Stories in Stained Glass
Local examples of beautiful stained glass windows are featured throughout the Moss Mansion in Billings, Montana this summer. The exhibit includes stunning images by photographer Allison Kazmierski, owner of Font & Figure, from four local churches. Samples of stained glass, as well as a ‘work in progress’ display by Susan (Kennedy) Sommerfeld of locally owned Kennedy’s Stained Glass, are also found on temporary display throughout the historic house museum.

Big Horn County
Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 1863-1866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.
Little Bighorn Battlefield
On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.
Fort Custer
Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. The District earned a listing on the National Historic Register in 1984. Call 406-629-0134 to schedule a walking tour. The Historic Preservation Office is in the depot. Big Horn County and Hardin information are also on the National Register data base.

The Back Alley Arts Festival August 17th, 2019 from 10AM `– 5PM Located in the alley and parking lot behind Toucan, with entry at the east alleyway closest to the Pub Station. Free Entry: Suggested donation of $5 Toucan Presents it’s premiere Back Alley Arts Festival in partnership with the Pub Station, and sponsored by Iron Oil, Computers Unlimited, Dickey’s and Harry Koyama. The Back Alley Arts Festival or BAAF is an eclectic community-centered event inspired by Billings’ urban atmosphere, with an emphasis on art, food, and music. Refreshments will be available at booths with “street food,” from Lilac Restaurant, Dickey’s BBQ , or Don Luis and enjoy a coffee or tea from MoAv while you check out our artist and vendor booths. Billings-based Artist Curator Sherri Cornett will be completing one or more welded steel and copper wire sculptures. The alcove-shaped piece(s) will be similar in design to her public art piece Thicket currently installed under the Sky Point. Festivalgoers are invited to paint or draw on a cushion that will be placed within the sculpture(s) while the work(s) resides at Toucan through the month of September. From 3-5 p.m. any musicians are invited to a little friendly competition in a “Battle of the Buskers.” Musicians just need to show up and make music with a sign showing their name. Attendees can vote for their favorite buskers and the most popular will be awarded a $50 cash prize.
