Auction of Arias: Opera on the Avenue "Auction of Arias: Opera on the Avenue” takes place Sunday, November 3rd at McCormick Cafe, 2419 Montana Avenue. One of the most popular fundraisers of the year for NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, this event features national and regional opera performers singing a selection of favorite opera arias by Puccini, Mozart, and more, as well as Broadway showstoppers. Regional and local opera singers will offer up selections from “Marriage of Figaro,” being staged by NOVA November 8th through the 17th, at NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, 2317 Montana Avenue, Billings, Montana. Guests will meet and mingle with opera artists, while enjoying select wines and desserts in this intimate setting. During the evening, attendees are able to bid on their favorite opera singer to perform numbers from the program.
"Whether you are an opera lover or one with an appreciation for the arts and wish to meet talented performers and others that strive to support the arts in Billings, please plan to attend this delightful evening," said Dodie Rife, NOVA's managing producer. "You may find you have a favorite among the array of arias." Proceeds from Auction of Arias benefit NOVA’s mission to enhance the performing arts culture of the greater Billings region through education, development and performance. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Greycliff Prairie Dog Town Located just off interstate 90 in Southeast Montana at Old US Hwy 10 Greycliff, MT. Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park is the perfect stop on a family road trip! Greycliff is protected and preserved through the joint efforts of Montana State Parks, the Nature Conservancy and the Montana Department of Transportation. The black-tailed prairie dog, which calls this park home, is only one of five different species of prairie dogs. Within the Greycliff colony, the prairie dogs have a “coterie” which is like a prairie dog family. Each coterie consists of an adult male, three adult females and their offspring under two years old. If you’re planning to visit, you’re more likely to see these active creatures on a mild winter or cool summer day as they tend to hide when it’s too cold or hot.

Horror Theater and Haunted Maze You have nothing to lose but your mind The Moss Mansion is ready to deliver a host of frightful fun this Halloween starting Friday, October 18th. “We love Halloween at the Moss,” says Jenna Peete, Executive Director. “It brings a whole new energy to the grounds and we get a lot of satisfaction from all of the screams and laughter, none of which would be possible without a team of volunteers that adds a special blend of twisted creativity from planning to implementation.” Ready to find your way through the Labyrinth again? It’s back with a new floor plan but don’t worry, the maze’s terrifying inhabitants can’t follow you out through the panic exists…or can they? Horror Theater is back as well. The Moss Mansion Asylum for the Criminally Insane is prepared to welcome you for new employee orientation. During your visit you will meet and interact with many of our patients (played by very talented local actors) as well as have an opportunity to visit with fellow members of the staff. Downtown Day of the Dogs: Howl-O-Ween The first ever Downtown Day of the Dogs: Howl-O-Ween event will take place Saturday, October 26 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at various downtown locations. The event offers a designated time where local dog owners are invited to dress up their dogs and stop by downtown businesses for a dog friendly trick-or-treat-like event. This is the first ever Downtown Day of the Dogs, and treats and giveaways will be available at various locations while supplies last. This event is coordinated by the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) in collaboration with a number of local businesses including The Joy of Living, Black Dog Coffee, Century 21 Hometown Brokers, and Miranda Murdock Photography. The DBA is a local non-profit organization whose mission is to advocate for a vibrant and safe downtown. Dogs and their humans are encouraged to start their Howl-OWeen fun at the DBA Office, located at 116 N. 29th St suite A, to pick up a Howl-O-Ween goodie bag and a guide to all the stops. Miranda Murdock Photography will be set up at the DBA office to take $25 Howl-O-Ween photos for a cause. All photo proceeds will go to the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter and include a digital emailed print from Miranda Murdock Photography. The Joy of Living & Black Dog Coffee will have can’t-miss giveaways at the downtown Joy of Living location, 102 N. Broadway. All owners are encouraged to enter their dog into the Canine Costume Contest at the Century 21 Hometown Brokers downtown location, 2715 1st Ave. N. The contest is free to enter. Public voting will take place on Downtown Billings’ Facebook page Monday, October 28 through 5:00pm Wednesday, October 30. The first and second place winners of the Canine Costume Contest will be announced on Thursday, October 31. First place winner wins a 2020 Downtown Billings Ally card and $50 Downtown Gift Card. Pet owners are responsible for the behavior of their pets and are reminded to leave all dogs in heat or those who show dog-aggression safe at home. The rest of the rover rules include making sure dogs are leashed at all times (no exceptions) and to keep all pups on the sidewalk. Because most businesses do not allow dogs inside due to health codes and safety precautions, pet owners are asked to be courteous to participating businesses and verify they can enter with their pet before doing so. Additionally, all pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pet. Baggies are available at the two mini dog parks located on N. 29th and N, 2nd Ave.
This Day of the Dogs: Howl-O-Ween event is a continuation of the DBAs recent efforts to enhance the pet friendliness of downtown. The DBA began efforts in August of this year by first working with the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter to host the “Dog Days of Summer” promotion. That promotion brought adoptable pets from the shelter downtown one afternoon a week. Since, the Business Improvement District (BID), an arm of the DBA that focuses on cleanliness and safety of downtown, has installed two petfriendly fire hydrants and AstroTurf in empty tree wells and doggie bag dispensers. BID director, Joe Stout, lead on the installation of the new pet-friendly downtown amenities, worked closely ToadNWillow, who painted the decommissioned City of Billings fire hydrants, and J.W. Synthetic Grass who provided the realisticlooking astro turf.

Artist Talk: Ali Kaaf At The Yam
October 24, 5:30-8 p.m. In partnership with MSU-Billings, we are offering an artist talk with Ali Kaaf. Ali Kaaf graduated from the Institut des Beaux-Arts in Beirut, Lebanon, and continued his studies at Universität der Künste in Berlin under the supervision of Professors Marwan Kassab Bachi and Rebecca Horn. Kaaf has received numerous awards since then. In 2010, he received the Young Collectors for MAXXI prize by the Young Collectors Association in Rome, and in 2014, he was awarded the Honorary AIR Award by the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley. In his multifaceted work, Kaaf develops unique artistic forms exploring point and line, shallow space and depth, black and white, planes and shapes, rhythm, fire, light and shadow, and erosion – rendered into different variations in a range of different materials Free for YAM members, not-yet-members pay what you wish. Haunted history ghost tours at the Yam Every Thursday in October, 6-7 p.m. & 7-8 p.m. Did you know that the YAM is certified as a haunted building by Black Mountain Paranormal Research? The YAM will once again be hosting Haunted Museum Tours every Thursday evening in October. This is your only chance of the year to catch a glimpse of the original jail cells, solitary confinement, and the areas in which the original gallows were built. Come learn about the YAM’s history as Billings’ first jail. Tour intensity varies with group age. Availability is limited and must be paid for in advance. No children under five. Rocky Mountain College to hold fall concert October 13 The Rocky Mountain College Music Department will present a fall concert on Sunday, October 13 at 3:00 p.m. at Mayflower Congregational Church. The concert is free and open to the public. The concert will feature music from the United States and Canada. “Klee Wyck” pays homage to the great Canadian painter Emily Carr, evoking the wonder and mystery of the natural world. Patrick Quigley’s arrangement of “Steal Away” marries the traditional African-American spiritual melody with an improvisational ostinato pattern. Minneapolisbased composer Kyle Pederson’s selection “Hands Are Knockin’” uses the juxtaposition of English and Arabic texts to reinforce the universal importance of open hearts, open minds, and open hands. Concert Choir is led by Dr. Steven Hart, conductor and Dr. Lynell Kruckeberg, pianist and vocal coach
