow-wow, there are many other attractions. Each year the fair holds a parade, which winds its way through the campsites. A large number of women on horseback using oldstyle saddles (many family heirlooms) of bone and rawhide, ride in the parade. The parade begins each morning of the Fair at ten o’clock. The Color Guard leads the parade with retired veterans and active members of the armed services. Following the Color Guard are the President, Vice-President, and First Vice-President of the Crow Fair. The President carries the American Flag. In the past, the royalty of the Crow Nation would follow the Presidents; however, in modern parades the Crow Tribal Officials replace Crow royalty. The parade includes contests for best traditional dress in more than half a dozen categories. Riders on horseback were followed by elaborately decorated cars, trucks and trailers. Some of the vehicles are decorated in memorial to tribal elders who have passed during the prior year. Others carry multiple generations from elders to newborns. Princesses, ranging in age from preschool to 18, ride along the route, on horseback or by vehicle, wearing traditional, elaborate dress with perfect, modest poise.

The Crow Fair Pow Wow is much like pow wows throughout the west, except for more emphasis on traditional dance styles. You can pick out [the Crow tribe’s style] from hundreds of dancers because the dress ways are the same as the turn of the last century. The only additions are material things to decorate their regalia. The pow wow grand entry begins at 1 p.m. sharp. It is led by the veteran honor guard, followed by all the dancers who will participate in the contests that have been held throughout the week. The announcer introduces competing drum groups that surround the arbor, each taking a turn keeping the beat. In addition to the Crow people, members of other tribes come to dance and sing and sell their goods on the midway that surrounds the arbor. Dance contests, with substantial prize money, are held throughout the week with participants ranging in age from preschool to elders.

Huntley Project Museum Universal Accessibility It is the goal to make the museum accessible to everyone. Public restrooms, located in the main building, are fully accessible. Pioneer boardwalk town and main building are fully accessible. The ten-acre campus is on flat ground with boardwalks and grass paths. Please call with any special arrangement requests.

The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture tells the unique story of the Huntley Irrigation Project. With 10.4 acres, 18 homestead buildings, hundreds of farm implements, and thousands of other artifacts on display, the Museum interprets, preserves restores and portrays life on the Project from the early 1900s to the late 20th century. The display at Osborn Park has one of the largest collections of horse-drawn machinery, early sugar beet equipment, corn, grain and hay mowers. Other displays include a tar paper shack, 2 school houses, an early day doctor’s office, bank, and a horse barn made from sawed cottonwood. The Huntley Irrigation Project was the fifth U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project in the United States and opened June 26th, 1907. Staff gives custom guided tours year-round! From Labor Day until Memorial Day the museum is open from Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Expanded hours after Memorial Day for the summer. Summer hours are 9 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week. Tours Daily tours generally last 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. Staff can do an abbreviated tour for inclement weather or time constraints. Several times a year there are special tours. The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis

and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.
