St Johns Summer Concert Series

Corner of Rimrock & Shiloh Thursday, August 8, 2019, at 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. St. John’s Summer Concert Series is a FREE concert series put on by St. John’s Lutheran Ministries for the benefit of the community of Billings, Montana. Established in 1998, the series annually attracts 7,500 music lovers to the Fred & Marie Miller Pavilion on the campus of St. John’s Lutheran Ministries during five consecutive Thursday evenings. The series begins on Thursday, June 25th. Opening performers start at 6 with the featured performer beginning at 7. St. John’s is located at the corner of Shiloh Rd and Rimrock Rd...3940 Rimrock Road. Parking is located on the St. John’s campus, and it is also free. Shuttle service runs throughout the night to transport concert-goers to/from the parking area. People can even walk it in just a few blocks. Handicapped parking is available - enter campus through the main entrance off Rimrock Road, and you will be directed to accessible parking areas. In addition to our fabulous St. John’s catering, we will feature a “food court” area offering a variety of foods from local vendors. August 9

For more than a century, Montana has supplied a rich vein of entertainment and personality—from daredevils to dancers and even mimes. Treasure

State stars Gary Cooper, and Myrna Loy found unparalleled success during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Comedian Gilbert “Pee Wee” Holmes, born in Miles City in 1895, played sidekick to such stars as Tom Mix. One-time Butte resident Julian Eltinge went on to become America’s first famous female impersonator. There was Taylor Gordon, whose golden voice propelled the son of a slave from White Sulphur Springs to Harlem Renaissance fame. From the little-known Robyn Adair to the everpopular Michelle Williams, author Brian D’Ambrosio marks Big Sky Country’s long-standing connections with America’s performing arts. August 9

Join entomologists Ralph Scott and Marian Kirst for a microbrew-fueled journey into the world of insects at night. We’ll start with a brief lecture on the amazing adaptations that invertebrates use to navigate the nighttime world. Then we’ll use a variety of techniques - including spotlighting, black lighting and sugaring - to attract and hunt for fascinating insects and spiders, all while enjoying some local brews from Gally’s Brewing Co. in Harlowton! Downtown Dog Days of Summer

10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Downtown Billings 116 N 29th St., Suite A To make steps towards a more petfriendly downtown, the Downtown Billings Alliance is partnering with Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter to bring you Dog Days of Summer! Once a week on Fridays from Aug. 9 - 30, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., we will have adoptable pups from YVAS at the Downtown Billings office. Socialize and play with the dogs if you need a mid-day mood booster, make dog toys from recycled event T-shirts, and possibly go home with a new furry family member! Quality of Life Run

8 a.m. – 10 a.m. We are excited to offer a new course this year in partnership with our beneficiary, Billings TrailNet! All funds raised from the 2019 Quality of Life Run will directly benefit Billings TrailNet to support their fundraising efforts for the construction of a crucial 730-foot segment of the currently unconnected trail near Zimmerman Park.

The flat, fast and family-friendly new course will begin in the upper lot of MetraPark and lead runners along the Jim Dutcher Trail alongside the Yellowstone River towards Medicine Crow Middle School. Participants can run jog or walk the course that connects participants from the Metra to the appropriate turn around all along with the beautiful Billings Heritage Trail system. This annual run features two courses -- a 2-mile and a 5-mile route. The 5-mile route will begin at 8 a.m. with the 2 miles starting at 8:15. It’s a perfect event for the whole family. Sign up as a team with your friends and family and come out to support a great cause. Corporate teams also are available. Kids 13 and under can register for just $15, while all others are $20. All participants will receive their choice of a long-sleeve t-shirt or a short-sleeve athletic performance shirt, along with some cool swag! All runners will also receive discounted admission into the Montana Fair on the day of the run with their bib. The Billings Association of Realtors® organizes the run. There’s always lots of fun at MontanaFair. This year we are spicing things up with a few contests of our own. First, there’s Timesquare Furniture Rocks at MontanaFair. Painted rocks are cool and crafty. You’ll find these rocks all over the MontanaFair grounds. (The rocks will not be in any food area or in any carnival equipment.) Find a painted rock and bring it to the Art Barn for your chance to win a $100 gift certificate to Timesquare Furniture.

Billings Motorcycle Club designs, builds, and puts on a great show in front of the Northern Hotel Grandstands each year. Supercross has all age participants jumping over the moguls and off the ramps to the delight of the largest audience of the year in the Grandstands. Each year it takes over 100 hours of time to put the dirt in place to make for an exciting show. This year, BMC has new staff working on the design and build of the tracks. More than 100 riders will take to the track starting at 6pm on Tuesday, August 13 at MontanaFair.

Lego Lane

One of the most fun attractions at MontanaFair each year is Bricks & Minifigs presentation of Lego Lane inside First Interstate Arena Exhibit Hall near Youth Art. In past years, Lego Lane has featured some incredible designs including the Star Wars Death Star and First Interstate Arena. Wait till you see this years’ model of the full grounds of MetraPark. MontanaFair has its focus on building and growing. This year, Lego Lane is bringing back the Lego Derby and it’s all free. You are on the clock to build your derby car with Lego pieces. Then after building, it is time to race. The person with the fastest time wins a prize. All entrants get something for their efforts. Don’t miss the fun at Lego Lane.

Old Dominion’s “Make It Sweet Tour” continues with the Sunday night stop at MontanaFair as part of the Pepsi Entertainment Series. The song “Make It Sweet” recently became the band’s 7th number one song in the past three years. “One Man Band” has been released as Old Dominion’s next radio single due to popular demand of the song. With over 40 million streams, the track is proving to be a fan favorite, creating one of a kind moments during every tour stop. The band’s new studio album, Old Dominion is set for release October 25.

Yellowstone River Roundup PRCA Rodeo 2019 is the 10th anniversary of the PRCA rodeo coming to MontanaFair. The PRCA cowboys made their first appearance at MontanaFair following the Father’s Day tornado of 2010. Over the years, the best cowboys and cowgirls in the world have appeared at the fair. Tuf Cooper, Trevor Brazile, Clay Tryan, and Ty Erickson have all made multiple appearances at the Yellowstone River Roundup. The YRR is one of the last rodeos of the year

providing the opportunity for participants to earn those last dollars to qualify for the NFR in Las Vegas. There are three nights of competition at the Yellowstone River Roundup. 98° with Special Guest Judith Hill & FAM Saturday, Aug. 10 at MontanaFair • 7 p.m. The founding members of 98 Degrees met after Massillon, Ohio native Jeff Timmons decided to quit university and pursue a music career with best friend Jeremy Volk. In 1995, Timmons sang at a college party with three friends, and after receiving a positive reaction about his voice, he struck out for Los Angeles, California the following day. “It was a pretty hasty decision, looking back, but I was young and dumb. Sometimes ignorance is bliss," he said in 2004. His name was passed on to another graduate, Nick Lachey, who was attending Miami University to study sports medicine. Lachey flew to Los Angeles and after hitting it off, decided to form a band. Lachey invited one of his friends, Justin Jeffre, to join them. The final member to join the band was Lachey's younger brother, Drew, who was working in New York City as an emergency medical technician. The group decided on the name "98 Degrees" describing body temperature and their music. The hits started rolling quickly. The group scored a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit in the U.S. with the single "Thank God I Found You", a collaboration with Mariah Carey and Joe. The single went gold, selling 700,000 copies. It stayed at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for one week and the top 200 singles sales chart for 51 weeks. The single went to the top 10 in the UK charts and the group also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for the same song. In the summer of 2000, 98 Degrees released the first single of their new album "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)", the single went to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold. In September 2000, the band's album Revelation was released. Revelation peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went 2× Platinum. The band's next singles were "My Everything" and "The Way You Want Me To", both reaching the Top 40. The band took a hiatus after playing September 10, 2001 which lasted eleven years. They reformed in 2013 and have been playing shows at fairs and festivals across the country since.

Judith Hill

Judith Hill is an American singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California. She has provided backing vocals for such artists as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Josh Groban. In 2009, Hill was chosen as Jackson's duet partner for the song "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" during his This Is It concert tour. After Jackson's death in 2009, she, along with the rest of the This Is It cast members, performed at Jackson's memorial service and attracted global attention when she sang the lead on the song "Heal the World". Hill's rise to fame is briefly recounted in 20 Feet from Stardom, a documentary film that tells the untold story of the backup singers behind some of the "greatest musical legends of the 21st century". Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 1863-1866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo

The 101st Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 14-19, 2019 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, Crow Fair begins on the third Thursday in August and attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

The Crow Fair Rodeo is sponsored annually by the Crow Nation. The rodeo is a daily feature at the Crow Fair, offering a full day’s entertainment of youth events, professional Indian cowboys and cowgirls, and horse racing. Rodeos occur throughout the United States, through the various rodeo associations like the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The Northern Plains Indian Rodeo Association, organized under the Indian National Finals Rodeo, is the current association that sanctions the rodeo event. The Rodeo is held at the Edison Real Bird Memorial Complex, in Crow Agency, Montana. The rodeo arena, race track, stables, and campgrounds are all part of this complex. Parade at Crow Fair, Crow Agency by Montana Office of Tourism and Business Development

Besides the pow-wow, there are many other attractions. Each year the fair holds a parade, which winds its way through the campsites. A large number of women on horseback using oldstyle saddles (many family heirlooms) of bone and rawhide, ride in the parade. The parade begins each morning of the Fair at ten o’clock. The Color Guard leads the parade with retired veterans and active members of the armed services. Following the Color Guard are the President, Vice-President, and First Vice-President of the Crow Fair. The President carries the American Flag. In the past, the royalty of the Crow Nation would follow the Presidents; however, in modern parades the Crow Tribal Officials replace Crow royalty. The parade includes contests for best traditional dress in more than half a dozen categories. Riders on horseback were followed by elaborately decorated cars, trucks and trailers. Some of the vehicles are decorated in memorial to tribal elders who have passed during the prior year. Others carry multiple generations from elders to newborns. Princesses, ranging in age from preschool to 18, ride along the route, on horseback or by vehicle, wearing traditional, elaborate dress with perfect, modest poise.

Crow Fair Pow Wow

The Crow Fair Pow Wow is much like pow wows throughout the west, except for more emphasis on traditional dance styles. You can pick out [the Crow tribe’s style] from hundreds of dancers because the dress ways are the same as the turn of the last century. The only additions are material things to decorate their regalia. The pow wow grand entry begins at 1 p.m. sharp. It is led by the veteran honor guard, followed by all the dancers who will participate in the contests that have been held throughout the week. The announcer introduces competing drum groups that surround the arbor, each taking a turn keeping the beat. In addition to the Crow people, members of other tribes come to dance and sing and sell their goods on the midway that surrounds the arbor. Dance contests, with substantial prize money, are held throughout the week with participants ranging in age from preschool to elders.
