2 – Welcome! Visitor’s Guide
Holiday Home & Art Tour Red Lodge, Montana – The Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery will be open Friday, December 6, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, December 7, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. This will be a great time for holiday shoppers to see what is new at the Guild. In addition, the Arts Guild is hosting the Holiday Home & Art Tour, from 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday, December 7, 2019. This open house-style event will connect artists and art enthusiasts. Ticket holders will be able to visit the homes of five Red Lodge residents to see their holiday décor and private art collections. An artist, whose work is in the collection, will be stationed at each residence to welcome visitors. Artists participating in this holiday event are Carol Hartman, Karen McBride, Michael Kosorok, John Potter, and Tom Wolfe. The experience of viewing art and meeting artists will occur on the afternoon of the annual Red Lodge Christmas Stroll, adding a new opportunity to a seasonal favorite. Refreshments will be served at each home. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased through the Arts Guild. Participants will be limited to 50. You must have a ticket to tour the home. Tickets are non-refundable. Paintings by Christine Vandersnick, opens at the
Roosevelt Center Satellite Gallery, November 15, 2019 through February 29, 2020. December 6, 2019 through January 27, 2020 two more shows will open. In the Main Gallery see the Small Works Show, featuring art in a variety of styles and mediums that can be bought and taken home that day making it a great way to shop for gifts. In the North Gallery view Photographs, an exhibition of work by Arts Guild photography members. Winter hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday and Tuesday. In December, the Guild will be open Sunday’s only from 12 to 4 p.m. Support the arts in Red Lodge by shopping at the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery. The mission of the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is to support, inspire, and encourage all artists. The Nutcracker at the Lincoln Center The Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale (BSO&C) presents The Nutcracker in three performances: Saturday, November 30 at 2 pm and 7 pm, and Sunday, December 1 at 2 pm at the Lincoln Center. Tickets range from $26-$52. The Nutcracker is performed by the San Diego Ballet under the artistic direction of Robin Morgan. More than 100 local child singers and dancers take the stage for this charming Thanksgiving weekend tradition. This year’s performances will be conducted by our own Maestra Anne Harrigan. “I’m very pleased to be conducting the Nutcracker this year. While it’s always good for orchestras and audiences to experience guest conductors, the Nutcracker is one of my personal favorites and I’m happy to be back. Over the past decade I’ve enjoyed watching young dancers grow from little mice to accomplished ballerinas.” Maestra Anne Harrigan. With its signature theatrics and beloved choreography, the San Diego Ballet delivers a light-hearted interpretation of this holiday classic that is expressive and dramatic. Principal dancers are seasoned professionals who bring strong brilliant technique, expressive artistry and high energy to this well-loved ballet. Audiences easily connect with their inspired performances to Peter Tchaikovsky’s beloved score performed live by the Billings Symphony Orchestra. Roles such as the Sugar Babes, Candy Canes, Gingersnaps, and the Boys & Girls Party Scene are performed by local dancers under the direction of Betty Loos and Julia Marble of the Montana Dance Center. Madelynn Hust will dance the role of Clara. Catherine
Hosfensperer will dance as Fritz.
In addition to local dancers cast in the ballet, vibrant young vocalists with the ROCK Children’s Choir under the direction of Janie Sutton will sing during the snow scene. Families will delight in the classic version of this Billings Thanksgiving weekend tradition of more than 30 years. “Must –see” simply doesn’t capture the live music, high energy of the talented cast, and special stage effects. This annual event would not be possible without the generous support of Stockman Bank. The Nutcracker is also supported with funds from the Montana Cultural Trust, the Montana Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Duke Ellington’s ‘Nutcracker Suite’ coming to MSU Billings The Montana State University Billings Music Department and The Rocky Mountain Jazz Collective are excited to present a performance of Duke Ellington’s “Nutcracker Suite” on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Petro Theater. The performance is directed by MSU Billings Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Scott Jeppesen, with many special guests including the Skyview High School Choir, Associate Professor of Music Doug Nagel, several local performers, and three musicians traveling from California. The first half of the show will feature the “Nutcracker Suite” with several well-known pieces including “Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy,” and “March.” Following intermission, the second half will showcase more traditional Christmas music featuring an approximate 90 person choir from Skyview High School joining the Rocky Mountain Jazz Collective Big Band. Hear holiday favorites including “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer.” Members of the Big Band include Scott Jeppesen on saxophone and
Billings Thrift Art Exhibit New Exhibit Encourages “You be the Judge”
At the Western Heritage Center, explore art through this entertaining show made entirely of thrift-store art pieces. Come discuss, smile, and reflect on what makes a particular painting good or bad, and then name and vote for your favorites. The exhibit contains an art studio where you can express yourself. The exhibit is open to the public through December 28, 2019.

Downtown Christmas Stroll The Christmas Stroll Activities include 29th Annual but are not limited to: Friday, December 6, 2019 is the December First Friday which consists of the Holiday ArtWalk and 29th annual Downtown Billings Christmas Stroll, with events beginning at 5pm and going through the night until 9pm. The Holiday ArtWalk features local and regional artist’s work at over 40 participating art galleries and businesses in the downtown footprint. The Christmas Stroll is coordinated by the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA), the nonprofit organization whose mission is to advocate for a vibrant downtown through event programming and business development tools. The event as a whole is free for the community to enjoy and includes various downtown businesses, retail shops, and other activated downtown spaces with extended hours, holiday-centric events, specials, holiday beverages and snacks, and loads of holiday cheer. The Christmas Stroll provides plenty to see, buy, or eat for kids and adults alike at various locations throughout all of downtown.

Billings Suffragist 35th Annual Story Told Downtown Billings Museum Opens New Exhibit Holiday Parade A new Western Heritage Center exhibit, Hazel Hunkins Hallinan: Billings Suffragist, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment.Hazel Hunkins Hallinan, a 1908 graduate of Billings High School, was a champion of women’s rights her entire life. She was a pivotal member of the National Woman’s Party (NWP) and active campaigner for woman’s suffrage in America. On the front lines of the NWP from 1916-1920, she protested alongside the prominent suffragist Alice Paul. After passage of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, granting U.S. women the right to vote, she moved to England, married journalist Charles Hallinan, and was a leader of the Six Point Group, an important British feminist organization. In 1977, she returned to the United States and marched in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Come learn about the local activist who passionately campaigned for women’s rights. This original Western Heritage Center traveling exhibit will be open in Billings at the Western Heritage Center through December 28, 2019. This new WHC traveling display is sponsored by First Interstate Bank, Billings Community Foundation, WMK Steel Fabrication, and Humanities Montana.
Friday, November 29, 2019 the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) presents the 35th Annual Holiday Parade themed “Let it Snow.” The DBA is a non-profit organization who advocates for a vibrant and thriving downtown through community events, clean and safe programs, and economic development projects. The parade consists of around ninety floats. Each float is provided by individual local businesses, organizations, and community groups who want to share their holiday spirit to our community. Float registration is open to the public through 4pm, November 15th. The online registration form can be found at downtownbillings. com/holiday-parade The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Fr Pauwelyn Assembly 587 will kick off the parade as honor guard. Santa will once again make an appearance in the parade finale on a float made by Billings resident, Darwin George, in memory of his father who loved Christmas. For those unable to attend the parade in person, Community Seven Television will air the parade live on air or watch it online at comm7tv.com. The parade route starts at 3rd Avenue North and North 27th Street, heading West down 3rd Avenue North. The parade turns left and heads South at North 32nd Street where it makes a left turn and heads East down 2nd Avenue North. The parade ends at 2nd Avenue North and North 27th Street. Local DBA members will judge the parade floats from the Moderator's stage located at Broadway and 3rd Avenue North. The judging categories include: Best Entry Overall, Best Float, Best Musical Entry, Best Costume, Best Interpretation of the Theme, Best Performers, and Most Original Entry. The 2018 Best Entry Overall award went to Darwin & Theresa George with Santa’s Sleigh. The DBA would like to remind the public that this is a free community event and public safety is their number one priority. Any and all candy handouts will take place from the sidewalks behind the crowded and not from the parade route itself. Parade floats will not be passing out candy from the parade route in compliance with the DBA’s parade safety policy put into place March 2018. Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
