June 7th Artwalk Fetes The Arrival Of Early Summer

ARTWALK DOWNTOWN BILLINGS fetes the arrival of early Summer in downtown Billings on Friday, June 7th, 2019. The second of six events in its 25th Anniversary Season, the June ArtWalk line-up includes 30 Season Members (open for all six events) and six One-Time Participants. One Time Participants and artists in the June ArtWalk include: High Plains Women’s History Museum (Rabbit Knows Gun), Limber Tree Yoga Studio (Nikki Shiva and friends), 2905 Montana (Meliah Bell and Taqbeth Rindahl), The Post @ Billings Depot (Morning Star Senior Living), WellPared Juice Bar and Eatery ( Janelle DuBray) and Togs Studio (Megan Fetters and Nathan Satran). All ArtWalk locations are free and open between 5 – 9 p.m. Kirks Grocery at 2920 Minnesota Avenue offers “afterArtWalk” music. For 25 years, ArtWalk has focused on creating a community of artists, skilled artisans, studios and fine art galleries in downtown Billings and the surrounding region. ArtWalk started with a handful of Montana Avenue galleries in 1994. It has grown into a a “not-to-miss” event that engages artists of all ages, art patrons, visitors, friends, and families. Gallery notes, images, a downloadable map and more information are available at www.artwalkbillings.com. ArtWalks are organized, sustained and paid for by Season Members, One-Time Participants and Sponsors. Some Season Members have been with the ArtWalk since it began. Others have joined recently, seeing the value ArtWalk brings to their operations and the importance of the strong arts community it has generated. A proven economic driver, ArtWalk brings visitors and dollars into the downtown core. Many locations offer music and refreshments. Featured artists often greet visitors, discuss their art and the creative process. Downtown on-street metered parking is free during ArtWalk. Parking garage rates vary. Subsequent ArtWalk events are scheduled for the first Fridays of August, October, and December 2019 and February 2020. Strawberry Festival The Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) and presenting sponsor Rocky Mountain Bank are proud to bring the 28th annual Strawberry Festival. The Strawberry Festival takes place on Saturday, June 8th, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. This community event begins with a public pancake breakfast fundraiser hosted by the Billings Heights Lions Club beginning at 7:30am at the corner of 2nd Ave N. and N. 29th St. The Strawberry festival is Billings’ largest street festival and includes Arts & Craft vendor booths, food trucks, free kids crafts, a bungee jump, balloon twisters, and live entertainment under downtown’s Skypoint sculpture at N. Broadway and 2nd Ave N., which ends with a 3:00pm string performance by members of the Billings Symphony Orchestra. Always a crowd favorite, the Chefs and Cooks of Montanawith both help and donations from Albertsons, Passages, Sysco Montana, and Morningstar Senior Living- will assemble the 60 foot Strawberry Shortcake on-site for the community to see. The largest Strawberry Shortcake in Yellowstone County has been part of the Strawberry Festival for 15 years and Carl Kurokawa, owner of Juliano’s, has overseen the creation of the shortcake at the festival every year since his initial idea of a community food fight morphed into the large community shortcake.
Carl explains: “We create this shortcake for the community. We started making it because we wanted to create something that would bring joy and celebration to the children and families in billings.” This year the shortcake will be set-up on 2nd Ave N. just east of Skypoint between N. 27th and Broadway. The community can enjoy a slice of the shortcake by purchasing a $2 ticket from the shortcake ticket booth as early as 10:00am. The shortcake will be served beginning at 12:00pm. Proceeds are split between the Chefs and Cooks of Montana’s scholarship program and the Business Improvement District's street beautification projects. The Kid’s Area, sponsored by Wise Wonders Children's Museum, located on N. 29th St., just north of 1st Ave. N. The Kid’s Area will include a pinwheel craft station, coloring opportunities, and a corn-hole bean bag toss. Montana Premier Entertainment will have a four-person bungee trampoline up and ready for anyone from 30lb to 220lbs to enjoy five fun minutes of gravity defying jumps for $5. Wise Wonders Children’s Museum will be open with free admission during the festival.

The Hardin Area Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 1863-1866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. The 101st Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 14-19, 2019 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, Crow Fair begins on the third Thursday in August and attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

The Crow Fair Rodeo is sponsored annually by the Crow Nation. The rodeo is a daily feature at the Crow Fair, offering a full day’s entertainment of youth events, professional Indian cowboys and cowgirls, and horse racing. Rodeos occur throughout the United States, through the various rodeo associations like the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The Northern Plains Indian Rodeo Association, organized under the Indian National Finals Rodeo, is the current association that sanctions the rodeo event. The Rodeo is held at the Edison Real Bird Memorial Complex, in Crow Agency, Montana. The rodeo arena, race track, stables, and campgrounds are all part of this complex. Mark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo at Crow Agency in August. Parade at Crow Fair, Crow Agency by Montana Office of Tourism and Business Development
Besides the pow-wow, there are many other attractions. Each year the fair holds a parade, which winds its way through the campsites. A large number of women on horseback using oldstyle saddles (many family heirlooms) of bone and rawhide, ride in the parade. The parade begins each morning of the Fair at ten o’clock. The Color Guard leads the parade with retired veterans and active members of the armed services. Following the Color Guard are the President, Vice-President, and First Vice-President of the Crow Fair. The President carries the American Flag. In the past, the royalty of the Crow Nation would follow the Presidents; however, in modern parades the Crow Tribal Officials replace Crow royalty. The parade includes contests for best traditional dress in more than half a dozen categories. Riders on horseback were followed by elaborately decorated cars, trucks and trailers. Some of the vehicles are decorated in memorial to tribal elders who have passed during the prior year. Others carry multiple generations from elders to newborns. Princesses, ranging in age from preschool to 18, ride along the route, on horseback or by vehicle, wearing traditional, elaborate dress with perfect, modest poise.
Crow Fair Pow Wow
The Crow Fair Pow Wow is much like pow wows throughout the west, except for more emphasis on traditional dance styles. You can pick out [the Crow tribe’s style] from hundreds of dancers because the dress ways are the same as the turn of the last century. The only additions are material things to decorate their regalia. The pow wow grand entry begins at 1 p.m. sharp. It is led by the veteran honor guard, followed by all the dancers who will participate in the contests that have been held throughout the week. The announcer introduces competing drum groups that surround the arbor, each taking a turn keeping the beat. In addition to the Crow people, members of other tribes come to dance and sing and sell their goods on the midway that surrounds the arbor. Dance contests, with substantial prize money, are held throughout the week with participants ranging in age from preschool to elders.
