Enrichment Workshops

1 p.m. Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary 615 2nd Street East, Red Lodge Enrichment affords opportunities for our residents to explore, play, and problem solve. The right kind of enrichment increases the overall wellness of animals in captivity. However, these items take a great deal of time to create. You can be a part of working with Sanctuary staff in building enrichment items from various materials- retired fire hose, PVC pipes, and natural materials like a willow. During this workshop, you will learn more about the different kinds of enrichment, and the types of behaviors our animal care staff look for when they evaluate enrichment. Due to the nature of these workshops, we ask that participants be ages 10 to adult. June 26

NOVA Center 2019-2020 Season NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, located on historic Montana Avenue, announces its seventh season of theater and music. Whether you prefer to be part of a production, attend and watch some or all of the productions, or support community theater in Billings, your enthusiasm and participation are greatly appreciated! The artistic committee of NOVA Center for the Performing Arts and Managing Producer Dodie Rife announce NOVA’s 2019-2020 season! NOVA has a full slate of productions to encourage its season theme of “Engage, Challenge, and Inspire.” The upcoming season opens a new decade, providing ten entertaining and challenging productions, including a wide variety of plays: “A Christmas Carol,” a double feature “No Exit” along with locally written “Free Birdie,” and “An Evening with Sherlock Holmes”; musicals: “Inside Out” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”; three youth productions: “The Jungle Book,” “Treasure Island” and “The Borrowers”; as well as two opera productions: “The Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart and the Festival of One-Act Operas, featuring “Sister Angelica” by Puccini and “The Impresario” by Mozart. • NOVA Center for the Performing Arts sets the tone for the season with the creative and imaginative Rudyard Kipling classic, “The Jungle Book” (Oct. 4-6, 11-13). Mowgli, the young human raised by wolves, has to learn to survive in the dangers of the jungle including Shere Khan, the tiger. • The boisterous, comic opera, “The Marriage of Figaro” (Nov. 8 -10, 15-17) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been a favorite for all audiences since 1786. Come and see the updated version, by Director Douglas Nagel. • Despite the haunting three ghosts, the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol” (Dec. 6-8, 13-15) is always a holiday favorite. Come and see the redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge on stage at NOVA. • NOVA opens 2020 with a sharp eye towards challenging the audience with a double feature of short plays, “No Exit,”

written by Jean-Paul Sartre, and “Free Birdie,” written and directed by Billings’ own DeLaney Hardy Ray ( Jan. 1012, 17-19). • Watch for clues and intrigue as “An Evening with Sherlock Holmes” ( Jan. 31-Feb 9) is staged. This play is a triad of one-act mysteries. • The Rankin File production, presented in honor of Jeanette Rankin, is “Inside Out” (Feb.28-March 1, March 6-8), directed by Michelle Berger. This musical offers engaging, challenging, and inspiring female characters. • Ahoy! The musical adventure, “Treasure Island,” (March 27-29, April 5-7) sails onto the NOVA stage with a cast of young people ready to swash and buckle your funny bone. • The month of May brings about the Festival of One-Act Operas with “Sister Angelica” by Puccini and the comedic “The Impresario” by Mozart (May 1-3, 7-10). • William Shakespeare, the Bard, beckons the long days of summer with the witty and fantastical “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” ( June 5-7, 12-14). • The season closes with a little story about big hearted folk with “The Borrowers” ( July 17-19, 23-26). NOVA Center for the Performing Arts’ 2019-2020 season includes four fundraisers: Reds, Whites, & Brews (September 7); Auction of Arias (November 3); Love of the HeArts (February 14); and OperaFest (April 25). The 2019-2020 season is filled with engaging stories that both challenge and inspire. Don’t miss ALL that NOVA has to offer. NOVA Center for the Performing Arts box office hours are Tuesday through Friday 12-6 P.M. Volunteers are always welcome. If you are interested in volunteering, learning more about the upcoming season, using the facility for your own event or presentation, please contact NOVA’s box office at 406.591.9535 or visit: www.novabillings.org.

Tippet Rise Art Center Fourth Season Fishtail, MT, June 20, 2019—On July 5, 2019, Tippet Rise Art Center will open for its fourth season of classical music concerts and tours of its monumental outdoor sculptures and architectural structures. This year, visitors can also explore a new scenic pavilion, Xylem, designed by the celebrated architect Francis Kéré. The pavilion is the first site-specific commission to be added to the art center’s collection since Tippet Rise opened in 2016.

Xylem, Designed by Francis Kéré World-renowned architect Francis Kéré has designed Tippet Rise’s new 2,100-square-foot pavilion, Xylem, drawing inspiration from the wooden and straw toguna structures sacred in Dogon communities in West Africa. Nestled in a grove of aspen and cottonwood trees beside Grove Creek and the art center’s central campus, Xylem is constructed of locally and sustainably sourced ponderosa and lodgepole pine and features a canopy of vertical logs, which filters shafts of light onto the seating areas. The seating elements’ organic shapes are inspired in part by abstract paintings that artist and Tippet Rise co-founder Cathy Halstead created based on forms of microscopic life, in addition to the sinuous topography of the surrounding hills. Visitors to Tippet Rise may gather within Xylem to converse or contemplate the views, or sit and meditate in solitude. Future plans for the pavilion include poetry readings and musical performances. Music at the Art Center The summer’s concert season begins July 12 and continues for seven weeks, through September 7, 2019. The 2019 concert season brings together accomplished artists and up-andcoming stars for 23 recitals and chamber music performances, spanning more than four centuries of repertoire. Highlights include world premieres of John Luther Adams’s Lines Made By Walking (String Quartet No. 5), a Tippet Rise commission performed by the JACK Quartet, and three compositions by BBC Music Magazine’s 2018 Newcomer Award Winner and pianist Julien Brocal, who returns to the art center for his second season. Other artists returning to Tippet Rise include celebrated pianist Behzod Abduraimov, the Rolston String Quartet, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, and Jenny Chen, who recently made her Carnegie Hall debut and has performed at the art center every year since the inaugural season. A special festival weekend will be held August 23-25, featuring Tippet Rise’s Artistic Advisor, the renowned pianist Pedja Muzijevic, joined by seven musicians—Benjamin Beilman, Jennifer Frautschi, Ayane Kozasa, Anthony Manzo, Nathan Schram, James Austin Smith, and Sćunn Thorsteinsdóttir. Tippet Rise will cap the season by welcoming members of Ensemble Connect, a two-year fellowship program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. Piano duo Anderson & Roe will perform the summer’s final concert. Performances take place in the 150-seat Olivier Music Barn, its scale and proportions inspired by the intimate and acoustically pristine concert spaces of the 18th century where Haydn’s and Mozart’s works were performed. Weather

permitting, Saturday morning concerts take place at the openair Domo (2016), a 98 -foot-long, 16-foot-tall, acoustically rich sculptural structure designed by Ensamble Studio. Pre-concert talks are presented Friday and Saturday evenings at Tiara, a 100-seat outdoor acoustic shell. Season Four’s concert tickets sold out through a randomized drawing. Tickets that are returned to the box office will be placed for sale on the Events page of the Tippet Rise website the week of the ticketed concert, and will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. Tickets are $10 each, free to anyone 21 and under. For those who are unable to attend concerts in person, recorded performances are added regularly to the Tippet Rise website and to the art center’s YouTube channel. Other happenings, such as art workshops and concerts for children will be added to the Events page through the summer and fall. Land Art and Architecture at Tippet Rise The new pavilion by Francis Kéré joins other large-scale works at Tippet Rise. Site-specific artworks set within the landscape include two other sculptural structures by the innovative Ensamble Studio: the 25-foot-tall Beartooth Portal (2015), composed of two vertical rocklike forms that lean together at the top, and the similarly designed 26-foot-tall Inverted Portal (2016). Tippet Rise is also home to Daydreams (2015) by Patrick Dougherty and Satellite #5: Pioneer (2016) by Stephen Talasnik. Also set in the landscape are two monumental works by the internationally renowned sculptor Mark di Suvero, Beethoven’s Quartet (2003) and Proverb (2002), and two works by Alexander Calder on loan from the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Two Discs (1965) and Stainless Stealer (1966). Two works by Modernist painter Isabelle Johnson, an original owner of part of the land on which the art center is situated, have been acquired by Tippet Rise and hang in the Olivier Music Barn. Additionally, two smaller works by Stephen Talasnik frame the Olivier Music Barn’s performance space—Galaxy (2014) and Archeology (2012). Sculpture Tours at the Art Center Visitors can tour the 12,000-acre working ranch and its outdoor sculptures and architectural structures via 10.5 miles of hiking and biking trails, or by shuttle van. Tours via shuttle van are $10 each, free to those 21 and under and are available first-come, first-serve (space is limited). Hiking and biking at the art center are free for everyone; however, registration via the Tippet Rise Tours page online is required for admission for all tours. Getting to the Art Center Located in Stillwater County, Tippet Rise is approximately one hour southwest of Billings, two hours southeast of Bozeman, and two-and-a-half hours north of Yellowstone National Park. All visitors to the art center must have concert tickets or have registered for a tour, workshop or other event via the Tippet Rise website.

Big Horn County

Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

11

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 1863-1866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo

The 101st Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 14-19, 2019 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, Crow Fair begins on the third Thursday in August and attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo

Crow Fair Rodeo

Welcome! Visitor’s Guide – 17

The Crow Fair Rodeo is sponsored annually by the Crow Nation. The rodeo is a daily feature at the Crow Fair, offering a full day’s entertainment of youth events, professional Indian cowboys and cowgirls, and horse racing. Rodeos occur throughout the United States, through the various rodeo associations like the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The Northern Plains Indian Rodeo Association, organized under the Indian National Finals Rodeo, is the current association that sanctions the rodeo event. The Rodeo is held at the Edison Real Bird Memorial Complex, in Crow Agency, Montana. The rodeo arena, race track, stables, and campgrounds are all part of this complex. Mark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo at Crow Agency in August. Parade at Crow Fair, Crow Agency by Montana Office of Tourism and Business Development

Besides the pow-wow, there are many other attractions. Each year the fair holds a parade, which winds its way through the campsites. A large number of women on horseback using oldstyle saddles (many family heirlooms) of bone and rawhide, ride in the parade. The parade begins each morning of the Fair at ten o’clock. The Color Guard leads the parade with retired veterans and active members of the armed services. Following the Color Guard are the President, Vice-President, and First Vice-President of the Crow Fair. The President carries the American Flag. In the past, the royalty of the Crow Nation would follow the Presidents; however, in modern parades the Crow Tribal Officials replace Crow royalty. The parade includes contests for best traditional dress in more than half a dozen categories. Riders on horseback were followed by elaborately decorated cars, trucks and trailers. Some of the vehicles are decorated in memorial to tribal elders who have passed during the prior year. Others carry multiple generations from elders to newborns. Princesses, ranging in age from preschool to 18, ride along the route, on horseback or by vehicle, wearing traditional, elaborate dress with perfect, modest poise.

Crow Fair Pow Wow

The Crow Fair Pow Wow is much like pow wows throughout the west, except for more emphasis on traditional dance styles. You can pick out [the Crow tribe’s style] from hundreds of dancers because the dress ways are the same as the turn of the last century. The only additions are material things to decorate their regalia. The pow wow grand entry begins at 1 p.m. sharp. It is led by the veteran honor guard, followed by all the dancers who will participate in the contests that have been held throughout the week. The announcer introduces competing drum groups that surround the arbor, each taking a turn keeping the beat. In addition to the Crow people, members of other tribes come to dance and sing and sell their goods on the midway that surrounds the arbor. Dance contests, with substantial prize money, are held throughout the week with participants ranging in age from preschool to elders.

ZooMontana

ZooMontana is a 70-acre wildlife park located in Billings, Montana. As Montana’s only zoo and botanical park, we focus on wildlife native to Montana, the Rockies, and other cold temperature regions at or above the 45th Parallel. Indoor habitats include animals from around the world. Canyon Creek runs through the center of the zoo’s grounds, creating a natural and tranquil park-like setting.

Audubon Center is a place to go!

The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year. To get there: Turn south at the South Billings Boulevard exit off of I-90. Look for the sign on the right side of the road ¼ mile past the off-ramp. Drive down the gravel road and turn left through the gate just before the Norm’s Island Trailhead parking lot. Park in the large lot with the green tent and look for maps and information at the trailhead kiosk. To contact: 406-294-5099. www.mtaudubon.org/center.
