Author Event: Rick Bonogofsky

5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. This House of Books 224 N. Broadway Rick Bonogofsky, whom you met at the beginning of May, returns to This House of Books with his most recently published post-apocalyptic urban fantasy novel on Friday, July 12, at 5:30. Rick will read from this book, THE ARCHANGEL, and take questions from the audience. Afterward, he will be available to sign copies of the book. The Archangel begins in Earth’s distant past, in the time of the pharaohs of old. Hell is ruled by Osiris and his new bride, Isis, and they have been expecting a baby. Enter Artemis, the enigmatic archangel and the god of Order. This is the story of his life leading up to the pivotal Third World War that sparked the series. Join Artemis and his friends as he engages with the people of Heaven, Hell, and Earth. This is the story of how he came to be an archangel and a god. This is the first part of the prequel to THE DEMON and explores just who Artemis is, and how the war began. This event is free and open to all. Friday evening parking downtown (after 5) is also free. The BFG and Sophie team up to save the children of England from the child-eating giants, Bloodbottler, Fleshlumpeater, Bonecruncher, Meatdripper, Childchewer, and Gizzardgulper. Summer Events for Kids: What’s Bugging You?

2 p.m. – 3 p.m. This House of Books, 224 N. Broadway In her charming and inimitable style, Marian Kirst will reveal the lovable aspects of insects and invertebrates on July 15 at 2 o’clock. So many of us grew up at least mildly afraid of insects and spiders, but she treasures them. When she talks about them, her tireless enthusiasm about insects and, indeed, all of nature affects everyone around her. Moreover, she understands how important it is for human beings to make up our minds to get along with insects and spiders. Her message could hardly be more important to us if humans are to survive as a species. Marian is an outstanding teacher, one who fills those who get to know her with a profound appreciation for the life around us. Also, she’ll bring bugs for us to look at. This event is free and open to the public. The activities are geared for elementary students, but children younger and older will have an enjoyable time and are always welcome. --Parking-During the week, your best bet for finding a nearby parking space is to try one of the nearby parking garages. Park 3 near the corner of Second Ave N. and North 27th street is nearest, about two blocks from our door and featuring the marvelous mural of Billings History by Terri Porta.

Big Sky State Games Opening Ceremonies

5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. Daylis Stadium 425 Grand Ave No matter where you finish, Opening Ceremonies is the place to start. Opening Ceremonies of the 34th Annual Big Sky State Games will be a colorful evening packed with exciting family entertainment! We will have our Soaked run, stage entertainment, the Parade of Athletes, a performance of our National Anthem, the Torch Lighting with Olympic Judo Bronze medalist Marti Malloy, and run the Montana Mile. Other happenings include a Fun Fair, climbing wall, autographs with an Olympic athlete, sponsor booths, sports demonstrations, athlete t-shirt pick up, souvenir sales, and other interactive events. The gates at Daylis Stadium will open at 5:30 p.m. on July 19. Parking near Daylis Stadium is limited, so park with ease at the YMCA and ride the shuttle to the stadium! Admission is $5 and free to children 6 and under. Athletes are admitted with their Opening Ceremonies ticket (postcard), mailed before the Games. July 19

Chief Plenty Coups State Park Chief Plenty Coups State Park holds many attractions. Our Visitor Center hosts interactive exhibits about Crow culture and on the Chief’s life along with our book/gift shop. Chief Plenty Coups’ National Historic Landmark house and store are preserved. There is a ¾ of a mile walking trail that winds around the park going past the sacred spring, the Chief’s apple orchard, Pryor Creek, and the grave site for the chief, his wives and adopted daughter. Many people come to the sacred spring to enjoy the tranquillity. There are picnic areas with barbecues, a playground, and horseshoe pits for pleasant afternoon picnics. The creation of this State Park was part of Chief Plenty Coups’ dream to have a space where all peoples could come together to learn about each other. Chief Plenty Coups’ life encompassed a period of transition from nomadic to a sedentary way of life for the Crow Tribe. There is a rich history here, preserved and protected by the Crow Tribe and the State of Montana. The Park hosts several cultural community events throughout the year. There are programs at the Park on select day’s during the summer months, Day of Honor and Heritage Day during September. In addition to public-welcome events, Chief Plenty Coups State Park also hosts teacher trainings and school field trips with standards-based curriculum, as well as tours for groups. During the summer, the park is an excellent choice for a day trip, a stop on a further road trip to Yellowtail Dam, or a stop-over point for travellers heading into the Pryor Mountains. Birders enjoy the park in both summer and winter as the Park hosts a stunning variety in both seasons. Winter sport lovers come to the Park in the winter time to cross-country ski or snowshoe.

Summerfair 41 at Rimrock Mall July 12: 4-9 p.m. July 13: 10 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. July 14: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Summerfair is the region’s largest arts & crafts festival featuring some of the best artisans, craftspeople, and entertainers in the area. This exciting event attracts more than 10,000 people over three days and is a wonderful way to share the joy of art with friends and family. Summerfair is one of the largest annual

fundraising events for the Museum’s education programs and yearly operating costs. More than 100 artists, community groups, and food vendors will participate every year. PARKING IS LIMITED Park with ease at the YMCA and ride the shuttle to the stadium. 2019 TORCH LIGHTER: MARTI MALLOY Olympic Bronze Medalist Marti Malloy will be the special guest athlete of the 34th Annual Big Sky State Games Opening Ceremonies Friday, July 19 at Wendy’s Field at Daylis Stadium in Billings. The two –time Judo Olympian (2012 and 2016) will speak and light the Big Sky State Games Calderon, officially kicking off Montana’s 2019 State Games. Malloy won USA Judo’s second ever Olympic medal by an American female in 2012. After losing in the last seven seconds of the Olympic semifinal, Malloy, a first time Olympian, came back with a powerful throw to beat the reigning Olympic Champion who was ranked Number 2 in the world at the time, capturing the Bronze Medal in the women’s judo 57 kg class. “It’s the hardest thing in the world to come back,” Malloy said. “You want to be mad and angry and upset, but my coach pulled me aside and said, "You came here to win. You lost a close match and if you really want to win you’re going to totally change your mindset and come back and focus on the bronze.” Malloy is a 2016 Grand Prix Cancun and 2017 Grand Prix Havana Gold Medalist and a Bronze Medal winner at the 2017 Pan American Senior Championships. During the Big Sky State Games weekend Malloy will also conduct a Judo Clinic, on Saturday, July 20 following the State Games TaeKwondo and Judo competition at Huntley Project High School in Worden. Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 1863-1866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. Crow & Northern Cheyenne Reservation Loop Busby

Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a Northern Cheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial.

Lame Deer

Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv.

Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. The Museum and Gift Shop summer hours are: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend: Mon.Fri., 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. After Labor Day, hours are Mon.-Fri., 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Varied weekend hours. Tours of the facility are available. The St. Labre Museum is filled with Indian artifacts from all over the country. Adjacent to the museum is a Native American gift shop.

St. Labre Indian School & Museum

Founded in 1884 to serve the Northern Cheyenne Indians, St. Labre is located in the beautiful and historic Tongue River Valley, bounded by the Tongue River and the scenic Custer National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days.

In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Cheyennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides pre-school to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepeestyle church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.

Huntley Project Museum Universal Accessibility It is the goal to make the museum accessible to everyone. Public restrooms, located in the main building, are fully accessible. Pioneer boardwalk town and main building are fully accessible. The ten-acre campus is on flat ground with boardwalks and grass paths. Please call with any special arrangement requests.

The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture tells the unique story of the Huntley Irrigation Project. With 10.4 acres, 18 homestead buildings, hundreds of farm implements, and thousands of other artifacts on display, the Museum interprets, preserves restores and portrays life on the Project from the early 1900s to the late 20th century. The display at Osborn Park has one of the largest collections of horse-drawn machinery, early sugar beet equipment, corn, grain and hay mowers. Other displays include a tar paper shack, 2 school houses, an early day doctor’s office, bank, and a horse barn made from sawed cottonwood. The Huntley Irrigation Project was the fifth U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project in the United States and opened June 26th, 1907. Staff gives custom guided tours year-round! From Labor Day until Memorial Day the museum is open from Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Expanded hours after Memorial Day for the summer. Summer hours are 9 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week. Tours Daily tours generally last 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. Staff can do an abbreviated tour for inclement weather or time constraints. Several times a year there are special tours. The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis

and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.
