An American Landscape: A Chorale Concert The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale presents their annual chorale concert An American Landscape Saturday, November 16 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, November 17 at 3:00 pm. Both performances are held at St. Patrick CoCathedral in downtown Billings. Under the direction of longtime chorale director Dr. Steven Hart, The Billings Symphony Chorale will perform traditional and shaker style melodies including: Humility arranged by Ron Jeffers, City Called Heaven arranged by Josephine Poelinitz, and Frostiana by Randal Thompson, based on the poems of Robert Frost. Randall Thompson’s Frostiana was commissioned by the Massachusetts town of Amherst to commemorate its bicentennial in 1959. The town of Amherst suggested Thompson use the poems of Robert Frost (1874-1963) due to his close association with the town, in which he lived in for several years. Thompson was given the opportunity to choose which of Frost’s poems he wanted to use. With the seven poems he choose, he created a seven-movement suite of choral songs he felt depicted what it was like to live in New England and Amherst at the time. Dr. Steven Hart says of Frostiana, “… Seven Country Songs
paints beautiful scenery. Each piece creates nostalgic, peaceful images in music and words. Composer Randall Thompson included “The Road Less Traveled” and "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening", two of Robert Frost’s most famous poems for this work.” St. Patrick Co-Cathedral is handicap accessible with ramps and elevators to use at your convenience. Emerald Hart to perform Nov. 19 Montana State University Billings voice major Emerald Eva Hart, soprano, will perform her Junior Voice Recital on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Cisel Recital Hall. Her recital is held in fulfillment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance. The daughter of Shan-Del Hart, Emerald Hart graduated from West High School in Billings, and studies voice with Professor Douglas Nagel. She has been an active participant in school choirs since she was in middle school, and has participated in numerous productions as an actress or director. Hart has performed with Billings Studio Theatre, Nova Center for Performing Arts, and West High School in “Rock of Ages”, “Bastien and Bastienne”, “Once Upon a Mattress”, as well as being a member of Venture Improv. She also teaches theatre at both Nova and the CDS Performing Arts Academy. Tim Schoessler accompanies Hart on piano, and guest artists include Grace Mock, Kieran Beebe, Margaret Schwarz, Rebecka Bolerjack, Seth Eldridge, and Jackets Only. Hart’s recital will consist of works by Beethoven, Marcello, Caldara, and Quilter.
Manos Inspiradas/ Inspired Hands
The Northcutt Steele Gallery, Montana State University Billings Honors Program, and Hispanic Outreach are pleased to present “Manos Inspiradas/Inspired Hands: Artworks from the Americas,” a student-curated exhibit open for viewing Nov. 12 through 26. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Student Gallery and lobby immediately adjacent to the Northcutt Steele Gallery. This catered reception is free and open to the public, and offers an opportunity to meet with the student organizers of the exhibit. This exhibition showcases art from Latin and Central America. It is the culmination of project-based research carried out by students in the honors course, "Art and Religion in Spain and the Americas," taught by Hispanic Outreach Coordinator Dr. Rebecca Berru Davis. Students exhibition organizers are Kaitlin Angel, Hissaki Flores, Rachel Hamilton, Claudia Jimenez, Keslie Oaks, and Angel Shandy. “Manos Inspiradas/Inspired Hands” is an exceptional exhibit featuring the work of anonymous artists whose work is inspired by their indigenous roots, their environment, and their religious and cultural traditions. Varied works in ceramic, wood, textile, and paint, as well as works on tin and amate bark paper are represented to demonstrate the range of creativity, ingenuity, and facility expressed by these artists. This exhibit is part of MSU Billings’ Hispanic Outreach Initiative, which seeks to spotlight and celebrate diversity on campus while strengthening our links with the local community.

Josh DeWeese presents ‘The Shape Inside’ The Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University Billings is excited to host Josh DeWeese’s “The Shape Inside,” an exhibition of ceramic artwork open from Nov. 14 through Dec. 12. A free, catered, public reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. A gallery conversation will begin at 5:30 p.m. Josh DeWeese’s ceramic work is what most would call unconventional. His forms are marked with traces of the hands that have shaped them. Impressions swirl energetically and handles often curl playfully and fold in upon themselves. The glazes, many of which are created from locally sourced materials, slide and ooze down the surfaces of his work creating flashes of blues, greens, yellows, and reds set against more earthy tones. “I want my pots to be well designed and comfortable to use,” DeWeese explains in his artist statement. “To be rich with ceramic wonder, and seductive to behold; and to have references to history and the field of ceramic art in order to spark the imagination.” DeWeese’s exhibition, “The Shape Inside,” which opens at the Northcutt Steele Gallery on the MSU Billings campus on Nov. 14 and remains on view through Dec. 12, is comprised of a group of richly varied ceramic vessels and wall pieces DeWeese has produced over the past several years at his studio near Bozeman. Together, these works explore ideas of scale, shape, color, and clay’s ability to capture the fluid moment. DeWeese grew up surrounded by art, nurtured by a strong community of well-known Montana artists. His parents, Robert (Bob)
and Gennie DeWeese, were influential artists who fostered a modernist painting movement in the state. Wishing to pursue a career in ceramics, DeWeese studied at Montana State University and the Kansas Art City Institute before receiving his MFA from Alfred University. Formerly the resident director of the internationally recognized Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Art in Helena, DeWeese is currently Associate Professor of Ceramics at Montana State University in Bozeman. He has exhibited and taught throughout the world including Jamaica, Italy, Japan, China, Chile, and Korea, and his work is included in several well-known national and international permanent collections. On Friday, Nov. 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ceramics Studio located in the Art Annex Building on the campus of MSU Billings, DeWeese will offer a free workshop to demonstrate techniques for throwing and constructing a variety of ceramic forms, including platters and lidded jars. The artist will discuss material choices and firing techniques, as well as a broad range of ideas about historical and contemporary ceramics. The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building on the Montana State University Billings campus. New Exhibit Encourages “You be the Judge”
At the Western Heritage Center, explore art through this entertaining show made entirely of thrift-store art pieces. Come discuss, smile, and reflect on what makes a particular painting good or bad, and then name and vote for your favorites. The exhibit contains an art studio where you can express yourself. The exhibit is open to the public through December 28, 2019.
Billings Suffragist Story Told Museum Opens New Exhibit
A new Western Heritage Center exhibit, Hazel Hunkins Hallinan: Billings Suffragist, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment.Hazel Hunkins Hallinan, a 1908 graduate of Billings High School, was a champion of women’s rights her entire life. She was a pivotal member of the National Woman’s Party (NWP) and active campaigner for woman’s suffrage in America. On the front lines of the NWP from 1916-1920, she protested alongside the prominent suffragist Alice Paul. After passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, granting U.S. women the right to vote, she moved to England, married journalist Charles Hallinan, and was a leader of the Six Point Group, an important British feminist organization. In 1977, she returned to the United States and marched in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Come learn about the local activist who passionately campaigned for women’s rights. This original Western Heritage Center traveling exhibit will be open in Billings at the Western Heritage Center through December 28, 2019. This new WHC traveling display is sponsored by First Interstate Bank, Billings Community Foundation, WMK Steel Fabrication, and Humanities Montana.

Portrait Members Exhibition

Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
