2 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide
Holiday Home & Art Tour Red Lodge, Montana – The Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery will be open Friday, December 6, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, December 7, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. This will be a great time for holiday shoppers to see what is new at the Guild. In addition, the Arts Guild is hosting the Holiday Home & Art Tour, from 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday, December 7, 2019. This open house-style event will connect artists and art enthusiasts. Ticket holders will be able to visit the homes of five Red Lodge residents to see their holiday décor and private art collections. An artist, whose work is in the collection, will be stationed at each residence to welcome visitors. Artists participating in this holiday event are Carol Hartman, Karen McBride, Michael Kosorok, John Potter, and Tom Wolfe. The experience of viewing art and meeting artists will occur on the afternoon of the annual Red Lodge Christmas Stroll, adding a new opportunity to a seasonal favorite. Refreshments will be served at each home. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased through the Arts Guild. Participants will be limited to 50. You must have a ticket to tour the home. Tickets are non-refundable. Paintings by Christine Vandersnick, opens at the
Roosevelt Center Satellite Gallery, November 15, 2019 through February 29, 2020. December 6, 2019 through January 27, 2020 two more shows will open. In the Main Gallery see the Small Works Show, featuring art in a variety of styles and mediums that can be bought and taken home that day making it a great way to shop for gifts. In the North Gallery view Photographs, an exhibition of work by Arts Guild photography members. Winter hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday and Tuesday. In December, the Guild will be open Sunday’s only from 12 to 4 p.m. Support the arts in Red Lodge by shopping at the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery. The mission of the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is to support, inspire, and encourage all artists. MSU Billings Small Ensembles host fall concert The Department of Music at Montana State University Billings will present a Small Ensemble Concert on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. in Cisel Recital Hall on the MSU Billings campus. The concert will feature several small groups from MSU Billings’ Department of Music, eager to showcase their talents for the audience. The Commercial Ensemble will be performing original songs in the styles of pop, soul, jazz, and indie rock. The Brass Quintet will provide sounds of the Baroque, Romantic, and post-Romantic eras. The Jazz Combo and Jackets Only will be performing vocal and instrumental jazz pieces.
Erosion limits access to Rosebud Isle fishing access site Rosebud Isle fishing access site at Fishtail is restricted to walk-in traffic only after the West Rosebud River left its bank and washed out the roadway. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks crews will haul in gravel to repair the access road at their first opportunity. Meanwhile, fishermen and site users will have to park in Fishtail and walk into the site. Signs will be posted at the site entrance. The closure will remain in effect until repairs are made and the signs are removed.

Huntley Project Museum The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture tells the unique story of the Huntley Irrigation Project. With 10.4 acres, 18 homestead buildings, hundreds of farm implements, and thousands of other artifacts on display, the Museum interprets, preserves restores and portrays life on the Project from the early 1900s to the late 20th century. The display at Osborn Park has one of the largest collections of horsedrawn machinery, early sugar beet equipment, corn, grain and hay mowers. Other displays include a tar paper shack, 2 school houses, an early day doctor’s office, bank, and a horse barn made from sawed cottonwood. The Huntley Irrigation Project was the fifth U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project in the United States and opened June 26th, 1907. Staff gives custom guided tours year-round! From Labor Day until Memorial Day the museum is open from Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Expanded hours after Memorial Day for the summer. Summer hours are 9 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week.
Tours Daily tours generally last 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. Staff can do an abbreviated tour for inclement weather or time constraints. Several times a year there are special tours. Visit in October for a haunted tour and in December for a candlelight tour. The museum also does group tours and school tours. Please call to schedule your tour today! The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, • Fish • Invertebrates • through what would become

the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. Billings Suffragist 35th Annual Story Told Downtown Billings Museum Opens New Exhibit Holiday Parade A new Western Heritage Center exhibit, Hazel Hunkins Hallinan: Billings Suffragist, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment.Hazel Hunkins Hallinan, a 1908 graduate of Billings High School, was a champion of women’s rights her entire life. She was a pivotal member of the National Woman’s Party (NWP) and active campaigner for woman’s suffrage in America. On the front lines of the NWP from 1916-1920, she protested alongside the prominent suffragist Alice Paul. After passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, granting U.S. women the right to vote, she moved to England, married journalist Charles Hallinan, and was a leader of the Six Point Group, an important British feminist organization. In 1977, she returned to the United States and marched in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Come learn about the local activist who passionately campaigned for women’s rights. This original Western Heritage Center traveling exhibit will be open in Billings at the Western Heritage Center through December 28, 2019. This new WHC traveling display is sponsored by First Interstate Bank, Billings Community Foundation, WMK Steel Fabrication, and Humanities Montana.
Friday, November 29, 2019 the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) presents the 35th Annual Holiday Parade themed “Let it Snow.” The DBA is a non-profit organization who advocates for a vibrant and thriving downtown through community events, clean and safe programs, and economic development projects. The parade consists of around ninety floats. Each float is provided by individual local businesses, organizations, and community groups who want to share their holiday spirit to our community. Float registration is open to the public through 4pm, November 15th. The online registration form can be found at downtownbillings. com/holiday-parade The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Fr Pauwelyn Assembly 587 will kick off the parade as honor guard. Santa will once again make an appearance in the parade finale on a float made by Billings resident, Darwin George, in memory of his father who loved Christmas. For those unable to attend the parade in person, Community Seven Television will air the parade live on air or watch it online at comm7tv.com. The parade route starts at 3rd Avenue North and North 27th Street, heading West down 3rd Avenue North. The parade turns left and heads South at North 32nd Street where it makes a left turn and heads East down 2nd Avenue North. The parade ends at 2nd Avenue North and North 27th Street. Local DBA members will judge the parade floats from the Moderator's stage located at Broadway and 3rd Avenue North. The judging categories include: Best Entry Overall, Best Float, Best Musical Entry, Best Costume, Best Interpretation of the Theme, Best Performers, and Most Original Entry. The 2018 Best Entry Overall award went to Darwin & Theresa George with Santa’s Sleigh. The DBA would like to remind the public that this is a free community event and public safety is their number one priority. Any and all candy handouts will take place from the sidewalks behind the crowded and not from the parade route itself. Parade floats will not be passing out candy from the parade route in compliance with the DBA’s parade safety policy put into place March 2018. ZooMontana is a 70-acre wildlife park located in Billings, Montana. Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
